It’s the neighbourhood pub full of friendly faces and good beer. But the Jolly Miller Pub also has the best pub grub around, with wings, nachos, burgers and more. For fine food at pub price along with big-screen TVs, a heated patio and live entertainment, the Jolly Miller’s got it all. Other notable pub food faves are Major League 2 and Friendly Mikes.

For the freshest sushi rolls and variety to keep you wanting more, Hana Sushi is the best Japanese food in Chilliwack. But this city has a surprising number of good sushi places, with Seven Sushi and Vedder Sushi also offering a variety of gyoza and bento boxes for eat-in or take-out.

Winner: Sharon Gaetz Finalists: Clint Hames John Les

Winner: Paul Gumprich Paul Gumprich is the brigade fire chief at Hall #6, and has been voted the best firefighter in Chilliwack. This volunteer firefighter oversees the activities of 15 other volunteer firefighters at the Greendale Hall. And while this is not one of the most active halls in the Chilliwack fire department, its volunteers are obviously well-known and wellloved by Greendale residents. Gumprich has been a firefighter for approximately 20 years, both here and in Ontario, and he works hard to keep his Greendale community fire safe.

Our mayor Sharon Gaetz has been named the best mayor of all time in Chilliwack. She became the city’s first female mayor in December, 2008 and has overseen some large and small events in Chilliwack during her tenure including the opening of the new Chilliwack Cultural Centre, groundbreaking for a new affordable housing project and the opening of the Evans Road connector. Former mayors Clint Hames and John Les also top the list of best mayors of all time.

Winner: Chuck Strahl Finalists: Barry Penner Pat Clark

Winner: Lea-Anne Dunlop Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop has been voted the number one police officer in town. Her role is to keep the public informed on important community issues and she stays in constant touch with local media to ensure that Chilliwack residents know what’s taking place in our community. Before moving into this position in 2007, Dunlop was a youth officer. She has also been a mentor with the Fraser Valley Youth academy, as well as a D.A.R.E. officer. She’s been described by her peers as a dedicated officer who provides the highest quality of service to the community.

As the MP for the Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon riding as well as the Minister of Transportation, Chuck Strahl has gained the respect of his constituents and has been voted best local politician. A member of the Conservative party, Strahl has also served as the Indian Affairs and Northern Development minister and as Agriculture minister. He was first elected under the Reform Party banner in 1993. Other politicians given the nod of approval are Barry Penner and Pat Clark.

BEST VOLU NTEE R Winner: Walter Sussel Finalists: Clint Hames John Les Walter Sussel was speechless in learning he had been voted best volunteer of the year by Chilliwack readers. In recalling his volunteer experience, Sussel shares that he was a member of the Kinsmen club and the Fraser Rotary Club. In 2003 Chilliwack hosted the BC Senior Games and Sussel was director of medical services, and in 1997 Chilliwack hosted the BC Games for athletes with disabilities and Sussel volunteered to be in charge of health services. He has been an avid volunteer with the ElderCollege through the University of the Fraser Valley. This non-profit society has a goal of providing adults over the age of 50 with access to educational and learning opportunities. Sussel has volunteered with this college basically since its inception in 1999. He was a member of the administrative committee then last April became the chair of the ElderCollege Council. He is also a member of the Probus Club of Chilliwack.

Terry Fox might be the hero of Canada, but Betty Fox is definitely the hero of Chilliwack.

Winner: Craig Tolmie Finalists: Mark Habshield Of all the coaches of all the teams in all of Chilliwack, locals have voted Fusion Athletics coach Craig Tolmie as the best coach. Tolmie inspires cheerleaders to do their best and to be challenged. Fusion Athletics coaches kids from three to 18 years of age. This year, there are approximately 110 students in Fusion cheerleading squads. Tolmie has been coaching for the past six years, getting into the cheerleading scene after his daughter got involved. The Junior A hockey team, Chilliwack Chiefs, have been voted best Chilliwack team of all time, a favourite even though the team has since been moved to Langley. Laura Qualty has been voted as the best dance instructor in Chilliwack. Qualty has been belly dancing since 2002 and performs throughout the Fraser Valley. She is currently teaching a beginner’s and intermediate belly dancing class at the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre on Fridays from 6:45-7:45 p.m. Taking second place as Chilliwack’s best dance instructor is Aryn Savard, an owner / director and instructor at The Goddess Movement, a pole fitness studio.

Cultus Lake makes any time a good time for a picnic. The quiet of the lake most of the year, and the packed-tooverflowing crowds in summer always make for an interesting time to pack a lunch-on-the-go. Other good picnic spots include Bridal Falls and Central Park.

Chilliwack is full of history and heritage, and our past has been kept alive with some great buildings. The museum was voted best building in town, and it is indeed a beautiful building to be proud of with white columns and an arching stairway. The courthouse and Prospera Centre are also some of the best buildings around.

If you have lived in Chilliwack for any length of time, you know there are a few intersections that are best to avoid. At the top of the list is the dreaded busy intersection at Luckakuck and Vedder, though with both roads being main thoroughfares it’s not a shock that it’s always busy. Other intersections to avoid are the sometimes-confusing crossings at 5 Corners and the Evans Roundabout with signs and rules that drivers just can’t seem to follow.

BEST COMMUNITY EVENT Winner: Party in the Park Finalists: Exhibition & Canada Day Party in the Park really is the best community event. Taking place every summer in the heart of Chilliwack, Party in the Park brings together superb live entertainment with space to dance, booths from local crafters and cooks, and a high likelihood that you’ll run into at least a few people you know. On top of that reason, there’s also the beautiful mountains and the readily accessible outdoors that makes Chilliwack a great place to live.

It’s one heck of a hike, but the sight from the top of Mt. Cheam makes it the best spot for a good view. Aside from the stunning vistas, hiking Mt. Cheam means you get to brag to your friends you made it to the top of one of the most recognizable peaks in Chilliwack. Much shorter but just as pretty a spot for a good view is Mt. Thom. Elk Mountain also ranked in the top three Chilliwack locations for a good view.

B E ST DECI S ION M ADE BY CHILLIWACK CITY COUNCIL Winner: Demolish Empress Finalists: Evans Road Development & Get rid of strippers Of all the decisions made by the Chilliwack City Council, the best one was demolishing the old Empress Hotel. This downtown hotel was past its prime and when the city bought the hotel it was quickly knocked down to make room for future development as part of downtown revitalization. Other popular decisions include the Evans Road development currently underway, and getting rid of strippers.
