inety-four employees of the City of Chilliwack were paid more than $75,000 last year and of those, 36 made more than $100,000. Chief administrative officer (CAO) Peter Monteith topped the list with his salary of $235,146 in 2013, an increase of just under one per cent over his 2012 pay. Monteith also logged $4,404 in expenses last year. This includes a vehicle allowance. Second on the list of highly paid staffers was deputy CAO Chris Crosman who earned $187,793 in 2013 and billed for $4,950 in expenses. That’s an 8.5 per cent increase over his 2012 pay. Third was director of corporate services Robert Carnegie who made $177,974 plus $827 in expenses in 2013. His salary increased by 4.8 per cent. The information comes from the annual remuneration report all municipalities are required to file by June 30 of each year. While other municipal govern-

former Chilliwack elementary school teacher has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail for possession and distribution of child pornography. The judge said the “great paradox” of the case, and something that defied comprehension, was how a man with a “stellar reputation” as a teacher and who had made considerable contributions to the community could simultaneously be downloading and trading images and videos of children as young as infants being sexually assaulted. “This ultimately self-ruinous conduct is perplexing to all of those concerned with this case including the defendant,” Cutler told the court.

he Airport Coffee Shop was bustling with more pie-lovers than usual Tuesday, as the fourth annual Terry Fox Pie Day approached its hectic lunch hour. As the restaurant filled nearly to capacity, customers bought slices or whole pies knowing 100 per cent of all earnings from their pastries would be going to the Terry Fox Foundation. “The community that we operate in is fantastic,” said Tracey Good, co-owner of the cafe. “As soon as they hear about it, they’re in here.” One of those community members on hand was Rolly Fox, Terry’s father. “I’m very pleased with what they do to raise money for cancer research,” he said. The coffee shop’s donations will add to the $650 million raised by the Foundation to date, which Fox said has greatly

When Betty passed away in June 2011, the Good sisters decided to dedicate one day every year to raising funds for the Terry Fox Foundation in her honour. “If the Fox family didn’t talk about and continue to promote Terry, we wouldn’t be talking about it today,” said Tracey. “They continued on his journey when he couldn’t, and so we continue on Betty’s journey.” In the past three years the charity event was held, over 1,000 slices of pie and almost 400 whole pies had been sold raising $12,452. “It’s a nice surprise that it continues to get bigger every year,” Tracey said. Another surprise for the cafe: strawberry-rhubarb dethroned apple as the most popular pie flavour. But the biggest surprise according to Good after the all of the pie she’s seen: “We still eat pie.”

Then there was when Alderman told Halladay about his history of hurting small animals. “He was strange,” she said. “The more I talked to him, the more bad vibes I got.” Then there was the incident with the dishes. Two days before the alleged assault, on a Saturday, Halladay had done a big cleaning job and Alderman had left his dirty dishes out. Milk pickup resumes, but dairy industry still reeling

pectra Energy started work on its pipeline maintenance project last week, as customers of the area’s grocery stores and restaurants have probably noticed. Fences were erected, equipment moved in, and workers have dug a trench across the south side of the Superstore parking lot. The company will replace 600 metres of 30-inch diameter pipe running under Vedder Road, meeting Luckakuck Way on both the planned section’s east and west ends. Standards of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the National Ener-

gy Board (NEB) dictate that changes in population and development of the area require a replacement and upgrade to a higher classification standard to the existing line. When the project moves west to the Cottonwood Mall parking lot, it will be accompanied by a Spectra information booth. A company representative says the timeline is fluid and depends on how quickly the project progresses, but estimates the construction and the booth will appear on the Cottonwood side within three weeks.

