Government shelter funds not needed in Chilliwack Robert Freeman The Progress

Food bank use climbs amid slow recovery Katie Bartel, Jeff Nagel The Progress More B.C. residents are turning to local food banks to help make ends meet. Nearly 95,000 people in the province used food banks in March, up five per cent from a year earlier, the national Hunger Count survey by Food Banks Canada shows. In Chilliwack, the Salvation Army counted an eight per cent increase in the amount of people using the soup kitchen in the month of October this year from last year; a 13 per cent increase in the amount of peo-

ple requiring Christmas hampers this year from last year; and a 46 per cent increase in the amount of families the Salvation Army now assists. “We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of families requiring food hampers, clothing and household goods,” said Ian Pratt, community ministries director with the Chilliwack Salvation Army. “It’s a terrible time for people right now. The economy was so bad and many people are not able to earn a livable wage. They’re getting paid $8 an hour and are having to spend all their money on rent – they can’t

afford other necessities.” The increased demands are stretching food banks thin. Many B.C. food banks this year reported having to take unusual steps to meet the growing demand – such as cutting their hamper size, contacting other food banks for help or making special public appeals for donations. “Very few have said they’ve turned people away, or closed early or not opened,” said Marilyn Herrmann, a director on Food Banks B.C. “We’re all trying very hard to keep those things from happening.” Also notable, Herrmann said,

is an increase in the number of two-parent families coming for food, in contrast with the stereotype of a single parent struggling to feed the kids. The annual Hunger Count found 11 per cent of B.C. recipients are working and earning a pay cheque but still need support. Forty-four per cent are on social assistance. Another 6.2 per cent of those assisted in B.C. were seniors and 19.5 per cent were aboriginal. Children make up 30 per cent of those who benefit. Continued: DEPOTS/ p11

While other Fraser Valley communities are getting extra funding to shelter the homeless during extreme weather conditions, Chilliwack hasn’t yet seen the need, Ian Pratt, the Salvation Army’s community ministries director, said Monday. “We don’t participate in the BC Cold Weather program,” he said. “We haven’t found the need yet.” No one has been turned away from the Salvation Army’s shelter located behind the Care and Share Centre on Yale Road, he said. “We always meet the demand,” he said. The Salvation Army shelter open 24/7 has 11 permanent beds, and room for about 10 more on foam mats. Pratt said if needed, more homeless people could also be sheltered at the Salvation Army’s other facilities in Chilliwack. B.C. Housing Minister Rich Coleman announced Friday the government will provide $800,000 this year to fund the extreme weather spaces. Hope will get funding for 20 additional shelter spaces and Mission will get funding for up to 15 more spaces when extreme weather alerts are issued. It’s up to communities to decide when an alert is issued. Environment Canada is predicting lows of -8 Tuesday and -7 Wednesday, with snow or rain returning mid-week as temperatures climb. Meteorologist David Jones said the cold and wind caused by dense arctic air “slipping south” is not unusual, “but it is a bit early in the season.” There were 98 homeless people counted in Chilliwack during a two-day survey in 2008. Twenty were counted in Hope during the same survey, 12 in Agassiz, 100 in Mission and 235 in Abbotsford.

Government moves to address vet concerns: Strahl But local veterans call changes ‘a smoke screen’ Katie Bartel The Progress Legislative changes to the New Veterans Charter Act is a starting point in addressing criticisms raised by veterans and their families with the current charter, said Chilliwack MP Chuck Strahl. The changes, which were introduced by the federal government last week, include establishing a minimum pre-tax income of $40,000 a year for veterans who can no longer work; expanding eligibility for monthly allowances for seriously injured veterans up to $1,609 a month; introducing an additional $1,000 monthly supplement for seriously injured and ill veterans;

and creating more options for the disability award payout. “I have sympathy for those people who say that Veterans Affairs has not responded quickly to our veterans needs, especially to our newest veterans,” said Strahl. “It’s a fair comment. Veterans Affairs has been slow to react to the new realities.” But the changes, Strahl said, would make the charter significantly better than it’s been since it was legislated in 2006. The disability award, which was a spot of contention for veterans, is currently a one-time, lump-sum settlement for soldiers injured in the line of duty. If adopted, the legislative changes would provide

soldiers with three payout options instead of one: They could continue to have it paid out in one lump sum payment; could choose to have it paid out in annual payments spread out over a number of years of their choice; or split it up and have a portion of the settlement paid out in one sum and the rest paid out in annual payments over a number of years of their choice. “We’re giving our veterans more options,” said Strahl. And because the New Veterans Charter is a living document, more changes could be made. “This charter is four years old, we know there are wrinkles here, but we think we’ve started to address some of the issues,” said Strahl. “We know there will always

be new things for us to learn and we are open to more changes.” Although the proposed changes were the culmination of six months worth of collaborating with government officials, members of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association, the fact that it came out just a week and a half following the Veterans Day of Protest on Nov. 6 has some veterans questioning government motives. “In my opinion, it is one of the biggest smoke screens put out by Veterans Affairs Canada tailored to appease the electorate,” said Claude Latulippe, retired Canadian Air Force Captain. “The government is hoping we’ll go away, but we’re not going away, it’s not going to happen, not this time.”

