However, the Premier said it would be “bizarre” if the strongly

conservative riding of ChilliwackHope bucked political history and sent an NDP MLA to Victoria. The only way for the NDP to win here would be for the BC Conservatives to act as a ‘spoiler’ and split the conservative vote, she said. “This (byelection) is the first chance any community in BC will get to say ‘No’ to handing over our government to the NDP” in the May, 2013 provincial election, she said.

“I’m really hopeful the voters of Chilliwack will honor (Barry Penner’s) legacy and support his party in the byelection,” she said. Rotary Club rules prohibited the Premier from talking politics during the noon-hour meeting. Penner announced his resignation as MLA earlier this month in order to return to private law practice. The BC Liberals have not fielded a nomination candidate since Diane Janzen withdrew her name,

yet two NDP candidates and one BC Conservative candidate have announced nomination bids so far. BC Conser vative Leader John Cummins also visited the Chilliwack-Hope riding on Monday. He claimed the party doesn’t need to split the conservative vote to win the byelection, just draw on voters who stayed home rather than vote for BC Liberals in the last election.

Steps to prevent further flooding in Chilliwack’s unprotected areas will cost anywhere from $1.3 million up to a little more than $5 million. Some property owners in the Carey Point area, on the northern end of Chilliwack, suffered localized flooding when a berm outside the east dike failed during the 2011 Fraser River Spring Freshet. Significant erosion has been a headache for Chilliwack officials for years, with a shifting scour hole eating away at rip rap all along the riverbank from Carey Point to Island 22. Council received a report Tuesday from city staffer Terra Friesen containing a range of engineering solutions prepared by consultants Northwest Hydraulic Consultants. NHC recommended the least expensive of three options for Chilliwack, at a cost of $1.3 million. The alignment offered the most longevity, cost efficiency, as well as an access road and a $75,000 “check dam” to protect Orchard slough, according to the report. The most expensive solution,v at $5.1 million, would see an access road built, and bank protection with an estimated 7,000 truckloads of gravel. Added to that would be up to $150,000 in annual maintenance costs. Options 1 and 2 however come with alignments set back from the river, which won’t include the more costly bank protection work stretching 300 feet into the river. The flooded property owners of Chilliwack have stated they would like to see the city go with the $5.1 million option with full bank protection. Critics say email shows salmon inspectors’ bias Cohen Inquiry ends with fresh controversy over virus tests Jeff Nagel Black Press Federal officials in charge of fish disease testing are denying they deliberately set out to quash claims that a dangerous salmon virus was detected this fall in wild Pacific stocks. The Cohen Commission into the decline of Fraser River sockeye salmon heard new evidence Friday

that critics say suggests federal agencies were willing to suppress the truth about risks to salmon to protect industry and trade. One email entered in evidence came from a B.C. manager of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which swiftly investigated alleged findings of Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) virus and then refuted those reports. Joseph Beres wrote to CFIA colleagues Nov. 9 to praise their “very successful performance” in briefing the media on their initial findings refuting the independent tests. “It is clear that we are turning

the PR tide to our favour,” Beres said in the email. “One battle is won, now we have to nail the surveillance piece, and we will win the war also.” Dr. Kim Klotins, the acting national manager of disease control contingency planning at the CFIA, said staff can get “a little bit exuberant” in internal emails. “I really can’t speak to what he was thinking,” she said under cross-examination. “My read is there is not a particular viewpoint that we’re following,” Klotins told the commission. “The point of surveillance is to find out if is there or is not there.”

