A

Chilliwack secondary student thumbs a message into his phone about the crooked star on the school Christmas tree during break. He watches as seconds later, almost all of his peers in sight look up at the star to see if it’s true. This localized, instant and widespread power to influence and entertain comes from a year-old mobile messaging platform that has received a lot of attention this week in the middle and secondary school systems. Yik Yak, the aptly named real-time virtual bulletin board, is designed to be a digital space where people in the same small geographic radius can share useful information. The emphasis on location and the ability to post anonymously is what differentiates the app from the hundreds of other social media selections and has gained it popularity on university campuses. Put in the hands of a small but loud section of the teenage demographic, however, the results of Yik Yak are less like a bulletin board and more akin to scrawls on the bathroom wall containing rumours and nastiness. “If you didn’t want to go to that washroom and read about what somebody wrote about you on the

n RCMP officer’s ability to pinpoint smell may prove to be central to the trial of the man alleged to be behind the largest marijuana grow operation in Chilliwack’s history. Seven days into the trial-within-a-trial of Lloyd Allan McConnell, his lawyer argued there was no basis to grant the 2009 search warrant that uncovered a sophisticated 11,520-plant grow-op in an underground bunker on Nixon Road. Defence lawyer Patrick McGowan’s central argument rests on the fact that Const. Chad Mufford swore in an affidavit to obtain the search warrant that he smelled “a strong odour of wafting marijuana” coming from 7630 Nixon Rd. Not only did Mufford walk by only once, McGowan argued, but the officer was unable to visually see much of the remote hillside property, and, critically, there happened to be an investigation underway into a possible grow-op at the adjacent property at 7640 Nixon Rd. “He just doesn’t have a basis to suggest that marijuana was emanating from the property,” McGowan argued in front of Justice Miriam Maisonville last week in court. McGowan has argued that McConnell’s Section 8 Charter privacy rights were violated when police searched his property on Sept. 9, 2009. That day, nearly 12,000 pot plants

Teen pleas in tragic death

A 19-year-old man pleaded guilty in Chilliwack Court on Tuesday to dangerous driving causing death in connection with a tragic accident last summer. Ryan Mitchell Potts was scheduled to go to trial, but instead made the plea. On Aug. 25, 2013, 18-year-old Adam Burchart fell out of the box of a pickup truck travelling on Boundary Road in Yarrow. The teenager died at the scene of the late night accident. Burchart was one of two men riding in the box, and another man was in the truck that Potts was driving. All four men were from Chilliwack.

Accused claims innocence

A convicted killer arrested in connection with an unrelated attempted murder from 2009 in Chilliwack had his second court appearance this week, and again professed his innocence. “I just want to tell the court I’m innocent of these allegations,” Gregory Wayne Hiles said in Chilliwack Court Monday via video link from the Surrey Pretrial Centre. Hiles is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and robbery in connection with a Dec. 23, 2009 incident in Chilliwack. The 35-year-old was convicted of manslaughter in the 2000 beating death of 19-year-old Christopher Ford in Halifax.

Horse abuse sentence

A Chilliwack woman was given a $500 fine and forbidden from taking care of large animals for three years after pleading guilty to two animal cruelty charges. Suzanne Peterson told Judge Steven Point Monday she took on the already sick animals when she had the money to take care of them. Point accepted her claim that once she was hit with financial difficulties, she couldn’t care for the horses any more and worked with the SPCA to relocated them.

iny wood shavings scattered in a doorway at Pedro Carreon’s downtown Chilliwack home could be evidence of a patient thief. The splintered wooden frame and shattered leaded glass door, however, illustrates an end to that patience.

And the fact that the 83-year-old’s home and garage has been broken into four times this year—including three times in just six days last week—is a sign of a persistent thief. “You shouldn’t be having to live like you are behind bars,” Brian Harrison told the Times. Harrison is a friend of Carreon’s who has been watching the house while the elderly man, who suffers from Alzheimers, among other ailments, is in the Philippines. Carreon lives in the small, somewhat dilapidated house downtown Chilliwack with his sister who is in her 70s. The woman left the convent in the Philippines to care for Carreon here in Chilliwack. The two are currently in the Philippines and have been there for close to a month.

