ew people run for political office for the money, but the gigs get more and more lucrative all the time. Pay for the top job at city hall increased 18 per cent since 2010 when the mayor made $78,097.
Councillors’ pay bump equal to 7.3%, mayor gets 2.5%
This year Mayor Sharon Gaetz will earn a tidy $92,361 and the six city councillors take home $34,448 for the part-time job. (By “top job” we mean top elected official. The city’s chief administrative officer Peter Monteith made
$235,146 in 2013 and 53 staffers earned more than Gaetz.) That’s because, once again, a formula used every three years means a 2014 raise for Chilliwack municipal elected officials. This is something that does not come before city coun-
cil and is not reported by city hall in any way unless requested. In January 2011, the mayor’s salary quietly went from $78,097 to $87,022 and city council salaries went from $26,648 to $31,025. Those raises were based on a
council remuneration bylaw that sees pay rates reviewed and adjusted every three years through an averaging of the five B.C. local governments immediately larger than Chilliwack, in terms of population, the five immediately smaller, and Abbotsford.

hilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz is making the connection between a recent air quality advisory in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver’s proposed waste-to-energy incinerator. “It’s not too hard to connect the dots,” Gaetz said in a Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) press release issued Tuesday. “More pollution equals more ground-level ozone. Metro wants to build another garbage
incinerator. Why would they want to add more pollution and lower the air quality even further?” Gaetz and the FVRD have strongly opposed Metro’s proposed incinerator, arguing that any increase in emissions to the fragile Fraser Valley airshed is too much. The air quality advisory comes along with a heat wave in the region. The high temperature of 34.5 C in Chilliwack on Sunday was an all-time record for the day, beating the 33.9 C on July 13, 1961, according to Roger Pannett, Environment Canada volunteer

Homicide victim was involved in court case

ew details have emerged about the killing last week of a Chilliwack man, but the Times has learned the victim was to be a witness in an unlawful confinement and robbery case currently before the courts. Chilliwack RCMP were called to the residence of Stefan Kondolay just after 4 a.m. on July 10 where he was found dead. The death was immediately
deemed suspicious and the file was passed to the RCMP Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Kondolay did not have a criminal record. The 31-year-old and his father are well-known in the B.C. drag-racing community, and numerous comments and tributes have been posted on racing websites about the death. “You will not be forgotten Stefan as many local racers strive to accomplish even half of what you did on the
track,” said Speedzone Magazine editor Dean Murdoch in an online posting. Kondolay was also mourned in the local football community, as he was a community football player in Chilliwack and his parents were active volunteers with the Chilliwack Huskers. The family run a specialty car-parts business in Abbotsford called Diesel Transmission Technology. The IHIT team had a section of First Avenue in front of Kondolay’s home
blocked off for more than a day. A team of officers was also seen Friday on Ashwell Drive. wo cartoons on a cellphone were enough to send a Chilliwack man to jail for seven months. Arthur John Wills pleaded guilty back in June to one count of possession of child pornography, and was sentenced in court Monday by Judge Gary Cohen. The 58-year-old also received three months probation, and a 15-year ban on attending parks, pools, playgrounds and accessing the Internet. Wills’ conviction was based on the discovery of two images of what is known as “lolicon”—a genre of Japanese anime where underage girls are drawn in sexualized positions. Also found on his phone was a digital poster with a message critical of “real” child porn, and in support of lolicon as a supposedly victimless way for pedophiles to enjoy their addiction. The message came courtesy of Responsible Pedophiles for Victimless Porn (RPVP), according to Crown counsel Anna Tosso. While the two animated images were the only ones that fit the legal definition of child pornography, police also found photographs of young girls in sexualized positions wearing bikinis and underwear. W
h en a stretch of trail through the woods near the Vedder River is completed in a couple weeks, it will be the most scenic detour in Chilliwack. Frequent Rotary Trail users—and there are thousands of them—will have already noticed work in the forest near the river on a stretch east
of Peach Road. The work underway is being done by Canada Lands Company who are developing River’s Edge, a 50-acre mixed housing development on a piece of untouched federal land along the Vedder River. Between 350 and 500 units are planned for the project, along with “green streets” running through the area right to the river. As part of the development, Canada Lands has been ordered to
rebuild the riverbank next to the trail to withstand the rapid fall/winter flows of the Vedder. Approximately 600 metres of riverbank will be rebuilt, most of which is adjacent to the Rotary Trail. Canada Lands is well aware of how important the Rotary Trail is to the community, so a public information booth has been set up right on the trail at Peach Road.

