It was a decision that would change the gaming landscape in Chilliwack forever. Chilliwack Bingo Association members voted as a group to sell all their assets to Great Canadian Gaming Corporation for a cool $10 million in May. The reason for the keen corporate interest likely had something to do with the fact that Chilliwack Bingo logged the highest bingo revenues in the province, with an astounding $11.1 million in 2009-10, whereas Vancouver’s Planet Bingo came in second highest. The acquisition by Great Canadian Gaming, a publicly traded company, included the Chilliwack Bingo Hall on Knight Road, and the five-acre site on Olds Drive where the plan is to build a Community Gaming Centre in 2012. The sale also provides for trailing payments to be shared by local charity groups over the next 20 years from gaming centre revenues. Falls Golf Resort finds itself in the rough Robert Freeman The Progress The Falls Golf Resort located in Chilliwack’s eastern hillsides filed for bankruptcy protection in February. But the court proceedings were extended into January this year after a proposed sale of the resort to Pinnacle International Lands Inc. was defeated by a “vulture fund” called Streetwise Capital Partners Inc. In a Dec. 15 ruling, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Sewell extended a stay of proceedings to Jan. 31 and suspended the authorization of a PricewaterhouseCooper monitor to pursue sale of the property “without further order of this court.” The justice also directed the PWC monitor not to incur further costs “in relation to any restructuring transaction” prior to Jan. 5 without the consent of Streetwise and the Landus

Development Group, the largest single creditor at The Falls. The PWC monitor had argued against allowing Streetwise to vote using ballots it had obtained from creditors to defeat the Pinnacle bid, but the justice ruled in favor of Streetwise earlier in December. In that ruling, Sewell found

that Streetwise had not acted in “bad faith” as alleged by the PWC monitor, nor had Blackburn president Rick Wellsby intended to deceive creditors with misleading information contained in emails that urged them to support the Streetwise offer. “I accept his evidence that he genuinely believed that the

Streetwise proposal offered the best recovery to creditors and that he continued to hold that belief after I approved the Pinnacle (restructuring plan),” Sewell said. In September, Sewell had approved Pinnacle’s $15-million bid to buy the hillside resort, giving creditors until Nov. 30 to accept or reject the offer. According to a monitor’s report, the “Landus Group” (consisting of Landus Development Group Inc. and Home Equity Development Inc.) is the single largest creditor with total claims exceeding $23 million. Blackburn’s total debt had spiralled up to $64 million when it filed for bankruptcy protection, according to a monitor’s report, including $125,725 in taxes owed to the City of Chilliwack. The PWC monitor, who has effectively controlled the resort’s operations since February, was tasked with ensuring the

It’s been a huge year for those waiting for the Chilliwack Health Contact Centre project come to fruition. An offer to purchase a property on Young Road was inked by the province in January, and it was rezoned in March. “This is a chance for Chilliwack to show the rest of the Lower Mainland how to do it right,” said PCRS addictions manager Lee Anne Hanson the night of the rezoning hearing at city hall. The vision is to establish a 24-unit residential facility with “wrap-around” services for those with mental health issues and addictions, but also walk-in health care services for “patient orphans,” who are people without a family doctor. The idea all along has focused on a continuum of services available under one roof, from housing services to some form of medical care to court advocacy, employment and rental assistance programs. The location is a former Days Inn Motel on Young Road at Hocking. Denis Turco Architect Inc. of Vancouver designed the addition and building alterations, and Mierau Contracting of Abbotsford will be doing the construction. Update: Ground-breaking on the project should be early in the new year and they expect to be in the building by next fall. There’s a hitch, however. Although the project has been supported by the province to the tune of $3.3 million to date for capital funding, as of last week, there wasn’t enough contact centre operating funds to hire the staff needed to realize the lofty goals they’ve set out. “My hope is that BC Housing or Fraser Health is still going to come to the table on this,” Hanson said. “A building without services is just a tenancy arrangement, but a building with services creates a community home environment.” They’ll need an estimated $500,000 to offer what they’ve been promising, she said. So at this point they are not in a position to offer around-the-clock supervision or services outside of business hours. “Our biggest fear is not being able to fully realize the vision. “Everyone is expecting this to solve some of our problems, so we need more operating dollars to provide the best service we can for people who really need our help.”

Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl brought down the curtain in March on a long and remarkable political career. And was promptly hit by a storm of controversy when his son Mark sought and won the Conservative nomination for the upcoming federal election. NDP opponents charged Strahl with creating a political “dynasty” in the riding that he’d held since he was first elected as a Reform Party MP in 1993. Conservative candidates had only about a week to organize nomination campaigns, and even some party members called the process a “mockery of democracy” that cast a shadow on Strahl’s otherwise sterling reputation. But party officials in Ottawa explained that the “drastically-

reduced” nomination period in Chilliwack, and two other ridings where Conservative MPs had decided not to run, was caused by the need to get candidates in place for the federal election. Mark Strahl won the Chilliwack nomination over a single challenger, Ernie Charlton, by a comfortable vote margin of 144 to 77.

Touted at one point as a rival of Stephen Harper’s for leadership of the New Conservative party, the elder Strahl eventually stepped aside from the race but continued to support MP Tony Clement for the leadership. Yet he was still entrusted by Prime Minister Harper with several high-profile cabinet positions, including Indian Affairs. This show of respect came even though Strahl had once led a group of dissident Reform MPs who sat as an independent caucus in parliament, and talked about an alliance with “red” Tory, former Prime Minister Joe Clark. Sept. 10, 2009. Police estimate the owner of that grow-op was making $1.8 million every three months. Police investigators basically stumbled upon the grow-op while investigating an even larger, more sophisticated, underground bunker-style operation next door where 11,500 marijuana plants were found. The owner of that grow-op, valued by police at over $3-million, has also never been found. A 61-year-old man was arrested at the site, however, and was charged with production of marijuana for trafficking purposes.

Five of the six workers caught in the second-largest marijuana grow-op bust ever made by Chilliwack RCMP were sentenced to 12 months under house arrest by a provincial court judge in April. One of the six received a longer, 18-month conditional sentence, because of an earlier marijuana conviction. Judge Jill Rounthwaite said conditional sentences are considered a “slap on the wrist” by the public, but she called these “significant” in their terms and in the possibility of going to jail, if

the conditions are breached. The terms include a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, 25 hours of community service work, and a ban on possessing high-intensity light bulbs or other marijuana grow equipment. The judge also took into consideration the guilty pleas entered by the six, which saved the court the costs of a trial, and their low-level status in the grow operation. The owner of the grow-op has never been found. The six testified that they were paid $10 an hour to clip and water the 4,776 marijuana plants that police found in two out-buildings of the Nixon Road property on

The mall parking lots are filled to the capacity for which they’ve been designed. The data lines to credit card companies are humming to the tune of more than $28 billion in Canadian retail sales in December. Shoppers wearied from all that spending fill the food courts and benches. But in our frantic pursuit of Boxing Day bargains, we often overlook the one item that won’t strain our budget or tax our patience for lines at the checkout counter. Our time. Each of us has an annual time account of 8,760 hours. That’s more than half a million minutes. While a certain amount of that time must be alloted to sleeping, eating and earning a living, there’s still plenty to spare. Time to spend with family and friends. Time to help out in the community, volunteering with organizations that bring comfort and assistance to those in need or less fortunate. Time to lend a hand on the sidelines and benches of kids sports teams, teaching young people valuable lessons of camaraderie and sportsmanship that will stay with they their whole lives. Time to lead a troop of scouts or girl guides. Time to cook a meal or weed the garden for a lonely senior. Time to give a shelter dog a respite from its cage with a noon hour walk or to help the staff with cleaning and feeding the animals. Time to make the world a cleaner place by helping to clean a ravine or count salmon swimming upstream to spawn. Time to open a door for someone whose arms are laden with parcels. Time to wish a stranger a Merry Christmas. The gift of time is, well, timeless. It doesn’t require batteries or complicated instructions. And, best of all, it doesn’t cost money. Change and upheaval marked this year So what were the most newsworthy stories in 2011? From disasters, to politics, to events at home and abroad, one word seems it sum it up: Upheaval. It defined both the Legislature and the House of Commons. Christie Clark dumped her daytime gig with CKNW for some knuckledusting as premier. It’s been a bit of a punch-up ever since with the dumping of the HST, a re-think about a quick election, the scattering of some MLA’s, Barry Penner among them, an upcoming bad news budget, and in December a survey by Forum Research Inc., putting NDP leader Adrian Dix ahead in the approval rating with 37 per cent while Clark is at 29 per cent approval and new Conservative leader John Cummins with 23 per cent. A November Angus Reid poll put voting intentions for NDP at 40

per cent, the Liberals 31 per cent, the B.C. Conservatives at 18 per cent. In May Prime Minister Harper got handed his dream, the majority card, at the federal election. But it was Jack Layton who captured hearts and minds. The NDP nearly Margaret tripled their seat EVANS count and with 103 seats they became the nation’s Official Opposition. But at the pinnacle of his career, Layton was struck down by cancer as, in August, a stunned and saddened nation grieved at his state funeral. Overseas, the world was shaking, literally, in Japan where on

