Heritage Park is the place to be to celebrate Canada Day in Chilliwack this Friday. The fun starts early and ends with a bang in the evening. Get things going with a pancake breakfast, hosted by the local Kiwanis Club of Sardis. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 11 on Floor 1 at Heritage Park. The cost is just $4 with proceeds going to the Chilliwack Special Olympics. The Chilliwack RCMP will be on hand to serve up the delicious fare. Also opening early is the Atchelitz Threshermen’s Association Heritage Village. The village, located adjacent to the Heritage Park grounds, will be open from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The displays depict early Fraser Valley life and include early steam and gasoline engines, tractors and machinery used in farming and industry dating back to the early 1900s. There’s also over 16,000 square feet of museum buildings displaying early household artifacts as well as horse drawn carriages, wagons and tillage equipment, vintage cars and more. Admission to the grounds is by donation. Canada Day at Heritage Park also offers a chance to explore Chilliwack’s deep agricultural roots. The Chilliwack Agricultural Society offers its ‘Salute to Agriculture’ and will have animals, displays, farm equipment and information on agriculture in the community. Dog lovers, meanwhile, won’t want to miss the Chilliwack 4-H Dog Club’s presentation. The club promises to delight the crowds with its dog agility demonstrations scheduled for 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. If you prefer four wheels to four paws, then be sure to catch the third annual Canada Day Car Continued: CANADA/ p17

Looking for relaxation? You’ll be soaking it up in Harrison. Soothing mineral waters drawn from the nearby hot springs infuse the waters of the public pool in this sublime lakeside town. And the Harrison Festival of the Arts
Society has immersed the resort town in culture – one concert at a time – by pulling in music acts from around the world. To see the town at its best, take the kids to the annual Children’s Festival during the popular summer festival, or enjoy one of
the many concerts held in the intimate Harrison Memorial Hall. Hiking trails, campgrounds and water sports also abound, with 200 kms of shoreline and several smaller outlying lakes and waterfalls.
Historic community of Yarrow home to hundreds of skilled, hardworking farmers fleeing hardship in Russia. Yarrow continues to be predominately a farm community. However, it is also home to an eclectic array of artists and crafts people. A drive down Yarrow Central Road takes you past potters and carvers studios, stores and antique shops. And a drive through the town showcases some of our best farm operations. A cruise up Majuba Hill gives a panoramic overview of this special community.

The quaint community of Yarrow harkens back to the late 1920s and goes to great pains to preserve much of the look and feel of that time along its main street, Yarrow Central Road. And for good reason. Yarrow’s existence was hard won. Sitting on the eastern edge of what once was the massive Sumas Lake, Yarrow was British Columbia’s first Mennonite community. The lake was drained as part of a major project to control flooding in the valley and to create farmland. The town became

As the work week draws to a close, what better way to reconnect with the family than listening to live music at Central Community Park. Every Friday evening throughout the summer the park comes alive with Party In The Park. Bring a lawn chair, grab the kids and sit back and enjoy the entertainment. Hosted by Chilliwack Downtown BIA and this year sponsored by Coast Capital Savings, the event has become a summertime favourite. Throughout the summer neighbours meet neighbours as they pick through baskets of fresh local produce and whimsical crafts courtesy of the Farmers’ Market. They line the grassy surroundings of the park and listen to the live, local music coming from the main stage. They meander through the kids area, trying a bit of this and a bit of that. And the best thing is, there is no ticket to buy. Just come and be yourself. Popular entertainer and musician Trevor McDonald is coordinating the entertainment that will light up the stage and have you dancing until the end. Last year, special theme nights proved so popular organizers are bringing them back this year. For each of the eight nights, there will be a different theme. Watch for special themed nights and band line-ups on the Party in the Park Facebook page or in the Chilliwack Progress. Visitors from all over Chilliwack, as well as surrounding communities, come to Central Community Park to enjoy our wonderful party. This party will continue during the summer of 2011 so plan to join the party and catch the excitement. Central Community Park is located at the corner of Victoria and Young in Downtown Chilliwack.
There’s something special around every corner at Minter Gardens.
Minter’s garden delight Classic Car Show set for July 17 Call it a little piece of paradise right here in the Fraser Valley. Minter Gardens is a show piece of gardening splendor. The 12 themed gardens are designed to dazzle the senses with massive displays of artistic floral designs, many complemented by stunning water displays. But flowers are not the only thing you’ll find. On July 17 the Fraser Valley British Motor Club is partnering with Minter Gardens for its annual Classic Car Show. More than 100 mint condition, classic cars will
be nestled around the garden’s 32 acres. North American beauties and shining imports will be entered into eight different categories based on the origin and era of the car. A ninth ‘Premier Class’ category features the first place winners of each category from the last two shows. There will also be a ‘People’s Choice’ award for the vehicle that visitors feel is the most outstanding addition to the show. The People’s Choice winner earns the honour of becoming the Feature Car for next year’s show, so come on out and cast your
senses!

Chilliwack’s evening skyline is always magnificent, with Cheam’s peaks glowing pink and purple as the sun sets. But for one night each year, the view is even more spectacular. Some might even call it magical. It happens around midsummer, the night before the annual Flight Fest. As the hot summer daylight fades into black, and crowds gather for a barbecue and dance in the airport hangar and a dazzling display that signals the start of Chilliwack’s premier aviation event. Flight Fest (August 20 and 21) is one of the last free air shows in all of North America, and begins with a pancake breakfast at the airport, at 8 a.m. At 11 a.m., the public is invited to a pre-show that includes several static displays, from military helicopters to remote controlled aircraft. At 1 p.m., the air show begins in earnest with a spectacular display of flying wizardry. The full line-up is sure to please any air show fan. And for those coming to Flight Fest for the first time, listen for the announcer to guide you through all the motions and history of the aircraft as they loop, spin and soar overhead. There’s even a Kid’s Landing, designed to keep the littlest aviation fans busy for the day. There are a few things to remember as you head out for the Flight Fest, including lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on, jacket, camera, binoculars, comfy shoes, money for concession stands and souvenirs, sunscreen, sunglasses and an umbrella.
