Douglas suspect in double homicide Recently had attempted murder charges C dropped in case involving local shooting Aaron James David Douglas

hilliwack RCMP say a Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued for a suspect in a recent double homicide, the same man who recently had attempted murder charges against him dropped. Two men were found dead and a woman was found injured in a home in the 46100-block Gore Avenue on Aug. 7. A news release from the Integrated

Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said a suspect has been identified and police are looking for Aaron James David Douglas, 33. Police said he has a criminal record that begins in 1996 and he is believed to be armed and dangerous. Douglas is wanted for the two murders and

the attempted murder of the woman. Attempted murder charges against Douglas were dropped mid-trial July 24 after Crown decided their was no substantial likelihood of conviction. Douglas was charged after Jeff Karpes was shot twice in the chest while sitting in a car on Dec. 23, 2012.

“IHIT is asking the public to be vigilant and call 911 if you know the whereabouts of Aaron Douglas. Do not approach him or attempt to apprehend him yourself as he may be armed and dangerous,” Staff-Sgt. Jennifer Pound said. The murdered men were identified as 38-year-old Richard Blackmon and 36-year-old Tyler Belcourt. The injured woman wasn’t named by police. All three were shot.

xactly one hundred years ago Thursday, William Valentine Ashley penned his first war diary entry as he embarked from Curragh, Ireland to enter the Great War. He and his brother Joseph served together in the Fourth Hussar Regiment in France, and both kept journals despite a ban on personal records by the military. Those two journals sat continents away from each other until this year, when they reunited along with the descendants who dug them unwittingly out of storage generations later.

Harmony on the Fraser event set for Saturday

I

t’s expected to be a bountiful year for fishers of all varieties along the Fraser River in 2014. With salmon numbers predicted to be high, the quantity of anglers will also increase along the river’s banks, eager to take home their share. The Fraser River Fisheries Peacemakers is holding an event on Island 22 Saturday to remind people to celebrate salmon fishing “with a focus on safety, cooperation and respect”. Harmony on the Fraser will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. near the boat launch and will include materials on display, dry casting demonstrations and water safety tips. Groups from First Nations fishers, sports fisher men and other stakeholders and interest groups will be present to talk to interested parties. The creation of the Peacemakers rose out of a conflict on the river in 2009 between recreational anglers and First Nations fishers—two groups long at odds with one another. one of the residents gathered in the activity room at Cascade Lodge speak more than a “konichiwa” in Japanese. But that didn’t stop the elderly group from transcending language with 19 visiting high schoolers from Kasukabe City last Wednesday afternoon. The students sang songs in both English (Oh Canada) and their native tongue (the Kasukabekyoei school song), then all ages made origami animals together. “We try to give them as much of a Canadian experience as possible,” said Ann Hanson, Elite Canadian Home stay program coordinator, listing off activities the students get to experience. There’s a Skwah war canoe paddle, a trip to Harrison Lake, shopping in a Canadian mall and of course: a trip to McDonald’s. The program is designed to bring Japanese students into immersion situa-

“It promotes mutual understandings and prevents narrow-mindedness.” For two weeks the students spent their mornings practising language relevant to the planned activities of that day. Exchange student Kako Morioka used her new-found communication skills to stock up on maple syrup souvenirs on a shopping trip in Vancouver with her host mother’s son. Her schoolmate Keita Hiyama said his favourite activity was watching the Whitecaps play FC Dallas at BC Place. “It was very exciting,” said the 17-yearold. They basked in the activities, weather and scenery of the Lower Mainland, but it’s not just the students who benefitted. David Zhang of Chilliwack is the “buddy” leader of the group, present to keep the students speaking English and avoid slipping back into Japanese. “It’s helped me grow as a person,” he said. “You get to expose yourself to new culture and learn about the world.” { See VISIT, page A10 }