ilk pickup resumed late last week at Chilliwack Cattle Sales after what the BC Dairy Farmers called a “dark time” for the industry. Pickup of milk from the 3,500-cow herd at Canada’s largest dairy farm in Chilliwack was halted early last week after the largest processor in the country, Montreal-based Saputo, refused to accept milk from the Chilliwack Cattle Sales (CCS). The move was in response to a video released by the vegan-lifestyle organization Mercy For Animals (MFA) that showed punching, kicking and hanging of cows. Eight employees were fired from CCS, and Crown counsel are currently considering charges. Saputo wasn’t the only processor to refuse CCS milk, according to the BC Milk Marketing Board, which means nearly 100,000 litres of milk produced each day was destroyed at an organic food waste production facility in Lynden, Wash. CCS continued to be paid for the destroyed milk during the halted pickup. She went further and started an online petition also directed at Saputo asking them to resume milk pickup saying the company made a “big mistake” not to pick up milk from Chilliwack Cattle. “You’ve senselessly wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars, and for what? To appease supporters? I think it’s safe to say that a large portion of the petitioners don’t even consume dairy products,” Callaghan said.

Witness convention to fill July F

or much of next month, Chilliwack residents will bear witness—in a very literal way. The city is hosting four Jehovah’s Witnesses conventions at Prospera Centre this summer, the first of which took place last weekend (June 20 to 22). Over the course of the series approximately 14,000 attendees will pass through the venue, and the community. The four local Jehovah’s Witnesses congregations are heavily involved in the program, participating in interviews, presentations and dramas. It’s an important year for the program according to Barry Prokopetz, convention spokesman, who notes that 2014 is a centennial celebration for the religion.

“A core belief of Jehovah’s Witnesses . . . is that Jesus Christ began to rule as the King of God’s Kingdom in 1914,” said Prokopetz. On the 100th anniversary of that believed occurrence, local Chilliwack businesses stand waiting to accommodate and benefit from the large influx of convention-goers. And while the boost in regional commerce is a good thing for community pockets, some watchdog organizations see the cash injection as an obstacle, influencing stakeholders to ignore human rights violations by Witnesses. The Advocates for Awareness of Watchtower Abuses (AAWA) is one of those groups. “The Jehovah’s Witness leadership has never been totally truthful about what happens when a person becomes entangled with their group,” the AAWA said in a

statement preceding the string of conventions. The group said a strict doctrine of communication forbids Witnesses from contacting former members, even if they are family. In addition, AAWA said Jehovah’s Witnesses use methods to handle crimes within their congregations where human rights abusers can end up protected. The not-for-profit body encourages people in the community to rethink associating with the religious group or attending the conventions. Prokopetz compares their accusations to criticizing a family without ever meeting the people. “We all work; we’re your neighbours,” he said. “I’m the same guy cutting his lawn and paying his taxes. “Go to the convention and find out for yourself if what’s being said is the truth or not.”

ailed Chilliwack school-board candidate Corey Neyrinck faces yet another criminal charge for breaching conditions while in custody. Neyrinck, who also served as vice-president of the district parents’ advi-

sory council (DPAC), faces six sex-related charges, including sexual assault, sexual interference of a person under 16, making or publishing child pornography and possession of child pornography. A publication ban prevents the details of the charges from being reported.

Neyrinck is also charged with violating his bail conditions after he was arrested on the sex charges. He had his bail revoked earlier in the month, and appeared via video link in Chilliwack Court Tuesday morning yet again. The Crown has filed yet another breach charge against Neyrinck for con-

tacting someone related to the alleged victim from jail. Neyrinck already has two trial dates scheduled to deal with the first two breach charges, and was in court this week to schedule a date for the sex charges. That was put over to June 30 to allow him to speak to his new lawyer.

eading newspapers, at least some days and some pages, one might think the sky was perpetually falling. In today’s Chilliwack Times alone you will find stories of attempted murder, child pornography, animal abuse, high taxpayer-funded salaries as well as letters to the editor about the teachers’ strike. These things are newsworthy if a little depressing. But this Canada Day, as we reflect upon our nation and our culture, it’s important to note that even the bad news is, relatively speaking, good news. Sure there are bad people in the world who turn violent and view horrific images, but we have a justice system that is at least fair and tackles the problems head on. As for abuse of farm animals, at least we have regulatory agencies ready to crack down on such things. And at least the agricultural industry agrees that it’s wrong. As for taxpayer-funded salaries? We live in a country where the information is made public and actual corruption among public officials is rare. And the teachers’ situation? It’s not perfect, but at least we live in a country with a high level of education, not to mention the fact that girls are allowed to attend school. Canada: Imperfect, but we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world.

