Gwen O’Mahony was elected Saturday over two nomination rivals to lead the NDP charge in the upcoming Chilliwack-Hope byelection. O’Mahony’s first-ballot victory came after a rousing campaign speech by NDP Leader Adrian Dix in which he pointed to the party’s growing share of votes in past federal and provincial elections, a sign he believes that shows the NDP is “within inches of winning this constituency.” He said the party will throw the resources of a full campaign into the 28-day byelection to make up those “inches” to see an NDP MLA elected in this riding, long a stronghold of the BC Liberals. “This byelection is an opportunity to send a message to the government that has lost its way, that is out of touch, that has forgotten what its role is in the community,” he said. And an NDP win in Chilliwack-Hope, he added, “will send a message of hope and change across B.C.,” he said. “If we can do it here, we can do it everywhere.” But opponents are saying the NDP share of the vote actually went down in the 2009 provincial election because of new riding boundaries, and not even a split in the conservative vote guarantees the NDP a victory. Former MLA Barry Penner, whose resignation sparked the byelection, said when a poll-by-poll analysis of the 2005 election results are “laid on top” the new boundaries in 2009, the BC Liberals still held a comfortable margin.

Faster transit in Chilliwack’s future: Report Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Faster and better bus routes could be coming down the line for Chilliwack transit users. A Transit Future Plan update was presented by BC Transit planner Michelle Orfield at last week’s council meeting at Chilliwack city hall. “It’s starting to happen,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “Everyone on council is supportive and we can hardly wait to get the new Abbotsford line going.” Funding could be earmarked from next year’s budget for a new Abbotsford-to-Chilliwack express,

Gaetz said. The transit plan also includes local changes with the creation of a shopping shuttle, a new Evans route, with buses every 60 minutes, as well as routes around Chilliwack proper every half-hour. Local transit users have been pushing for a bus going past Stream to Walmart at Eagle Landing ever since the mega-store moved out of the Chilliwack Mall. “I think people will be thrilled to hear what’s coming,” said Gaetz. Stopping at several shopping areas, the long-awaited Evans route is part of some major route restructuring and improved service frequency in Phase 1 of the

Transit Future Plan, which is expected to see implementation in the “near future.” Even faster than either the Evans Route or the Chilliwack Route will be the Vedder route – a north-south express, zipping up and down the Yale-Vedder corridor every 20 minutes. “They’re saying 20 minutes but we’re aiming for an even shorter turnaround time,” Gaetz added. Most local buses currently run every 60 minutes, but they’re striving toward the gold standard of 15-minute bus service within Chilliwack in the long-term. “So much can change in 25 years,” said Mayor Gaetz. “But

it’s good to see we’re on the same page. “I think people are going to be very pleased.” The new Vedder route will provide ridership with “a really fantastic level of service,” said Michelle Orfield, BC transit planner, during her presentation to Chilliwack council on Jan. 23. The changes are part of a 25-year BC transit vision for local networks, regional and inter-regional transit. The introduction of Sunday bus service is being looked at, along with expanded weekday service. Some of the transit improvements have been in the works for years, but are contingent upon new

sources of funding. “The challenges around transportation is that there are always lots of partners involved and we can’t just order another bus,” said Gaetz. “But we’re looking forward to the next phase.” BC transit and ridership fares provide the other pieces of the transit funding pie. The transit future plan work began in spring 2011, with initial consultations held in summer and fall. Chilliwack home to B.C.’s top young farmers Chilliwack has long been recognized for its agriculture production. Now it’s being recognized for the young people behind that success. Two Chilliwack farm families finished first and second at the annual BC and Yukon Outstanding Young Farmer awards, presented last week at the BC Agriculture Gala in Abbotsford. Peter and Nicole Tuytel of Elmbridge Farms in Chilliwack were named the winners of the 2012 Outstanding Young Farmer Award in front of about 400 people at the gala. The Tuytels received

their award from B.C. Minister of Agriculture Don McRae and B.C. OYF chair Suzanne Cuthbert, a former B.C. Outstanding Young Farmer. Last year, Peter Tuytel was named a Master Breeder by Holstein Canada, becoming B.C.’s youngest-ever Holstein Master Breeder. It’s an award which recognizes at least 15 years of superior dairy cattle breeding. Both Peter and Nicole have a lifelong passion for cattle and a keen understanding of what makes a superior cow. Peter began building his herd at age 14

while Nicole began even earlier, tracing her herd back to two calves her grandfather gave her when she was just four. Their most famous cow, Elmbridge FM Loveable, a two-time Canadian national champion, is actually a cross of Pete’s maternal line with Nicole’s paternal line and was named the best bred and owned cow in the red-and-white Holstein show at the 2011 World Dairy Expo. The Tuytels also own Davidsons Raider Bronze, the first Canadian cow to receive a 97/100 rating. Continued: FARMERS/ p11

