February 12 • Vancouver snowboarder, Johnny Lyall, flies through the Olympic rings to kick off the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Games at BC Place.
Best year of career for this Progress photojournalist doesn’t get any better for a It small-town photojournalist than having the opportunity to cover the Olympics. But, believe it or not, I was reluctant at first about putting my name forward for the chance to shoot such a huge event on behalf of the Black Press newspaper chain. Imagine the chaos, I thought. Imagine the crowds, the traffic,
the swarms of media, the pressure of daily deadlines. Where would I stay? How much sleep would I get? How would I get from one venue JENNA HAUCK to the next? What about getting access to extra camera gear? What if I missed “the shot”?
The questions rolled through my head. I had about one week to think about it. What if I did go? Imagine the experience. Imagine the athletes and events I would photograph, the people I would meet. Imagine the images I would come home with. It’s the Olympics — how could I not go? I was convinced. I put my name in, and about 10 days later I found
out that I, along with one other photographer and two reporters, was hand-picked to go. Shooting the Olympics was a completely different way of working than what I was used to at The Progress. Here in Chilliwack, it’s usually fairly laid back. Since we are a biweekly paper, I have ample time from the moment I shoot an assignment to when it’s going to
be published. This is not the case with the Olympics. Editors need your images before they’re even shot. Okay, so I’m exaggerating a bit. But, as soon as one Olympic event was over, the pod of photographers would hurry, with cameras and bags swinging from each arm, into the media centre Continued: PHOTOS/ p5

Images of 2010 PHOTOS from 3 to file their images. Some, like those from Reuters and Canadian Press, would even file photos during the event from their laptops. For a photojournalist, the Olympics are very rushed. You hurry to arrive early, you wait, you shoot, you file, and
you’re on to the next event. Working with daily deadlines at the Olympics, and alongside professional photographers from around the world, taught me a lot. I learned how to use my time wisely. I got tips from several photographers on what to look for when shooting a sport that I’d never shot before.
I got advice about which lenses were recommended to photograph different events. I learned that being shoulder to shoulder with dozens of other photographers isn’t as brutally competitive as I thought it would be. I realized we were all there for the same reason, to shoot the same thing, but through
different eyes. I brought all this back to Chilliwack with me and have applied it as best as I can to my job at The Progress. But the most useful piece of advice I brought back was a saying from a new friend and fellow photographer: “Don’t point and shoot. Aim and create.”

July 13 • Tracie Welsh spends time with son, Sawyer. Welsh suffers from MS and went to Mexico in September to receive the controversial CCSVI (chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency) procedure. The procedure involves using angioplasty balloons to clear narrowing or blockages of major veins leading from the brain to the heart. The theory behind CCSVI is that blood backup caused by blockages leads to MS symptoms, and restoring blood flow will halt the progression of MS and roll back the clock on prior relapses.

An avid musician, Olivia has a passion for the arts. She is an “A” honours student who, despite a busy schedule, is generous with her time volunteering for various projects in the school and in the community. Olivia works as a volunteer for the Chilliwack Lions Music Festival, the Rotary Book Sale and for events held by the Mount Cheam Pony Club. She is a trombone player in the school Jazz Band and plays flute in the Senior Concert Band. She is a peer tutor in the junior band classes and has taught music in summer music programs for new students. She has toured with the music groups to numerous festivals and performs with them regularly in the community. Olivia has also stage managed two of Graham’s musical productions (Urinetown and Hard 2 Hide). In this role she exercises her strong leadership skills to organize a team of stage volunteers to run things behind the scenes. A writer in her free time, Olivia plans to pursue a career in psychology after high school. Congratulations Olivia on being selected G. W. Graham’s Leader of Tomorrow for October.
An avid tutor, Audra has a passion for education. She has been the top academic student for seven consecutive years, and despite a busy schedule, is generous with her time volunteering for various projects in the school and community. Audra is an active volunteer in her church and youth group, where she serves on the Team of Leaders, and organized a group of over 20 people to serve in Haiti. However, because of the earthquake, the team wasn’t able to go, but sent over $15 000 of relief aid in their place. She also donates her time teaching Kids club, volunteering with the Rotary Book Sale, Gleaners, Me to We Day and Operation Christmas Child. As the co-president of the student-run Humanitarian Club and dedicated leadership student, she is always doing something with the school. Audra is also a focused athlete, participating in the Track and Field Team and Tennis club. Whether it be an English essay or organizing a canned food drive, Audra strives to do everything to the absolute best of her ability. After a year of bible school, Audra plans to pursue a career in teaching and health sciences. Congratulations Audra on being selected Sardis Secondary’s “Leader of Tomorrow” for October!