W HITE C HRISTMAS

Latulippe doesn’t see much improvement with the proposal. The widows’ tax wasn’t addressed. The clawback on veterans’ pensions wasn’t addressed. The reduction of military pensions at the age of 65 wasn’t addressed. And the changes to the disability award weren’t what the veterans had asked for. They wanted the monthly disability pension restored, he said. “If the government was really serious about making changes, they would order a royal commission on Veterans Affairs Canada,” said Latulippe. “Let’s have somebody in the know put the facts on the table and come out with recommendations that the government will commit to implement.” kbartel@theprogress.com

Stopping teen exploitation takes active prevention, says RCMP Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

Beefing up security against goat theft Robert Freeman The Progress Goat theft is on the rise in Chilliwack, and the RCMP is advising goat owners to beef up security and do regular head counts. “The sooner owners are aware that a theft has occurred, the more likely we are to make a recovery,”

RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. Six of seven goats stolen Thursday from a farm on Ballam Road were later found on a Langley farm by the Chilliwack RCMP’s crime reduction unit. Wolbeck said a tip from the public led police to the farm, and pictures of the Chilliwack goats provided by

the owner and identification tags matched the six goats at the farm. No charges have been led yet as the investigation continues. Goat owner Susan Barker said a recent shortage of goats, plus the rising popularity of the low-cholesterol meat and its demand in ethnic communities is driving prices

- and their value to thieves upwards. But she said the seven goats stolen from a neighbour’s farm were not intended for the meat market, but for milking. The fact that the goats were medicated is also “a huge concern,” she said. Continued: GOATS/ p7

In the wake of a teenage girl arrested last week for sex-trade recruiting, Chilliwack RCMP have released key information for parents and kids on how to protect themselves from predators. Asked if it’s become common for police officers to use Craigslist to find criminal activity, Const. Tracy Wolbeck said she couldn’t speak to any specific examples other than the particular complaint received by Chilliwack RCMP recently. “It’s something we will definitely use as an investigational tool, if there is something criminal happening,” Wolbeck said. The complaint in question led to the arrest last week of a 14-year-old girl and a 51-year-old man from Chilliwack. The online ad, which recruited other youth into the sex trade, was allegedly posted by the teen while posing as an adult, in the erotic services section of Craigslist. The male suspect was charged with two counts of sexual assault. The teen, who will not be named, was charged with procuring for the purposes of prostitution. Police said Craigslist officials cooperated fully with the investigation, and the ad was removed. “The best starting point for this type of prevention education is conversation,” said Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop in a release that contained tips from the RCMP. The early signs of sexual exploitation of youth can be jarring changes in behaviour or attitude, as well as new routines, clothing or lingo. The teen

They can almost taste it. With less than $35,000 needed to reach the $5-million fundraising goal for CGH redevelopment and expansion project, the finish line is finally in sight for local fundraisers. “We’re very excited to be reaching our target, and the whole project is supposed to be finishing up this winter, said Vicki Raw, executive director of the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation’s Campaign for Health Care Excellence. There is one big push set for the morning of Dec. 1 with the

annual Make it Happen Breakfast at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel, to benefit the Foundation’s A Campaign for Health Care Excellence. It’s a by-donation event, minimum suggested $10, with breakfast starting at 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Hawk radio will be on-site even earlier to set up an early morning drive-through and broadcast location. Improvements have been ongoing since 2008 at Chilliwack General Hospital during a multiphased $35-million redevelopment project that includes a major ER expansion, new ambulatory care facilities and a new lab and lobby. Details to do with the new

entrance and lobby are being finalized now. Aside from the Make it Happen breakfast, there’s also a chance to donate the night before, on Tuesday night at the Coast. “We’re adding the element of tree lighting, said Raw. At $5 per bulb, it will function as a form of visual barometer as to how the Campaign’s fundraising is going. All proceeds from the Coast fundraisers are going to the CGH project. Plans are also in the works for February to schedule a dual celebration to mark the completion of the CGH expansion and renovation, and 100 years of CGH history in 2011. jfeinberg@theprogress.com

Stehiyaq healing centre struggling to get referrals However, they are having difficulty getting new referrals for the centre, which come from the ministry and delegated agencies. “But we know the need is strong,” Pennier said. Only four young ladies are currently in residence in the Stehiyaq cabins, with a total of nine expected by month’s end, said Penner. The problem is they have capacity for a total of 20 clients, at the Stehiyaq site more than 30 kilometres east of the Vedder Bridge along Chilliwack Lake Road. Pennier was asked if the sticking point was mainly one of public relations. “It’s more about getting the necessary information about us to the Ministry (MCFD) and agency staff, who are responsible for children and youth,” Pennier replied. “If they find they have kids with issues that need the kind of treatment we offer, they should be aware there is a

The Progress A healing centre for aboriginal youth with addictions and childhood trauma is struggling to raise its public profile. The Stehiyaq Healing and Wellness Village opened last summer on a remote property in the Chilliwack River Valley that once housed a youth detention centre, said Clarence Pennier, president of the Stehiyaq Aboriginal Healing Society, and the Sto:lo Tribal Society. Penner said he wanted to help and became personally involved with the Stehiyaq board early on, in part due to his own family’s battle with addiction issues. The new facility didn’t actually start accepting any clients until the summer, even though the grand opening was last spring. To date it’s been mostly teenage girls receiving treatment, ranging in age from 13 to 17, from a range of First Nations across B.C.