Cable and Internet services were disrupted in Chilliwack Thursday after a fire at a Yarrow lumber yard damaged overhead lines. The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. but fire crews managed to contain it to a Quonset hut used to store lumber at the site. RCMP and Chilliwack Fire officials are investigating the cause of the mill fire, which is believed to be “accidental,” at this point, said assistant fire chief Ian Josephson. The exact cause is still unknown, and RCMP is still conducting interviews. “But at this point we can’t point to any evidence to show it was deliberately set,” he added. Intense heat from the flames damaged overhead lines at the east end of the structure in the 4400-block of No. 3 Road, which disrupted some online services. The fire was prevented from spreading to the other manufacturing buildings, and there were no workers onsite at the time since the business was in the process of shutting down. Chilliwack resident Tim Croitor was at work Thursday afternoon at the Masonite door plant, across the road. He and his fellow workers watched the late-afternoon sky fill with black smoke at the plant. “I couldn’t see the building or any people, just the smoke and the fire,” he said. They opened the door of the loading dock bay at work and had a view to where fire crews were already on-site beating back the flames. “The word spread through our plant like wild fire that the building across the street was on fire,” Croitor said. Some of his co-workers are volunteer firefighters. “So they had to race to the fire hall to get their gear and then back down here to help out,” he said. Firefighters were still working away at it Thursday night, as an excavator dragged smoldering debris that had been stacked lumber, away from the building. Cables could be seen dangling from the utility pole closest to the fire. Service crews from Telus, Shaw and BC Hydro were on-scene into the night awaiting their chance to restore services as soon as the fire was out. Continued: YARROW/ p5

Too soon to pick a winner Media pundits were quick to see promise for the provincial NDP following the nomination meeting for the riding of Chilliwack-Hope Saturday. Certainly the party stands to do better than it has in the past. But it’s a little early to declare a win for the NDP quite yet. Party members have a right to feel good about their prospects. They have a veteran campaigner at their helm – a candidate who has remained visible throughout previous attempts (provincially and federally) to win seats in the region. Gwen O’Mahony is polished and personable, and is coming off a nomination meeting that drew national attention. She also has the advantage of fighting a byelection while her party is surging in the polls. And the fact that it is a byelection offers O’Mahony an opportunity since byelections are rarely kind to governing parties. But the biggest factor in her favour is the presence of another challenger on the right. True, the BC Conservatives ran a candidate in the 2009 provincial election. But he only drew seven per cent of the vote. This time around the party – which has enjoyed higher visibility since the fight against the HST – sees

real potential in star candidate John Martin, a UFV criminology professor and media columnist. According to some, this fight on the right, could split the vote and open an avenue for O’Mahony and the provincial NDP. It’s an encouraging scenario for party faithfuls who have never seen an NDP candidate elected in this historically conservative area before. But they should keep the champaign corked for now. This election will be decided by how effectively each candidate can get out the vote. And here, the BC Liberals have a clear advantage. Not only can they count on the organizational support of the Liberal constituency association for Chilliwack-Hope, they can also benefit from the formidable strength of federal conservatives. Laurie Throness, who is expected to be acclaimed as the Liberal candidate this weekend, is a former assistant to the former MP and immensely popular Chuck Strahl. The road to victory in ChilliwackHope will not be easy. And while it’s tempting to declare a winner before an election date has even been called, there remains much campaigning before voters here have their say. ~ Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress

Canada’s search for retirement sustainability Was Prime Minister Harper right when he suggested during his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last Thursday that wealthy countries are complacent and take their wealth for granted? And what about that rumble about the Old Age Security system? While our economy has outperformed many developed nations and is recognized as among the most sound by those at the WEF, Harper suggested that the wealth of western economies is no more inevitable than the poverty of emerging ones. And he made the point that many western nations are in financial straits because they focused heavily on providing services rather than a plan for how to pay for them. The managing director of the International Monetar y Fund, Christine Lagarde, was openly worried that severe widespread

economic cuts, especially in ailing Europe, could bring the world’s markets down. That comment didn’t help the comfort zone of John Manley, who now heads the Canadian Council of Chief Executives. But he also happened to agree with her. CBC quoted Manley as saying “We are not in one of those economies Margaret where things are EVANS faltering. Our unemployment rate is relatively low.” Well, relative, that is, to many elsewhere. According to the International Labour Organization, a United Nations agency, the world’s unemployed now number over 200 million people of which 74.8 million are youth aged 15-24 who were unemployed last year.

