Poinsettias pack a powerful decor punch

It’s like a sea of bright red and green plants growing at Little Mountain Greenhouses in Chilliwack at this time of year. In fact, the colourful poinsettias have become their major Christmas crop, says co-owner Marc Shane. “We grow about 30,000 poinsettias in 25 different varieties,” he says. They also sell wreaths and Christmas trees, and other seasonal offerings, since they went from a wholesaler role to one of grower/retailer about six years ago. Originally from Mexico cultivated by Aztecs, the poinsettias also now come from Guatemala. The cheerful-looking plants in the euphorbia family are grown from rooted cuttings. It’s all part of a solid agri-tourism strategy they’ve been rolling out in recent years to offer more than just
plants. “People want to buy from the producer, because they know what they’re getting. We build a relationship of trust with our customers.” Fulfilling the dual roles of grower and retailer, the customers get a more complete experience when they visit the Yale Road East site. “You can come in the store and look in the greenhouse and see the whole crop,” says Shane. “It’s a real advantage because we can offer added value because we’re growing them here. “They’re much fresher if they’re not shipped in and they haven’t been handled.” And they’re being grown with a lower carbon footprint, since the Shanes start the growing period earlier, which means they use less heat. They are known as a bit of a fussy

plant. They need 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness each day when they being prepared for sale. “That’s what triggers them to flower.” It happens around the first week of October. Red is typically the favourite poinsettia, chosen by customers about 75 per cent of the time to add some seasonal flair. They range from three inches high up to 12 inches. And one of the most attractive red varieties is called Christmas Day. “You’re always working a year ahead on the crop.” They’ll order cuttings in January, which start arriving in the greenhouse in June. “Some will colour up faster than others.” So which ones have become Shane’s favourites? “There’s a relatively new one called
Ice Crystals, a variegated red and white, and it looks like ketchup chips,” he says. Other attractive options are Pink Cadillac or Cortez Burgundy, and sometimes the bracts are sprayed with glitter. “But it all started with red,” he says. Taking care of them isn’t as hard as one would think. Shane would know. He’s been growing them for 30 years. “A growing year is never the same as the one before. It’s different every year. That’s like anything in farming.” Oh and that bit about them being poisonous? An urban myth! The first thing to remember is that they’re tropical plants, and like to be kept warm and moist, but not overwatered. Keep the plant away from open drafts and heat sources to enjoy weeks of beautiful colour. ☐

Only a few hours left before your guests arrive? Don’t panic. You still have enough time to decorate your home so that you can welcome your visitors into a festive atmosphere that they won’t soon forget. Start by giving some panache to your plants by wrapping the pots with pieces of fabric and tying them with metallic or brightly coloured ribbon. You don’t have any place cards ready? Write the name of each guest on a piece of heavy paper and attach them to small bells or a sprig of evergreen. Don’t forget to add a ribbon for a finishing touch. The pleasure of Christmas begins with the eyes: table napkins tied up with ribbons and a dinner service with a Christmas pattern are a great start. To add a simple touch of magic to your table, apply some adhesive stars to
the outside of wine glasses. There’s nothing to prevent you from using Christmas tree decorations elsewhere in the home; try filling a large glass vase with Christmas tree balls for an original centrepiece. Scent in your home can add a real welcoming touch. Orange and spice fragrances are great for warming up the ambiance of a home, so insert about 20 whole cloves into some oranges and place them in a pretty bowl or string them from a ribbon. As the oranges begin to dry, they will release their Christmassy scent throughout your house. Alternately, create your own diffuser by simmering two oranges cut into quarters with three cinnamon sticks, two bay leaves, 125 ml of cloves, and a nutmeg in a litre of water on low heat — what a heavenly scent! ☐

Seeing a child’s ear-to-ear smile on Christmas morning is sublime, bringing back memories of holidays gone by. But for many shoppers, the thought of buying toys and trinkets brings mixed feelings. More and more, we are questioning how safe these toys are for the environment, and for the children playing with them. Thankfully, there are some questions you can ask yourself, and store staff, while picking off your Christmas list this year. First and foremost, you want to know if the product is safe for a child to play with. In Canada, changes have been made to limit the amount of hazardous chemicals in baby items and children`s toys. In January, the federal government effectively banned phthalates in items that would typically end up in a small child`s mouth. Phthalates are commonly found in plastics and perfumed items, and “may adversely affect reproduction and development,” the government states. Items with more than trace amounts cannot be sold, imported or even advertised in the country.