Municipal disclosures tell a tale

I

t’s that time of year again, when local governments across B.C. grit their teeth and post their annual statements of financial information for all and sundry. Depending upon your perspective, they’re either a veritable treasure trove of news stories or a minefield of PR disasters waiting to happen. While many news reports will focus on municipal salaries, as they say about most things in life: “it’s all in the fine print.” And in financial statements much of that fine print is found in the notes and schedules. It’s where ratepayers will learn that a funding deficit of $1.37 billion emerged in B.C.’s Municipal Pension Plan at the end of 2012. In a message to municipal employees, the chair of the trustees preferred to write that the plan was “96.5 per cent funded.” No need to cast a pall over summer with words like debt, underfunded, liability or deficit. So it was undoubtedly with the purest of actuarial intentions, that the copy provided to local governments for use in their 2013 financial reports referred to it as a “$1,370 million funding deficit.” However, even that

wording seems to have led to some confusion. Abbotsford, Fort St. John and other municipalities simply copied and pasted the boilerplate paragraph into their financial notes. No harm, no foul. Vancouver, on the other hand, chose to simplify the text and in doing so reduced the deficit to all of $1.37 million. But it’s definitely one thousand, three hundred and seventy million dollars or to be succinct $1.37 billion. It’s why contribution rates are going up next month with an increase that works out to an additional 1.4 per cent of salary, split between local governments and municipal employees. Another schedule to the financial statements provides ratepayers a chance to catch a glimpse of the state of labour relations at city hall. In Abbotsford, there were six severance agreements reached with non-unionized employees in 2013. Each received between two to 12 months of compensation. Vancouver had six settlements as well, with between two to 13 months provided in each. West Vancouver kept it at two, but they were pricey—19

months of compensation in one and 21 months in the other. And thanks to a freedom of information request filed by the Nanaimo Daily News, ratepayers in that city can put a dollar figure on severance agreements for three former city administrators. They walked away with $648,000. Then there’s the schedule of payments to suppliers for goods and services over $25,000. Proof positive that everything isn’t always what it seems: that $62,417 West Vancouver spent at Mercedes-Benz wasn’t to buy a new car for the mayor or a parting gift for the former chief administrative officer, but rather—as would befit the tony suburb—the municipality has some Mercedes-Benz trucks in its civic fleet. They did, however, spend $26,838 with House Wine. And that would not be a plonk, but a wine consulting firm. The bill hopefully included a few bottles. While overall expenditure comparisons between cities aren’t entirely fair, since no two are a carbon copy of the other, the financial statements do provide some interesting observations. On a per capita basis, local govern-

ment expenditures came in at $3,002 in West Vancouver, $2,497 in Fort St. John, $2,167 in Vancouver, $1,898 in Rossland and $1,561 in Abbotsford. Abbotsford shouldn’t gloat too much. Council there still has to deal with the fallout from that city’s ill-fated foray into the world of semi-professional hockey. The American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat didn’t generate much of it in the Fraser Valley and local ratepayers are now on the hook for losses of $12.7 million. As Mayor Bruce Banman stated. “We will not be subsidizing private industry again.” No kidding. To put these per capita numbers in some perspective, in the 2012 Kitchen/Slack: Report for BC Expert Panel on Business Tax Competitiveness, per capita expenditures in B.C. were pegged at $1,591. Now here’s an idea local councils could consider: create an open data system to consolidate all of the annual statements from across B.C. Address the root issues of violence Editor: I read your article (“Crying over spilt milk,” Times, June 19, 2014) with interest. Firstly, how could the owners not know what was happening in “their place of business”? They must consider the public rather ignorant indeed to actually believe this. It is their livelihood and they left the cheap labourer, whom is either a family member or maybe an escapee from prison, who knows, to do whatever they pleased at their business? Obviously these guys are druggies or they wouldn’t have such strange, sadistic tendencies. I am not a protester or a vegan, but to me, it was obvious that this was the acceptable behaviour at work. It was natural for these sick men. If the Kooymans truly believe and want the public to believe that they “love their animals” so much, then show it. Have farm tours weekly, and show other commercial farms how to do it properly. It seems you have hired very few employees to care for 3,500-plus cows, so instead of your employees brutalizing your stock, make big changes. Start with getting your cows out of the barn and grazing on your thousands of acres, that would be a good start to show you really are humane. Donna Fairweather Sardis