That’s an increase of more than 4 million since 2007. In the ILO’s annual report released earlier this month, the world faces the ‘urgent challenge’ of creating 600 million productive jobs over the next decade to generate sustainable growth and maintain social cohesion. “Despite strenuous government efforts, the jobs crisis continues unabated, with one in three workers worldwide – or an estimated 1.1 billion people – either unemployed or living in poverty,” said ILO Director-General Juan Somavia. “What is needed is that job creation in the real economy must become our number one priority.” Coupled with that job creation must be the education and training of skilled people who can meet today’s employment needs. Tuition fees are crippling which sends those wanting to improve/

upgrade their skills on a vicious cycle of chasing the dream job. Curiously, Davos was also the place where PM Harper addressed the other end of one’s working life when he referenced Canada’s Old Age Security System. It’s kind of an awkward, public place to make the statement to Canadians half a world away that he’s thinking of long term changes. While he has no plans to change anything that seniors currently receive, he touched on the sacred ground of considering changes for those who have some time to go before approaching retirement with “substantial notice and adjustment period and in a way that does not affect current retirees or those close to retirement.” You can see where he’s coming from when you crunch the numbers. And it ties in with his comment that some nations are in financial straits from providing

services without a payment plan for them. Over the next 20 years, the number of Canadians over age 65 will increase from 4.7 million to 9.3 million. Many seniors are living longer, healthier lives than when the Old Age Security Act came into force in 1952 meaning they will depend on it longer. So the cost of the program is expected to increase from $36 billion/year in 2010 to $108 billion/ year in 2030. Granted, a percentage of healthy, active seniors are opting to continue to gainfully work in some capacity but the projected numbers still forecast an unsustainable scenario. Sustainability has to be Harper’s keyword going forward as he stimulates the economy for Canadians or sees them retire from it.

I was worried this year as to how this Santa visit was going to go. She is old enough to not be tricked into sitting nice... When we arrived it was perfect. No one was around... no line and no waiting. I have to say I was so touched and so happy with the way you handled both my young girls; you never treated one differently than the other. You instructed us to take our time, to come closer slowly. You shared candy canes and stickers. You talked gently and made them both feel like the situation was okay, they were

safe and there was nothing to be afraid of. Your helper elf was just as good. We did get the girls on your lap, and we got a great photo without tears. The whole visit took about 20 minutes; we never once felt rushed, or pressured. We never felt different. It was marked as a huge success! I am so thankful for you and your kindness you showed! I am sure that as Santa sitting in a mall it can be tiring, and not the most glamourous job on your list, but I hope you know you are a celebrity in my girls eyes as well as mine! Thank you so much! We can’t wait for next year!

Dix said that talk of vote-splitting “disrespects” the voters, and the only way to win is to “get every vote” “Our strategy is to be confident and respond to the issues,” he said. Only 35 of 84 registered party members living in the ChilliwackHope riding were at the nomination meeting to cast ballots for the candidates, the low turn-out possibly due to weather conditions farther up the valley. About 150 party members, including several sitting NDP MLAs, attended the Saturday meeting at the Lions Club Hall in Chilliwack. O’Mahony said her nomination is a chance to carry on the work she began as the NDP candidate in the ChilliwackHope area in the last federal and provincial elections, and as a local party activist between campaigns. “I have built that really important groundwork ... necessary to sail us

through the next election,” she told delegates. “All I’m asking from you today is to allow me to finish what I started three years ago.” Dennis Adamson, electoral area director for Yale at the Fraser Valley Regional District, and Kathleen Stephany, a former NDP candidate in Langley with a “whistleblower” reputation while serving as a BC Coroner, also ran for the nomination. The winning candidate needed a 50 percent plus one majority to take the nomination. Sue Hammell, NDP MLA in Surrey-Green Timbers, said the party has an “unprecedented opportunity” to win an upset victory that will rattle the entire province. To finance the campaign, Hammell led a drive that raised more than $10,000 at the nomination meeting. Rollie Keith, who carried the NDP flag as candidate here in several past elections, urged party members to donate their time, as well as funds, to win the byelection. “This can be the victory we’ve waited for decades, generations even,” he said. rfreeman@theprogress.com

City of Chilliwack announced Friday it is proposing an Energy Integration Planning Study specifically focused on the Chilliwack Landing neighbourhood. earmarked for strategic planning projects focused on sustainable infrastructure and energy management. Another $5,000 toward the study will come from the city coffers. The Landing area has “unique potential” for integrated energy management, according to a city press release, because of the resources clustered there. The area encompasses city facilities like the arena, pool, and cultural centre, along with the hospital, schools and residential development.