“He’s worked hard all his life and his sister has been dedicated to her religion,” Harrison said. “And then they have to deal with this.” It started last Wednesday, Nov. 19, when a thief or thieves broke in through the locked side door on the house. By the look of the shavings on the floor, someone tried to file away the wood enough to get at the lock. But eventually they just smashed the leaded glass door in half. When Harrison and his wife got to the house Thursday, the inside had been ransacked, drawers dumped out, cupboard contents tossed around the house. Then on Friday, it happened again. Whoever was trying to break in got into the back laundry room, but couldn’t get into the main house. This time, though, he or she or they found a win-

dow into the basement from which they stole tools. On Saturday, Harrison decided to stake the house out to see if he could see something. He watched from a van across the street from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m. Sunday, but spotted nothing. Then Sunday night, the garage was broken into although there was nothing of value to steal. Harrison called 9-1-1 in each instance, but RCMP officers who attended were able to offer little help. “The guys are really nice but I know we are not a priority,” he said. “Surely something more can be done.” The house in question is cluttered inside and on the lawn outside. Crown counsel Michael LeDressay had asked for a stiff sentence due to the size of the “monstrous criminal enterprise,” but Justice William Grist gave the 64-year-old an 18-month conditional sentence. McConnell’s lawyer began last week by reiterating Crown arguments from the preliminary hearing. Instead of distancing the man from the property, McGowan argued the property owner was intimately connected with 7630 Nixon Rd.—and the grow-op itself—as a lead up to argue the man’s Charter rights were violated. (Interestingly, four years ago, a different lawyer argued that city hall should not file notice on title of the property because of hazardous conditions because the McConnell was an “innocent victim” who knew nothing of the grow operation on his property.) On Tuesday in court, Nixon Road neighbour Clint Marvin faced questions about the time in 2007 when he discovered an “apparatus” in Elk Creek leading him to suspect there was a growop on McConnell’s property. Marvin told police what he suspected, they attended his property but he said he never heard back from them. That was two and a half years before the bust. McGowan focused on a walk Marvin took with officers onto a water right-of-way he has on 7630 Nixon Rd., presumably to further the argument that officers acted improperly, even trespassed on the property of the accused. Later on the stand Tuesday was City of Chilliwack bylaw enforcement official Jaris Marshall who attended the property the day of the bust to inspect it at the invitation of the RCMP. McConnell’s trial is scheduled to continue the rest of this week.

Windy Season Fence will keep out homeless › News

T

he construction of a fence to stop people from gathering under the Yale Road overpass downtown Chilliwack has spurred a number of debates on social media on the issue of homelessness. Problems under the overpass have plagued the city and police for years. Public safety, too, is an issue as garbage, discarded needles and human feces have been found at the location near McDonald’s and other businesses. In connection with the Chilliwack Healthier Community Partnership (CHC)—a group made up of 32 local agencies and organizations—the city started to build the fence Monday and work with other groups to find shelter for those affected. “The CHC is hopeful that fencing off the area in combination with increased education and awareness of services will help address this situation,” a city press release said. Through ongoing discussions, the CHC has investigated what the barriers are for some homeless individuals who do not use shelter beds. Part of the problem is the security of personal belongings. To help, the city will provide the Salvation Army with a used storage container that will be placed on Salvation Army property, and be locked and secure at all times. “We are very pleased with the pro-active, compassionate and collaborative approach taken by the

And while the city’s approach to the problem under the overpass has been lauded by some, including many social service agencies that make up CHC, some have criticized the move. In a Facebook post Monday, Brigida Crosbie—who ran unsuccessfully for Chilliwack city council on Nov. 15—asked Mayor Sharon Gaetz why “you waited until after the elections to completely fence under the bridge so the Homeless people of our City had NO place to lay their head.” Crosbie said the fence is costing taxpayer dollars, the same dollars that some people complain about being spent.

“The truth is it now takes the homeless people from underneath the bridge where policing was easier because they were all in one spot to now being dispersed all through Chilliwack,” she said. Gaetz responded to Crosbie’s post. “Brigida—get off of your soapbox,” she wrote. “We provided spaces for all of the people under the bridge if they wish to take advantage of it. We also provided safe and secure places for their belongings.” Gaetz added that the city has helped provide funding in recent years for a number of homes, such as on School Street and near city hall. The move to build the fence Monday and provide storage for people is part of a multifaceted CHC approach to address homelessness in a community-wide way.