It’s a positive step forward for children’s health and safety, says Donna Gumprich, owner of All Things Being Eco. Anything handled by a small child is going to end up in its mouth, and if there are chemicals in a toy, it will end up in the child’s system. The changes only happened this year, Gumprich says, and so consumers still need to be cautious about what they’re buying. “There will still be items out there,” she says. “It doesn’t just go away.”

The ban also only applies to items that would end up in the mouth of a child under four years of age. To keep her store free of items with dangerous properties, Gumprich does her own research, seeking out responsible companies and staying on top of manufacturing processes. Her efforts mean that shopping her store, buyers can be confident the products are safe. It’s up to the retailer, she says, to be able to properly inform consumers on the products they are selling. Bamboo, for example, is a growing trend for fabrics and clothing. However, not all bamboo clothing is created equal. “While being turned into a fibre for clothing, It takes a harsh chemical to

do so,” Gumprich explains. “So what I look for is a manufacturer with a closed loop.” A closed loop means that the chemicals are treated on site and not released back into the environment. There are a number of ways Gumprich chooses which products to stock her shelves with. For toys, she looks to Today’s Parent magazine’s list. She also relies on tried and true companies such as Green Toys and Sprig Toys. Companies that are making efforts to be environmentally friendly aren’t going to be shy about it, so reading the packaging is a good indicator of environmental consciousness. Look for 100 % recycled products, and toys without batteries for starters. Many environmentally-friendly companies go one step further, Gumprich says. In addition to leaving the earth greener at the end of the day, they’re creating toys with a message. From recycling trucks made entirely of recycled milk jugs, to a Canadianmade memory game that features images and information about endangered species, there is play value, with a soft lessen in protecting the environment. “It’s an underlying message that kids just seem to grasp,” she says. There are other benefits of buying green, too. “The Sprig toys are all made of recycled plastic and sawdust,” Gumprich says. “So they actually smell like fresh wood.” And then there’s that nostalgic factor.

Toys didn’t always beep and whir and plug in. One of the most popular toys she just can’t stock fast enough is a line of stuffed toys that hold a blanket. There’s Peter Rabbit, Curious George and Olivia (featured on this page). But the one that flew off the shelf was the bunny from the classic book Goodnight Moon. “Those were gone in a heartbeat,” she says. But there’s more where they came from. Modern methods to tighten up skin

Many women are looking for subtle ways to enhance their appearance — without resorting to surgery or injections. Dr. Marianna Snyman of LaZure Clinique has been using a skintightening procedure known as “Thermage” for the past four years, for the body, the eyes and the face. “It’s been around for a long time and has an excellent safety record,” she says. Dr. Synman does all her own consultations with patients to ensure if it is right for them. “Although we cannot stop the skin’s natural aging, modern medical techniques can reduce or eliminate the wrinkles and damage the years have brought,” she says. The Thermage process uses radio frequencies to heat and tighten up the collagen in the overlying skin, and it creates very natural looking results.
The best candidates among her patients are those with mild to moderate skin laxicity, usually in the 35 to 55 age range, she says. “It’s someone with some good quality collagen left, and not too much sun damage.” It’s not a facelift, so the results are non-invasive and there is no down time. Patients can have it done in one session. “As long as the patient has realistic expectations, they’re happy with it,” she says. Sometimes a Thermage treatment is combined with fillers. “It’s a very individualized process that we go through,” says the doctor. It’s not a cookie-cutter approach and is based on the patient’s needs. “It really is the gold standard of skin tightening.” The idea is that it renews collagen beneath the surface, which can help contour and redefine areas like the

Feathers are a red-hot hair accessory that has exploded onto the scene, and taken the salon world by storm. Everyone likes feather extensions because they can be as bright or as subtle as you like. American Idol host Steven Tyler was one of first to be spotted rocking feather extensions in his superstar locks. Other celebrities have since hopped on-board, from Ke$ha and Jennifer Love Hewitt, to Selena Gomez, Miley Sirus and more. The feathers trend has grown exponentially in the past six months. How big has it become? “It’s huge!” says Sherry Stredulinski of Star Hair Studio.