Fiona Tymm is a grade 12 student at Sardis Secondary School. This semester she has her academic load packed full, completing Math, Chemistry, Biology along with English 11 and leadership. Leadership at Sardis really helped Fiona learn a lot about the school and all the different programs they put on. Additionally Fiona played on S.S.S. ﬁeld hockey and basketball teams, while taking up ice hockey in grade 10. Outside of school she participated on a mission trip in Mexico and volunteered at her vacation bible school and at the hospital. She has also helped at Ruth and Naomi’s soup kitchen. Soon she will be heading to Costa Rica along with 9 other Sardis students on a humanitarian trip. After taking a semester off after high school, Fiona plans to pursue a Bachelor in Math at UBC with the possibility of continuing in medicine.

Leadership and service is a way of life for Lorenzo Smith. It is ingrained in his personality. It is who he is. Fiercely competitive, he is also highly empathic. He works hard and the results are evident in his GPA and the many awards he has garnered over his high school career. He is inquisitive and assertive about his learning. He does not simply accept things at face value. He is an excellent critical thinker . However, his stellar academic achievement is only a small part of who he is. Active in sports in the community, he is a strong varsity athlete in Soccer, Cross Country Running and Track and Field at Graham. Lorenzo provides endless hours of service to the athletics department in the seasons he is not playing sports. As a PE Leadership student he organizes intramurals, volunteers his time to run track and ﬁeld meets and organizes and runs our annual gym blast event for our future grade seven students. He coaches younger students and he is an active member of the Senior Student Council. Outside of school, Lorenzo is an active member of his church congregation, teaching Sunday School and supervising younger children in the Nursery. Lorenzo plans to study sciences and eventually medicine in the future. Congratulations Lorenzo Smith on being recognized as G. W. Graham’s Leader of Tomorrow for December 2011.

Shannon Hames is a highly motivated and dedicated student whose love of music and learning makes her a leader within the school population. In addition to being a top academic student, she plays piano and performs with a number of the school bands including Rhythm and Blues, Dixieland and the Jazz Choir. She has a love for teaching which has led her to volunteer as a teacher’s assistant at Little Mountain Elementary. Shannon is one of the lead members in the African Relief Club which works to raise awareness of the problems in Africa as well as providing aid through fundraising activities. Shannon believes “it is important to make a difference in somebody’s life through volunteer work”. In addition to an already busy schedule, Shannon is currently enrolled in the Royal Conservatory of Music where she is already in her second year working towards a degree in music education. After graduation, Shannon plans on ﬁnishing the bachelor program and then go to Europe to continue her education (if of course, her parents agree!) We applaud her achievements to date and wish her all the best in the future.

Sardis drumline goes international Chilliwack’s drumline is holding a benefit concert on Feb. 21 to help offset the costs for its upcoming trip to China in March. Katie Bartel The Progress Sardis secondary’s drumline is China bound. From March 12-22, Chilliwack’s famed high school band will be performing all through Beijing, Shanghai, and surrounding areas. Conductor Bruno Gagnon isn’t sure what kind of reaction they’ll receive. “I hope I don’t get thrown in jail; I’m a little unorthodox,” he laughed. “I don’t know, maybe they’ll hate it, or maybe they’ll think it’s crazy and love it.” What’s not to love? Last Friday, when the school was dark from no power, and when most students had already ventured home, the drumline musicians remained in the school practicing, just as they do on most weekends and holidays. In the near black studio, with their toms, snares and bass drums in practice form, they produced a beat that filled your ears and pounded on your chest, that had shivers crawling up your spine and wide-mouthed smiles glittering your face. Typical drumline style. But for China, the band is switching things up a bit. In addition to its usual funked up beat, the drumline will also be incorporating traditional Chinese culture out of respect for the country. The first number is a jasmine folk song where the cymbals will open up like a jasmine flower. Later, the band will “funk up the beat” for that same song. It will also be putting its stamp on a traditional lion dance, featuring a white lion.