Need to move on child poverty

veryone is gearing up for the Christmas season, that wonderful time of year focused on giving. There are food drives collecting for the food bank, and campaigns of all kinds to help those in need, including toy drives trying to ensure all children have something waiting for them under the Christmas tree. This is a great thing, and it is good-hearted people that both organize and contribute to them. But the best they can hope for, and it is a good goal, is to alleviate some of the need. The sad fact is, the issue of child poverty is not going to be solved by a once-a-year campaign. According to the annual report released by First Call, a coalition of advocacy groups, child poverty is on the rise in B.C. rather than declining. According to the B.C. Child Poverty Report Card, 169,240 children were living below the poverty line in this province in 2012. Last year, the report said 153,000 children. First Call set out 19 recommendations in their report with a goal of reducing the provincial child poverty rate to seven per cent by 2020. The recommendations cover a range, from raising the minimum wage to increased child tax benefits and rescinding cuts to Employment Insurance. But what they all have in common is the need for provincial and federal governments to address the problem. When we see the enormity of the problem of child poverty, it is clear it is time for upper levels of government to join in the fight to make some long-term change.

From locker stuffing to Yik Yak

T

here is a tendency as we age to both look backward with nostalgic reverence, but also compare what we experienced as young people as if it were harder, worse, tougher than kids today who “have it so easy.” And while it may be almost a cliche, it seems patently true, at least to me, that the up-hill-to-and-from-school-bothways complaints of our elders pales in comparison to what young people today face when it comes to cyberbullying. The latest school board concern about the smartphone app Yik Yak, which allows users to anonymously post comments seen by others geographically nearby, shows just how tough things can be for kids today. The old-school passing of notes, scrawling on bathroom walls or whispering among the “cool kids,” has nothing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Yik Yak and whatever is coming next. The speed at which kids can attack and pile on using social media is staggering, and can be traumatizing. The anxiety some kids face on a daily basis in the halls at school should not be overlooked.

HENDERSON @peejayaitch Back when I was in high school, I faced the odd case of bullying the old fashioned way: getting stuffed in a locker or, you know, being forced to direct traffic while standing in a garbage can in the cafeteria on Frosh Day. The only thing akin to cyberbullying I ever faced was at university when my business school-attending housemate and his fellow students made fun of me and the Commodore 64 I was using to write philosophy essays on. I do have a vivid memory of one physical incident from high school, probably Grade 9 or 10: A muscular linebacker (or something) for our successful football team, Pete West, was picking on me (again) and had me up against the lockers with my arm twisted behind my back. Nothing new. But this time he tweaked my arm in such a way that I cringed in pain, he let go, and I turned

around and punched him with all my force in the stomach. The result was a little like a housefly hitting a windshield. He barely flinched. With tears in my eyes, the absurdity of the situation hit both of us and we started laughing. That outcome is likely why I remember it and, maybe, means it doesn’t even count as real bullying. Physical bullying is rarely an issue we hear about anymore. What strikes me deeply in the current conversations about cyberbullying is just how quickly mental damage can be done. I suspect 30 seconds of attacks by peers on Yik Yak is much worse than 30 seconds of Pete West twisting my arm behind my back. And I’m drawn to Dan Savage’s anti-homophobic “It Gets Better Project,” meant to inspire hope in teens facing harassment. Leave aside the specific issues gay teens face, many (most?) teens face bullying or harassment of some kind. But what parents should remember, and is hard for young people to get beyond, is just how important those few years of high school seem. Teens need to be told that once they

get older, they will look back at just how insignificant those high school years are in terms of the maelstrom of social activity, both good and bad. It does get better. Those who do the most bullying will likely either look back with regret, or they’ll evolve into the thugs who frequent the halls of the Chilliwack Courthouse. We frequently say how tech savvy young people are, but those young people are learning all kinds of social skills at the same time. It’s all new, it’s all dangerous and parents need to stay attuned to what their kids are up to. Critical in all of this, I contend, is to continue to give kids affected by cyberbullying some perspective. You may be in high school, and right now it may be all you think about—it may seem like the whole world. But high school is just high school. ‘No regrets’ policy best for MLA

Funding education is a low priority

Editor: According to Statistics Canada, sometime in October the number of Canadians over the age of 65 exceeded the number of Canadians below the age of 16. From the concept that people tend to act in ways that benefit what they perceive to be in their best interests, the direction of social process will be their interests. From Ipsos polls, the prime interests of people over 65 are in order: health care, pensions and entitlements and security and policing. Education rates somewhere between fifth and seventh. This is paralleled by philanthropic donations. Most education donations are in large sums to post-secondary institutions. The emphasis on these other interests and the over 40-year separation from formal education for most people mean that funding for education, particularly at the elementary and secondary level, is of low priority. A good example of this concept is that at a recent premier’s conference, when the federal government announced increases in provincial transfer payments, all provinces talked of using the funds for health care. Most health care funding is used in the final two years of a person’s life, so this makes for a very high cost of dying at the expense of our future. Economics is the management of scarcity and we are choosing,