{ JOURNALS, from page A1 } Chilliwack resident Rich Fulcher discovered his grandfather William’s diary after asking his mother about it one day in 2001. “He died when my mom was three so she didn’t even really know him,” says Fulcher. “When my grandmother remarried a lot of his stuff just kind of disappeared into the back cupboards.” “So there was nothing ever really known about him except this diary he left and a couple of his medals that he left behind.” The discovery turned into an obsession. After trying to read the small faded handwriting in the diary, Fulcher decided he needed to transcribe the entire book digitally using magnifying glass to help. Some stains and physical particles actually leave evidence of his grandfather, speculates Fulcher. The residue from the trenches where he was fighting and the cigarette ashes tell as much as the words within the book. “Even the way his writing changed over the whole thing,” he says. “You can see the stress hitting him through the year that he wrote it.” In 2005, Fulcher started sharing his records and research on the Great War Forum online. Aura of power is a big problem

lison Redford resigned her seat as an Alberta MLA last Tuesday. She may be taking the Alberta Progressive Conservatives out the door with her — polls show that the party is in rough shape, just two years after Redford took it to an historic victory, in an election where the PCs had been behind in the polls. Alberta is booming. The oil business is strong, and there are plenty of jobs available. Taxes are low and housing prices are lower than here. The PCs are long in the tooth—they have been in office since 1971, under six different premiers. They have benefited from the Alberta preference of keeping one party in power for long stretches of time, until the public eventually tires of them. The PCs are now in year 43. The reason Redford resigned as premier in March, and now as MLA, was her spending habits. She used government aircraft for personal and party business, and it has recently come out that her staff would book fictional passengers so that she didn’t have to share the private jets with anyone— that is, her own MLAs. She took arrogance and entitlement to a new level, one rarely seen anywhere else in Canada. Auditor-General Merwan Saher wrote “How could this have happened? The answer is the aura of power around Premier Redford and her office and the perception that the influence of the office should not be questioned.” That phrase sums up the way most governments in Canada operate.

his weekend, the Vancouver Sun reported that Alberta billionaire Murray Edwards helped organize a $1 million fundraiser for the B.C. Liberal party at the Calgary Petroleum Club last year. Rapidly becoming a household name in B.C., Edwards of course is the controlling shareholder of Imperial Metals, which operates the Mount Polley Mine. Putting aside that the cash was raised in another province and likely from folk who can’t vote in B.C., Edwards’ political generosity didn’t stop at selecting canapes for his oil and gas pals. Since 2005, Imperial Metals has donated at least $149,890 to the B.C. Liberals. With a win, place and show wager, that total includes $2,500 to each of the leadership campaigns of Christy Clark, Kevin Falcon and George Abbott. It also tossed $3,000 into the kitty for Bill Bennett’s 2009 re-election campaign. Mount Polley got in on the action as well, with the mine topping up donations to the Liberals by $46,720. Now every single cent of those donations could simply be because Edwards is a swell guy and Imperial a swell company. But that won’t wash away what some call the sewer scents of B.C. poli-

Nearly half of Imperial Metal’s donations were made after Christy Clark was sworn in as premier, while $45,720 of Mount Polley’s donations came via six separate cheques issued in one week alone in March 2013. All of which is why the October 2012 presentation of Byng Giraud before B.C.’s Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services is so fascinating. Giraud—then vice-president, corporate affairs at Imperial Metals—called on the B.C. government to retain the flow-through tax credits for the exploration industry, to keep the PST off capital investments for mining companies and, most importantly, to reduce the approval process for a new mine from upwards of ten years to as little as three. As he noted to the committee: “I think

if we’re really looking for some flexibility on budget in terms of the mining sector, there is perhaps some wiggle room, but it needs to be in the context of I’m going to build a mine in three years, so maybe I’ll tolerate those additional tax rates. People are willing to pay for certainty and for time.” Lo and behold, six months later, the B.C. Liberal party was promising voters that it would streamline the mining application processes, work with the federal government to ensure mining projects undergo only one environmental review process, and that it would extend the new mine allowance and other credits allowing new mines and mine expansions to receive depreciation credits of up to 133 per cent to 2020. This past January—in a speech to the B.C. Association for Mineral Exploration —Premier Clark took it further promising a review of B.C.’s environmental assessment office to make it “more effective and efficient,” claiming that “over the years, the environmental assessment process has gotten so long, so difficult and so complex that communities, proponents, can’t get a yes, can’t get a no.” Flashback to 2012 and consider what