“We’ll do what Sardis does best,” said Gagnon. “We’ll jack it up a bit and hopefully they’ll like it.” Gagnon is currently in negotiations with country officials for permission to play at the Great Wall of China, The Bund waterfront, and under the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. He also hopes to play at the Beijing Contemporary Music Academy. “It’s going to be a challenge to play in China because they don’t like crowds gathering,” he said. “But we’re working on it... hopefully we’ll make a name for ourselves

in China and be invited back.” Started by Gagnon four years ago, the drumline has been on quite a run. They’ve played the Olympics, major sporting events, several parades, were hired by the PNE, and more. Just this year the band was hired, at $3,500, to perform an after party for Seaspan after it was awarded an $8 billion ship-building contract. It was also hired by international tennis tournament the Davis Cup, also at $3,500, and by Holt Renfrew, at $1,000, over the

Christmas holidays to feature 12 drummers drumming. The band also performed in the Grey Cup parade, the Macy’s Day parade in Seattle, and in front of the Seattle Seahawks crowd. “The response to the band in North America has been phenomenal,” said Gagnon, who hopes to generate the same response in China. “We’re a unique band, and I’m looking forward to seeing the reaction we get in China, but you never know what kind of response you’ll get until you do it.”

With just over a month before departure, the band is in major fundraising mode. The cost per student is $2,000, plus cost of visas, cost of equipment cases and equipment preparations. A one-hour benefit concert is being held at Sardis secondary on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m., proceeds of which go 100 per cent to student travel costs. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the school. Sports Huskers hire coach The Chilliwack Huskers have hired a new head coach. The B.C. Football Conference team officially inked Tyson St. James late last week, filling the void left by the resignation of former bench boss Luke Acheson. St. James comes into the job with an impressive resume. Born in Nanaimo, he played his community football in Cloverdale/ Langley from 1984 to 1992, and was part of a provincial championship team in Westside in 1993. St. James played three years of BCFC football with the Abbotsford Air Force and was named a provincial all-star in his final season. He went on to a three year stint with the University of British Columbia, helping the Thunderbirds to a Vanier Cup national

championship in 1997. He was the winner of the JP Metras award in 1999 as the nation’s top collegiate lineman and earned all-Canadian status in 1998 and 1999. St. James was the first overall pick in the 2000 Canadian Football League draft, selected by Saskatchewan. From 2000-02 he was a defensive end and special teams player for the Roughriders. St. James occupied the same roles for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2003 and 2004. On the coaching side, St. James led the AAA Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers to the second round of the playoffs in 2009 and was the defensive line assistant for the Simon Fraser University Clansmen during their second NCAA season. HULBERT Braydin Ron Adam (Nov. 5, 1981 - Jan. 24, 2012) IN LOVING MEMORY Braydin passed peacefully in his mother’s arms Tuesday evening at Canucks place HULBERT children’s hospice after a long battle with a rare disorder (Hunter’s Syndrome). Braydin was our little warrior and shining light to all who met him and a messenger of unconditional love to his family. Braydin will be survived by his mother, Tabitha Hulbert; step-dad, Dan Dickau; baby sister, Hailey Hulbert; Papa, Adam Hulbert; Nana, Vera Mort; Grandma, Sandra Sewid; Uncle, Ronnie Sewid (children Tanisha and Kelly); father, Derick Weatherall; and many loving uncles, aunties, and cousins. Please in lieu of ﬂowers Braydin’s family has asked that donations be sent to Canucks Place Children’s Hospice.

KEY Frederick Bryce Aug, 7, 1937 - Jan. 22, 2012 Bryce passed away peacefully January 22, 2012 at Heritage Village Care Home in Chilliwack after a very long battle with an illness resulting from cancer in 1994. He spent most of his life living in Agassiz with his wife of 52 years Letty. Bryce was born August 7, 1937 in Arlee, Saskatchewan and moved to the Agassiz area with his family in 1943. He is survived by his wife Letty; sons: Dean (Anne), Daryl (Janet); and seven grandchildren, as well as his sisters and brothers: Ellen, Stewart (Doreen), Muriel (Mike), and Albert (Barb). Bryce was predeceased by his parents Agnes and Frederick. As well as being a devoted husband and father, Bryce was an avid fisherman and hunter. If he wasn’t fishing the Vedder River or fly-fishing any one of the lakes in BC or wandering

the hills hunting he was found at home enjoying his friends and family. Bryce spent the majority of his working years in the logging industry before retiring in 1994 due to his battle with cancer. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Heritage Village and especially the ladies in “Aquadel”. Also, special thanks to “Dr. Mac”, (Dr. MacIntosh) for his incredible care and support through all the years of Bryce’s illness. In lieu of ﬂowers a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation in Bryce’s name would be appreciated. A celebration of life in Bryce’s honor will be held at a future date. The family would like to express their gratitude for the many phone calls and ﬂowers already received.

