he doorbell rang and a distraught young man said his parents from a few doors down were just in a bad car accident. Given his was a gated community, and it was before 7 a.m., Betty (who doesn’t want her real name used) believed him. The man—who went by Jerry— said he was housesitting for his parents, he didn’t have a car and he needed a lift to the hospital. Jerry told Betty he lived in unit number 11. “I said, ‘Do you mean Dean and Carol?’ and he said, ‘Yes, I am their son.’” So began a series of convincing

One lie after another Jerry got lucky with this victim, but he also had just enough answers and back story planned out to be convincing. Betty told the young man that she was off to the hospital anyway to visit her husband. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed and was only wearing a T-shirt.
The conversation on the drive was normal. Betty asked how badly his parents were hurt. “He said ‘I think Dad has a broken arm. They got T-boned and the door is caved in.’” Jerry convinced Betty he needed to go to a compound to get his parents’ wallets out of the car. The only confusing part of his story—at least in hindsight—for Betty was that he said he needed $370 to get the vehicle out of compound. { See SCAM, page A21}

No poultry farms in the U.S. were impacted by Wednesday, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported Tuesday that the H5N2 strain found in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and now Langley has been detected in northern pintail ducks in Lynden, Wash., fewer than 15 kilometres from the Fraser Valley cluster. “The finding in Whatcom County was quickly reported and identified due to increased surveillance for avian influenza in light of the [highly pathogenic] H5N2 avian influenza affecting commercial poultry in British Columbia, Canada,” said a USDA statement issued Dec. 16. In addition, a highly pathogenic H5N8 strain was found in Washington in three captive falcons that were fed hunter-killed wild birds. Teen victim alleges sex assault at Gill Bar he victim of an alleged sexual assault that happened on a Chilliwack camping trip three years ago faced hard questions from the lawyer for the man accused of the attack in BC Supreme Court on Monday. The 46-year-old Abbotsford man’s trial for sexual assault and sexual interference of a child under 16 began Monday and was scheduled to wrap up Wednesday. Gilles Robert Leger is accused of the assault on a 15-year-old girl while camping at Gill Bar on the Fraser River in Chilliwack on Oct. 1, 2011. A video of the victim’s statement to police on Oct. 2, 2011 was played in court, and the now 18-year-old was on the stand as a Crown witness. She cannot be named due to a publication ban, and some details of the trial that could identify her cannot be printed. The alleged incident happened at the unofficial but popular camping area at the gravel bar at the end of Gill Road. Leger offered to take the victim on a ride on his side-by-side ATV, the young woman testified. Leger, the girl and some of her friends had been drinking alcohol the older man had purchased. The young woman said in BC Supreme Court in Chilliwack that Leger took her for a ride about 10 minutes away from the campsite, and then forced himself upon her at the back of the ATV. “I kept telling him ‘No,’” she said on

n a collaborative effort with Salvation Army outreach workers, the City of Chilliwack removed a small camp that had been established next to Chilliwack Creek on a trail behind the old University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) campus last Thursday. Two homeless people had set up tents two months earlier and were then joined by more campers last month, according to one of the residents Erik Christiansen. While Christiansen isn’t happy about being moved, he said this instance was different from prior evictions. “The city was polite, they were respectful,” he said. “They gave us time.” Christiansen and the group were

Michaels also pressed her about why if, as she claimed, Leger had sex with her against her will vaginally and anally, that she consented to a vaginal exam at the hospital but not an anal exam. He asked her if it was possible she didn’t want the exam because it didn’t happen. “It was just too much for a 15-year-old,”

she answered. Michaels also questioned claims the girl made about memories “popping” into her mind weeks after the alleged attack. The court heard that she had entered one such detail into the notes function on a Blackberry, something she said she later deleted. When asked to produce the phone so that an expert could find the note, she refused. “Because it didn’t happen,” Michaels suggested. “Yes it did,” she responded. “I’m suggesting that you were caught in a lie and you knew it,” Michaels said. “Agree or disagree?” “Disagree,” she said. The alleged victim’s friend was on the stand Tuesday morning, and police officers and a witness from the campsite were on the stand Wednesday.