Efficacy is the process of bringing about the desired outcome. What tends to happen is that control of resources becomes concentrated in one set of decision-makers under the concept that it brings better outcomes because direct costs are easily monitored. They can then easily monitor the decline of the education system, but typically do little to help. The long-term issue is to increase the amount of funding for education in an environment that places little real importance on it. The short-term issue is to work against the transfer of process from the school districts to the Ministry of Education. There is little to gain by efficiencies at the moment. I doubt whether one million dollars of true savings can be found. This only constitutes one per cent of the present budget. A better approach may be the funding of much improved public transport for instance. Cost savings can then be found in reducing school bus costs. Mark Isaak Cultus Lake

Why limit thinking to the five senses? Editor: I want to thank Mr. Rasmussen for his contribution to the Faith Today column (Nov. 20), and I also want to thank the Times for being creative enough to allow for such a diversified pool of opinions. We live in a free society. This concept is worth defending. Every citizen should have the right to believe, practice, and discuss their beliefs. We should also have the freedom, to defend, and criticize any idea, religious or not. Robust debate is a wonderful tool that, when done respectively, can usher humanity towards noble and virtuous living. The subjects of spirituality, morality, and origin are some

of the most noble philosophical pursuits one can ever venture on. I have great respect for Mr. Rasmussen and I am hoping to hear more from him and other freethinkers in the future, however, I would like to offer a couple criticisms for argument’s sake. In the article, you alluded to the concept of transcendence. Example: Nature as being sacred. Or Nature as being, a gift. Perhaps I missed the point of your usage of these terms, but to me, sacred is a loaded word, implying that creation, or self-existing nature, is somehow special? Why is it special? And, therefore, why do you describe it as a gift? From whom or from whence did the gift come from? I want to point out the irony in using the romantic idea of transcendence, while denying the possible reality of transcendence. My second challenge has to do with the popular title many have used to describe themselves as, Freethinkers. I understand the implications of being free from man-made dogmas, and “churchodoxy,” and the liberation that comes from not having to conform to any ideology. But what, exactly are you free from, when you intellectually divorce yourself from anything supernatural, pseudo-scientific or religious? There are billions of people on our planet who have such beliefs in a god, or gods, the afterlife, morality, origins of the human soul, etc. These are the areas of true free thought and philosophy that allow us to really dig deep into the possibilities of origin, morality, and destiny. After all, every human, in some way is asking these questions deep down inside: Where did I come from? Why am I here? And where am I going? To say you are a free thinker, and then limit your thinking to only what your five senses, and the academy of scientific experts gives you permission to think, doesn’t sound very free to me. I couldn’t think of a better example of a narrow-minded worldview than that. Perhaps it’s really just old fashioned existentialism in disguise. To cast off the slavery of “religious conviction” I wonder if you actually just exchange it for a new, and more sinister and more abject type of slavery, the slavery to one’s own thoughts and passions. By attempting to jettison all the wonderful, awe-inspiring possibilities of the supernatural, and the rich, diverse sea of spiritual thought that culture and history has presented us with, and choosing to only believe what comes down from the Ivory Tower of the Academy sounds a lot like the dark ages to me. Maybe some of our new “freethinkers” are just like every other non-conformist. Rev. Darrell Lahay Chilliwack

Editor: I would encourage Mr. Cheney (Letter in the Nov. 20 Chilliwack Times) to read my speech referring to global warming. There I don’t deny the possibility that the globe is warming and I’m willing to be convinced by the science, but as Mr. Cheney admits, scientists are still arguing about it. Because the science is not settled I remain a skeptic. The good news is that the direction of temperature change will become clear over time. The need for action will become obvious, or the movement will fizzle out on its own. In the meantime, I recommend a ‘no regrets’ policy that focuses on clean air. Public policies should reduce greenhouse gases and pollution at the same time, so if global warming doesn’t turn out to be real, we will still have cleaner air— and no regrets about the money we spent to get there. Make the time to ask what you can do for others BY GRAHAM MCMAHON Church of the Nazarene