Letter prompts strong emotions

A
letter we ran in our last edition of the Times has ignited a firestorm of vitriol against not only the author of the letter, but also us as the medium through which it was disseminated. We knew our front-page story of same-sex couple Justin Mallard and Brett Rancourt and their decision to have a child through a surrogate mother would be controversial here in a community with strong religious values. And while we’re honoured to share the happy couple’s story, we knew there would be a backlash from some of our readers. And it always starts with a letter. We have a liberal letters policy here at the Times. We encourage our readers to express their opinions. It is a sacred right and one we’ve fought wars to protect. By running a diversity of letters we hope to better reflect our community. Sometimes that means publishing letters that prompt strong emotions from our readers. To be sure, the letter expressed an extreme view, and one nobody here at the Times shares. To ask readers “not to shoot the messenger” in this incident seems trite. We have a responsibility to our readers and we don’t take that lightly. You’ve responded and we are grateful for the feedback.

Tolerance needed on many fronts tol·er·ance /’täl(e)r(e)ns/ noun: tolerance 1. the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behaviour that one does not necessarily agree with.
I
learned a thing or two about tolerance last week, namely that many people in this fine city don’t have any of it for anti-same-sex couple sentiments delivered through their newspaper. And they shouldn’t. One of the letters we printed, in particular, incensed readers, touched the rawest of nerves and the outrage it produced flowed endlessly on social media channels. It was a marvellous example of the power and the immediacy of the Internet. I’ve always been a vocal proponent of running letters that push the envelope. A strong opinion, whether it runs contrary to our own beliefs or not, is always welcome on the letters page. But there are limits to free speech (the
KEN GOUDSWAARD Postscript classic line of yelling “fire” in a crowded theatre comes to mind). Almost to a person, commentators found the letter disgusting and not representative of the community. And bottom line, representing and reflecting our community is a major part of the mission statement here at the Times. To be sure, there are many in Chilliwack who don’t agree with same-sex couples raising a family. For many, if not most, this stems from their religious beliefs. As a close friend of mind said: “My religion doesn’t allow me the luxury to agree with what they (Justin and Brett) are doing.” But in the same breath, he mentioned how he knew both men and how he believed they would make wonderful parents.
I’ll take that kind of tolerance. You don’t have to agree with people’s lifestyle choices, but at least allow them the freedom to make those choices without your condemnation. I was heartened, really heartened, by the overwhelming support for this couple. If there is a positive outcome to this whole firestorm, it’s that I’ve learned just how open and accepting Chilliwack can be. I’ve lived here a long time and that hasn’t always been my perception of the community. What sometimes is lost in the mob mentality of the social media world is tolerance for those with opposing views . . . such as our letter writer. Many would say he doesn’t deserve it, but I would disagree. One commentator mentioned the possibility of “getting a posse together for a lynching.” Make no mistake, that’s a death threat, and has no place in the discussion. I will defend to the end the offending letter writer’s right to his opinion. But you’ve told me, in no uncertain words, you don’t want to see it in your community newspaper. And you
won’t ever again. Years of newspapering have given me a thick hide when it comes to public backlash against something I or the newspaper have done that is upsetting, but I have to admit this one stings a bit more than others. From all accounts Justin and Brett are incredible people. They are, as I have told them, to be commended for their bravery in sharing their story. Their supporters, and they are legion, are nothing if not passionate in their belief that they will make amazing parents. For me to have taken the shine off their heartwarming story is something I deeply regret. There was no malice intended, no underlying agenda—just a lapse in judgement. None of us is perfect . . . except maybe those beautiful twins and the home and family they find themselves in now. To those who have vowed to never read us again, I hope you can find a little tolerance for the imperfect nature of this business and the decisions we sometimes make. Let us earn your respect again.