Banning booze ship shape idea

he presence of cheap or free alcohol on Royal Canadian Navy ships is a tradition that goes back generations. It can likely be traced back to when the captains of sailing ships heading out for long voyages to new lands felt it prudent to carry rum on board to give crew members something to look forward to during long stretches at sea, and to keep them from going stir crazy. While ships and personnel in today’s navy still spend extended times at sea away from home and family, the need for a loose liquor policy on board is a vestige from the past that has long outlived its pragmatic need. There will no doubt be crew members who will grumble about the move announced by the RCN last week to ban self-serve drinking while its ships are at sea or in port. But it makes sense, since these ships are workplaces 24/7, with crew on duty at all times. The change was one of a variety of recommendations stemming from an Internal Review of Personal Conduct, launched after shorebound charges relating to drunken misconduct were lodged against three members of HMCS Whitehorse on exercise in San Diego this past summer. Among the review’s findings was that clearer guidance on the RCN’s expectations for personal conduct needs to be communicated to officers and sailors. A prime minister letting EI and CPP hikes flow, And all those payroll taxes causing good jobs to go; Reid and Kwan apologizing through gritted teeth, All because they got caught spending beyond belief; Governments and Crown CEOs, to the bar they belly,

Angels do exist . . . here at Chilliwack General Hospital Editor: As I write this letter, I am patient in Chilliwack General Hospital. I’m 49 and a mother of three grown children. I am a business woman in the community. On Nov. 25, I was admitted into Chilliwack General Hospital by ambulance and treated with the symptoms of spinal meningitis. Within a day I was sent by ambulance to Abbotsford ICU and placed on a respirator and feeding tubes to help me survive. I was in a sleepinduced coma for 48 hours. Due to swelling in my brain, and infection in my spine, I was totally paralyzed from the armpits down. I was brought back to Chilliwack to recoup and have been here for another two weeks. I could not wiggle a toe. Then I began to “unfreeze” and had to learn to walk again. This is was one of the most terrifying experiences one may ever imagine for themselves or a loved one to go through. However, I have a wonderful story. From the nurses, physiotherapy, doctors, ambulance drivers, care aids, housekeeping, kitchen staff and on, I have been surrounded by angels. Every single experience I have encountered with these fine, beautiful people has been extraordinary. From the kindness in their voices, the sympathy in the eyes and the love in their touch, I am overwhelmed with love. I see them helping others, selfishly and thanklessly. I am so thankful for having people like this in my community. I want to shout it from the highest mountain— thank you, thank you! We have an amazing hospital filled with bright lights of hope and encouragement. God loves us so much through these wonderful people. This is going to be the best Christmas I have ever had. I am being released today. I get to walk out of here with a walker—but thank God I can walk. They are calling me a miracle. Thank you Chilliwack General Hospital. I love you all—you are my angels. Kiwanis, Chilliwack Foundation amaze Editor: I just wanted to say a huge thank you to two groups in Chilliwack who continue to go above and beyond to make sure Chilliwack is a great place for families. Sardis Kiwanis has been providing the funds so that we can send each family who attends Sardis DoorWay home with milk each week. This milk helps to ensure that these children grow up healthy and strong. The Chilliwack Foundation provided the funds so that we were able to replace two very old freezers for our program. These freezers are essential in storing meat hampers and for the kitchen to use for breakfast and lunch supplies. Emporium needs to be better supported Editor: Re: Acoustic Emporium. I’m writing this article the morning after attending another amazing live show at the Acoustic Emporium. First, I would like to thank the two local papers for doing their part by spreading the word about the Emporium. Everyone that is behind this project does it for the love of music. As citizens of Chilliwack, we are very fortunate to have this venue. The only other place providing this type of entertainment outside of Vancouver is the Streaming Cafe in Kelowna. In conversations I have had with people about the Emporium, there appears to be an uncertainty about the type of music being played. If you enjoy listening to Monsters and Men, Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers, then you will like the music being played at the Emporium. These talented bands made up of young singer songwriters are at the point in their lives where music is everything, and it shows in their performances. For example, the next band scheduled to play Jan. 16, 2015 is Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk, who were the winners of a competition this year put on by CBC Radio, in which more than 2,000 bands entered. Local MLA shows a lot of courage Editor: The letter by Thomas Cheney criticizing our local MLA, Laurie Throness, for his views on climate change was not only in poor taste but it was fundamentally wrong. The letter did, however, reinforce my respect for Mr. Throness who first of all did his research and secondly had the courage to state his honest opinion in the face of a lot of questionable political correctness. No one says that the climate is not changing. It always has and it probably always will. Similarly there is no argument that man has had an influence on climate. At issue is how much change is really taking place. What can we realistically do about it?
How much are we prepared to spend attempting to do something that may be impossible? Mr. Cheney indicates he is pursuing a master’s degree in climate policy. Policy is more of a political issue than a scientific one. Most people are well aware of how much bad public policy we have that is based more on political ideology than on a good scientific foundation. Perhaps Mr. Cheney should reflect on a quote by George Will, a Pulitzer prize winning journalist and author, who said, “When a politician says the debate is over, you can be sure of two things: the debate is raging and he is losing it.” My vote goes to Laurie Throness, MLA for Chilliwack–Hope. In closing, I am perplexed as to the timing of this poorly written article in the Chilliwack Times. It is Christmas. We are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the most important figure in human history. This article is full of unfounded, empty and downright academically dishonest assertions that lower the credibility of the newspaper. I doubt that the Chilliwack Times would print an article denying the existence of Mohammed, to be published during Ramadan? Darrell Furgason Chilliwack