Dr. Stephen Stephen, the director of DFO’s Biotechnology and Aquatic Animal Health Sciences Branch, also rejected suggestions federal employees pre-judged this fall’s ISA investigation. “We’re not about disproving anything,” he said. “We’re about proving the facts.” He and other federal panelists defended CFIA’s recent determination that re-testing failed to confirm any presence of ISA in several wild salmon collected separately by SFU professor Rick Routledge and independent biologist Alexandra Morton. Stephen said the need for accu-

racy in announcing disease findings is critical, because of potential major impacts to international and domestic trade, as well as fishermen, fish farmers and First Nations. Some of the scientists who conducted the lab tests for Routledge and Morton that delivered the initial positive results testified they felt attacked or intimidated by CFIA during the follow-up investigation. New Rosedale set to soar Katie Bartel The Progress For Jeff Hanson, it seems like just yesterday he was standing on a mound of gravel trying to picture what his new school would look like. “Honestly, at the time, I thought I could picture it, but I did not picture this,” the vice principal of Rosedale community traditional school said as he looked out one of the upper level classroom windows to a bird’s eye view of the community. “It’s more incredible than I could have possibly imagined.” The new kindergarten to Grade 9 school, which is located on the old middle school grounds, officially opens to its students on Jan. 3. The Progress was invited in for an advanced tour. “Our teachers have been itching to get in here and you can’t blame them,” said

Hanson. The new facility is 7,500 square metres, with two levels, and has a capacity for 510 students. That’s almost double the square metres of the two old schools combined, and space for approximately 70 more students than the school currently has registered. While the new classrooms are smaller than the old ones, the storage space is more abundant with builtin cubby holes, shelves, and additional space behind the whiteboards. Most also have a wall of windows that are equipped with electronic steel shutters to cut down on glare, or darken the room if needed. Specialty teachers were allowed input into the design of their classrooms. The art teacher requested additional windows for her room, the librarian determined where the book stacks would be built, and the music room was designed to accommo-

date both music and academic courses with insulated walls, floors made of specialized rubber, and 25 large baffles hanging from the ceiling to manage the acoustics in the room – just the way the music teacher had wanted. “These teachers now have a space they have ownership of,” said outgoing principal Todd McLean. Being true to B.C. roots, the new school is a wood lover’s dream. Some rooms have massive, exposed wood beams; nearly every wall is detailed with slats of wood accents; and many of the ceilings also have hanging wood slats. In the hallways, ceilings

are detailed with bulkheads that follow the pattern of the curved, red lines in the polished cement floor. “You could resemble [the lines] to a river flowing, the only thing is, it’s not a blue river, it’s red, our school colour,” said Hanson. But it’s the space in the hallways that most are talking about. “It’s one of the first things people notice, look at the room, look at how wide the hallways are,” said Hanson. “They’re shocked at how wide they are. Even upstairs, in the middle school classroom wing, where there’s lockers, there’s still a lot of space.” The school facility isn’t

the only thing sparkling new. The athletic fields have also been upgraded. The field used to be “almost like a swamp land,” said Hanson. “It was an awful, slushy, muddy, holeinfested field,” that couldn’t be used from November to April. But now, there are two official-sized soccer pitches; one that is sand-based, which will allow for better drainage, and the other that has been risen above the flood plain. The basketball courts have also been resurfaced, and three official sized tennis courts have been built. “I’ve heard so many things about how Rosedale used to

be a booming community, hustling and bustling,” said Hanson. But over the years, the community has grown tired. Hanson believes the new community school could change that. “This place could really become a community hub,” said Hanson. “I just think when people really understand what’s here, that they’ve got so much right here at their fingertips, they’re going to come.” Demolition of the old Rosedale middle school will commence in January, and demolition of the two-storey section of the old elementary school will also take place sometime in the new year.