March 11th it experienced a 9.0 magnitude megathrust earthquake, the largest ever in the country and among the five largest quakes in the world since 1900. Tsunami waves reached heights of 40 metres. It shifted earth’s axis, changed the length of the day as the Earth’s rotation sped up, and moved parts of northeast Japan eastward, making its landmass wider. There were 15,842 death, 5,890 were injured and 3,485 people missing. In February, we were horrified by news of the slaughter of dogs in Whistler. In June, the hockey riot shamed Vancouver. In July, the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, aka Will and Kate, charmed the nation, and in the fall the disgruntled against corporate Canada went on a Occupy rant. The economy ticked along then

got caught up in the roller coaster ride of the last few months. It was a protectionist attitude toward the economy that became Harper’s excuse for pulling Canada out of the Kyoto Accord at the climate conference in Durban earlier in December Upheavals continued abroad starting in January with what became known as the Arab spring of discontent. Tunisians took up the disruptive cause with the ousting of their President after demonstrations incited by high unemployment, food costs, and corruption. Other Middle Eastern countries followed including Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Jordan, Bahrain, with one of the bloodiest being Libya and the killing of Muammah Gaddafi. In a brazen attack, Osama bin Laden was killed in May in Pakistan by U.S. special ops. But that hardly

Ryder Lake murder mystery Robert Freeman The Progress The family of Karver Morford stepped forward to plead for anyone with information about their son’s murder to call police. “We know we can’t bring him back,” his mother Judy told The Progress in an interview last September. “But someone must know something, even if it’s just who could be capable of such an act. Morford’s father Jim said it would take a “particular kind of person” to commit such a brutal crime. “It was a home invasion, and it was brutal, absolutely brutal,” he said. Police investigators are not releasing details of the crime, to protect the integrity of their investigation. But what is known is that Morford, 35, lived a quiet life in a secluded house in Ryder Lake. Why anyone would want to hurt their son, a gentle man who enjoyed his privacy but was wellregarded by all who met him is “unfathomable” to the family. And for anyone to think that Karver was up to anything illegal in his secluded Ryder Lake home, or that he somehow deserved what happened to him, Judy said, grappling for words, “that’s so ...” “Wrong,” said Jade, finishing his mother’s sentence. Jade said while his brother “liked his priva-

cy,” he had formed “solid bonds” with the friends he did make. Karver left school and shied away from socializing after he was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was fourteen years old. Over the following years he kept busy “reinventing” himself as a cowboy in Ashcroft and a logger in Kitimat, but he returned to live in the Chilliwack area where he enjoyed the outdoor life and keeping up with his friends. “He was always keen on keeping up with what other people he had known were up to, and was fond of reminiscing

about the adventures he’d had with everyone along the way,” his mother recalled in a memorial tribute. “He had what he once called a ‘photogenic’ memory of the people and events in his life, and what he didn’t remember he was still quite handy at making up,” she said. “No one has the right to take someone else’s life, and especially not to just get away with it,” she said. “As his family, friends, and community, we can only carry on by doing all we can to help, and by believing that justice will someday be served.” rfreeman@theprogress.com twitter.com/paperboy2

Flooded farmers want berm shored up Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It was an extraordinarily long freshet with serious consequences that led to flooded farms and sandbagged homes. About 15 property owners outside the municipal diking system suffered crop losses and seepage when the Fraser River broke through a berm on the northern tip of Chillliwack during the 2011 spring freshet. Localized flooding of fields ensued and water levels stayed alarmingly high into the summer. A high-stream advisory was issued from the BC River Forecast Centre in July, which was uncharacteristically late. Officials said water

levels hadn’t been that high that late in the season since the 1920s. The high water was caused in part by heavy rains in the north. A shifting scour hole is to blame for eating away the rip rap of the river bank. City reps made it clear repeatedly that property owners living behind the “orphaned” berm built by the province in 1997 were responsible for any flood and erosion impacts themselves. There was no level of government deemed responsible for any maintenance of the gravel berm after it was built. But despite this, city crews and volunteers undertook an emergency program of flood work, sandbagging and road work to mitigate or prevent some of the damage.

