Message from the Mayor This guide is the result of the partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District No.33, who assist in the support of the Community School Associations, of which two new ones have been formed: the Rosedale Traditional Community School and the Greendale Elementary Community School.

I love fall; the cool night air, the trees ablaze in colour and most of all, settling back into a schedule after the lazy days of summer. A healthy lifestyle includes deliberately building recreation and leisure into your calendar and this publication will let you know about the myriad of choices that are available to you, your friends and family.

Each contributor to the Fall Leisure Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of the residents of Chilliwack and area. So on behalf of Chilliwack City Council, I encourage you to take a moment to read through this guide, see what it has to offer and most importantly, take advantage of all the amazing ways you and yours can get involved. Sincerely, Sharon Gaetz Mayor

The Fraser River: Its Spirit and Place

For 10,000 years the Fraser River has pierced through the centre of our Province before reaching the Fraser Valley and a slow meandering journey to the Pacific Ocean. For most of its life, the river offered food and material resources that enabled the Stó:lō, (the People of the River), to thrive and 8

expand in a series of riverside villages located along the river. The section that flows by Chilliwack is called the gravel reach. Here the river supports 30 species of fish, and provides rich habitats for resident and migrating birds and a host of mammal species. In the last century the river began to change. Flood control measures and developments have altered the landscape and are threatening the health of the river. The museum’s new exhibit looks at the history of the Fraser River and why, today, it is important to understand the processes that created the river and have sustained it for so many centuries.

For the past 42 years the Chilliwack Family YMCA has provided welcoming opportunities for people to have fun, find support, meet friends, be healthy and reach their potential. Whether you are a parent dropping off your child on his first day of child care, a 12 year old starting your first day of camp or an adult embarking on a fitness program to find a healthy balance, the YMCA is your place to find support and belonging.

Because we believe no one should be left out

We believe that everyone, no matter what his or her circumstance, can benefit from a YMCA experience. Our team will work with you to create a payment option for your membership or program that makes achieving your goals easier.

YMCA Annual Campaign

Last year in Chilliwack we gave away more than $100,000 in direct financial assistance, this year we expect that figure to grow. One hundred percent of donations to the 2011 YMCA Annual Campaign will go directly towards those in need. Ask how you can support our campaign.

Because we believe in our community. Volunteer with Us

Our community is close-knit and the people we serve come from all walks of life. Like all of us, our members and participants share a need to bond, a desire to connect. Since the beginning, the YMCA has played a role in that connection, believing that our health is about more than lifting weights, running marathons and being physically fit. Health comes from being strong on the inside too. Through participation, volunteering and connecting, we grow stronger and so do our families, local and global communities. As a volunteer, donor or campaigner with the YMCA you make all of this possible.

Because every child deserves a safe place to grow

Critical learning takes place in the first six years of life. That’s why we want every child to have access to YMCA programs early on that teach the language and literacy, social and emotional skills that ready them for the future. Our YMCA early and middle childhood programs provide children with a choice of activities, opportunities for leadership and a place to develop skills and relationships. A place that is different from school, a fun, safe and active place that engages children in constructive activities.

YMCA Preschool & Childcare

Full time spaces available at Elm Drive Child Care Centre. Preschool spaces available at St Thomas Church, Tyson and Bernard Elementary Schools. Mom,Dad & Me on Tues & Thurs. Call 604-792-7823 for more information. By the time our kids reach middle childhood, ages 6-12 years, their need for a safe place outside of school where they can grow, learn and develop socially becomes even more important, especially when you consider the alternative – children staying home alone.