B.C. police forces will recalibrate all their handheld breathalyzers so they only register a warn reading resulting in tougher roadside impoundments at a blood alcohol level of 0.06. B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police chair Jamie Graham said Friday the change will provide a buffer to ensure any error in roadside breathalyzer tests don’t trigger unfair penalties against drivers who actually have a blood alcohol level of just under 0.05. Until all 2,200 devices are recalibrated – expected to take 10 days – police won’t issue longer roadside suspensions to drivers who blow a warn. Graham said the change comes “out of an abundance of caution” so motorists close to the line get the benefit of the doubt. RCMP tests found the breathalyzers could be off by up to one per cent. Since Sept. 20, police have issued more than 3,000 roadside suspensions and impoundments as a result of the tougher administrative penalties, many for drivers who blew in the warn range. The new rules brought a minimum three-day driving ban, a $200 administrative penalty and a $500 licence reinstatement fee for drivers caught in the warn range. Cars can also be impounded for three days and drivers can be billed for towing and storage – without ever exceeding the 0.08 legal limit. The penalties confused many motorists who wondered if they could be harshly penalized after just one drink with dinner, and restaurants and bars complained of an immediate drop in sales. Stolen goats prompt warning

5-09F CF1

GOATS from p3 Meat and dairy products from goats is tested before it goes to market, but the black market trade could result in meat dangerous for human consumption. Barker said 11 pregnant goats were stolen earlier from her farm by determined thieves who cut through a six-foot chainlink fence and hiked through a thicket of blackberry bushes to break into her barn. Then they had to drag the goats weighing at least 150 lbs each back to the truck. “To me, it has to be the work of more than one person,” she said. Barker said it’s probably too late to recover her goats, but she warned other owners to tighten security, and for anyone seeing suspicious activity around a goat farm to “please call the police.” rfreeman@theprogress.com

New depots opening The slow economic recovery is being felt in the Lower Mainland, but the impact is worst in Interior areas such as Revelstoke, Salmon Arm and 100 Mile House. “The rural food banks are being hit so, so hard,” Hermann said. “Many industries and businesses are shutting down and many of their donors are now becoming clients of the food banks.” Even affluent areas are experiencing higher demand in part because of the higher cost of housing. “We’ve seen a 10 per cent increase in the Greater Vancouver catchment area,” said Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society CEO Cheryl Carline. The society runs 16 depots ser ving Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore but is considering opening new ones in what Carline calls non-traditional areas. “Our depot on the North Shore is growing and we may have to look at another one in that area,” Carline said. Another may open on Vancouver’s wealthier west side. Carline said volunteers are now bracing for a surge in clients as the holiday season nears. “We’re heading into the cold and wet and difficult time of year, so usually we see some of those numbers swell at Christmas,” she said. Nationally, 867,000 people used food banks in March, a nine per cent increase from a year earlier. The high cost of justice

The Chilliwack

Progress

R AESIDE

It’s an obscenity – exceeded only by the obscenity of the crimes and the man who committed them. The revelation this week that the costs of bringing serial-killer Robert Pickton to justice have topped $100 million should outrage each and every B.C. taxpayer. According to figures released Monday by the Ministry of the Attorney General, the police investigation, trial and costs of apprehending, trying and convicting the serial killer amount to $102.8 million since 2001. And that isn’t counting more than $30 million more in RCMP costs picked up by the federal government, or the price of Pickton’s failed appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. The latest figures reveal that we, the taxpayers, forked over $11.7 million to his defence team. To keep him fed, clothed and incarcerated, just to this point, has cost $737,000 alone. Some would say that no price is too high to catch and convict a callous murderer who preyed on some of the most defenseless in our flawed society. There is no question that spending money was necessary. But an RCMP investigation that cost $70 million, not even counting what the Vancouver Police Department spent – to little apparent effect – in investigating a rash of missing women cases? There has to be a better way, and former attorney general Wally Oppal should be asking some very hard questions in his inquiry of why it took so long to follow up the leads that ultimately led to Pickton’s arrest. Of course it was worthwhile to find some justice in memory of six of the women he targeted, and some sense of closure for their families at least (although there were 20 more murder charges that were never heard in court). There is no question the scope of Pickton’s crimes would make investigation a complicated and costly process. But that the evil actions of a depraved liar could create such a sinkhole of funds is insult added to very grievous injury. What difference could $100 million have made to the budget of any social agency, particularly one tasked with helping the many disadvantaged and marginalized among whom Pickton found his victims? We’ll never know, because it all went into the destructive vortex created by a single individual who knew, all too horribly well, how to exploit the sins of our society against us. (Black Press)