News Former NDP candidate seeks byelection nomination Robert Freeman The Progress Kathleen Stephany, a Harrison Hot Springs resident and former provincial NDP candidate in Langley, has announced her bid for the party’s nomination in Chilliwack-Hope. A registered nurse and teacher of ethics in the nursing program at Douglas College, Stephany is also a former B.C. coroner in charge of special investigations who gained a reputation in 2005

as a whistleblower. Stephany is also no stranger to business success, having run her own psychological counselling practice, but she said government should represent all the people, not just the elites. “We have a society where we can have it all,” she said, “it doesn’t have to be on the backs of the poor.” In the 2009 election, Stephany ran against sitting BC Liberal MLA Mary Polak. Stephany said she was reluc-

tant at first to seek the NDP nomination in Chilliwack-Hope because it is such a large riding, and she only recently became a permanent resident in Harrison Hot Springs. “But we’ve always had a weekend place here in Harrison,” she said. Although the riding is a longtime conservative stronghold under BC Liberal MLA Barry Penner, Stephany said she believes Chilliwack-Hope is ripe for the taking by the NDP in the

upcoming byelection. “The demographics are changing out here,” she said. “I think people are ready for a change.” “I think the NDP has done a lot of changing and growing too,” she added. Tyson Road will be built in 2013 and it needed a name, according to the staff report. Sardis library was a clear preference with the public in an open house survey, along with Watson Glen Library, which a few respondents

favoured. The issue of finding a new library name was referred to the Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL) officials, who responded that Sardis library was their preferred option. Some may not be

Setting the tone While all the sound and fury over education bargaining in the past four months has come from the B.C.Teachers Federation and BC Public School Employers’ Association, some real and substantive bargaining has been taking place. Unfortunately, it doesn’t involve the teachers. The BCPSEA has quietly concluded an agreement in principle with representatives of the Canadian Union of Public Employees and other unions representing support staff in the K-12 public education system. The agreement was announced on Thursday. The agreement is not a final contract, but rather an overarching framework which will apply if school districts can come to an agreement with their local unions by Feb. 29. The agreement in principle calls for no wage increases from 2010 to 2012, but does have a wage reopener clause, should provincial guidelines calling for a “net zero” result from contracts change. It does include some additional money, notably $7.5 million annually for preparation time for educational assistants, and $550,000 for a support staff education and adjustment committee. CUPE has not been beating the political drums against the provincial government over education funding, as has the BCTF. Rather, it has worked diligently with the employers’ representative to come up with a realistic contract that calls for no concessions. At the same time, it recognizes that the taxpayers’ ability to pay more has all but run out. Nor has it brought in moves designed to put pressure on parents, administrators and school districts, such as refusing to do report cards or formally meet with parents to discuss student progress, as the BCTF has. The BCTF has legitimate issues about class size and composition, and how to resolve a lawsuit it won over past changes to its contract. However, it needs to bargain constructively, as the support staff unions have. The education system should be functioning fully, in order to carry out its mandate of developing today’s children into tomorrow’s responsible adults. ~ Black Press

Premier Christy Clark on her political year VICTORIA – I recently sat down with Premier Christy Clark for a year-end interview to talk about her eventful first year back in politics. Here are excerpts from that discussion: TF: People in general are a bit cynical about the treaty process. You could say that about Sophie Pierre [former Ktunaxa chief and chair of the independent B.C. Treaty Commission]. In her report this year she talked about the mounting debt from 20 years of negotiations and basically gave an ultimatum to fix it or shut it down. Do you see the commission continuing as it is, or do you see some changes ahead? PCC: We’re not planning any significant changes to it. We are starting to see, just now, the fruits of all the work from the minis-

tr y and from the government and from the treaty commission. And that’s all starting to move pretty quickly. The Taku River Tlinglit economic agreement [mining development and protected areas in the Atlin area], there are a number of these agreements that are starting to flow Tom out, and it’s been FLETCHER a long, slow, frustrating process. So now is the wrong time to walk away from the process, because there’s been 20 years of work invested in this, and we’re finally starting to see the fruits of it. TF: A related subject is the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway

oil pipeline. There’s a lot of aboriginal opposition to that. The federal Natural Resources Minister, Joe Oliver, not too long ago called this a “nation building project.” It certainly fits with your jobs strategy. Do you support the concept of the pipeline? PCC: First of all, we are foursquare behind the concept and soon to be reality of the liquefied natural gas pipelines, which would take B.C. gas and get it to the port at Kitimat. There is pretty much unanimous First Nations support along the way, community support, through the environmental approval process, it’s all working. The Enbridge proposal is far from that. Being able to get triple the price for Canadian oil would be a big benefit for Canada overall. But the project is one where