The 35-acre hazelnut farm owned by John and Hanne van den Brink was devastated by the flooding. The blueberry farm owned by Buhd and Amarjit Gill was similarly hit hard, and sump pumps drained the water from their house. Crops of hazelnuts and blueberries were eventually lost after languishing in water. City officials received word from Emergency Management BC that no provincial money would be available to protect farmland outside a protected diked area, but a new report has been sent, requesting feedback and funding. But EMBC said funding could only be supported if there was “an imminent threat” to the east dike from the 2011 Freshet, and there was an expectation that costs would be shared with the municipality. Update: A working group of city reps, impacted property owners and provincial officials have been in discussions about what can be done to prevent the flooding from happening again. Property owners recently approached the city to urge them to repair the berm, even temporarily before the next freshet hits in a few months. Mitigation works could cost an estimated $1.1 million to $5.1 million, according to a report by city consultants, and the local property owners have asked to have the more costly option considered because it offers full bank protection.

Country mourns loss of Betty Fox The Progress A Chilliwack icon and Canadian hero died this past summer. Betty Fox, mother of the late Terry Fox and longtime cancer crusader, passed away on June 17 from gastrointestinal bleeding. News that Betty was seriously ill first broke two weeks prior to her death. However, media reports that stated she had cancer were incorrect. While the Fox family did not immediately disclose Betty’s illness, they did post a statement on the Fox Foundation website notifying the world that Betty was seriously ill. On the morning of June 17, a second statement was posted

on the website. “Betty ... passed away peacefully surrounded by love,” the statement read. She was 73. For more than 30 years Betty was the fireball behind the Terry Fox Run and later the foundation, encouraging, inspiring, pushing the world to continue her son’s dream of eradicating cancer. She quit her job, traveled the world, listened to stories, shed tears, shaved her head, and was selected to be a flag bearer among other Canadian celebrities for the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics – all in the name of her son. For many, Betty Fox was not just a cancer crusader, she was a hero. When news of her illness

came out, numerous messages of hope and thanks were posted to the Terry Fox Foundation website. Her funeral, held on June 25 in Port Coquitlam, attracted so many mourners, a second location was opened where the funeral proceedings were viewed via video streaming. The University of the Fraser Valley continued to expand its reaches this year. In September, the post-secondary institution launched a new faculty of health sciences department. The new department combined existing programs from the kinesiology and physical education department with those from the school of health sciences department into one faculty. The university intends to grow the department with more health care programs in the future. “Over the years we expect the number of programs we have will grow, resources permitting,” Eric Davis, UFV provost and vice president academic told The Progress in an interview earlier this year. “This new faculty is creating the foundation.” At a press conference held at the Chilliwack campus in September, the move was described as a way of creating a more dynamic faculty that would be easier for prospective students to navigate through the university’s health care programs. “It makes tremendous sense – students won’t have to search through more than one department any more; it will all be located in one place,” said Davis. As well, a faculty of health sciences creates more opportunities for teaching and research, and is an attraction for medical professionals around the world. And by having a health sciences department, it is hoped that more medical professionals will set up shop in the Fraser Valley – a region growing with the senior population. Included in the faculty of health sciences is the bachelor of kinesiology degree, bachelor of science in nursing degree, practical nursing certificate, health care assistant certificate, certified dental assistant certificate, and a dental hygiene diploma. The faculty of health sciences will be located on the Chilliwack campus at the Canada Education Park starting May 2012.