M

ark 10:46-52 tells the story about a blind man named Bartimaeus. In the Ancient Near East, there was no system to provide for the needs of the disabled, and so the only way to survive was to sit by the roadside at the gates of a city and beg. Bartimaeus was a blind beggar. That is who he was. That was his whole life. Day in and day out, for probably most of his years, Bartimaeus would have sat by the side of the road listening to people pass him by, totally dependent on their charity to provide him with what he needed to

make it through another day. That would be a tough way to live. On one particular day, as Bartimaeus sat by the roadside outside Jericho doing what he had always done, he heard a large crowd approaching. When he asked what the commotion was all about, he was informed that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. Bartimaeus had heard about this Jesus of Nazareth, and from the stories of his powerful teaching and miracles, he knew in his heart that this Jesus was the Messiah, the Anointed One of God. A spark of hope sprang up inside of Bartimaeus. Mark says he shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Several

in the crowd told him to be quiet, perhaps thinking, “Why would Jesus have time for a blind beggar?” But Mark says, “he cried out even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’” There was no stopping the hope and longing of Bartimaeus. Jesus heard his cries and stopped dead in his tracks, halting everyone around him. He called for Bartimaeus to be brought to him. Bartimaeus leapt to his feet and went to Jesus, and then Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” I always find this question curious. Isn’t it obvious? He was blind; he wanted to see again! Why ask? Yet, I think there is something powerful about this question. For Bartimaeus,

his life consisted of being passed by everyday by people who never asked what they could do for him: they either dropped a few alms in front of him or ignored him altogether. Yet here was Jesus stopping an entire crowd to ask Bartimaeus what he wanted Jesus, the Son of God, to do for him! Not only did this demonstrate compassion, it demonstrated the restoration of dignity. Bartimaeus gave voice to his deepest longing: “My teacher, let me see again.” Jesus commended Bartimaeus for his trust in him, healed him immediately, and Bartimaeus followed Jesus as he went on his way. It was brought up in the recent election and in several conversations

with neighbours that the municipal government can only do so much to make Chilliwack a better city to live in. Ultimately, it will be up to the citizens to choose to be good neighbours to one another to really see the best kind of change. I think this starts with treating those we meet in our day-to-day lives in Chilliwack the way Jesus treated Bartimaeus: with compassion and dignity. Weary Chiefs finding ways to win, back atop standings New goalie David Poirier gets first home victory

wo close wins finished a threegame weekend for the Chilliwack Chiefs, earning them top spot in the BCHL Mainland division above Prince George. The Chiefs travelled to Coquitlam Friday for a 3-1 loss but took both home game Saturday and Sunday against the Coquitlam Express (2-1) and the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (3-2). It was the second consecutive week the tired team had a four-game stint within five days. At Friday’s loss in Coquitlam, the Chiefs outshot the Express 34-30, but just couldn’t find the home net. “We had our chances to score that game and the other goaltender played very well,” said head coach Jason Tatarnic. “We made a couple of mistakes and they made us pay

Defender Brandon Tkachuk left the game early, still feeling the effects of a head injury he sustained last week on the team’s island/coast

road tour. His departure meant the ailing Chiefs defensive line was once again down to four players for the weekend. But the following night, back at Prospera Centre, Jordan Kawaguchi scored the game’s first two goals,

earning himself first star and the Chiefs a win. Coquitlam finished the period with a tally but the final two frames remained scoreless, notching up the victory for Chilliwack. “I thought the third period we played really smart, played very well defensively,” said Tatarnic. “It was nice to see that our guys were mentally strong.” The Chiefs’ new goalie David Poirier got a home win for his first appearance on the team, saving all but one of the 21 shots on his net. “He got out here Wednesday,” said coach Tatarnic. It’s not an easy situation to come into and I thought he handled himself pretty well.” In a back-and-forth Sunday home match, defender Evan MacEachern scored the first goal of the night (his second of the season) early in the second period. The Silverbacks answered immediately and then again in the same frame, pulling ahead 2-1. “You could tell they were a team that had lost two games already on the road and you could tell they wanted to get a win,” said Tatarnic.