we have to examine both the costs and benefits. That’s why it’s in the environmental approval process. This is the first of its kind, so I think we have to get a good look at it, and once we have the facts before us, we can have a debate about whether it should go ahead. TF: The carbon tax. Do you think it’s working, and will we see changes in the years to come? PCC: I think that it’s probably affecting people’s and businesses’ decisions about their reliance on carbon as a source of energy. I don’t want to overstate that, though. The thing about the carbon tax is that it’s hard to know how much difference it’s made. But I think anecdotally we see that it has made some difference.

Pedestrian who took a tumble says thanks I would like to thank the lady who stopped her vehicle in the middle of the traffic lane at the Cottonwood Mall Friday afternoon, to

CFIA witnesses said they sought to determine if the samples had been cross-contaminated with the virus in the lab or if other handling procedures led to an erroneous result. DFO researcher Kristi Miller also told the inquiry in its final days that the ISA virus or something very similar may have been present in wild B.C. salmon for up to 25 years. The CFIA has promised systematic salmon sampling to test for ISA in B.C. waters starting next year. The latest testimony came in the final days of the inquiry, which wrapped up hearings Dec. 19. This latest report from council will now be forwarded Emergency Management BC, said Friesen, asking for a formal response from the province, and to see if funding will be made available for any of the latest options, and which conditions would apply. A new type of trash bin will be keeping the streets of downtown Chilliwack greener and cleaner. Purchased by the Downtown Chilliwack Business Improvement Association as part of its greening initiative, the new dual purpose bins are designed with a section for garbage collection and a separate one for recycling. “Partnering with the City of Chilliwack to install and maintain these new units is greatly appreciated by the BIA,” said BIA director Alvin Bartel, who is also chair of the urban design and greening committee. The sleek stainless steel bins were chosen because they help reduce waste going to the landfill by separating the recyclables, as well as looking “aesthetically attractive,” Bartel said. In the past year more downtown businesses have received Façade Improvement funding to upgrade their exteriors, and part of Yale Road east was re-landscaped from Nowell to Five Corners, in partnership with CEPCO and the city.

Quirky, black comedy on deck from UFV department head Dr. Bruce Kirkley, who also directed last year’s production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the ensemble comprises mostly UFV theatre students. Dead Man’s Cell Phone is a play that examines how we memorialize the dead, and how that remembering changes us. It is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption

and the need to connect in a world obsessed with technology. Jean is the accidental protagonist, played by Renee Reeve. J.D. Dueckman takes the role of the dead man, Gordon, and UFV English instructor Virginia Cooke plays his mother, Mrs. Gottlieb. Colleen Plenert plays his widow, Hermia and Brandon Mindel, his brother Dwight. Other multiple roles

are performed by Natasha Ray, Liam Archer and Melissa Harris. Set design for this production is by Lisa Apps, with costume design by Catrina Lewis. Lighting design is by Mark Sutherland and sound design by Gabriel Kirkley. Stage manager is Rebekah Briscoe. Dead Man’s Cell Phone runs for two weeks only, opening on Friday, Jan. 13 at

Lorenz Pentz: Portrait of a young and aspiring artist Scenery paintings from the paintbrush of a child usually involve large sized trees and flowers, a large sun, a couple of birds and often, an unnaturally large cat or dog. Yet, when you look at the acrylic paintings created by nineyear-old Lorenz Pentz, you quickly notice the brightly coloured, unusually sophisticated work that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem like it was created by someone in grade school. Lorenz is one of seven children. The Grade 4, Watson elementary student has been painting since he was just three years old and he canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think of anything else that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d rather do. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love colour and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really have a favourite colour.â&#x20AC;? He paused, leaned back and then quickly added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like dark colours, though.â&#x20AC;? From the time that he was three, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been painting under the direction of Julie Anne from Julie Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Art & Custom Framing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a really, really nice lady and sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very generous. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taught me everything that I