Editor: In response to A. Murphy’s article of Dec. 4 entitled “Merry __mas?” I would like to suggest that the author has certainly not had an “open mind” in reference to Jesus Christ, but has clearly revealed the source of his “freethinking” doctrine by identifying himself at the end of the article as a “deconverted” (i.e. ex-Christian), agnostic-atheist. Given those philosophical and theological commitments, it is little surprise, then, that he rejects the historicity of Jesus by asserting that there is no secular evidence to support Jesus’ existence, claims that the disciples’ accounts contradicted each other, and that Christianity might be a total “myth.” So, should we all become “freethinkers” like him . . . because he knows what he is talking about? Hardly. One astounding contradiction in Murphy’s writing occurs early on when he raises the question, “what if Jesus never even existed?” and then proceeds to answer it later by stating that “there are many, many books written about Jesus. Many of them historical documents dating back to the 1st Century.” He should make up his mind right here; Jesus existed. According to F.F. Bruce, professor of Biblical criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester, “The historicity of Christ is as axiomatic for an unbiased historian as the historicity of Julius Caesar. It is not historians who propagate the “Christ-myth theories.” Otto Betz concludes the obvious, “No serious scholar has ever ventured to postulate the non-historicity of Jesus.” (What Do We Know About Jesus, SCM Press 1968) To make it plain, Murphy would have to deny the existence of Julius Caesar and Pontius Pilate (who ordered Jesus to be crucified) to deny the existence of Jesus. As to Murphy’s absurd claim that there is no secular evidence for the existence of Jesus, Cornelius Tacitus (AD 55-120), called the “greatest historian” of ancient Rome, wrote of the crucifixion of Jesus in The Annals, which cover the period from AD 14 to AD 68. Writing of the reign of Nero, Tacitus states that Nero punished Christians with the “most exquisite tortures,” and their founder
gouged by the gas stations to the tune of eight cents per litre. I was in Vancouver on the Dec. 8 and the price of a litre of gas was only $1.159. Chilliwack prices on the same day were $1.069 per litre. Since there is a 17 cent per litre Translink fuel tax, the price in Chilliwack should have only been 98.9 cents. If Vancouver can lower their costs due to the declining price of oil why can’t the Chilliwack gas stations? I suggest that the residents of Chilliwack buy our gas in Abbotsford and further to go into the gas stations in Chilliwack and complain about the price. I am equally disturbed that neither of the two local papers doesn’t do articles on the price of gas in an attempt to get the gas stations to lower their prices. In the past, media took on the responsibility of keeping their readers informed and acting upon their behalf with various issues. Now the news media only appear to be interested in sound bites. Grateful for parks and trails system Editor: With so many prompts around that remind us to be grateful, this is an opportune time to focus our gratitude onto one of the great benefits of living in Chilliwack, the Promontory parks and trails. As residential development was happening in my community of Promontory Heights, city staff and developers partnered to deliver new parks and a network of trails. We now have an excellent trail system that enable you to walk/hike from the valley floor through our community and end up at a great view spot on Mt. Thom. Whether it is for pure exercise (very steep climbs and stairways), for a challenging hike to viewpoints, or just for a leisurely stroll through nature and along streams, people of all ages and fitness levels can be seen making good use of our local treasure. In the early stages of Promontory building development, two surveys were conducted by the residents
association to determine what was valued and should be preserved. The outcome was a Parks and Trails strategy that was developed in 1998 as a partnership project with Real Estate Foundation of B.C., the City, and UCFV. Now 16 years later we have come a long way to achieving the vision of having public spaces that “enhance community character, and contribute to livability of community.” By no means did we achieve all the possible options that were presented in the strategy. Certain identified opportunities for more parks and connecting trails have been missed. But in a number of cases more was achieved than planned. An example of this is the recently constructed new trail network on our cherished “Western Ridge.” So this is the season to pause during your walk along one of our Promontory trails and say a big thanks to the city staff and developers for their part in helping Promontory reach much of the original vision. Build it now for future energy use Editor: It’s unfortunate that we didn’t build the Site C dam back in the 1980s. It’s true that we didn’t need the power from Site C back then, but in retrospect it would have been a lot less expensive to build and we could have been selling the power for the past couple of decades and using the revenue to pay for the dam. Dams in this province have always been built before we actually needed the power. We routinely sold that extra power—clean power—to various states and provinces that needed it. The revenue helped keep BC Hydro rates down and the dam building process created jobs, good jobs. Plus, when we finally needed the extra power, it was there for us, ready and waiting. But instead of staying a step ahead of the game, and ahead of population growth, we’ve been buying power from outside the province to top up the supply of power our current dams are no longer able to supply. That seems completely contrary to the province’s time honoured tradition of keen foresight in energy matters and anticipating future energy needs. We will never recoup the missed energy revenue opportunities of the past, but we can learn from the experience and get ahead of the game once again. The need for power certainly isn’t going to get any less in the future. So let’s get ourselves back in gear and not miss out on the energy opportunities still to come. We need to build the Site C dam now because by the time it is built we will need every ounce of energy it can produce. James McCartney New Westminster