“So when we went into second intermission we talked as a team, ‘We have an opportunity to attain first place in our division and we have 20 minutes . . . go give everything you have to achieve that goal.’” Early in the last period, Tipper Higgins and Kawaguchi did just that, scoring the tying and winning goals of the game respectively. That win means Chilliwack will be defending the division lead this weekend as they head into a twogame Surrey series, away on Friday and back home Saturday. As far as the health of Chiefs defenders going into Surrey: “We have four regulars that are good to go and three that are out, so we’ll see what this week brings us,” said Tatarnic.

he Chiefs and Surrey Eagles renew acquaintances this weekend with an entertaining home and home set. The clash begins Friday at the Eagles Nest, finishing Saturday night at Prospera Centre at 7 p.m. The two rivals have not seen each other since the opening weekend of the BCHL regular season. Chilliwack swept the pair of games with scores of 2-1 (overtime) and 6-2. Surrey made a major transaction earlier this week moving 20-year-old power forward Chase McMurphy to the AJHL’s Calgary Canucks, in return for a pair of 19-year-old defencemen, Owen Johnson and Jor-

On a more solemn note, it’s been a very sad week for hockey fans everywhere, our Chiefs’ family notwithstanding. Classy, respectful, hard working, honest, genuine, humble, a presence—these are only a few of the complimentary words that describe Pat Quinn. Pat was a big part of the launch of Prospera Centre in fall of 2004. He was not only

part owner of the building, he was the first one to ever skate on that shiny, new ice. But, like every memorable moment in history, this moment too is accompanied by an anecdote. It was the day of the news conference to unveil the fresh new on-ice Chiefs logo, and Quinn was in the Chiefs dressing room with fellow owners Moray Keith, Jim Bond and head coach, Harvey Smyl. Everyone had waited a long time for the ice to be in the building and the excitement was palpable. While going over the logistics of this very special inaugural skate, it came to light that one small detail had been overlooked—Pat Quinn did not

bring his skates! For any of you that have had the privilege of shaking this Irishman’s very large hand, you can understand the magnitutude of this plight. No one in the building was able to lend skates to the owner of size 13 feet! It was only 30 minutes prior to start time when assistant coach Dean Kletzel was tasked with solving this dilemma. Kletz got me involved, and while the Chiefs brass continued to merrily chat among themselves—as we had assured them with feigned confidence that we would absolutely solve this predicament—Kletz and I went into full blown “What do we do now?” mode.

Cue trainer Cam Janzen. In typical Chiefs hockey style, he did not panic. He picked up the phone like a seasoned telemarketer and found a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy—15 minutes later, having found what we were so desperately looking for in the back room of Cheam Sports, we were handing one of the greatest NHL coaches his skates to lace up. And the rest, as they say, is history. Pat Quinn will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and those who watched his career from afar span over four decades. There will be a video tribute to Pat Quinn prior to our puck drop at this Saturday’s game.

he 20th Annual Business Excellence Awards is only seven weeks away. Our theme this year is “The Roaring Twenties Gala” and we encourage all our guests to come dressed in their best 1920s attire. Formal attire will also be acceptable (just not as fun). This prestigious event will be held on Jan. 31, 2015 at Tzeachten Hall. The evening will begin at

5 p.m. with our BEST of B.C. reception. Representatives from local B.C. wineries will showcase their vintages; and to pair with your wine, there will also be fabulous hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants. All this will be followed by a delicious buffet-style dinner, catered by the Best Western Rainbow Country Inn. Parade gets earlier start

t’s not really the Christmas season until the annual parade rolls through downtown Chilliwack. And on Dec. 6, the Rotary Christmas Parade will make it Chilliwack’s brightest night of the year. Boys and girls of all ages will find the true community spirit as the Rotary clubs in Chilliwack partner with the City of Chilliwack to present the annual parade. “The Rotary clubs are so excited to be producing the Chilliwack Christmas Parade again this year,” said parade co-ordinator Sharon Dueck. “We listened to public feedback and have changed the parade start-time to 5:30 p.m. to better accommodate families with small children.” Keeping families in

mind, the parade will be live-streaming on the event website www.chilliwackchristmasparade. com. “This means that relatives from out-of-town can watch their loved ones go by on their parade float just as if they were present on the parade route,” Dueck said. Festivities will begin at 1 p.m at Five Corners Park and the nearby streets of downtown Chilliwack. An outdoor market with food trucks will be adjacent to an entertainment stage featuring performances by local musicians Matt Lowen, Trevor McDonald and Todd Richard. In the latest concert in the Chilliwack Cultural Centre’s Classical Series, Sarah Hagen and Anne Grimm bring a rich repertoire to the stage in an intimate morning concert. Audiences will sit back with a complimentary tea or coffee and fresh pastries from Sardis Bakery to enjoy the similarly perfect pairing of Hagen’s stunning piano and Grimm’s dazzling soprano vocals. “I think having everyone relaxing with their coffee around tables helps create a more intimate atmosphere,” Hagen says. “We really feed off this,