know,â&#x20AC;? he said rather appreciatively. He also added that his parents are proud of his accomplishments and that his siblings are very impressed with this work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many of my paint ings around the house and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve given Ana many of MACEDO them to my brothers and sisters,â&#x20AC;? he said. Julie Ann recognized a special quality in Lorenz and has worked with him to develop his artistic ability as well as teaching him the financial aspects of the business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I mostly enjoy doing flower and scenery pictures. I am selling my paintings, both originals and reproductions and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m also commissioned to do work for people. Right now, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m working on two paintings. People basically tell me what they want and I use my own creativity when I

do the paintings,â&#x20AC;? he methodically explained, showing me the original picture and his interpretation on the canvas. Aside from the fact that the painting was a bit more abstract, the work was so detailed that there was only a slight difference between the original picture and the painting. Lorenz is a diligent and conscientious student who admits to excelling in art class. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love school. I work hard and I concentrate while Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m there. I listen to the teacher and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t misbehave. I would say that art and PE are my favourite classes and I do well in art,â&#x20AC;? he laughed. When heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not painting, Lorenz enjoys reading novels, but free time is hard to come by because when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not doing schoolwork, he can be found painting at Julie Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve certainly learned a lot about business from hanging out at the shop. I traded one of my paintings for sign work from Gidney Signs and I also donated one

of my pieces to a fundraiser for a little girl with cancer. It feels good to do something nice for someone,â&#x20AC;? he said with a certain air of maturity. As young as he is, Lorenz has already been considering his future and says that he intends to pursue an art career. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve

decided to do with my life when Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m older. Right now, using acrylics is easiest for me but I want to branch out and try oils and watercolours,â&#x20AC;? he said. For now, though, his plans are quite basic; as basic as they can be for a nine-yearold boy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am selling my

paintings and saving my money because I want to go with my mom to Disneyland.â&#x20AC;? How about your brothers and sisters? Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you want to take them with you, I wanted to know. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be able to afford all of my brothers and sisters,â&#x20AC;? he laughed heartily.

Howse building a foundation in Abbotsford Dan Kinvig, Black Press Ask Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward about the travails of rookie winger Ryan Howse, and a wide smile spreads across his face. It’s a smile, to be quite frank, that seems incongruent with Howse’s numbers this season – he’s dressed for just 10 of the Heat’s 27 games, and has yet to register a point. Howse’s infrequent presence in the lineup is part of a tough-love approach instituted by Ward to address the youngster’s shortcomings in terms of nutrition habits and conditioning. In late October, six games into his tenure with the Heat, Howse’s weight was 219 pounds – more than a six-foot-tall pro hockey player should weigh. Ward called him into his office and told him he’d be taking him out of the lineup for about a month. “I told him basically, ‘You’ve got to change physically before I can play you again,’” Ward said. “We tried to take

a real educational approach. “It takes 21 days to create a new habit in life – 21 days straight to do something right. I told him (Howse) about that, and he was like, ‘Wow, that’s a long time.’ And I said, ‘Exactly.’” In the educational world, Howse’s onemonth break might be described as a sabbatical – a leave of absence to focus on self-improvement. The approach is less conventional in the hockey world, and Ward had to sell the NHL parent Calgary Flames on it. Howse, after all, is a well-regarded prospect who was a scoring machine at the junior level, racking up 51 goals in 70 games with the Western Hockey League’s Chilliwack Bruins last season. The Flames signed off, and Howse did not play between Nov. 1 and Nov. 25, nor did he travel with the team. Ward turned him over to strength coach Mike Thompson, who took the rookie under his wing. “Mike took him