Way too many oil pipeline risks Editor: Even though the Enbridge Northern Gateway project was approved by the federal government, as an energy policy master’s student I see many problems still exist that should stop the project. One major issue is the risk of a spill of diluted bitumen—a risk far greater than Enbridge cares to admit. According to an independent analysis by SFU professor Tom Gunton, the risk of a tanker spill greater than 10,000 barrels rises to 89 to 99.9 per cent over the project life of 50 years. Enbridge appears to be applying a biased environmental assessment by using faulty biased models and not including possible expansions of pipeline infrastructure through merely adding more pumping stations, something which would require no public hearings or environmental assessment. So much for the responsible resource development promised by the Harper Government. Another problem is that Enbridge has had great difficulty cleaning up spills of a similar diluted bitumen in the United States. Even the supposedly technologically up-to-date Enbridge was unable to detect a major oil spill of 3.3 million litres in Kalamazoo, Michigan for 24 hours, even when local residents complained of an oil smell. To add insult to injury, 20 per cent of the heavy toxic oil sunk to the bottom of a nearby river, requiring dredging. Finally there is the issue of climate change. While solving climate change is challenging, the cost of doing nothing is far more in terms of economic damage and risk to national security due to climate-change destabilization (e.g. Syria). Solutions also exist today: The cost of electric vehicles is falling dramatically as battery technology improves. We should be phasing out fossil fuels over the next few decades, not building dangerous megaprojects that put our environment at risk. Thomas Cheney Chilliwack

Editor: I was married to a teacher for 20 long years. She taught calculus, trigonometry and all that fancy math stuff that 90 per cent of us don’t understand. The pressure that teachers are under is unbearable. The student are a problem but the parents are the worst. Because their child could stack up three blocks at age three they think that their child should be an architect, engineer or rocket scientist when the fact is the kid is dumb as a post. A child takes home a failing grade and it’s the teachers fault. I wouldn’t take their jobs for all the money in B.C. nor would anyone else who didn’t actually care about the kids. These positions take their toll on mental health, family life and all around enjoyment of life. As much as I dislike teachers they have my respect for the jobs they do. CUPE workers are sacrificing too Editor: We are the CUPE Local 411 (Chilliwack school district) executive. There has been much discussion lately regarding the impact of the BCTF strike on their members. There has been talk about food banks for the teachers as well as information that we received today that Telus will be giving the teachers a credit on their phone/ Internet bills. We are certainly in favour of helping out those that need help at this time. However, we feel that it is very important for the public to realize that CUPE school support staff across the province is being very severely impacted by this job action as well. Yes, we have a tentative agreement with BCPSEA, and part of that agreement is that the wages that we lose will be recouped but, what most people don’t seem to realize is that we are not receiving any pay at this time, either. If and when we recoup our wages it will be if and when our agreement is accepted by our respective Locals and BCPSEA. This will not be until some time in the fall. Editor: (Re: City fly the coop on backyard chickens, Times, June 19, 2014.) So here we go with our Mayor digging her feet in and deciding she gets to dictate to us where we can get our food supply. What next, no vegetable gardens either? Maybe we don’t want to be forced to buy eggs from our local farmers. Maybe for some of us, self sufficiency is important. Properly housed hens do not wander, do not stink, and are quiet as lambs. Anyone with actual backyard chicken experience knows that. , like many of you, have looked with concern at the events of the Middle East as religious fundamentalism under the new group ISIS has emerged as an even more threatening offshoot of the Taliban and Al Qaeda movements. Remember when the Taliban ran these regions? Under their “religious systems,” women were denied an education, forbidden to laugh out loud (trust me my wife would be in big trouble), music and television were banned, and above all, no kites were to be flown. Now I can understand a ban on elevator music but kites—I mean really—what can you possibly have against kites! I guess flying kites lead to laughing. Before I go too far down the finger pointing road, let me just say that I