and play our hearts out—and I think the exchange between artists and audience in the Chilliwack setting becomes really magical.” Hagen is part of four classical morning concerts this season, including three duets and one solo performance. he Chilliwack Metropolitan Orchestra (CMO) will perform its annual Celebration of Christmas Concert at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre Dec. 20. This year’s theme will be The Music of Christmas through the Ages - from Renaissance to Rock. The orchestra will host a number of diverse musicians and thespians for this special concert. Members of The Chilliwack Players Guild will be on hand in the lobby in period costumes singing and entertaining concert goers before the concert program begins. The CMO has chosen beloved Christmas music from the 15th Century Renaissance period to the early 21st Century. Guest soprano, Sinead White, will join the orchestra for favourites from Mozart, Handel and pieces both earlier and later in composition. White joins us from Montreal where she has graduated with her masters degree in vocal performance from McGill University. Paula Quick, well known Chilliwack vocal teacher, soprano and artistic director of the Chilliwack

Women’s Chorus, will lead her singers in music from France and Spain from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The CMO will be accompanying the chorus for the first time for these carols orchestrated by Quick. To honour Christmas during Canada’s years at war, Jack Kopstein, local musician, military historian and writer, has written the CMO a special arrangement to showcase the wonderful brass players. The mellow sounds of the CMO brass will bring back poignant memories for those in the audience who were young during the ’40s. Christmas music composition was going strong in the ’50s and ’60s and favourites of that era will be performed by the orchestra. “Sleigh Ride,” “The Christmas Song” and other favourites will be easily recognized by everyone.

The ’70s and onward, while not so prolific, has some very memorable Christmas music. Kevin Davey, local music therapist and musician with the Fab Forever will make an appearance as a ghost from Christmas past to sing a special arrangement by Blake Mackay, orchestrator for the Fab Forever. To end the concert program with the 21st century, a rocking version of the Trans Siberian Orchestra’s transcription of “Christmas Eve in Sarajevo” will showcase CMO concert master Rick Barker on his electric violin. ◗ The Celebration of Christmas Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and has something for everyone. Good food, prizes, and fiddling like no one else can,” De Montigny said. “We’ve known Mairi Rankin ever since we met her in fiddling camp four years ago. When we heard she was planning to stay for good, we nabbed her as a fiddling teacher

and the rest is history.” The afternoon is designed to be a fundraiser for the Third World Eye Care Society, a group of eye specialists who travel to third world countries delivering thousands of pairs of used eyeglasses and performing surgery for free. De Montigny will donate half of all her proceeds and Rankin and Ritter will donate $5 from every CD sold.

wall, you went to a different washroom,” says social media consultant Jesse Miller. “Now it’s harder because it’s on the Internet and these kids live in a 24-hour world where everything happens any time of the day.” Miller spoke at G.W. Graham secondary about online platforms like Facebook and Instagram last week—coincidentally when the Yik Yak app started popping up on phones throughout the local student body. Chilliwack secondary school (CSS) students estimate that between 75 to 90 per cent of their peers have and use the app (but fewer than half actually post messages). In reaction to the spread of the app, the Chilliwack school board scrambled last Thursday to intervene and be proactive, according to superintendent Evelyn Novak. Parents were informed about the app, and the various schools were asked to talk to their students about the impact of social media. “We’re asking [parents] to work with us on this, and in a positive way model what good use of social media might look like,” says Novak. Through classroom discussions, the board is encouraging Chilliwack’s middle and secondary schools to address concerns about apps like Yik Yak, and in particular how posts on social platforms can impact their future. “We’re recommending that they use it wisely and carefully,” says Novak. The individual schools have also filed requests from Yik Yak to install “geofences” around their grounds. Because users see messages within a 2.4kilometre radius, the app depends heavily on location tracking technology. If it detects a user is located inside a geofenced area, Yik Yak will refuse them service displaying the message, “You appear to be using this too close to a school. Yik Yak is for adults only.” The whole idea of slicing chunks out of their serviceable area was necessary damage control for the founders of the app after bullying went rampant around Chicago and other regions of the U.S. Now over 85 per cent of the schools in America are geofenced, with more being zoned out all the time. At the time of publication, Chilliwack’s secondary schools were still not mapped out in Yik Yak’s database of blocked territories. While he waits for the