ope is something no one can live without. It gives us the reason to continue the journey of life, even when the road sometimes seems impossible to travel on. Hope enables us to dream for something better. But quite frequently our hope is like a beautiful vase that has been smashed to pieces. We look at the pieces on the floor and we wonder if we can collect them and glue them back together—even though the vase would never be the same again. Just in the last day or so our world has been shaken again with two senseless acts of terrorism. In Sydney, Aust. a gunman walked into a chocolate cafe and held people hostage. It ended 16 hours later with him and two hostages dead. In Pakistan
He is still the only hope for the world 141 people were killed at a school of whom 132 were children. There are so many other things we can mention that would cause hearts to tremble with fear and despair. The question on the lips of thousands of people over time has been, “How can I find hope?” God has answered that question on the night when His Son was born in Bethlehem of Judea. There was an angel who appeared to shepherds on the open fields with a message of great joy about the Messiah who had come. His message was a message of hope. For hundreds of years God’s people waited for the promise of the Messiah. They waited for their hope. And they found it in the Baby Jesus.
When Jesus was presented at the temple after His birth, it was Simeon, a man of advanced age who said, “Sovereign Lord, as You have promised, You may now dismiss Your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel,” Luke 2: 29-32. When we hear talk among people about finding hope, the message that we have to share is: “Make sure that you know in Who your hope is.” After more than 2,000 years since Jesus came into our world, He is still the only hope this world can ever dream about. When someone says on a sick bed, “I hope for a better tomorrow”,
the answer is “He is here; His Name is Jesus.” Placing our hope in Jesus, who is our anchor, does not mean that the storms of life will not come. It just means that He has the power to provide peace in the midst of them. That was the testimony of a young father with six children I met just after Christmas of 1989. He lost his wife a week before Christmas and was left to raise those young children by himself. I tried to express my deepest sympathy to him on the loss of his wife, but he interrupted me when words didn’t come as I wanted them to come. He said, “I thank God for the hope He gave me, when His Son was born.” The expression of peace and hope in his eyes was something I will