Not once have I felt that not having a father in my life has hurt me developmentally or emotionally. At the end of the day a child needs love, stability and support. This can come from a Mom and a Dad, two Dads, two Moms, a single Dad or a single Mom. It appears you lacked that as a child and I am deeply saddened that you were raised with such hatred in your heart. Does your message affect me and my family? Yes it does, but not in the way you were hoping. You have further helped us see that our support by far exceeds what we ever thought. Your message of hate will be used as a tool for parents to see the importance of raising our children with an open mind and an open heart full of love and acceptance. Ignorant of the facts Editor: Free speech, free press and education are vital parts of the foundation to a free and democratic society, and I applaud the authors of the letters responding to the article about Justin and Brett for exercising their right of free speech by voicing
their opinions by writing to this paper. However, these letters also show that much education still needs to be done. First off, let me say that I do not consider the authors to be homophobic or hateful. I do however, consider them ignorant of the subject at hand because the points and arguments made in those letters are as usual one-sided and illogical. The authors allude to the concept that being gay is a choice. Logic dictates that if I choose to be gay, then you at one point, chose to be straight. Tell me the day you chose to be straight? Or better yet, choose for one day to be gay. You speak of children that should be raised by a loving mom and dad and I applaud you for your dreams. But here are some facts and statistics for you. The divorce rate in Canada is well over 40 per cent. Twenty-six per cent of families with children are headed by a single parent. Deadbeat parents owe more than $2 billion in unpaid child support. Nearly 55,000 children and youth were the victims of a sexual offence or physical assault in 2009, about three in 10 of which were perpetrated by a family member. In Canada alone, there are 30,000 unwanted children waiting for adoption. “There is no published scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of ‘reparative therapy’ as a treatment to change ones sexual orientation.” (American Psychiatric Association) In his statement on June 19, 2013, Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, publicly apologized to the LGBT community and admitted that after 37 years of trying to “change” gay people all he could show for was a lot of hurt and suffering and countless suicides. Studies have shown that children of same-sex couples experience higher levels of general health and family cohesion than those from traditional families. With all the hurdles and obstacles we face to
become parents, I dare you to provide evidence or proof of any child raised in a same sex family suffering abuse or neglect. Same sex marriage has been legal in Canada for almost 10 years now and despite prophesies of doom, about the breakdown of society, I dare you to provide proof that this country is falling apart. While I don’t know Justin and Brett personally, they are part of our family and if they were to ever reach out for help, I have no doubt that we would step up to the challenge and support them in any and all ways possible. Can you say the same? In closing, if you really wish to make a difference, clean your own house first before you try to tell us how to build our homes. Stop the sexual and physical abuse of children. Encourage your fellow Christians to get involved in adopting 30,000 unwanted children. Support single parents so they don’t have to depend on the deadbeat parents of their children. Finally, let me assure you that we will not justify our existence to you or anyone else. This god you worship has been used to justify every evil done by man. I think it’s high time we learn from history and not just from one book. Matthew 7:3-5: Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4. How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5. one comment was made about the surrogate mothers. They both made a purely heartfelt gesture. You speak from a purely “Christian” point of view. Are you not aware of the many other religions? Not everyone embraces Christianity or Christians. You may not understand why a person is gay or lesbian but doesn’t it say in the Bible—“Love the Sinner but not the Sin.” And who are you to cast the first stone and pronounce judgement? Shame on you!
Their way of life might not be your choice but aren’t we supposed to “Love our Neighbour as ourselves?” Furthermore, how Brett and Justin will raise their children is none of your business. Instead, why don’t you learn and listen with an open heart and open mind and accept them for who they are and not try and change them. I have many gay and lesbian friends whom I love dearly and value their friendship greatly.
And by the way, my own mother passed away when I was three weeks old and I think I turned out just fine, thank you very much. I attended a Christian church for a long, long time but I left the church. Why? Well let’s just say I felt there was a lot of hypocrites who judged people when they themselves were far from perfect. Editor: Mr. Masses, Initially, I found your words hurtful and offensive but quickly remembered that people like you are few and far between. While you are entitled to your opinion, it is so distasteful to speak with such hatred and aggression towards any human being no matter who they are. I believe and support the right of freedom of speech as this is the platform for so many vital historic causes, however I do not support bigotry, hate and discrimination. We will fill their lives with opportunity and they will always know that they have unconditional love and support from us and the incredible community of family and friends around us. Thankfully for us and our children, the world is becoming a better place by the day. People are opening their minds and their hearts to all different types of families as the dynamics of families are changing and evolving. Will some take issue on this? Absolutely, but the ones that will are the vast minority and we as one of those evolving families are relieved to know that society is on our side. Alcohol believed to be a factor in drowning
C
hilliwack RCMP are reminding people about the dangers of mixing alcohol and swimming after a man drowned in Cultus Lake Monday evening. Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, Mounties arrived at Entrance Bay where several individuals reported a friend was last seen close to the waterline. Chilliwack General Duty members and the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS) arrived at the scene and began to search for the male. A dog handler entered the water and found the male a short time later.
“This is a very tragic incident,” RCMP spokesperson Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. “Although there will be no criminal investigation regarding this incident, police believe alcohol to be a strong contributing factor in this drowning.” The man’s name was not released, and the file is in the hands of the BC Coroner Service. National Drowning Prevention Week is July 19 to 27, a period of time that kicks off four weeks when the greatest number of drownings occur, according to the Lifesaving Society. - Staff