L OCALLY G LOBAL

The long road to political freedom in Burma Was Aung San Suu Kyi’s release last week Burma’s ‘Mandela moment’ or is there a way to go yet before her release really means freedom not only for herself but the people she so dearly loves? Suu Kyi, now 65 years old, has spent almost all of the last 20 years in some form of detention, mostly house arrest and often in solitary confinement, because of her efforts and determination to bring human rights and democracy to the military-ruled country. Over the decades, she has become the icon of hope and freedom in the face of crippling suppression. In 1990 her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), won a landslide election victory (82 per cent) but the ruling junta, which has had ironfisted control of the country they renamed Myanmar since 1962,

tossed the win aside and silenced Suu Kyi with house arrest. But the world took enough notice to award Suu Kyi with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, not that the junta was listening. Then earlier this month, she was again sidelined from Burma’s first election in two decades and not released from house arrest until six days after the Margaret vote and after the EVANS junta had safely secured its majority ‘win’. Suu Kyi is the daughter of the countr y’s independence hero, General Aung San. He was assassinated in 1947 when she was just two years’ old. In 1960 her mother was appointed Burma’s

ambassador to Delhi and they lived in India until 1964 when Suu Kyi was accepted into Oxford University, U.K. to study philosophy, politics and economics. Then marriage and motherhood entered her life. But in 1988 a fateful return trip to Rangoon to care for her critically ill mother landed her in the middle of a political storm when people demanded democratic reform. Honouring her father, she took up the cause travelling the country and calling for change. It earned her the infamous house arrest. Now, 20 years later, if Suu Kyi’s politics haven’t changed, her political landscape has. Earlier this year, the junta brought in new election laws seriously weighted in their favour and discriminating against ‘criminals’ (aka activists) and monks.

Suu Kyi along with NLD leaders, saw the blatant unfairness. The NLD party decided to boycott and did not register for the election but, in taking that position under the new law, the NLD was forced to disband. Aung San Suu Kyi has her freedom but not her party. In the shifting economic change that is re-defining Asia, resource-rich Burma has managed to blunt the sanctions of the western world by cultivating trade and investment with Thailand, China, India, Singapore and Malaysia. Some even wonder if her freedom and the election, sham as it was, may actually reduce the stigma of doing business with Burma. Suu Kyi may now need to expand her horizons from the politics of democracy to the greater dynamics of the economy and push for

social changes that would benefit everyone. That by no means translates into abandoning the ideals of democracy. Instead, her horizons might include a push for economic change and an expansion of trade and commerce with key international partners. That kind of success could be critical for a broad-based growth inclusive of the vast middle class. Just like anywhere else, economics shapes politics and from a wider alliance would come a greater force for political change. None of this is easy anywhere, least of all in a country as hamstrung as Burma. But for sure Suu Kyi knows the need to be up to speed with some new strategic tools in an unlevel playing field to achieve that final goal of democracy for the people she loves.

Applause for Met performance I attended the inaugural performance of the Chilliwack Metropolitan Orchestra at the new Cultural Centre last night and the adjective “phenomenalâ€? is only the starting point that describes the new centre and how well the concert went, and it only gets better from there. Internationally renowned pianist Jacques Couillard DesprĂŠs played Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor brilliantly and magnificently despite being under the weather – the mark of a true performing professional. His fingers played the new grand piano effortlessly and with great emotion. I was totally amazed at his mastery of the tremendously difficult piece and noticed that he only glanced at the sheet music in passing around the 15th page of what must have been a 30- or 40-page piece of music which is a tremendous feat of memorization. Even the emcee, Mayor Sharon Gaetz, remarked to the audience after the intermission that DesprĂŠs’ performance moved her greatly to point of

thinking of bubbles, baths and other things which was high praise indeed. The orchestra, under the guidance of Johan Louwersheimer, did journey person ser vice backing the soloist with a solid rock steady accompaniment which was a testimonial to the conductor and all the musicians. The performance was truly awesome to listen to and watch. The second half of the performance was the orchestra playing Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor. It was very well done and had many sentimental parts that most people would recognize like the largo in the second part which is a tune played by many pipe bands called ‘Going Home’. Again under the skillful baton of conductor Louwersheimer, the musicians delivered a truly quality piece of musical craftsmanship. What impressed me most was the dedication of these hometown musicians who play for the sake of the art and very few of them receive any remuneration at all. They play for the

love of the art and to me that is what makes a hometown champion, and makes the concert like this one especially fun to watch. It’s like going to a hometown hockey game or baseball game and rooting for the players you know because they are your neighbours, friends and work associates. And the players put their hearts and souls into their performance because they know their friends and neighbors are there for them. Anyone who plays any kind of team sports knows how this cyclical dynamic works. Congratulations to the C-Mets for a job well done. My recommendation to the residents of Chilliwack is to get out there and support them at their future concerts. You won’t be disappointed supporting your hometown heroes. They are playing at the Evergreen Hall on Dec. 17. You will get your money’s worth in the first 15 minutes of the concert, and after that the rest is a bonus. Dale McGregor

The Chilliwack & District Real Estate Board PRESENTS THE 27TH ANNUAL ...

“Best of Chilliwack”

DRIVERS from p6 B.C. Restaurants and Foodser vices Association president and CEO Ian Tostenson said the planned recalibrations don’t go far enough to avert what may be a dismal holiday season for the hospitality industry. “It represents baby steps,” Tostenson said. “It is not enough in my opinion that is going to change anything really substantially.” He wants the province to reduce the penalties that apply in the warn range, or give police more discretion to waive them. “The problem is not the people who we scared who would love to have a glass of wine or two with their meal,” Tostenson said, adding the government should concentrate on punishing those who actually exceed 0.08. Police can still issue 24-hour suspensions while the recall is underway – as they did in the past – and can do so based on their own observation of erratic driving without a roadside breathalyzer. Drivers who want to contest the suspension can give a formal breath test at a police station to beat it, but risk being charged with impaired driving if the test shows them above 0.08.