into his house with his family and showed him how to cook,” Ward explained. “He showed him how to grocery shop. He took him to five restaurants that he likes, and showed him how to order, what to eat, talked about portion sizes.” Howse admits it was tough to deal with not playing, and on occasion he vented those feelings via his Twitter account (@Rhowse22). While his teammates were away on a two-week road trip

through Texas and Oklahoma in midNovember, Howse mused about killing time watching the Justin Bieber concert movie, Never Say Never. But to his credit, Howse accepted responsibility and adopted a blue-collar approach to revamping his body. “Obviously the first little bit was tough,” the 20-yearold Prince George native acknowledged. “But I couldn’t let myself get frustrated and start getting mad

at management or coaches, anything like that. It’s my own fault. I have no one to blame but myself. I took it as a learning step. “It’s a job now, a business, and I take ever ything seriously. It’s starting to pay off in the way I feel and the way I’m playing on the ice.” Indeed, Howse has achieved tangible results – he’s carved his weight down to 205 pounds, and Ward rewarded him last Saturday by inserting him on the Heat’s sec-

ond line for a game against the Lake Erie Monsters. (His previous nine games had been spent on the fourth line). Howse skated alongside Roman Horak, his teammate the past two seasons with the WHL’s Bruins, and Paul Byron, and the trio was very effective in a 3-1 Heat win. “When we stepped out on the ice at the start of the game, I was like, ‘Wow, I don’t know if I can keep up to these guys,’” Howse said with a chuckle.

“I was a little nervous – I didn’t want to make a mistake and lose the opportunity. But as the game went on, I felt way more comfortable.” Rather than dwell on Howse’s early shortcomings, Ward said his progress has been “one of the great stories this year.” “He deserves all the credit in the world – he embraced it,” Ward said. “There’s all kinds of ways to develop at this level. There’s also a development in life, just of patience. Everything is fast this, fast that. The internet’s got to get faster. The iPad’s got to get faster. But there’s a level of patience (that’s valuable). The mental challenge of sitting on the sidelines for nearly a month might have been even tougher for Howse in light of the fact that Horak, his erstwhile junior linemate, has played to rave reviews as a rookie pro. He’s spent the bulk of the season with the Flames – making only a brief two-game pit stop in Abbotsford last week – and has two goals

and seven assists in 26 NHL games. But Howse said that Horak’s exploits only serve to inspire him. “I can’t be mad at that, when one of my best friends is succeeding in his hockey career,” Howse noted. “I’ve always known he’s a good player, maybe more than a lot of other people. “I’ll always support him, and he’s always texting me, finding out how my game’s going. That just says a lot about the type of person he is.” Up until this season, scoring goals had come as naturally as breathing for Howse. But with his conditioning now squared away, he’s optimistic his first at the pro level is just around the corner. “I think I’ve already been through the worst of the worst,” he said with a grin. “I’m going to keep working hard and not get frustrated. That’s the biggest thing – have fun with it a little bit. That’s the way I look at it. Eventually the puck has to go in, I’d imagine.”