In 2008, that meant a raise for the mayor from $69,468 to $76,491, and for councillors, from $23,156 to $26,100. In the intervening two years between the raises, council’s pay is increased based on the Vancouver Consumer Price Index (CPI). Those CPI measures meant that by 2013 Gaetz’s salary was up to $90,091 and the pay for Couns. Chuck Stam, Ken Huttema, Ken Popove, Sue Attrill, Stewart McLean and Jason Lum, to $32,119. The mayor’s salary went up by 2.5 per cent for 2014 and the six councillors received a 7.3 per cent

Gaetz made a further $28,683 and claimed $2,534 in expenses for 2013 as chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) board, bringing her total taxpayer-paid salary to more than$120,000 for 2014. Coun. Chuck Stam also earned an extra $8,356 for his role on the FVRD board, and Couns. Ken Popove and Jason Lum each took home $6,613 for their FVRD roles.

While the Times has already reported that 94 employees of the City of Chilliwack were paid more than $75,000 last year, and of those, 36 made more than $100,000, there
are other local statements of remuneration left unexamined. If 94 sounds like a lot, at School District No. 33, 460 employees earned more than $75,000 in 2013 for a total district expenditure of $39.3 million. Topping that pay list was superintendent Evelyn Novak who made $141,519. At the FVRD, 16 employees made more than $75,000 in 2013. Number one on that the list was director of corporate and electoral area administration Suzanne Gresham at $161,863 followed by director of engineering and community services Tareq Islam at $162,385. At the Cultus Lake Park Board, only three employees made more than $75,000: Ron Campbell, David Stelmack and Jesse Miller.

linton Young will make paddling history this summer at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Regina. Along with his competitors from around the continent, Young will be one of the first athletes in the history of the Games to compete in the new kayak category. “I feel very excited and proud to represent B.C. at NAIG, and especially in this new kayak competition, as I am new at kayaking as well,” the 18-year-old said. Regina 2014 NAIG will celebrate North American indigenous cultures with athletes from 21 indigenous regions competing in 14 sports. “I am proud of who I am and what I represent in terms of my heritage, and I will carry myself with dignity and respect when I participate in the games,” said Young who is Sto:lo and Cree on his mother’s side. He will compete in the 500-metre sprint, 1,000-, 3,000and 6,000-metre races, as well as male and mixed canoe doubles. A casual paddler for the last three years, Young didn’t get serious about his training until the opportunity to qualify for NAIG arose in September last year. “His progress in the last 11 months has been outstanding,” said coach Jon Allen. “He’s naturally athletic and is always enthusias-

But Agagnier, who moved to the full-time leadership position this year, said he has a vision for the team, and a desire to see the kids excel. “To strive to make the playoffs you have to get the players to believe you,” he said. The last few years the players themselves have had a lot of doubt, said Agagnier. There was no vision for the team in the past, “it was just, ‘Let’s hope we have a team,’ and I don’t want to hope we have a team.” “Then when things went bad, they accepted it and just said, ‘Here we go again,’ and that’s not going to happen this year. I guarantee you.” His players seemed to be on board with Agagnier’s philosophy. “I see a good group of guys coming in right now,” said third-year player, Cody Vinish. The slotback added that if the group meshes well, they should be an impressive team. It was last season that Vinish earned a starting spot and had his breakout year at slotback. Moving forward, he wants to put