Giraud said then: “I know that if we could get these down to three to five years—for yes, no or whatever, instead of the long maybe—then there would be incentive for people to throw more money at these things.” This past June, Clark issued new mandate letters to each cabinet minister. In Bill Bennett’s letter she congratulated him for extending the flow-through tax credit program through 2014 and for reducing red tape for the mining industry. His mandate now includes working with the Finance ministry to extend the new mine allowance and other industry credits to 2020. Oh, the PST still doesn’t apply to capital investments for mining companies either. There was one last thing about Giraud’s presentation that jumped out. Arguing his case for a shorter approval process, he claimed: “Nobody trusts experts anymore from an NGO or from a third party, saying: “You know what? Editor: A personal plea to the Ministry of Education and the B.C. Teachers Federation. Quit playing games, get your act together, our kids need to go back to school. I have wanted to write this letter for a number of weeks now, but have had a difficult time finding the appropriate words. And now I am angry. A few weeks ago I was saddened to hear that a former student of mine had passed away. He was only 25 and I am doubtful that his passing was from natural causes. (My sincere, heartfelt sympathies are extended to the family at this time.) Ten years ago another of my students died in the Chilliwack Hospital of unnatural causes. He was about the same age. And so, I am angry. I am angry at the Ministry, the government, the teachers union and anyone else who wants to prolong this strike. These two young men had completely opposite backgrounds, but the one thing they had in common was that they both struggled at school. My colleagues and I tried desperately to help them, but to no avail. As young teens they quit our school and tried a different school, only to leave that one as well. They chose their own path and to my knowledge I don’t think either one graduated. In those days, educational assistants were plentiful and the Learning Assistance Programs were vibrant and active. They provided academic assistance for all children who needed the extra help, whether they had an Individual Educational Plan or not. We all did our very best to supply each and every child with whatever they needed. All it really takes is for one person to be able to connect with that one child and even though they struggle in their current lives, they will eventually succeed as an adult. However, even with all the help that was available in our school at that time, two young adults never got a chance to show the world their inner talents. Despite all the support we had, the system still failed these two kids. I shudder to think how difficult it must be in the school system today where cutbacks have made it impossible for schools to provide the support needed for every student to succeed. What will happen to our struggling kids in the near future?

These are smart, enthusiastic young men and women who want to better themselves and be independent, contributing citizens in our community. The school system has not been kind to them, which is why they have chose to homeschool and hire me as their tutor. They know that in this day and age, in order to even get a job, one needs to graduate from Grade 12. I have five students who are currently slated to graduate this year—not many, compared to the local high schools, who graduate hundreds at a time, but these students have worded hard and persevered with alternate learning styles other people will never begin to understand. I feel responsible for these young people and I don’t want to see them knocked down any more. The current school system has already done a good job of that. So, please—for the sake of our kids, my grandkids and my graduating young adults, do what it takes to settle this strike. Get our kids and young adults back in school so at least they have a fighting chance for success. These kids are our future leaders, and we need to recognize the importance of investing in them now. Prevent, rather than react, to crisis Editor: Re: Mt. Polley Mine tailings breach. The cure for the sickness this has inflicted on the environment and the public We need to treat this disaster as one treats a human health crisis: 1. Apply antibiotics to stem the emergency and get us through the crisis stage of the sickness; 2. Treat the long term health and address the systemic cause of the sickness using a more holistic approach. Demanding that regulations be increased, new mining proposals be put on hold, etc. is the antibiotics. We have to get the organism through the immediate crisis. But this is stop-gap only: again and again we’ve seen demonstrated the failure of government regulation to effect long-term health in their respective fields. Just as using antibiotics longterm is counter-productive, resorting to short-term or knee-jerk measures doesn’t create that long-term health. The holistic approach in human health considers the complete picture of what builds good health —not just provide a medicinal fire extinguisher when disaster strikes. It considers not only what the body needs nutritionally, but also exercise and relaxation and other lifestyle factors that support robust health. It is the very definition of proactive thinking. This is the ideal metaphor for this environmental health crisis. We need new models of governance where expert recommendations don’t simply gather dust on a shelf. Where the concerns of local people are not ignored by decision makers in distant cities. Where concerns of experienced front-line people like Gerald MacBurney are addressed and incidents like this are prevented rather than reacted to. We need planning that would, for example, put in place capacity to manage tailings before allowing the tailings to be produced, and that would project for the likelihood of greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events and engineer to cope. We need to consider the model of local governance and decision-making advocated by organizations like The WaterWealth Project. Wayne Froese Chilliwack