Lieutenant Governor, the first of Asian descent to be appointed in Canada. “He ser ved with pride and distinction, and his vision of Canada included a place where immigrants would find refuge and opportunity,” Campbell said in a statement. “He contributed much to the fabric of British Columbia, and his generosity and kindness will never be forgotten.” The Coquitlam campus of Douglas College is named for Dr. Lam, as is a management research library at the University of B.C.’s Sauder School of Business. Dr. Lam is predeceased by his wife Dorothy, who

died in 1997. Both were inducted into the Order of B.C. in 1995 for their charitable efforts. Dr. Lam is survived by his daughters Debbie, Daphne (Ramund) and Doreen (Philip) as well as seven grandchildren. A ceremony has been planned for Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road, Richmond. The family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the B.C. Errol Brimacombe holds one of many pieces of artwork on display in his home gallery. His place, Brimacombe House, is one of seven locations featured in the eighth annual Chilliwack Christmas Craft Crawl Nov. 26-28. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Craft Crawl: All this and fruitcake, too Brimacombe House, the newest stop on this year’s Chilliwack Christmas Craft Crawl, isn’t the usual suspect when it comes to crawl locations. Firstly, it’s not just a womanrun business, there’s a man at the helm as well. Secondly, being located on Chilliwack Mountain, it’s a little “off the beaten track” as most of the other shops typically reside in the Greendale area. And thirdly it’s not open year round, in fact it’s only open twice a year. But those factors aside, Brimacombe House, an artist’s show house, has several other qualities that make it a perfect candidate for the crawl, says Holly McKeen of Greendale Pottery, a longtime craft crawl business. It’s all home-made, home-

grown product. It has a spectacular view of Chilliwack just outside its windows. And it offers personal service from the moment you step through the door to the moment you leave. All of which are huge on the crawl’s checklist. This year’s craft crawl runs from Nov. 26 to 28. The crawl is a unique shopping experience where participants are encouraged to leisurely peruse through seven home-based businesses over the course of a weekend where they can shop for others or for themselves. It is the opposite of mall shopping. There is no hustle and bustle. There is no frantic grabbing and shameless shoving. The atmosphere is relaxed and personal. And just like the shops, most of the products in them are homemade and homegrown. Brimacombe House is no exception. Twice a year, in the spring and

fall, artist Errol Brimacombe, along with his partner Maureen Kelly, transform their Chilliwack Mountain home into a three-week art gallery for local artists. They clear out their cabinets, remove everything from the walls, declutter their counters and replace everything with art. Paintings, handblown glass, slumped glass, wood ornaments, silk, silver jewelry, Spanish alabaster sculptures, wood-turned bowls, and more fill their living room, dining room, kitchen, stairwell, hallways and bathrooms. All of which comes from B.C., most from the Fraser Valley. “A gallery in the home is more personal and intimate,” says Kelly. “It’s much more of an experience for the people looking at the art.” Brimacombe and Kelly built their 6,200 square foot house, equipped with expansive rooms and floor to ceiling windows,

specifically to be used as an art gallery. Being a painter, Brimacombe wanted a place to show his work. Renting out a hall or hotel space is expensive, and art galleries are

few and far between these days. The house was the solution. “When you’re an artist, this is your reason for being,” he said. “At the end of the day, your work Continued: CRAWL/ p18

“It’s like moving twice a year,” said Kelly. “It’s very hard work, but we have many loyal supporters, and we’re hoping that by being a part of the crawl, we’ll get many more new faces this year.” It won’t just be artwork on display. Kelly’s sweet jellies, syrups and fruitcakes will all be up for grabs as well. adore fruitcake,” said Kelly. “I can’t keep up. I sell out every year no matter how many fruitcakes I make.” Her fruitcake success comes from an old-fashioned, traditional recipe that took over 40 years to perfect by Brimacombe’s mother. “This fruitcake is made the way your great grandmother made it,” she said. “There’s no compromises, no shortcuts, no additives or preservatives. I use real butter, fresh eggs, fresh lemon juice, fresh orange juice. My fruitcake is truly handcrafted.” And it’s just one more item on the list of many to be found along the Chilliwack Christmas Craft Crawl.

Coated Prawns

Process Step one: • Remove all shells and tails from the prawns, wash and let drain • Thoroughly mix the flour mixture in a bowl • Place the Panko coating in a large pan • Thoroughly mix the eggs and water Step two • Take one prawn at a time and place in the flour, ensuring it is completely covered; then place in the egg wash and then place in Panko mix and thoroughly cover the pawn, then pat the mixture into the prawn. • Place the coated prawns on a rack. The trick here, is to let the coating set-up for about 20 minutes.

Great tasting food requires time to prepare. For that reason I tend to prepare large quantities and then freeze portions for future dinners. This recipe is for 35 to 40 mid sized prawns. Ingredients Flour Coating: • 3 cups of flour • 2 tablespoons of salt • ½ teaspoon of onion powder • ½ teaspoon of garlic powder • ½ teaspoon of white pepper • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg Egg Coating: 3 large eggs ½ cup of water Breading: • 2 bags of Panko Japanese breading broken up finer while still in the bag. Cooking: Place ½ inch of canola oil in an electric fry pan or use a deep fryer.