In a few days we will again celebrate celebrate Christmas, and unlike many people, for whom Christmas will be a time to escape from fear and insecurity, for God’s children it will be the time to affirm for themselves “My Saviour came; He is the answer to any situation life might bring to me. He is my Hope.” May His presence change your life forever. May His coming give you and your family the sense of peace you need as you live with all the challenges life brings to you on a daily basis. One of Chilliwack’s most prolific offenders and car thieves was sentenced last week in Abbotsford court for being in possession of yet another stolen pickup truck. Shaun Darryl Bolko pleaded guilty and was handed a five-and-a-half month term in Sean Bolko jail for possession of stolen property and breach of probation in connection with a Dec. 2 incident. Bolko is alleged to have stolen a Ford F-350, the same make and model he was convicted of steal-

T
he Chilliwack Chiefs will head into the holidays with extra cheer and a fortified lead in their division after a successful three-game weekend that earned them two wins and ended with a dramatic tie—the team’s first of the season. Friday night at Prospera Centre the Chiefs hosted Coquitlam, winning 5-2 and then took to the road beating Trail Saturday (7-4) and tying the Vees in Penticton Sunday (1-1). “Our effort was there for sure—Friday, Saturday, Sunday,” said Jason Tatarnic, head coach. “I thought we worked extremely hard for the whole 190 minutes that we played.” In their last home game until the end of the December, Chilliwack took an early 2-0 lead in the first period against the Coquitlam Express with scoring from Kurt Black and Jake Hand. But the Express answered with 20 minutes of the same results to even up the scoreboard heading into second intermission. Then it was all Chiefs in the final frame with an Evan MacEachern goal and two from Brandon Potomak
for the 5-2 home team win. “That was a high-energy game, fast paced,” said Tatarnic. “You can tell the divisional games are a little bit more intense because those points are important to everyone.” With little rest, the team boarded a bus headed for the interior immediately after Friday night’s game. And in Trail the pattern was much the same with goal trading in the first period to leave things 2-2 after Mason Boh and Ryan Bowen put points up for Chilliwack on Saturday. The Chiefs took a one point edge in the next frame when Hand scored a power-play goal and Luke McColgan followed with his goal, followed by a Smoke Eaters reply. Seven minutes into the third period Trail tied the game at 4-4. But once again the Chiefs rallied in the final minutes to put three more in the Smoke Eaters net to win 7-4, thanks to McColgan’s second goal of the night and Potomak and Jake Larson contributions. Chilliwack was two for three on power plays, and the win was new goaltender David Poirier’s fifth of five total games. And Sunday saw an unusually low scoring game in Penticton, with both goalies nearly impenetrable. Hunter Miska of the Vees and Chilliwack’s Aidan Pelino were awarded first and second star respectively for stopping over 30 shots each in 70 minutes of play. Both goals of the game came in the first period from Chief Craig Puffer and Steen Cooper of Penticton. After two five-minute overtime periods, the score remained a 1-1 stalemate.

Prince George dropped to third on a three-game losing streak, and Langley climbs to second below the Chilliwack’s five-point lead in the
Mainland division. The Chiefs will take a break for the holidays and return to the Prospera Centre Dec. 28 to host the last-place Surrey Eagles. Tatarnic expects both Mark Esposito and Liam Ferguson to be healthy and in a full roster after the break.