nother Chilliwack temperature record was broken Monday, even as the end of summer fast approaches. Aug. 11 was the hottest on record for the day at 35.6 C, according to Roger Pannett, Environment Canada volunteer weather observer. Kraig Krause is the new play-by-play man for the Chilliwack Chiefs. position this season. “I said, ‘Definitely,’” said Krause. “Being able to come back here and be involved with the Chief’s culture . . . It was natural.” It’s been all studies and little action for the self-admitted newbie to play by play, but he said he isn’t worried. “I’m trying to soak in as much wisdom and knowledge from everyone around me that’ve been in the business and have done play by play,” he said. “And knowing [the indi-

viduals] as people rather than just as players—I think that’ll bring something really special to the city and to the broadcast booth.” Continuing his studies at University of the Fraser Valley, he’ll be taking a lighter load in order to dedicate the time he needs to gain that intimacy with the club. But he said the extra effort and time needed to take on the Chief duties and go to school won’t even seem like work.

Kraig Krause, 25, returns home to call the local games online, on Shaw TV, and with reports on 89.5 FM The Drive. “Kraig is the epitome of a team player and he has an incredible work ethic and a contagious positive attitude,” said Chiefs marketing director Barry Douglas. Planning for Back to School Message from Superintendent

With the end of summer fast approaching, the Chilliwack Board of Education is hopeful that we will be able to welcome students, families, and staff to the 20142015 school year on September 2nd.

Our school opening approaches and we are hopeful that it will begin on September 2nd as planned. This is a difficult time for our school district and community and the uncertainty of our fall start-up. In 2014-2015 our doors will open to approximately 12,000 students and over 1,700 teachers, administrators, managers and support staff, in our 32 schools.

We are proud of the Chilliwack School District and the relationships we have with our staff, parents and community partner groups as we work together to provide programs and services to meet the learning needs of our community’s children and youth.

› Sports Turnovers play major role in Huskers loss

The Valley Huskers held their own against the visiting Westshore Rebels until the fourth quarter Saturday at Exhibition Stadium. Losing 28-14, the Huskers were within a single touchdown’s reach most of the game, but couldn’t quite catch their opponents. Defensive tackle Jessie Smith played exceptionally with a QB sack and two blocked kicks. And while the offence of the huskers was more impressive on paper than the Rebels’, the home team gave the ball up three times. The Rebels returned two interceptions for a total gain of 116 yards. Huskers Cody Parray is tackled out of bounds on a punt return against the Westshore Rebels at Exhibition Stadium Saturday. Parray gained 121 yards on six punt returns in the game.