Rule-making leads to division think that there are elements in every faith that pushes us toward religious extremes. We who claim to represent Christianity certainly don’t have a perfect record. Why is it that “religious” people can get so blown so off course? I think the first reason comes out of accepting the view that God is a joyless being who is deeply suspicious of His childrens’ desire for fun, celebration or pleasure. For example, one of the past teachings of the church was that sex was only for the procreation of children. Why? Because pleasure for the sake of pleasure couldn’t possibly be God’s idea could it? Recently I heard about some friends who forbid their children from celebrating birthdays. Why? Despite the “God reasons” they gave I couldn’t shake the thought that

at the core their God was deeply suspicious of the human desire to celebrate. Because this view affects us at so many levels, I take such hope and comfort in the scripture which declares that our heavenly Father is a God who “richly provides us everything for our enjoyment.” The second thing that blows the human heart toward extremes is our tendency to systematize his relationship with God by creating rules. While the Ten Commandments were given to order our lives, the story of “religion” is our desire to help God out with a few extra! As rules breed faster than laughing rabbits, relationship becomes secondary. Instead of developing a heart of love for God and others, our focus becomes trying to enforce our

rules on others or finding ways around them ourselves. When I grew up we were forbidden to play with cards. The results? We made different cards with different symbols and got around the ban. (I guess that shows you what kind of child I was.) Rules inevitably lead to dividing people. Those who feel they have a great track record tend toward smugness wondering why others don’t buck up. Those who can’t or don’t measure up walk around with either a sense of shame or defiance (or both). Unfortunately many in our community can tell vivid stories of the divisions within families and churches between the “rule keepers” and the “rule breakers” If you are one of those “black sheep” let me say this: “God is for you”. where you lost God in the “do’s and don’t’s” and turned your back on what you thought was Him. God is inviting you back but into a true heart relationship with him. If you are one of the “white sheep” let me say this: God is for you as well. Let him show you a side of Himself that is beyond your performance. He wants your heart, not just your behaviour. I guess this is so important to me because I come from a family of both white and black sheep. Furthermore, I have been both a white and a black sheep at times in my life. Wouldn’t it be great if Chilliwack experienced a reunion of the white sheep and the black sheep? Maybe we could fly kites together. hilliwack representatives will look to swim and powerlift their way to the podium this July when the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games return to Vancouver. Six local athletes will be competing as a part of the largest squad Team BC has put together in the history of the Games. Among them is Special Olympics World Games gold medalist swimmer, Ryan Kuester, and fellow aquatics teammates Justin Forseth and Melinda Franson. Also looking to power to the top of the medal race are national gold winning powerlifter Lisa Newell, and fellow lifter Joanne Bunnin. Jeramy Huskins-Markham will help represent the province as a member of the basketball team. The local competitors will join 1,700 participants vying for the opportunity to advance to the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 in Los Angeles, California. The last time the Games were in Vancouver was in 1990, and British Columbia’s team is gearing up to make a statement. “Our athletes are going to be ready to dominate on home soil,” said Shawn Fevens, Team BC chef de mission. “Team BC has a dedicated and talented group of athletes and

Junior golfing with optimism

O

ne of the largest junior golf tournaments in the Valley is winding up for a week of competition next month, with action stretching across Chilliwack and Abbotsford. This year marks two decades for the Optimist Fred Wellsby Junior Divot Golf Tournament, which co-ordinator Glenda Standeven says is surreal—and exciting. “I had a kid who went through my program put his kids in my program,” she says with a laugh. “That’s when you realize, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m getting old.’” The tournament, which stretches across six Chilliwack golf courses, is open to any kid under the age of 15. Those who sign up will be further split into age groups, although Standeven says age doesn’t always affect the chances of taking a run at the trophy. “If you’re good, you’re good, and we don’t differentiate between that. If you’re the best golfer, you get the trophy for the whole day no matter what age category you’re in,” she says. “We had an eight-yearold win the whole tournament one year.” The Optimist Fred Wellsby Junior Divot Golf Tournament begins on July 2 and runs until July 10, hosting five courses and a championship invitational over those nine days. Each course is $15, and is open to any kid under 15—although participants should be able to play 100 or better on a par 3 course. The under-nine category is allowed double-par pick-up, which allows them a little more wiggle room. The tournament began under the hand of Fred Wellsby, a member of the Optimist Club of Chilliwack, who believed that golfing was a “gentleman’s sport”—one that all kids could benefit from.