On February 4, which will mark her 88th birthday, performing a random act of kindness would be a ﬁtting tribute to a woman who, over the years, lent a hand to so many in her community.

Knowing that she was loved and respected by her family and cherished by many dear SEEMAN friends, our Mom and Oma passed away in her home with family present and her beloved hymns playing softly by the bedside. Throughout her life she courageously dealt with the pain of many physical illnesses that challenged but neither deﬁned nor defeated her. Even during the last few months of her life her amazing memory for details was still strong. She was predeceased by husband Walter and son-inlaw Brian Leavitt. Broken hearted and still in disbelief that our “Miracle Mom” could really be gone are her children, Erika, Harry, (wife Karen and their children Kassidy and Logan), Rose McFarlane (husband Richard and children David, Jennifer and Kimberly), Hanna, Leavitt and Monica Soth. Very special thank you to her long time friend Marguerite Arnold for her kindness and to Dr. I. Morrison of Abbotsford for his compassionate medical care. Mom showed us by example that if you can’t get something done one way you have to rethink the situation and attack it from another. Her small stature did not stop her from rotary tilling her large “rock” garden into submission or from hoisting up a full size chain saw to make short work of a monstrous pine tree that fell in a windstorm over the driveway just missing the house. When the water pipes would freeze under the house she would get the propane torch and warm them until water would run freely again. As effective as she was with handling outdoor challenges her talents in the kitchen were the most appreciated! Her culinary delights included delicious soups, mouth-watering baking and the most amazing gravy and sauces. Preserving was a wonderful way to enjoy the bounty of her gardening efforts throughout the cooler months – she could preserve

July 29, 1945 - Jan. 12, 2012 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Olga Bernadette Vallee. She passed VALLEE away January 12, 2012 at Cascade Hospice in the presence of her sister Stella, brother-in-law John, daughter Maria and son Robert, after battling kidney cancer. Olga is survived by her partner Samuel (Tate) Campbell; sister, Stella; brother-inlaw, John and family; daughters, Maria (Darwin) and Sarah Mills; son Robert and Andrew Mills; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Margaret and James Guest and brother Basil. Olga was born in England and emigrated to Canada in 1970. She was an avid reader. She worked as the answering service for several years for Re/Max and was well liked by realtors and clients and frequently acknowledged for her efﬁciency and cheerful and helpful nature. She will be sadly missed and never forgotten. The family would like to thank Dr. LeGresley and the nursing staff on NU3 North, together with the staff at Cascade Hospice who all showed great compassion and kindness throughout this ordeal. A memorial service was held January 16, 2012 at Henderson’s Funeral Home.

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT/CORPORATE CLERK Cultus Lake Park is seeking a high-energy individual who works well under pressure and is a self-starter for the position of Executive Assistant/Corporate Clerk. Cultus Lake Park is a local government organization with jurisdiction over 640 acres located at the north/west part of Cultus Lake with resident population of about 1,000 people. Cultus Lake Park operations include those similar to an incorporated town (water and sewer systems, roads, parks, bylaw enforcement, etc.), with Park-operated businesses such as Sunnyside and Vedder River Campgrounds. The Executive Assistant/Corporate Clerk will provide high-level administrative support to the Chief Administrative Officer/Corporate Officer with responsibilities to elected officials. Required qualifications include: minimum five-years progressive experience as a Deputy City Clerk or equivalent experience; strong knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; superior computer literacy; proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, MS Publisher, MS Outlook and Internet; excellent communication skills both verbal and written, including letters and other correspondence; records management; ability to maintain confidentiality; and ability to handle situations with tact and diplomacy. Good working knowledge of the Community Charter and Local Government Act will be an asset. The successful candidate must have superior minute taking skills, and should have sound knowledge of Council / Board procedures. This is a non-union position with a starting wage of $28.57 per hour. The position works out of the Cultus Lake Park Office 35 hours per week. Hours of work will be from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and on a flexible basis to accommodate bi-monthly evening meetings.