The Society offers a free workshop in Chilliwack on Sept. 3 titled “Getting to Know Dementia,” which explores the effects of the disease, local support options, and strategies to live well with dementia. The workshop is meant not only for people experiencing

t’s a word with terrifying implications: dementia. Dementia isn’t a disease in and of itself, but a state of confusion caused by a variety of factors—including Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer ’s lands unsurprisingly far up on the list of diseases feared by aging Canadians—falling second only to cancer, according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. And while dementia can be

dementia, but also for family members and friends close to someone with dementia. The society notes, however, that this workshop isn’t intended for the general public or workers in health care, although all are welcome and the workshop is offered without charge. As the Canadian population ages, the disease is becoming more of an issue locally as well as nationally.

According to the 2011 census, roughly 35 per cent of Chilliwack’s population falls into the 60 and over bracket, pointing to an increasing elderly demographic in the city going forward. ◗ The workshop takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 3 in Evergreen Hall’s Minto Room. Ag funds provide special equipment

he Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for We s te r n E co n o m ic Diversification, announced funding of over $2.1 million for state-of-the-art training equipment for the Agriculture Center of Excellence at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) last week. The investment will provide specialized equipment to train the next generation of agricultural technicians, engineers, researchers, and scientists. The

training equipment will enhance existing programs and offer two new programs related to designing and implementing automated agricultural systems and robotics. “The agriculture industry is an important driver of the western Canadian economy. This investment will provide industry with the skilled workforce it needs to adopt new technologies, services and processes, and ultimately grow the agriculture sector,” Rempel said.

I

f you’ve ever met a member of Chilliwack’s large Forstbauer family you may have noticed something that you kept to yourself. Most of the 12 adult children who are involved with the farm, along with patriarch Hans and matriarch Mary, have the faintly, brown-tinged skin of a coal miner, a mechanic or a vegetable farmer. That’s not dirt. That’s soil. And it’s not enough to say that soil permeates the skin of this, the first family of Chilliwack organic vegetable growing. No, for them, soil is in their very souls. “We take care of the soil,” Niklaus Forstbauer says in his understated way. There is a spiritual aspect to the Forstbauers’ devotion to the soil, and how the positive microbes within the growing medium win out over the harmful ones. “In the end, good always beats the bad,” Niklaus says. There are something like seven million species of micro-organisms in one teaspoon of soil. And sure, the bad ones (e.g. e. coli) have names, but the good ones are too numerous

Soil is in their souls The Forstbauer family were organic before there was an organic movement

to name. And that’s good news for growing. Above ground there are also pests that some farmers fend off with chemicals. But even non-chemical, certified organic sprays are avoided by the Forstbauers. “If we put a spray on to wipe out a certain living organism we also wipe out all the beneficial ones,” Niklaus explains. “We build our soil with compost and compost teas. “There is no silver bullet [to dealing with pests]. The silver bullet is a healthy farm.” Forstbauer Family Natural Food Farm consists of 20 acres on Prairie Central Road and 70 acres on Gibson Road. It was established by Hans and Mary at their current location in 1988, but they had been farming this way since 1976. The Forstbauers were organic before there was an organic movement.

Touring the Prairie Central Road farm with brothers Niklaus and Travis, looking into hoop frames at strawberries and zucchinis, we see Hans come towards us. Hans has a white shock of hair balanced by an equally large white beard and a jovial smile for visitors. He doesn’t slow down as he walks by, says hello, commenting only on this reporter’s “sun kisses” (freckles) before carrying on his busy way. Hans’ father was an agriculture professor in Germany and was always a follower of biodynamic agriculture, that slightly eccentric and holistic farming technique developed by Rudolf Steiner. Biodynamic agriculture practitioners treat the entire farm as one, breathing, living organism that should be mostly self-sustaining. No one part is separate from any other and, just as its best to avoid the

ingestion of toxic substances into the human body, so too do the Forstbauers not only eschew pesticides and herbicides, they don’t even use organic top dressings or other inputs of any kind. This is certified organic agriculture taken to the next level. This is about taking care of the soil. There are aspects of biodynamic agriculture that go beyond even certified organic farming, such as using an astrological sowing and planting calendar, and burying ground quartz stuffed into the horn of a cow to help the “cosmic forces” in the soil. Surrounded as they are on four sides by Dutch dairy farmers in East Chilliwack, the Forstbauers are an island of pure, hands-on vegetable growing amid a sea of industrial agri-business. Walking the property with Niklaus and Travis, I point to corn in the dis-