The ball sailed high and deep, was caught for a short return and then players moved back to their positions to repeat the play. On July 26 at 7 p.m. when the football is launched from its tee at the same field, it will be the first chance the 2014 Huskers will have to prove their coaching changes and new line-up are ready to take the team on a winning path. “My goal is the playoffs this year,” said Moe Agagnier, general manager of the team. It might sound like wishful thinking to anyone who has followed the

Home vegetable growers involved in the annual Food Matters Chilliwack plant-a-row-grow-a-row (PARGAR) have begun to drop off surplus fruit and veggies for charity. This year, Ruth and Naomi’s Mission is the beneficiary of the local PARGAR movement as homegrown produce will go for the local charity’s dinner program and weekly produce bags. PARGAR kicked off back in April with gardening workshops hosted by Jack Kouwenhoven and Brian Minter. The first 100 gardeners received garden starter seed kits, and off they went to grow.

charity. More practically, organizer Alanna Clempson said the mandate is for participants to feed their fami-
ly first and donate anything extra to Ruth and Naomi’s. Every Monday evening between 5
and 7 p.m.—starting last week and running until Oct. 6—Clempson and volunteers are at Central Community Church (46100 Chilliwack Central Rd.) to collect and weigh the donated veggies. This is the first year Food Matters has partnered with Ruth and Naomi’s Mission. The first three years the PARGAR donations went to the Salvation Army. The first year, 2011, PARGAR participants donated 572 kilograms of locally grown produce to the Salvation Army’s soup kitchen. In 2012, that was up to more than 1,000 kilograms. Donations appeared to be down in 2013, but Clempson said a considerable volume of food went unweighed, skewing the numbers. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), cantaloupes are grown at the ground level and their outer skin can become contaminated in the field by soil, contaminated water, wildlife, poor handling, or improperly composted manure. When we cut into melons, any bacteria on the outer skin can easily be transferred not only to your knife, cutting board, and serving plate, but also to the inner flesh. The CFIA recommends as one precaution that before cutting fresh cantaloupes to thoroughly wash and scrub them with hot water using a clean produce brush. As further safety measures, it would be wise to wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling cantaloupes as well as the equipment used to prepare them. ne of the favourite foods to help combat the heat of the summer sun is chilled slices of melon. Seeing kids with watermelon juices running down their chins as they submerge their appetites into the cold juicy flesh is a sure sight at almost any outdoor activity. Although watermelons are the most popular suppresser of the scorching temperatures, many also choose cantaloupe, honeydew, or casaba melons to fulfill this activity. Casaba melons are similar in size and shape of cantaloupes and honeydews, but are recognizable by their wrinkled yellow skin. They are not smooth like honeydews nor do they have a netted shell like cantaloupes. The sweet flesh of the casaba can be white, yellow or orange, but it is not as sweet as honeydew, and not as aromatic as cantaloupe. Melons make a great summertime snack as they have a high water content to replenish our overheated bodies along with a low calorie count. One diced cup of any of these four varieties will account for approximately 45 to 65 calories. Honeydew being the highest in calories because of higher sugar content, and watermelonranks only 45th due to, you guessed it, the highest water content. Even though each of these four melons have their own attributing nutritional factors, cantaloupes seem to be the most nutritious of the group.

he U-16 Chilliwack Stealers girls fastpitch team brought home a bronze from the provincials tournament in Port Alberni, July 6. Seen as underdogs all season, the minor girls fastball team’s roster was all first-year bantams with the exception of one player. Odds against them, the Stealers managed to win first place in their district to solidify a spot in the provincial tournament. C
hilliwack is home to all kinds of talent, from acoustic to electric to dance and showmanship. You may be surprised, however, to see that talent on display this summer as 17 buskers take the downtown core by storm. The variety swings from dixieland jazz to classical violin to street magic—and these are just three of the talented performers you might spot as you wander from Decades to the Bookman on a lazy summer afternoon in Downtown Chilliwack.
“Want to see a card trick?” Perrin flicks cards between his fingers, shuffling and re-sorting, their box lying abandoned in the grass behind him. “Want to see a card trick?” he asks a couple of pedestrians. Obligingly they stop, fascinated by the movement and the bright red deck. “Pick a card,” he says. Perrin does magic as a hobby in between playing hockey, studying physics, and working a summer job. He can’t always find time for it, but it’s something he comes back to in fits and starts, whenever he has a minute or two. It started with a deck of cards,
much like the one he’s holding now. After figuring out a couple of tricks, the magic moment happened when he showed some friends. “I got this wonderful look of, ‘How the hell did you do that?’ on their faces,” he recalls. “It’s an addicting feeling.” He spent last summer busking on Hornby Island at the farmers’ market, and decided to pick it up again when he found himself in Chilliwack this summer. He admits it can sometimes be tough to gather any kind of crowd in downtown Chilliwack, but generally sets up at Saturday’s farmers’ market or Party in the Park to take advantage