G.W. Graham’s varsity boys basketball team won their first ever Grizzlies showcase tournament last weekend hosted by the school. GWG beat top 10 South Okanagan Secondary 81-74 in the championship game Saturday. They had to get through Kamloop’s Westsyde (72-42) first and Burnaby’s No. 4 ranked AAA team St. Thomas More (STM, 66-51) to get to the title game. Grizzly star for game one of the invitational tournament went to Ryan Trottier; their second match versus STM star was Jordon Breuker; and in the final game Mateo Urbano received the honour. Another GWG player Gabe Mannes was awarded with the tournament MVP recognition, while his teammates Trottier and Phil Weston took first and second team all-stars respectively. The Graham girls finished fifth overall in their tournament, beating Carson Graham solidly in the first round (74-29), but losing to STM in the semi-finals (79-61). A young team, the girls held their own losing in their consolation game by only four points to top-ten team Notre Dame to end their tournament. I
could go on a tirade on how family is an important thing for all of us and use the usual emotional swooning which colours every speech in a pro-family rant. From an evolutionary standpoint, family is simply the first mentor we come across when we are born, small, defenseless and fragile. If evolution hadn’t granted us the willingness to learn from our ancestors or the emotional attachment to protect the next generation; then surely Homo sapiens would have joined the long list of extinct species that have inhabited this world at one

The importance of family point or another. Long ago, natural selection favoured those of us who heeded the advice of older generations while those too foolish to do so were met with the swift efficiency of nature’s predators and traps. The problem with this evolutionary trait was that it also made new generations gullible and unquestioning of parental knowledge; that was a prime breeding ground for mythology and later on, religion to take root. Newer generations had no reason
to question the wisdom of their fore bearers, their collective knowledge had served them well in previous generations, and so religious myth and faith, under the disguise of acquired knowledge, permeated the next litter of humans. It wasn’t until science’s arrival that non-fact-based scriptural pseudo-knowledge AKA faith, began to be seriously challenged, and often at the peril of the inquisitioner. Now at the beginning of the 21st century, as the relentless march of scientific
discovery increases our knowledge and diminishes the power of god, we are left battling an age-old instinct that served us so well even today: the need to believe. This is where family becomes vital. Religion and its myths have clouded the reason why we evolved the need to believe in our family teachers. These early lessons were there to optimize survival chances of youth, in effect, increasing the odds of making it. Now we have better information
and explanations for everything thanks to science, but instead of providing better lessons to the next descendants, too many adults parents and teachers are failing youth by stubbornly holding on to the stories of the past. They keep the ghosts of the past and inhibit the progress of the specie by withholding the best factual information for the survival of their kids. Results: the kids are less knowledgable and prepared to take on the world. Is it really surprising that survey after survey finds that secular thinkers prone to science outclass their religious counterparts in several fields? { See FAITH TODAY, page A20 }

More active children means healthier kids
C
hilliwack doctors are trying to get kids moving. Currently just seven per cent of school-aged children are meeting the Canadian Guidelines of 60 minutes of fitness per day. Research strongly supports that children need an hour of active play daily to keep them hale, hearty and healthy. Encouraging this message of healthy living, the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice, in partnership with Doctors of BC, led the month-long Be Active Every Day Challenge for students at Central Second Day. The initiative helps kids become more active and make healthy choices. In partnership with Chilliwack Central Elementary Community School Society, local family doctor Dr. Alison Henry co-ordinated a month-long challenge to kids: Be active 60 minutes every day in November. Henry presented the challenge to the kids in the beginning of November. Along with the presentation, the kids watched a four-minute video, and played games to get going. Participants also received activity books and promotional items, like balls and bracelets, courtesy of Doctors of BC. Listening to the heartbeats through a stethoscope before and after exercise turned out to be a favourite of the kids. In advance of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, this year’s challenge cham-
pions were soccer stars Emily Zurrer and Brittany Baxter from the Canadian Women’s National Team. They helped motivate the kids to keep moving each week through a series of videos and a fun activity book. Katrina Bepple, Programs Lead at the Chilliwack Division has been engaging with Central Second Day since early 2013 to integrate the Healthy Kids Initiative’s Live 5-2-1-0 message and a health literacy component to the program. So far, sessions have included Live 5-2-10 presentations on what the message means and interactive games like “The Price is Right! Vegetables and Fruit” and “How Much Sugar is in that Drink?!”. Other topics have explored “Where Does Our Food Come From?”, where children learned what different seeds look like and where they are found. To wrap up, each child got a seedling tray to plant herbs to take home and grow. Central Second Day is an after school program which serves over 50 students in Grades 3 to 6, and provides opportunities for students to participate in formal arts, sports and recreational activities and to connect them with a caring community of support where they can thrive and interact in a positive way with their peers, siblings, and adults. Central Second Day has also previously participated in the 60 Minute Kids Club and is an enthusiastic advocate of such challenges.