tance and ask to confirm if that’s the back of their 20-acre property. “Yes, that’s that dairy farmer’s Monsanto corn,” Niklaus says. “Well, it’s not exactly his,” jokes Travis, alluding to the fact that farmers who purchase the patented seed from Monsanto are subject to lawsuits if they try to save seed. The Forstbauers certainly have their way of doing things, but they aren’t judgmental, at least not openly. “They are doing what they are told is the best thing to do,” Niklaus says of their neighbours. For all the vegetables they produce, Forstbauer vegetables are mostly only available at farmers markets around the Lower Mainland. Cooking pasta for the best results A

staple in almost every home’s pantry is spaghetti or some form of pasta that makes its way to the dinner table on a regular basis. Many of us take the time to focus on building the flavour and complexity of the accompanying sauce for our pasta of choice; however, the pasta itself needs attention as well. Many food columns could be dedicated to achieving palate-pleasing goals in pasta sauces, but let us not forget about the substance of these dishes—the pasta noodle. Thus this column will be focused on unraveling some myths and procedures in what seems to be one of the simplest tasks in the kitchen—boiling water and cooking pasta. The first thing to examine is the dry pasta noodle and the transformation that takes place during the cooking process. The most obvious observation is that cooked pasta is larger in volume and flexible, compared to dry raw pasta. What makes this possible is the absorption of water during the boiling process. The cooking process of any food, no matter how simple it seems, needs to be analyzed because this is our chance of infusing flavour into the ingredients being cooked. Everyone has heard of the process of salting water when boiling

On Cooking pasta, but few know or realize the reason why. Some believe it is to help the pasta from sticking or to help keep the water from boiling over; however the reason is to season the pasta and to increase the flavour. Pasta on its own is very bland, and combining bland cooked pasta with a sauce that you have perfected will be a detriment to your finished dish. If the pasta water is salted liberally then the pasta will be absorbing salt-water, instead of just water, and thus your pasta dish will be seasoned from the inside out. Another no-no is to add oil to your pasta water. This idea probably first came about to prevent the pasta noodles from sticking together, however it will affect your finished dish negatively. Oiled pasta water will help to keep your pasta from sticking together when cooking, but a film of oil will always be left on the drained noodles. This thin film of oil will inhibit the starchiness of the cooked pasta and in turn the accompanying sauce

will not stick to or absorb into the noodles as much. When pasta is eaten you want the starchiness of the pasta to hold onto the sauce as much as possible, so that the dish will be able to be enjoyed to the fullest. That being said, drained, cooked pasta should not be oiled for the same reason. A better way to help prevent your pasta noodles from sticking together during the cooking process is to stir the noodles constantly for the first two minutes of cooking time. By that point the water will have returned to its full-boil action and the agitation of the bubbling water will keep the pasta moving and prevent it from sticking. Once the pasta has been drained, do not rinse it. Rinsing will cool the pasta down and also wash away some of the starchiness that we want to help secure the sauce to the noodles. Homemade “spaghetti” is a very common dish in many households, and whether you use spaghetti, linguine, or other types of noodles, I hope these few simple recommendations

help to make your meal more enjoyable and flavourful. Dear Chef Dez: What is the best way to tell when pasta is cooked? Norma L. Maple Ridge Dear Norma: There are many ways that people use to determine that pasta is cooked to perfection—including the old wives’ tale about throwing it against the wall, and if it sticks, it’s done. The best way is to let your mouth do the talking. Carefully remove a strand or piece of pasta from the boiling water. After waiting a few seconds to cool down, take a bite. It should feel “el dente’” meaning “to the tooth” in Italian. This relates to the feeling that the pasta should not be overcooked and offer some resistance when biting into it. It should not be hard, but should not be too soft and mushy either. Outdoor concert series set for Sardis