Step three • Bring the oil temperature up to medium, then place prawns into the pan, leaving room to turn the prawns while cooking. • Cook the prawns until they are golden brown, then place on paper towels for draining. • This cooking step will have to be repeated several times, until all the prawns have been cooked. Step four • Let the prawns cool for 20 minutes or so. • Place the amount of prawns required for a meal, on a broiling rack. • Place the prawns under the broiler until they are completely re-heated. They will need to be turned once during this process. Step five • The remaining prawns can be placed in containe rs and frozen for later dinners. • Once frozen, let them thaw and then broil as explained above. Recipe submitted by: Harv McCullough

Chocolate and more If visions of sugar plums haven’t started dancing yet, Claude Meilleur might have some ideas. Meilleur owns The Chocolate Shoppe, which recently opened its downtown location after several years in south Sardis. As the name would suggest, if you’re looking for chocolate, The Chocolate Shoppe is a good place to start. Meilleur loves chocolate, but not just any chocolate. The products he stocks are made with Belgium “Callebaut” chocolate, which originates with the world famous chocolatier Bernard Callebaut. They’re custom made at Charlie’s Chocolate Factory in Burnaby – a family-owned business famous for its chocolate for four decades. The recipe, perfected

over centuries, uses no preservatives, or wax filler. And the fact that it is gluten free, means the chocolate is also suitable for with celiac disease. The shop also carries a wide variety of chocolates made without sugar so they are suitable for diabetics Meilleur has only been at his downtown location for a couple of months. And business has been great, he says. When his lease came due at The Chocolate Shoppe’s Sardis location, he and his business partner, Jim Bleker began looking for another location. “We found the perfect place downtown,” he says, pointing to his high visibility at the corner of Spadina and Main Street. “Business has increased dramatically since we’ve

been here,” he says. And people are coming for more than just chocolate, Meilleur adds. The Chocolate Shoppe stocks a variety of treats, like Old World Fudge, and candies of every shape and description. Indeed, if you’re looking for gifts this holiday season, Meilleur has some ideas, from the traditional

Bella Roma brings in the sunshine between what they want and what they can afford. Unger says she’s fortunate to work in the Fraser Valley where there are so many excellent growers so close at hand. Flowers are a perishable product so freshness is key, Unger says. At Bella Roma, technology his helping maintain that freshness. The shop is equipped with state-of-theart “water cooled convection refrigeration.” That means the flowers are kept at the ideal temperature, without the loss of moisture that comes with fan-driven refrigeration. Unger says clients have told her that Bella Roma flowers last up to three weeks once they’ve left the shop. With the holidays approaching, Unger’s talents have turned to table displays and centerpieces. But flowers always remain a popular choice. The weather outside may indeed be frightful, but fresh flowers always have a way of bringing the springtime inside. Bella Roma Florist is located at 45883 Wellington Ave., phone 604-392-7890, or go online to www.bellaromaflorist. com

Gitte Unger is the owner of Bella Roma Florist on Wellington Avenue. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Looking to deck your halls this holiday season? Bella Roma Florists is one of the newest additions to the unique shops along Wellington Ave., and it is already setting itself apart for the freshness of its flowers and its imaginative and thoughtful floral displays. Gitte Unger has been working with flowers for years – but always in someone else’s shop. A few months ago, however, she decided to follow her dream and start her own business at a Wellington location she had eyed for some time. “It’s ideal,” she says. The high visibility meant a lot of walk-in traffic when the weather was warmer. And the natural light cheers the elegant decor now that it’s winter. Unger says she loves working with flowers. Not only can they change with the season, but they also make such a special gift. “Every bouquet is a special thought, or a reflection of the person giving it,” she says. When she works with clients, she tries to understand them so she can create arrangements that are unique. Unger offers complimentary consultations for brides and their families so she can help them find that delicate balance

The Chilliwack Progress

Dear Santa, I would like lots of presents in my stocking this year! If this is your Christmas wish, St. Nick may advise you to go shopping downtown this holiday season. The Downtown Business Improvement Association (BIA) is hosting the Win the Window Contest, which offers downtown visitors the chance to win Chilliwack’s largest grand prize giveaway this winter. From furniture to fine fashions, dining certificates to dental care, more than 30 downtown businesses have contributed to the fantastic grand prize “window” showcase valued at over $9,000. One lucky

winner will take home the entire prize package, with smaller subsidiary prizes also being awarded. For your chance to enter, simply visit any of the participating downtown merchants to fill out an entry form. There is a limit of one entry per household from each business, but you can maximize your odds of winning by entering at all participating businesses. This gives you over 30 chances to enter! While visiting the downtown to collect your entry forms, be sure to stop by the window showcase displayed at Salish Plaza, First Ave and Young Rd. The

window was professionally decorated by local event decor company Scene Setters, and looks like something you would see in some of the worlds largest shopping meccas. The Win the Window Contest runs this holiday season until Saturday December 18, with the grand prize and subsidiary prizes being drawn in time to give some fortunate shoppers a very merry Christmas. For more information about the contest, contact the BIA office at 604792-4576, or visit their website at www. downtownchilliwack.com.