I don’t often bet on sports but I do follow betting lines, odds, point spreads etc. You won’t find betting odds for anything BCHL related, obviously, but if there were I wonder what the odds would have been before wonder the season started on the Chiefs winning 19 off their first 31 games. 10-1? 15-1? I think probably higher, and most people who follow the league closely would not have who made that bet. Looking at it differently, what do you think k the over/under on Chiefs wins after 31 games would have been? would In over/under, a number is given and the bettor has to bet either more or less than thatt number. I think it would have been set at 12.5. That actually may be a bit high, as the Quesnel That Millionaires this team won only 13 games all off last year. Would you have bet over or under on 12.5? Tough call isn’t it? If the line was 18.5, would you have everr considered betting over? I doubt many people would have. would Winning 19 or more of their first 31 games is nothing new for the Chiefs. In the 16 previous seasons the Chiefs played in Chilliwack they’ve reached or exceeded that number seven times. The high number was 23 during the 2001-02 season. The low was 12 during Harvey Smyl’s firstt season with the Chiefs in 1993-94. When I look back at all 17 seasons, this season’s win total through 31 games is the second most surprising, and the most surprising from a positive standpoint. The most surprising was when the 1998-99 Chiefs only managed to win 16 of their firstt 31 games. Everyone expected more from thatt team and they eventually turned it around, winning 22 of their final 29 games and advancing to the league finals. So what lies ahead for the 2011-12 Chiefs? With only four teams in each conference qualifying for the playoffs, postseason hockeyy is far from guaranteed. Penticton has first place all but locked up which leaves four teams with a legitimate which chance at securing one of the remaining three spots. Joining Chilliwack in that quest are the Merritt Centennials, Prince George Spruce Kings and Vernon Vipers. One good team will miss the playoffs. The Chiefs currently have 20 players on theirr active roster, which is one below the allowable limit. They are carrying just four 20-year-olds, which is two less than the league limit. which I think it’s safe to assume we will see Harveyy Smyl make some additions to this team priorr to the Jan. 10 trade deadline, and I think we’re in for a very entertaining playoff run in the BCHL.

New pro in Chilliwack The Chilliwack Golf and Country Club has added a notable name as its new director of instructor. Jennifer Greggain hopes on board for the 2012 season, bringing with her a wealth of professional experience. Greggain’s resume includes 10 years of tour experience, including two on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) circuit. She spent four years on the Futures Tour and has been playing on the CN Women’s Tour since 2004. Greggain won the Washington Women’s Open Championship in 2010 and was awarded the 2010 CN Women’s Tour Low Teaching Professional of the Year award. “Jennifer has played golf at the highest levels, both in college and on the LPGA tour,” said CG&CC general manager Bryan Ewart. “She

joins our team with tremendous credibility and professionalism.” Greggain’s recent TPI certification enables her to provide a full range of instruction on matters such as golf-specific fitness, health and golf swing biomechanics. With Greggain at the helm, CG&CC is introducing an academy program in the spring. Cascades collect food

Members of the University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team went walking through Abbotsford last weekend, knocking on doors looking for donations of non-perishable items for the Abbotsford Food Bank. The project was very successful as they were able to fill 21 boxes with food. The walk and knock was headed by Alexa McCarthy, a Chilliwack secondary school grad

and third year kinesiology major. “Besides women’s basketball, we had help from the rowing, women’s soccer and men’s volleyball teams, and it was a great department effort,” McCarthy said. The team had already set up several boxes in the Envision Athletic Centre lobby (gymnasium on Abbotsford campus). Members of the UFV community were invited to drop off canned goods as they arrived to work out. Those boxes were removed Dec. 21, but anyone still wishing to donate can drop off nonperishable goods at the EAC or go directly to the Abbotsford Food Bank at www.abbotsfordfoodbank.com.

Chiefs hope to fill the rink The Chilliwack Chiefs are hoping to ‘Fill the Rink for the Food Back’ Dec. 28 as they host the Prince George Spruce Kings at Prospera Centre. Tickets to that game will be $5 (including taxes and service fees) for anyone bringing a non-perishable food donation for the Salvation Army. Season ticket holders are invited to bring a friend at no extra cost