P

arty in the Park is a familiar sight to those around downtown Chilliwack: one part block party, one part open market, three parts giant stage and live, local music. And this summer, Jeff Bonner of Tractorgrease Multimedia aims to bring a taste of that experience to the south side of Chilliwack, starting on Aug. 14. Along with a host of volunteers, Bonner will be setting up a stage in the field next to the Vedder Bridge in Sardis, where half a dozen local musical acts will perform on Thursdays for the next three weeks. Bonner is a staple of Chilliwack’s

music scene, as one of the “great creators” behind Tractorgrease Multimedia in town. Once he put his mind to putting on the Southside shows, the musicians came together in a snap. “I know all the bands that are involved in this—they’ve been around, or they’ve worked in the studio, or been a part of my jams,” he says. “We’re just trying to create a cool outdoor music event for the south side of town.” Setting up by the river was a natural choice—it’s close to the heart of the Sardis community, and just a short jaunt from Cultus and Yarrow. Best of all, the spot highlights the beauty of Chilliwack; mountains rise around the site, and the Vedder River rushes below.

“We knew that right down by the river would be the perfect spot,” Bonner says. “It’s by the Rotary Trail and Garrison Crossing, so people can just walk down to the event.” All in all, it’s designed as a lowkey way to spend a summer evening. More and more obstacles appear every year, but ultimately Firkus can’t envision a future without the flight fest. “There are a few challenges that we have with the airport—since it’s right in the middle of the City of Chilliwack,” he says with a laugh. He describes the challenge of rerouting traditional flight space away from Chances Casino and diverting a brand-new bus route away from Airport Road for the day of the flight fest. Even discussing these obstacles, the good humour doesn’t leave his voice. “It’s all the little logistical challenges as the city grows,” he explains simply. “It puts more and more pressure as far as making things happen around here… but everything’s coming together—knock on wood!”

pilots to strut their stuff and show off the tricks of the trade. Many of them have day jobs as commercial pilots, although more than a few are professional competition pilots on the side. Kent Pietsch, for example, practically has flying in his blood. “I think he’s been doing it for, what, 30 years now?” Firkus says. “And his father was an aerobatic pilot, so it’s been in the family for years.” Pietsch is one of the new pilots at the airshow this year. His show is a little different than what Chilliwack audiences are used to, Firkus says slyly—it’s a comedy act sponsored by Jelly Belly, although that’s all he’ll say. “He’s very entertaining, and it’s a very different show,” he says mysteriously. here’s a new kid in town for the Chilliwack Airshow on Aug. 16 and 17, and people are already lining up to meet her. She’s a P51 Mustang. And according to Airshow organizer Ray Firkus, she’s a beauty. On loan from the Tillamook Museum in Oregon, this is her first time in Canada. Originally commissioned in 1945, she’s been restored to her original glory—and then some. Bringing in this piece of history was a natural choice, Firkus says. “Last year we had a Spitfire—also a warbird—which was a big hit,” he says. “But the Mustang, as far as I’m concerned, is the really cool thing. It’s a multi-million dollar warbird, so they don’t take it out too much.” The Mustang is painted in the colours of the Red Tail Squadron— also known as the Tuskegee Airmen—which was the first squadron of black pilots and air support crews trained for the Second World War. It’s a slice of American history that resonates just as well in Canada. “A lot of people are familiar with the Red Tail Squadron and the significance of that group,” Firkus says. The Mustang is one of many attractions at the show this year, which has grown bigger, better, and brighter over the last 22 years. Firkus, who’s been with it since the beginning, never fails to be delighted by the variety of planes and performers that return to the valley every summer. Picking a favourite part, he says, is impossible. “It’s like watching a movie— what’s your favourite part? It’s the whole, as it evolves, and it’s very entertaining and exciting,” he says with a smile. All in all, the show is a chance for