Inconsistent play haunting Bruins

PUCK PREVIEW

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress The up and down nature of the 2010-11 Chilliwack Bruins was perfectly illustrated this weekend in games against the Tri-City Americans and Regina Pats. On Friday night, the Bruins gave it their all against a loaded Americans squad, coming up with a huge 4-3 win. Against the defending Western conference champions, the Bruins were fast and physical and opportunistic and deserved the two points. But on Saturday night the tables turned as the Bruins welcomed the Regina Pats, one of the worst teams in the Eastern conference. Chilliwack was sluggish from the start, and trailed 2-1 through 40 minutes. They got it together in the final frame and salvaged a single point by forcing overtime. But the end result was appropriate, with the Bruins losing 3-2 in a shootout. “There’s no excuse for having that kind of letdown against Regina,” said Kevin Sundher, who had one of the Chilliwack goals and also scored in the shootout. “This is a game we needed to have and the start we had was very disappointing.” Head coach Marc Habscheid has noted more than once recently the inconsistency plaguing his team. The Bruins rarely go on lengthy winning streaks and they rarely suffer lengthy losing streaks. To gain any traction in the Western conference standings, Sundher knows his

HEAD-TO-HEAD The Bruins are 16-14-2-2 alltime against the Cougars, with a record of 10-5-2-0 within the friendly confines of Prospera Centre.

LAST MEETING The Bruins dominated Prince George last season, going 6-1-0-1. In the last meeting, on March 10, Ryan Howse and Tim Traber had two goals apiece in a 7-4 win. Shayne Neigum, Brandon Manning and Colton Grant picked up singles while Braden Gamble stopped 20 of 24 shots for the win in net.

NHL PROSPECTS BRETT CONNOLLY - F Drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round (sixth ova) of the 2010 NHL entry draft.

Chilliwack’s Roman Horak catches Regina netminder Damien Ketlo wandering out of his net, creating a good scoring chance. Ketlo had few miscues Saturday night, stopping 45 shots plus three-of-four in the shootut as his Pats upended the Bruins 3-2 at Prospera Centre. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

team is going to have to string together some wins. “We’re going to have to figure it out, because if we want to move up in the standings we can’t be one on, one off,” he said. To be fair, the Bruins ran into a very hot Regina netminder in Damien Ketlo, who turned aside 45 shots in regulation and overtime, and stopped three of four in the shootout. Sometimes, you just have to tip your hat to a goalie, but Sundher feels Chilliwack could have done more to make Ketlo’s job difficult. “He was good, but we were getting a lot of perimeter shots to be honest,” he said. “We didn’t get into the red zone (right in front of

the crease) enough, and if you’re shooting from the outside, a good goalie is going to be able to stop those.” The Pats opened the scoring on a power play, with Pats defenceman Ricard Bildestrand finishing off a three-way passing play started by Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Carter Ashton. Ashton passed to Thomas Frazee below the goalline and Frazee spotted Bildestrand moving down from the point. Frazee’s pass was on target, leaving Bildestrand with a yawning cage to shoot at for his second of the year. Chilliwack tied the game just 83 seconds into the second period on Sundher’s tally. Mike Forsyth did some

good work down low, tying up Myles Bell in the left corner long enough for the Buffalo Sabres draft pick to swoop in and grab a loose puck. Sundher wheeled to the bottom of the faceoff circle and beat Ketlo five-hole for his seventh of the year. But the Pats got that back with another last minute power play goal. Ashton notched his 13th of the season, roofing the puck to finish off a bang-bang play with Frazee. Ashton’s strike came with just 32 seconds remaining. Chilliwack had the perfect chance to shake off the doldrums early in the final frame when back-to-back minors to Art Bidlevskii (interference) and Brandon Davidson (roughing)

put the Pats two men short for 1:40. Outstanding goaltending by Ketlo kept the Bruins at bay, a disappointing result for a power play that has produced so many game-changing goals this season. “We had 1:40, tons of time,” Sundher said. “We weren’t good enough in that situation.” But Chilliwack came in waves as the period went on and Ketlo couldn’t stand on his head forever. On another late power play, Roman Horak camped out to the left of the Regina net, popping in a loose puck for his 14th of the season, sending the game to overtime and then the shootout. Through three

rounds, the teams remained tied on goals by Sundher and Ashton. In the fourth round, Brandon Magee had the puck roll off his stick, and Colin Reddin won the game with a backhand-forehand top shelf shot. “I wish there was a magic button to get that consistency we need,” Sundher said. “Winning teams are consistent day in and day out. We’ve got to figure it out and quickly. We’re 20 or so games into the season, and it’s time we started taking over.” The Bruins are at Prospera Centre tomorrow night at 7 p.m., getting their first look at the vastly improved Prince George Cougars.