Many students are disappointed in their peers for being disruptive on Yik Yak, ruining the potential for a greater use of the app. Users have the power to downvote a post they don’t like. After five nays, the post disappears (two if there’s exceptionally egregious language). “[We] just encourage students to be responsible, and if they see something that’s inappropriate . . . flag it and it’s gone,” says Jones. “And they can look after each other that way.” However there is also the ability to upvote and many posts with positive ratings in double-digits would be deemed by most as unsuitable.

Imperfect self-policing might have to be satisfactory enough until the geofence is established. “While [the Yik Yak posts] were what I would call inappropriate, we didn’t see any that were threatening . . . harassing . . . bullying,” says Jones. Causing serious problems At the same time the anonymous app went viral in Chilliwack last week, California schools had more serious problems with the social networking service. Mira Costa high school near Los Angeles cancelled classes for three days after a vague threat was issued on Yik Yak. And San Diego’s Torrey Pines high school was put on lockdown last week as a result of a similar Yak. These and similar incidents in the U.S. have shown that the app’s promised anonymity is a myth. Yik Yak will work with law enforcement agencies

and courts to identify those responsible for sending out Yaks that cross the lines of legality. University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) media and communications instructor Darren Blakeborough says what makes people behave badly on the Internet is known as the disinhibition effect. “It’s that idea that if you’re looking someone in the face you either don’t say something negative to them, or if you do you see their reaction and hopefully you have a human response of empathy,” says Blakeborough. “But when there’s distance and you have no correlation or link with that person it’s much easier to say horrible things.” But the difference between the old way of talking behind someone’s back and today’s version, according to Blakeborough: “They’re now in a mediated kind of environment where they’re saying

it but thousands of people are reading and hearing it.” If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the Internet by this point, he says, it’s that there’s always going to be a small group of trolls who get pleasure out of disrupting the conversation. And there will always be another app to replace the last one. So the focus should be placed on guiding this teenage generation that’s only slightly older than Facebook. Parents need to understand what it means to

raise a digitally literate child according to consultant Jesse Miller. He adds that becoming a digital citizen means communicating on these new tools with the betterment of people in mind. “If you’re handing your child an iPad to distract them, to pacify them at a young age, that behaviour is going to follow them into primary school and into middle school and into secondary,” says Miller. “And the idea that they have to be connected to a device becomes a very

large concern for a lot of educators because it becomes hard for them to put the device down.” While we race to keep up with the fast-moving digital arena, the real-world consequences of virtual abuse remain tangible. “We’ve had incidents over the past number of years on an individual basis in many of our schools around students’ misuse of social media,” says Novak. “Those are dealt with through our student code of conduct as we would any other types of behaviour.” That might give teen users something to consider before their next Yak.

Passed away on November 21, 2014, in Chilliwack, BC at the age of 81. She was born at home on August 10, 1933 in Hamilton, Ontario, one of 8 children. Margaret is survived by children James (Anne), George, grandchildren Aaron (Dawn), Nathan (Kristie) and greatgrandchildren Alexander, Bethany-Anne, Emily, Hannah, Victoria, Isaiah, Luke, Faith, Hudson, Benton, and many others. She is predeceased by her parents, two sisters, four brothers, two daughters, and granddaughter Elizabeth. Margaret loved Jesus with all her heart. Always ready with a warm smile, she freely gave of her love and anything she had with anyone in need. Margaret was greatly loved and she will be sadly missed. A celebration of life will be held at First Avenue Christian Assembly in the Chapel Fri Nov 28 at 1pm 46510 First Ave. In lieu of flowers a donation to Hungry For Life (hungryforlife.org / 604-703-0223) would be appreciated.

Fire Fighter’s Food Drive

City of Chilliwack Fire Fighters will be going door to door in our community to collect food for the Salvation Army Food Bank on Monday, December 1 from 6 – 8pm. This is the 15th year they have participated in the food drive and each year the community helps them exceed the previous year’s total. During a snowfall event, we request that residents assist City crews’ efforts by removing vehicles from the street and keeping drains clear. The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions, therefore the travelling public is requested to use caution and ensure you have proper tires for the weather.