“He was a firm believer that you ignite the passion in kids early and they will become golfers,” Standeven says. “He encouraged that passion—for kids to love the sport.” “And I really liked the way he was doing this—the philosophy of introducing golf to kids, where it had been an elitist sport, and only for the rich,” she continues. “Fred said, “No, let’s get kids hooked on it.’” When Wellsby died a few years after bringing Standeven on board, she decided to keep the tournament going in his name. ccording to club co-coordinator Lorne Kay, the Chilliwack Chess Club’s (3C) inaugural Stan Rogers memorial chess tournament was a rousing success, hosting 14 players in the Little Beetle Bistro on Yale for a total of five games each. Matt Ehrenreich, a non-member and unknown quantity entering the tournament, finished all five of his games victoriously to claim the grand trophy. “The number one and number two weren’t members of the club,” Kay says. “Well, they are now.” The tournament succeeded in bringing a few new members to the chess club, as well as honouring

Stan Rogers—a noted member of the club and community volunteer and entrepreneur who died suddenly earlier in the year. “We had a big picture of Stan set up,” Kay says. “Stan was watching and enthusing with a few of us guys.” The tournament drew players of all ages and skill levels, including a talented 13-year-old who earned more than a few victories and gave Kay a run for his money. “I squirmed out from under one of his traps, and he frowned and said, ‘I almost had you, you know!’” Kay laughs. “I said, ‘I know!’” “It was really good. He’s a good player. One of these days he’s going to be doing tap-dances over my

I’m a monster.’” Throughout Halladay’s testimony in court last week, Alderman, a pale, stout, doughy man with thick, shaggy brown hair, stared emotionless straight ahead in the prisoner’s box. Alderman had originally pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the case, but when in court last August for sentencing, the judge struck his plea from the record after he suggested his actions might have been involuntary. Judge Russell McKay then ordered the current trial on aggravated assault and attempted murder charges. His lawyer at that time, David Silverman who was already his second, withdrew as council. His current lawyer, Andrew Bonfield, focused his cross-examination last week of Halladay on her statement and its similarity to her statement to police. The Crown’s case is based mostly on the testimony of Halladay, her daughter Denica, and three police officers. Bonfield also took issue with how Alderman was charged with aggravated assault, a charge that was later lifted to attempted murder. He pushed the RCMP officer who took Alderman’s statement, suggesting that he should have been “rechartered” given the possible change in jeopardy when the charge was raised. Based on his questioning of police, Bonfield will likely ask to have Alderman’s statement excluded from testimony. The trial was scheduled to continue June 26.

S

haron Fast is the type of person who tells you something so full of common sense that once she says it you feel as if you already knew it. But while some of what the registered dietitian says seems obvious, her words are worth heeding as her advice isn’t just helpful and healthful, if followed it could save your life, not to mention saving the healthcare system billions. “Reading labels is important,” she tells me during a recent grocery store tour. Well, yeah. “Focus on local foods. Fruits and vegetables from far away have less nutrients.” Makes sense. “Sugar is a really big problem.” Don’t we all know that? Well, the answer is yes and no. It’s hardly a secret that we shouldn’t be adding too much sugar to coffee and cereal, and we should avoid too many cookies and doughnuts and pies. But take a closer look at the labels of your favourite foods and you might be surprised.