Music is very important to Allan. He recently was the Composer, Musical director, Pit Band Conductor, and Pianist for the GW Graham student Musical Theatre Production, “Hard 2 Hide”. Having completed Grade 10 RCM Piano with First Class Honours, Allan will be taking his ARCT Exam in August next year, thus completing his formal piano teachings. Allan has been a part of several musical productions as the rehearsal accompanist/pit band pianist with GW Graham as well as the Chilliwack Player’s Guild. He participates in both the Concert and Jazz Bands and Combo Band playing the trombone, euphonium or piano in addition to being the accompanying pianist for two Vocal Jazz Groups. Allan participates in multiple extracurricular music groups including the Chilliwack Youth Orchestra and Community Choir. With a strong interest in Math and Science (Chemistry, Biology and Physics, Allan plans to further his education in both medical sciences and musical studies. While balancing a very demanding musical, volunteering and curricular course load, Allan has managed to maintain “A” honours throughout his Middle and Senior School Years.
Thomas has emerged as a great leader amongst his peers. He has a positive attitude that goes well beyond school and is reflected in every aspect of his life. His academic interests range from Science to English - Sports to Music - all of which he achieves in the school’s top echelon. He is a precise, analytical and perceptive reader and writer, excelling in both Advanced Placement Literature and Composition and Advanced Placement Chemistry - all the while being a dedicated member of four school bands! Despite his busy and challenging schedule at school he still finds time to play, referee and coach soccer. Thomas has the potential to influence people as a great role model. He works hard to complete his goals but also works to help those around him complete their goals as well. His future plans include pursuing a career in business. Congratulations Thomas on being selected Chilliwack Secondary School’s “Leader of Tomorrow” for October!

HENDERSON John Edward Mar. 2, 1932 - Dec. 15, 2010 Dad passed away peacefully on December 15, 2010 at Eden Care Home at the age of 78. We are HENDERSON deeply grateful to the staff at Eden for their kindness and love given to Dad and our family during the two years that he was there. Dad is survived by his wife of 60 years Shirley, his daughters Patty (Darryl), Jean (Paul) and sons Randy (Maggie), Doug (Tammy) and Jerome, his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Jean and Tootsie. He will be deeply missed by all.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Michael and Margaret, his son Michael, brothers Joe and Chet and sister Maggie. Dad leaves a legacy of memories that will forever be remembered by his family - be it his worldly knowledge of all things to do with the planet earth or its surrounding skies. His interest was often a teaching tool for his grandchildren that included long walks on the beach in ToďŹ no showing them what lived in the ocean, peering through a telescope at night pointing out the planets and constellations, or lying on the deck at midnight to watch the meteorite showers. He loved to share any bits of information that he learned while reading his many books - they were his personal salvation. The Family wishes to invite you to a Celebration of Dad’s life to be held on January 15, 2011 at the Columbia Valley Community Centre, 1202 Kosikar Rd., Columbia Valley from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Your suffering is over, Dad. Be at peace. You will be in our hearts forever.

KULESH Peter July 13, 1924 – Dec. 23, 2010
These boots were bought for working‌ They served Peter well and long. Sadly, Peter and his partners, Have sung a last swan song. Go in peace, old P.K. Rest your oh-so-weary head, We recall you working in these boots, Now you’re resting well instead! Being a prairie child who grew up in the Dirty 30’s, Peter learned to make do with the equipment at hand. As a result, he made his way through life, forever ‘inventing’. Sometimes we chuckled at his inventions but we have had to concede that these very inventions were often quite brilliant. He truly loved working with his hands! In the mid-1960’s he settled in Chilliwack and bought the Green Gables Motel. When
that was sold, he bought some new work boots and began doing odd jobs throughout the area‌ building houses, rototilling in the spring and fall and snow-blowing in the winter. He and all his faithful boots worked together for many a year, until Peter decided to ‘slow down’ a bit. At that time, this pair of well-worn boots were retired, but Peter still puttered about in his garage for a few more years. Peter leaves his wife, Enid, son Larry (Elaine) of Comox, his step-family Ian (Lise), Chilliwack, Sandi (Edd) of Chilliwack, Ross (Shelly) of Airdrie, Alberta, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and their children. A private family gathering will be held later to remember the life of Peter. If friends so wish, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association of Chilliwack, a group which has made a huge difference in our lives! Thank you to the many people, most notably the care workers at Glenwood Care Home, Agassiz, who helped Peter and family. Such kindness has been shown to all of us!
LAMBERT Barry Delmar
On December 22, 2010 Barry departed on his heavenly journey, surrounded by his family, at the age of 67. He valiantly fought multiple myeloma for 7 years. From his humble beginning in Fort Vermillion, as a fur trader’s son, and working as a surveyor for the CN Railway, he graduated with a Masters Degree in Criminology, which lead to a successful career in Corrections, culminating in 12 years as a Judicial Justice of the Peace. Barry was also an active member of his parish, serving in a variety of volunteer positions including on parish and school councils. Barry was predeceased by his father Harry, and brother Bruce. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 41 years, Pauline, his mother Diana, his brother Brian, his children Jay (Sharon), Lori (Steve), Chris (Loreena), Michael (Lorena), Danielle (Cody), his grandchildren Nicole, Christian, Liam, Stephanie, Dylan, and newest granddaughter Ryen born December 21, 2010. The family would like to thank Dr. Weatherston, Dr. Winston, Rev. Paul Than Bui, and the many friends and family for their care, prayers and support. A funeral mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, December 29, 2010. In lieu of owers, donations can be made to The BC Cancer Foundation, a memorial page has been created in his memory on their website, www.bccancerfoundation. com.