It was her 19-year-old daughter, Haley, who convinced her to get the feathers into Star Hair Studio in the first place. “She said, ‘You need to get them,’ and she was right.” Mostly by word of mouth, it grew month by month. Customers have come to Chilliwack from Langley and Maple Ridge for the product. “We get walk-ins almost every day,” she says. “I could be putting in an order once a week.” A feather is threaded from a small silicone-coated bead, onto a small strand of hair, and then secured with a special tool. “It’s a very simple process.”
Why is it exploding on the fashion scene right now? There are several reasons. It’s completely safe and temporary, since there’s no dye or chemicals that can damage hair. “So it’s easy to do and easy to remove,” says Stredulinski.” They can be staggered at different lengths or clipped on with a three-in-one cluster. Customers can choose thin, willowy neutrals, or a hot shade on a bigger, more colourful feather. The options are endless — when they can keep enough variety in stock. At Star Hair Studio they range from $10 or $12 per feather. Usually they do a set of three for $30. They’re also hot at another Chilliwack location. Gente Bella director Genny Morran said they got on-board last
summer with feathers since they’re committed to being “where the trends are.” Feather extensions became popular and for good reason. “They’re a little bit of fun,” says Morran. They offer folks what amounts to an adaptable and stylish hair accessory. “We have people coming in every day looking for feathers. The great thing is they stay in your hair until they start to grow out.” Purple ones are the most popular at Gente Bella right now. “It’s changing and evolving. People are using them in different ways.” Many of the Gente Bella staff had definitely noticed Tyler wearing them last season on American Idol. “We’re Idol fans here and then we also started seeing them in all sorts of places,

including on celebrities, said Morran. At Gente Bella the feathers can be had for $10 or $11 each. What has been tough for Star Hair Studio is establishing a reliable source for goodquality merchandise, says Stredulinski. Some suppliers deal in high-quality synthetic feathers while others concentrate on natural rooster feathers. “We went with natural rooster feathers that have been treated, so they can be styled easily.” The company FeatherPlumes was started by a fly fisherman who was noticing that women were seeking out the type of feathers used to make fly fishing ties, to wear in the hair. “We found they were by far the most superior. “They hold up up and last even longer than they’re expected to. You can do
anything to them that you do to your own hair such as wash, dry, flat iron or curl them.” A feather extension is also a “great gift idea” for those who can be difficult to buy for or who may not be in a financial position to cover it. “Be the hero,” Morran says to would-be gift givers. “There’s every colour under the sun.” They conduct a little consultation with clients to see how they typically wear their hair to give them the best feather installation advice. The absolute beauty of it is that everyone can mould them to their own individual style. “They’re starting to be hard to get because they’re so popular,” said Morran. “When suppliers are hard up, you know it’s a big trend.”☐

A traditional festive table
Gathering all our loved ones around the table is a wonderful occasion to savour. Here are a few tricks for creating a decorative table setting that is enchanting and memorable and that will stimulate the appetite.
First of all, the key word is harmony. To create a feast for the eyes — and the taste buds — of your guests, all the different elements of the table setting should work together to create a specific mood.
Plain plates in a complementary colour should be used on a printed or patterned tablecloth. Inversely, opt for patterned dishes when using a plain cloth, paying careful attention to the colours in your decor. A tip from
the professionals: keep your most beautiful plates for the starters and the dessert, as this is when guests tend to linger longest over their food. The overall look of your table can be embellished with a centrepiece, either store-bought or handmade. This could consist of an elegant plant pot or vase, for example, in which decorative elements of your choice can be placed. Evergreen branches with berries or some candles are simple choices. For an even more dramatic effect, place a decoration, such as a small branch of holly, at the side of each place setting. It is important, however, not to crowd the table. Setting a table is a little like creating a stage set: it’s primarily a question of taste, inspiration, and imagination. Give free rein to your fantasies and enjoy your meal! One last tip: in order to keep the food hot for longer, think about heating the plates in a warm oven for a few minutes before serving the food. ☐