WISDOM TEETH The average mouth is made to hold only 28 teeth. It can be painful when 32 teeth try to fit in a space that should hold only 28 teeth. These four other teeth are your third molars, also known as “wisdom teeth.” Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt within the mouth, usually by the age of 18. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, this does not generally happen.

She came back to the car, drove him to Wally’s Towing on Young Road but it was closed. Jerry said they should just go to the hospital and he asked her to drop him off nearby so he could borrow his dad’s friend’s car. “And he was gone,” she said. At the hospital, Betty went to use her cellphone and it, too, was gone. She searched everywhere, even drove back home but couldn’t find it. Then she returned to the hospital, visited with her husband and then went to visit Dean and Carol (not their real names). “They had not been seen or admitted,” Betty said. “I then realized I had been scammed. While I was sitting in my car at Safeway he had rifled through my purse and took my cellphone and $60 out of [my husband’s] wallet.” Far from alone Chilliwack RCMP think it’s at least “likely” that the same man who fooled Betty so completely is

As of Wednesday morning, the CFIA had reported 10 farms in the Fraser Valley affected by the current outbreak. Approximately 233,800 chickens and turkeys have either died from the illness or been euthanized. The first farm where avian flu was detected was a broiler breeder with 13,000 birds in Chilliwack, although no other farms in the city have been directly impacted by the outbreak. Eight of the other farms affected are in Abbotsford—three turkey and five broiler breeders. The latest and the largest is a 53,000 table egg layer farm in Langley. While the illness is not dangerous for people, and the outbreak is likely to have little or no impact on consumers, the industry is feeling the effects as a three-level disease control zone has been set up in the province. The Cascadia Wind Ensemble will perform at Minter Country Gardens store on Young Road Sunday, Dec. 21. The group, under the baton of Shannon Goldsmith, has been performing for three years and have received rave reviews from numerous musicians and audiences across the region. The musicians in the band are from many areas of the Fraser Valley. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie Arthur Snook. Leslie was born in Harrow, England and emigrated to the United States at the age of fourteen with his sister and twin brother. As a young man he moved to Canada where he met and married the love of his life, Barbara. They had two sons, David (Carey) and Robert, and a daughter Janice (Regan) and were together for 62 years. Later in life Leslie pursued his love of art. He was a gifted artist, creating many exceptional paintings. Thanks to the caring staff at Valleyhaven where Leslie resided for 5 months. No memorial service by request. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society in Leslie’s memory.

Public Functions are those which are open to the general public such as tournaments, special events and festivals. Public event functions must be pre-approved by the City. Successful applicants will receive a Special Occasion – Public Event Licence, which can be obtained from a BC Liquor Store after the City issues an approval letter to the host of the event.

Private Functions are events limited to family celebrations (such as weddings), organization membership and invited guests to whom advance tickets have been sold. These events are granted as a Special Occasion – Private Event Licence. Licences for private functions are obtained from the BC Liquor Stores.
If you plan to hold a Public Function in the City of Chilliwack, you will require the approval of the City of Chilliwack’s Committee to Approve Public Events (CAPE). The Committee to Approve Public Events (CAPE) is now inviting applications for Public Special Occasion Licences (Public Events Involving Alcohol) for events which will occur between January and June, 2015. Applications can be obtained from the Corporate Services Department of the City of Chilliwack or on line at chilliwack.com/ services/special occasion licences. All applications are to be submitted no later than January 7, 2015. Please ensure all requested documentation is included with your application.