of foot traffic. But even now, on one of the warmest days of the summer so far, he’s not doing too badly—the first pedestrians that pass agree to stop for a trick or two. “Is this your card?” Perrin says, pulling one from the centre of a nowwell-shuffled deck. The boy shakes his head slowly, not wanting to spoil the magician’s infective enthusiasm. “Of course not,” Perrin says, as though it’s perfectly obvious, pulling another card out of thin air. “Because this is your card.” His small audience laughs and claps, and he modestly shuffles the cards back into their box as they
continue walking down sunny Wellington.
Boy meets violin Hannes got his first taste of busking when he was just six years old. “I guess he got hooked,” laughs his mother, Karin. “That kind of got him the bug, and he’s been doing it ever since. He loves it.” Hannes, now age 10, is one of Chilliwack’s buskers this summer through the street entertainer program. He’s played the violin since he was just five years old, and his playing is peppered with a healthy dose

Going behind the fairytales BY DESSA BAYROCK Special to the Times
S
econdary Characters wants to give their audience a peek into what happens after happily ever after—after the monsters are defeated, the happy couple gets married, and the lost children return home. And while it might not be as glowingly happy as a happy ending, director Adam Charles says Into the Woods sure does give the audience some food for thought. “Maybe their happily ever after isn’t what they thought it would be,” he says with a smile. The first act takes the audience through the part of the story they already know, and the second act delves more deeply into the sense of “now what?” The fairy tales—including well-known characters like Red Riding Hood and Cinderella— twist and grow into new shapes, leading the audience to question the fundamental truths behind the old stories. “It makes you question what truly makes a villain and what truly makes a hero,” Charles explains. “It’s the difference between being

All in all, the ideas behind the show—what’s really required for a happy ending, and what is truly important in life—will res-
onate with audience members of all ages. “There’s a good sense of family, and what makes a family— not necessarily in the traditional sense,” he says. And best of all, Charles says he has the cream of the crop in terms of talent onstage to bring the story to life, hailing from across the Valley. “We could have cast this show five times out of the talent that

ed about the amount he practices, picking up the instrument whenever he has a spare minute or two. “I usually play a half hour or an hour,” he says. “Sometimes it’s two hours. Sometimes it’s maybe ten minutes. It’s a little here and there.” His music crosses genres between rock and classical, meaning Nirvana is just as likely to make an appearance as Beethoven.
But no matter what he plays, Hannes knows one thing for sure: one day he’s going to be a professional violinist. “Unless I break my arm or something,” Hannes is quick to amend. “It’s good to do a lot of math so you have a good backup if your arm breaks or something.” “He’s young, so you never know—he might end up being an engineer or something,” Karin says with a smile. “But if people ask him what he’s going to be, he’s never said anything but violinist.” This summer he’ll be practicing his skills in downtown Chilliwack—busking in a variety of locations along Wellington and making appearances at Party in the Park. And although Karin says Hannes can make a pretty good earning in just a couple of hours, it’s never been about the money for him. “He shares it with charity always,” Karin says. “Half of the proceeds go straight to the Children’s Hospital.” “It really helps a lot to make a change, right?” Hannes says. “For research, for cancer and stuff, it really helps. It really makes a difference.”

Allin William, “Bill” Alfred 1942 ~ 2014 Bill passed away on July 6, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his partner of 20 years Penny, sons Darcy and Kelly, daughter Holly, grandsons Joel and Christopher, and granddaughter Nicole. He is also survived by his brothers, Bruce and Norman and sister, Mabel all of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Bill moved his family from Saskatchewan to Chilliwack in 1972 to get away from the long Saskatchewan winters. He worked as a technician for the BCAI Centre for many years before starting up his own business, Fraser Valley Breeders.