Decorate for Christmas with the kids For many, Christmas is impossible to imagine without a wreath on the front door, strings of lights along the roof, and a tree in the living room. Handcrafted decorations, made with the help of children, add to the festive atmosphere and bring back a bit of tradition to our consumer-oriented times. A Christmas mobile Ask the children to cut out different seasonal shapes from pieces of cardboard and then decorate them on both sides with drawings, glitter, or paint. They could also cut out pictures from magazines or make photocopies of photographs. Hang all these pictures around a ring made from fairly rigid metal wiring with the help of narrow ribbons cut in different lengths. The mobile can then be hung horizontally from a hook by three ribbons. Gift place cards Children can also make special place cards so that everyone will know where to sit at the table for Christmas dinner. To do this, give them
wrapping paper to cover small recycled boxes and their lids. They can then write the name of each guest on a label to be attached to one end of a strip of ribbon, while the other end of the ribbon is attached to the decorated box. Place a small treat in each then place a name label on each plate with the boxes in the middle of the table. Each guest must follow the ribbon to find his or her box. Frosted garlands Little ones love making snowflakes by cutting out different patterns from folded paper. Link the snowflakes with green and red ribbons to create horizontal garlands for the top of a wall or for vertical garlands to be hung side by side in a window. Whether the gang is coming over to watch the Grey Cup, the holiday table needs an anchor, or it’s just the two of you, the low-and-slow method is always super-convenient, cheap and delicious. Karen Welch, store manager at Fraser Valley Meats, has noted a distinct rise in the use of and interest in slowcooker recipes in the past year. So much so that November has been declared Slow Cooker Month at FV Meats. It’s such a popular notion that a whopping 78 people chimed in on the store’s Facebook page to offer their favourite slow-cooker recipes. That’s one of the ways the local butcher store has been reaching out to new, and established clientele with

Slow Cooker Pulled Beef 1 ½ - 2 lbs Inside Round Steak 1 large tin (650-700 ml) Tomato Sauce 1 cup BBQ sauce 3 tbsp vinegar 3 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce ½ tsp thyme 1 cup finely diced red & yellow peppers 1 large onion, sliced Brown meat on both sides in oil in frying pan. Place browned meat into slow-cooker or dutch oven. Mix tomato sauce, bbq sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and thyme together in a bowl. Pour sauce mixture over meat. Top with sliced onions and diced peppers. Cook in slow-cooker, either four to five hours on high or eight hours on low. If cooking in a dutch oven, preheat to 300 degrees, cover and bake for 3.5 to 4 hours. Remove from slow-cooker or oven, pull meat apart with two forks. Serve over a bed of rice or on a crusty bun with cole slaw. ☐

Unika - unique fashions for a unique city

It’s fun to watch what’s on the runways, but fashion isn’t all about following the latest trends. More than ever, it’s about being an individual. It’s about finding a way to be unique, and letting your true colours shine. One of the easiest ways to infuse your own unique feel into your wardrobe is to look in shops that offer alternatives. And as Chilliwack’s newest clothing store, Unika fits the bill.
The “modern vintage” shop is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Paul Doran and Alison Cross. And while they may be relative newcomers to the Fraser Valley, they’re seasoned vets when it comes to fashion. They know that each person who walks into their store hopes to find that one item they can’t live without, and that one item nobody else is wearing.

And so Cross and Doran travel twice a year down to Los Angeles, where they hunt for pieces their customers are craving. They prefer to see and feel the clothes before buying, to ensure high quality fabrics and manufacturing. For Cross, running a clothing store is a dream come true. “I love clothes,” Cross says. “They’re my personal passion. And I’ve always wanted to own a clothing store.”
The couple opened Unika in July this year, but Cross also co-owns a similar store, Random, in Squamish. In addition to stocking their shelves with clothes they find in L.A., Doran and Cross offer consignment services to their customers. It’s allowed them to expand the styles that are available to their customers, and they keep their stock rotating, almost daily. con’t on pg. 22