There is added sugar in just about everything. According to University of California pediatrics professor Dr. Robert Lustig, there are 600,000 food items in the U.S. and 80 per cent of them have added sugar. Lustig is one of the sources in the new anti-sugar industry documentay Fed Up. Pasta sauce, salad dressing, supposedly healthy cereals, all have added sugar and lots of it. And while Canadian food products are required to have nutritional information labels, consumers will note there is no percentage recommended daily value next to sugars. Those prone to sugar industry conspiracies will suggest the powerful lobby is to blame. There is also the practical fact that other than energy, sugar has zero nutritional value. So how could there be any acceptable daily value? The prevalence of added sugar over the last 30 years is certainly the main culprit when it comes to the epidemic of obesity facing the current generation. The problem is so bad and so understated, according to Fast and others, that Alzheimer’s disease is increasingly being called Type 3 diabetes.

OK , sugar consumption needs to be decreased, and since some of us are at least sometimes buying food from the middle aisles of the grocery story—where all the added sugar is—we need to read labels. As an example, Fast looks in the cereal aisle (an aisle, incidentally she says is best avoided) at a common product: Cheerios. So what is better, regular Cheerios or Multigrain Cheerios with its less showy packaging and with five whole grains?! Whole grains are always good, more fibre is always better. But take a look at the per serving level of sugar in regular Cheerios: one gram. In Multigrain? Six grams. Fast offers her grocery store tours through Chilliwack’s Ascend Fitness Coaching. They run approximately one hour and are complimentary for Ascend clients and $20 for guests. To start with, Fast brings tour attendees to the produce section. “This is where I want people to spend most of their time,” she says. wrote, “We are fortunate in our province to have many great teachers in our province, but unfortunately too often they find themselves caught in the middle of labour disputes—feeling like they have to choose sides between their students and their union.” I am writing you today to clear up this misunderstanding and misrepresentation of our situation as teachers. The choice we are being forced to make is, do we want to make sacrifices today for a better tomorrow? The overwhelming answer is YES! Teachers are willing to lose pay and sacrifice the extra-curricular activities of their own children to fight for public education. As difficult as it is, we have walked off the job, disappointed students, and inconvenienced parents for the future of public of education. This battle, as much as the media would

like to say, is not about wages. This battle is about our students’ learning conditions and the health and well-being of our teachers. The stress levels in our public schools are palatable. Administrators, teachers, educational assistance, and other support staff are at the breaking point. The request of 10s of thousands from across the province—be it parents, students, teachers, administrators, school trustees or other members of the public, is simple: respect and invest in public education. Please be truthful and honest with the public about the intentions of your government. Please listen to the stories, the firsthand accounts, of what is happening in our public schools. Please take all this into consideration and give students, teachers and public education adequate funding and a fair deal for all. he sun is shining, the birds are singing, and summer is showing its face in gardens and mountains across the valley. And last but not least, the season of sunshine is making an appearance at Vedder’s new Art Room, where summer programming abounds for people of all ages. With three program co-ordinators on tap, the Community Arts Council sees the Art Room ready to rumble for its first full summer following its grand opening last month. The three coordinators have a wide range of expertise and passion between them: Hailey Shand is studying food and nutrition at UBC, and will be taking point with food programs for kids. Chelsea Lewicki, studying up on visual arts in a B.A. program, is set to tackle general arts and crafts programs for middle-grade kids between the ages of 7 and 12. Hannah Clark, entering her last year of high school, rounds out the Art Room musketeers; she’ll be working and playing with the Crayon Crew, an intensively fun arts and crafts course for those between the ages of 3 and 6. The programs happen on a weekly basis throughout the summer, with some open to drop-in registration for

Variety is the spice of the stage: UFV’s upcoming season

he University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) theatre department has a full docket lined up for the coming year, including a few fresh twists on old classics. The department welcomes Raïna van Waldenburg at the helm of her first UFV production as she directs Birdsong, set in the years leading up to and during the First World War. The show promises a tale of passion, bravery, and “the power of memory and longing.” The show

is the first to the stage running Oct. 15 to 26. The final main stage production of 2014 will be just in time for Christmas with a little classic didacticism in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. UFV players will tackle a version adapted for the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed by fencing master and theatre instructor Paul Gélineau. Opens Dec. 10 and runs until Dec. 21. T