Survey offers insight into teens

espite much of the gloomy news we hear about families these days, evidence from the McCreary Center BC Adolescent Health Survey (AHS) suggests things may not be as bad as sometimes conjectured. The survey results, which include responses from thousands of young people across BC, can be broken down by region. Rob It found that LEES 91% of youth in the area from Surrey to Hope report living with their mom most of the time and 70% with their dad. Despite relatively stable high divorce rates, only 5% of youth in this region are living with a stepfather most of the time and 1 % with a stepmother. This suggests that most kids have some stability in their relationships growing up. Of course, these figures only refer to who kids live with, not the quality of those relationships. It is concerning though that only 70% of kids live most of the time with their dads. This means that 30% of BC high school aged youth living between Surrey and Hope don’t live most of the time with their dad. In most cases father absence is not good for young people, or for society. Of course, dads that don’t live most of the time with their kids can still play an enormously impactful positive role. in the oil patch, logging camp or in the military. However, there is a sense that there are far too many young people living without influence from fathers. I’ve recently been involved with a research project about violence towards women. We’ve been studying the Ann Davis Transition Services in Chilliwack to see if what they are doing is progressive and leading practice in their field. While the findings are preliminary, what we’ve found is that while remaining true to its core commitment to supporting women, Ann Davis Services has a growing outreach towards the transformation of men. Since men are the main perpetrators of violence in relationships there is awareness that prevention and healing must involve them. Many victims too report wanting help for the offender. This growing emphasis, services for men, highlights the issue of what men offer in family relations. My own anecdotal experience

is that the young dads of the new generation are much more egalitarian and involved than men of my generation and the generation before me. Another concern arising from the survey is that 8 % of the young people report having no parent at home when they wake up and 4% having no parent at home when they go to bed. Ten percent (10%) of the youth reported going to bed hungry because there was not enough money to buy food. It is no surprise that youth reporting they went to bed hungry are also less likely to report having good health, more likely to have considered suicide and had low levels of extra curricular activities. Poverty has a pervasive negative effect on the lives of these young people. Another interesting tidbit from the AHS survey results in the Surrey to Hope report is the number of young people speaking a language

Hockey switcheroo brings Chiefs back to Wack

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress The departure of the Chilliwack Bruins and resurrection of the Chilliwack Chiefs was unquestionably the top sports story of 2011. The Western Hockey League Bruins spent five mediocre seasons in the Fraser Valley before moving to Victoria in the summer. Attendance had trended steadily downward in those five years, and around Christmas time in 2010 rumours started circulating about a potential relocation. The team didn’t have a lease at Prospera Centre for the coming season, and team president Darryl Porter was said to have clandestinely met Victoria real estate magnate Graham Lee on a B.C. Ferry. There was too much smoke for there not to be a fire. Porter issued wishywashy denials that did little to comfort local fans. WHL commissioner Ron Robison issued stronger denials, but his use of phrases like ‘at this time,’ and the knowledge that the league badly wanted a team on Vancouver Island made fans uneasy. When the relocation became official early in the off-season, no one could truthfully say they were surprised. The five men that comprised the Bruins ownership group were split down the middle. Porter, Brian Burke and Glen Sather were in favour of selling and relocating the team. Moray Keith and Jim Bond went public with their desire to buy the team and keep it in Chilliwack. As owners and operators of Prospera Centre under the Chiefs Development Group

banner, they had a keen interest in keeping the Bruins as their main tenant. Their efforts failed, and moving vans arrived soon after. With Grinch-like thoroughness, they removed every trace of the Western Hockey League team, including the video screens hanging above center ice. For a few weeks, local fans were left to wonder what would replace the Bruins. The displaced ECHL Victoria Salmon Kings were one possibility. The BCHL was another. There was even outlandish talk of the American Hockey League putting a second franchise in the Fraser Valley. In the end, the most sensible option won out. After some tough negotiating, the BCHL approved the sale and relocation of the Quesnel Millionaires to Chilliwack. Junior A hockey was back, and with the Chiefs came locally revered hockey guru Harvey Smyl, architect of three BCHL championship teams. While Smyl tackled the tall task of turning the sad sack Mills into a winner, new president Glen Ringdal proved to be the perfect antidote for the abrasive Porter era, smoothing things over on the business side. On opening night, Sept. 24, the Chiefs brought back Chief Wannawin and smacked the Penticton Vees 7-1 in front of 3,124 happy fans. On the ice, Smyl turned over most of the roster, retaining only six players from the 201011 Millionaires. Skilled forwards like David Bondra, Trevor

Hills and 16-year-old Garrett Forster were added up front. Twenty-year-old Ty Miller was acquired to anchor the defence and Ontario native Mitch Gillam took the reigns as the number one netminder. Fast for ward 31 games to the present and the Chiefs find themselves sitting third in the Interior conference standings with a