beyond the food donation. Workers will be stationed at all four Prospera Centre entrances, gathering the food, loading it into trucks and sending it off to the Food Bank. ✞ Obituaries BEALE Reginald Peter July 23, 1949 - Dec. 18, 2011 Reginald Peter Beale, born July 23, 1949 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Dad left us suddenly on December 18, 2011 in Chilliwack. He will join his father, Reg Beale and sister, Eleanor (Apple) Allan in heaven. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Maureen Beale; his mother, Eleanor Charleton; his sister, Darlene Hanna; his children, Cindy, Sheila and Dean, step-children, Misty and Michael. Also, by nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. His grandchildren, Katelyn, Kimberly, JP, Adrianna, Kiely, Patrick, Veronica, Mitchell, Ayan, Amina and Anisa. Dad was known for being a hard worker, his love for his family, cooking great meals and golfing. Dad is a well respected man with a hard working ethic and loyalty to his family and friends. We are greatly saddened by his sudden passing. For years his occupation was logger in the forest industry; he loved being outdoors. Dad cooked great, delicious meals and loved having company over. Dad loved to go on vacations, make life meaningful and worthwhile. He never let a day pass without making it interesting. His personality was out-going, loving, accepting, appreciative, confident, compassionate, honest, intelligent and ambitious. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Shriners and Masons. He spent most of his life in Duncan and then later moved to Chilliwack. We love you and will all miss you. You are very important to us and we will never forget you. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 1 pm at Sands Funeral Chapel, 187 Trunk Road, Duncan. Family and friends are welcome to attend. TISSINGTON Kenneth Neil

Mar. 7, 1936 - Dec. 16, 2011 Victoria passed away peacefully, on December 16, 2011, at Chilliwack General Hospital at the MEYER age of 75 years, after struggling with many health issues, may God rest her soul. Victoria was born in Westlock, Alberta, and lived in various locations in Alberta, with her family, until the family moved to the Fraser Valley in 1976. She had a great penchant for life, was deeply enthusiastic and committed to her work, and she lived on for her granddaughters, whom she deeply loved. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Joseph and Helen, and brother Edward. Victoria is survived by her loving and caring husband of 54 years, Elvin, her son Ronald, her daughter Katharine, (Murray), beloved granddaughters, Kimberly and Kasey, as well, her sister Mary, brother John, sisters Kathleen (Joe), Betty (Donald), and Anne (Edward). A Funeral Mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by Father Bryan, with cremation to follow. Victoria’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and other dedicated nursing staff at Chilliwack General Hospital, as well, the numerous members of home-care staff for all your hard work. As well, a special thank you to Father Bryan, and Stewart McLean, of McLean’s Funeral Services, for devoting their attention, in our time of need.

Aug. 24, 1920 - Dec. 18, 2011 Ken passed away peacefully at Chilliwack General Hospital after a long life of good times with friends, TISSINGTON neighbours and family. Most of us have enjoyed his harmonica playing and received something that was made in his woodworking shop. Dad will be fondly remembered by his wife Nan, daughter Florence, and sons Terry, Frank, and Jim. Also his grandchildren, his brother Sid and the rest of the Tissington clan will hold his memory dear. We would like to thank everyone who was a part of Dad’s life and made his last few weeks richer with their visits. There will be a private celebration of Ken’s life at a later time.

WATMOUGH Kathleen Jesse (nee ROSS) Mar. 30, 1947 - Dec. 20, 2011 Kathleen Jesse Watmough (nee Ross) passed away peacefully at the age of 64 with her loving husband and family by her side at the Cascade Hospice, after a long courageous battle with cancer. One of 12 children born to the late John and Hazel Ross, Kathy was born in Kamoka, Ontario and then raised on a small tobacco farm in Ingersoll, Ontario. After marrying Barry, the love of her life, they headed out West and eventually made their home in Chilliwack, B.C. There they raised 2 wonderful sons and opened their home to extended family, international students, and anyone else who showed up at their

front door. Kathy worked in customer service at Sears and from there found her true calling within the Chilliwack School District. Starting at McCammon Elementary School where she founded the Annual Christmas Dinner for the students then moving on to Vedder Middle School, Kathy continuously strived to make the schools a better place and cared deeply for all of her colleagues and students. Voted “Girl of the Year” by the VP of Beta Sigma Phi, Kathy had volunteered her time such as being the VP of the Chilliwack Business Ladies Curling Association where she organized the 10th “Chili Spiel”, as a Volunteer Co-ordinator for the BC Summer Games in Chilliwack as well as the Grad Co-ordinator for the 1989 Sardis Secondary School Graduates. Kathy was a pioneer at heart and always