he Fraser Valley music scene might lack recording studios and show venues, but according to music blogger Adam Roper it has no shortage of community— something he hopes to show in his compilation album, Old Clayburn. Roper’s blog, Birds of Canada, focuses on Canadian content (CanCon) and highlights music coming out of the Fraser Valley, a local scene both varied and vibrant. But, Roper says, it’s also poorly supported and underrepresented. There are few venues for live shows in and around the valley, and while modern technology enables artists to record an album or EP just about anywhere, it’s difficult for that music to spread and be heard outside of the Valley. “It’s a great community, despite the fact that there’s no central venue space for the music scene,” Roper says. “It’s very surprising; there are all these great artists producing music without the support of basic resources—venue spaces or labels or recording studios.” As long-time host of CanCon-focused radio show Birds of Canada on CIVL 101.7 fm, Roper had the chance to host open-mic nights, indie shows, and meet musicians trying to make a go of it in the valley. And with this compilation, named

Album cover for Fraser Valley compilation album Old Clayburn. for the historical brick factory in Abbotsford’s historic downtown, Roper wanted to bring a taste of that community to the wider public. “If you catch it on the radio it’s enjoyable, but then the next week it disappears,” he says. “I’ve found that compilations have more of a permanence, where they can be there basically forever. What I was trying to do was to be representative of that music scene, to hopefully give it a larger audience—just recognition of the fact that there are so many great bands and so many great things happening here.” The resulting compilation is home to artists and bands from across the Valley, stretching from Chilliwack to Aldergrove, even featuring a few Valley ex-pats—bands who got their

start in the Valley and have since moved to greener pastures. Roper pursued a few bands he knew he wanted represented on the album, but also made a general call for submissions—which led to a few surprises. The Magician & The Gates of Love contributed an unreleased track, making Old Clayburn the first and only place the song appears. Roper was also pleasantly surprised by a band entirely new to him: Chilliwack’s Catfence, which has been in hibernation for the better part of two decades. “I’d never heard of this band, so I did a bit of research,” Roper explains. “They’re this band that played in Chilliwack from 1982 to 1984; they released a cassette tape and basically disappeared from history. But now they’ve resurfaced, just by chance. “There are lots of surprises in the scene. There are a few bands missing from the compilation, but I think it’s a fairly good representation of the Fraser Valley scene.” And while not much ties these bands together besides proximity, they’re also bonded by a sense of community—which, as Roper proves, is enough to keep a local music scene thriving. It is with a broken heart I announce the passing of my husband and best friend at the young age of 61 yrs, after losing his battle with cancer. Ed was born in Rossland, BC on Sept 14, 1952. He was predeceased by daughter Katrina and mother Irene. He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie of Chilliwack, son Darren (Michelle), grandsons Michael and Austin, step granddaughters Alyssa and Kaitlyn of Edmonton, sister Kay (Gordon) of Langley, father Jim, two aunts, several nephews and nieces, several cousins and several great nieces and nephew. Ed has been a Paramedic for 28 years, starting in Rossland and continuing as full time Paramedic in Vancouver Post in 1999 ending in Chilliwack. He was a volunteer fireman for 13 yrs in Rossland. He was a diligent and proud blood donor. There will be a celebration of his life on July 5, 2014 at 45530 Spadina Ave in Chilliwack at the Landing Sports Centre Loft Room from 1-3pm In lieu of flowers, a special account has been set up at TD Bank by Bonnie Dunlop in memory of Ed Dunlop. Ronald (Ron) Gordon McComb of Chilliwack, BC passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the age of 78. With his wife at his side, he died peacefully at Cascade Lodge. Ron was born in New Westminster on Feb 19, 1936. Ron was a member of the New Westminster City Police Dept for 31 years; retiring in 1992 at the age of 57. During his retirement he enjoyed golfing, curling and gardening. He leaves behind his wife Rose of 15 years and his 2 children, Mark [Mary] and Krista. He is also survived by his brother, Bob and sister, Marilyn [Dave]. Ron was predeceased by his daughter, Alison and his parents Harold and Mary McComb. A special Thank You to the staff at Cascade Lodge for treating him with such dignity and kindness and to Dr. Gordon Enns and his staff.