19-10-0-2 record. The team is an impressive 11-3-0-1 at home, playing an entertaining and energetic brand of hockey. “The performance of the team on the ice this year has been nothing short of spectacular and well above what we might have expected before Harvey and his assistants weaved their magic,” Ringdal said of the Chiefs surprising

start. “To be challenging for number two in our conference at this point is very exciting. Going forward, we absolutely expect to be in the running for the RBC Cup every year from now on.” The team the Chiefs replaced, the Chilliwack Bruins/Victoria Royals, have continued to struggle in their new home. The Royals come into the Christmas break

13-20-2-2, fourth in the B.C. division and seventh in the Western conference. Ex-Bruin fan favourite Kevin Sundher has been a bright spot in Victoria. Recently signed to a National Hockey League entry-level deal with the Buffalo Sabres, Sundher leads the Royals with 21 goals and 55 points in 35 games. Robin Soudek has 17

goals and 34 points in 33 games. Jamie Crooks has 17 goals and 33 points in 37 games and Chilliwack native Jesse Pauls has added three goals and 11 points in 23 games from the defence. To be fair, the Royals are in a rebuilding year, breaking in several 16 and 17-year-olds. The Royals started out with strong attendance at the Save-OnFoods Centre, but as the team’s fortunes have dipped, so has interest. More than 7,000 showed up for a Dec. 9 game against Lethbridge, but prior to that the team went four games averaging between 4,400-4,600 fans. In Chilliwack, the Chiefs have averaged 1,982 fans per game. That sounds under whelming when compared to the 3,357 the Bruins averaged in their last year here, but the Chiefs attendance is actually the highest among Canadian junior A clubs. “The appreciation for good hockey in Chilliwack is evident in the attendance numbers we have experienced in the first half of the season,” Ringdal observed. “With just under 2,000 fans per game, we are - by several hundred fans per game - number one in attendance in the BCHL and we are right on target for our first year plan.” Long-term, Ringdal sees the Chiefs as a flagship franchise in Canadian junior A hockey, one that will set the bar on and off the ice. “Many fans have told us how happy they are that the Chiefs are back and there seems to be a genuine feeling that the Chiefs belong to Chilliwack,” he said. “Our owners have made it clear that the Chiefs are here to stay as long as the hockey fans want them. We are fully expecting to see our attendance rise to an average 2,500 and even to over 3,000 in coming years as we continue to provide the kind of hockey experience our fans want and deserve. “

Chilliwack Minor baseball’s mosquito AAA squad gathered at Fairfield Island in September for a special moment. In August, the team won the tier-one provincials and one month later they hung a banner at their home diamond. Provincials were held in Richmond, and the Cougars went 3-0 out of the gate with wins over Surrey (7-5), Nanaimo (7-3) and Ladner (13-2). ● In May, a Fraser Valley Volleyball Club team that included three Chilliwack boys took provincial and national titles at the U-14 level. The FVVC Blues travelled to Saskatoon where they won nine straight matches to take the Volleyball Canada Canadian Open championship. The team went 6-0 in round-robin play, beating the Prince Albert Smashing Bananas, Sherwood Park and Winnipeg’s Cardinal Club on day one. They beat

PAC’s senior squad finished first. The youth team placed second and the mini team placed third, giving the locals a combined score good enough to win the championship. It was an outstanding achievement given the level of competition and the American pow-

erhouses they had to overcome. ● Alec Janssens had a great year in speed skating, winning the Junior National Championship in the 3000 metre and qualifying for the World Junior Championship in Finland. Janssens represented Canada in the mass start race at the World Cup final in the Netherlands, won a Canada Cup championship in Quebec City and earned five other podium finishes on the Canada Cup circuit. ● Chilliwack’s Zachary Clay claimed a provincial title in HP junior vault at the Provincial Artistic Gymnastics Championships in April, adding silver on bars and bronze on floor and rings. Chilliwack’s Jessica Gibson (P3 tyro) won silver on floor and was part of a first place team. In P5 novice, Chilliwack’s Marquita Morison won gold on vault and bronze on the beam and floor.

Sports While Roman Horak made NHL inroads in 2011, two former Chilliwack Bruins said goodbye to North American pro hockey. After spending five seasons bouncing between the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and the American Hockey League’s Manchester Monarchs, Oscar Moller went back to Sweden. He has 19 points in 30 games for Skelleftea HC of the Swedish Elite League. Moller’s former linemate, Mark Santorelli, left the Nashville Predators farm system for Sweden, signing with second-division club Tingsryds AIF.