Howie Zaron’s appointment as the new general manager of the Okanagan Sun comes with a guarantee: The B.C. Football Conference football club will be back on top where it belongs in 2011. The former head coach and GM of the Chilliwack Huskers is back in charge of a B.C. Football Conference team, and just as quotable as ever. “There is no excuse for the Okanagan Sun not to be winning championships,” said Zaron at an introductory press

conference last Tuesday. “I can promise you guys that I will do everything that I possibly can to make sure you never have that gut-wrenching feeling that you had when we lost that last game (to the Vancouver Island Raiders). “Between me, coach and this great organization, I’m going to promise you guys something right now, we will be B.C. champions in 2011.” The GM post had been vacant since the end of the 2009 season, when Derrick Malinchuk stepped down after two years on the job. President Bill Long said Zaron’s ability to

recruit, his knowledge of the game, and his pure passion for the sport made him the ideal man for the job. “Howie knows football players and he’s probably as entrenched in Canadian junior football as anybody,” Long said. “If there’s a good high school player west of Quebec, Howie knows about him.” For Zaron’s part, he plans to leave no stone unturned when it comes to supplying the Sun coaching staff with the best talent available from all across the country. Zaron said he’s fully prepared to commit the kind of time and energy required to do the job

right. “To find a guy that actually wants to put in the time for the phone calls, the e-mails and travelling all over the place to go get players — it’s not easy and I think anybody will tell you that,” Zaron said. “But I enjoy it. I enjoy meeting new coaches and players. I enjoy going to small towns on the Prairies. That’s probably where the best football in the country is played and watching games out there is a lot of fun.” The Sun’s reputation as a perennial power in junior football has taken a beating over the last few years. Zaron said it’s high

time the book was closed on an underachieving era of Sun football. “I always hear things like, we’re this, we’re that, we’re the best, but we haven’t won in six years. And I think that attitude has got to change,” Zaron said. “The community of Kelowna and the Okanagan Sun, it’s not a right to play here, it’s a privilege to play here. I think the players, and the coaches, and myself have to realize that and start acting that way.” Zaron lives in Langley and will continue to reside on the Lower Mainland, but trips to Kelowna will be more frequent.

WHL falls to the Russians For the first time in eight years, Team Russia has won the Subway Super Series, going 4-1-1 against teams from the Quebec, Ontario and Western junior leagues. Russia finished the

series a 5-2 win overthe Western Hockey League stars in Prince George last Thursday. Chilliwack Bruin Ryan Howse was part of the WHL contingent, although he didn’t hit the scoresheet.

Prince George Cougar Brett Connolly and Medicine Hat Tiger Linden Vey had the WHL goals. Stanislav Bocharov scored three times for Russia, while Dmitry Shikin stopped 38 shots in net.

Tough times for Cascades against Thunderbirds

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s and women’s

basketball teams were swept by the University of British Columbia this weekend, as they fell for the second straight night in Vancouver. The women dropped a 60-49 decision to the Thunderbirds on Friday, and lost 72-47 in the Saturday night rematch. The Cascades saw their Canada West regular season record fall

Chilliwack’s Sarah Wierks added nine points, and her sister Nicole scored seven, with each adding five rebounds. The Cascades were held to 29.3 per cent shooting, hitting less than 18 per cent of their second half shots. UFV returns home this weekend to face the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack at

the Envision Athletic Centre in Abbotsford. The UFV men dropped an 84-68 decision to UBC on Friday, and fell 96-82 in the Saturday night rematch, dropping to 2-6 in Canada West regular season play. The T-birds led by 19 points after the first quarter Saturday night and maintained that lead into halftime.

to 2-6. Saturday’s game was close in the first half, with UFV trailing by just seven points at the break. The third quarter, however, was disastrous as the T-Birds outgunned the Cascades 15-2 to put the game out of reach. Winnipeg’s Tessa Klassen led UFV in scoring with 12 points.

Preparing for

WINTER on the ROAD

Hydroplaning Hydroplaning occurs when water on the roadway accumulates in front of a vehicle’s tires faster than the weight of the vehicle can push it out of the way. The water pressure can push the vehicle up on a thin layer of water, essentially breaking the tires’ contact with the road. In a matter of seconds, a driver can lose control and end up swerving out of his or her lane. It is important to follow a few guidelines to prevent hydroplaning. First, keep tires well maintained. Worn-out tread can contribute to hydroplaning, as can inadequately inflated tires. Certain tread patterns are more capable of diverting water away from the tires. Ask a professional about which tire tread to choose. Next, realize that the higher the speed, the higher the propensity to hydroplane. At lower speeds, it is generally rare to hydroplane, unless the water puddles driven through are exceptionally deep. Reduce speeds when it is raining. Also, lighter vehicles are more prone to hydroplaning. Again, if driving a compact or lightweight vehicle, slow down when water is on the road. Should hydroplaning occur, let off the gas and do not apply the brake or turn the wheels. Once the car slows down and retains traction once more, steer and brake accordingly.

How to Drive in Dangerous Conditions Individuals who live in areas of the country where the temperature and weather changes throughout the seasons have to adapt their driving to meet the road conditions. Weatherrelated accidents are some of the most prevalent but can be largely prevented if the proper driving techniques are followed. Some of the more dangerous driving conditions include heavy rain that causes hydroplaning, driving on ice and driving in heavy snow.

Twice in the second half, UFV went on 10 point runs to close the gap, but UBC was too strong down the stretch, hitting key baskets to hold the Cascades at bay. UFV was led by California native Zeon Gray with 26 points and three assists. Ryan Fahandeg (Kelowna) added 15 points and five rebounds

while Abbotsford’s Joel Friesen chipped in with 14 points, four assists and a team high eight total rebounds. UBC out rebounded UFV 40 to 28 for the game. The UFV men return home this weekend to host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack in back to back games at the Envision Centre.

These are the best vehicles to get the most qualified buyers to see your home. Realtors educate their clients about the local market and work with other Realtors to match buyers and sellers. My goal is to make the process of buying, selling or owning a home efficient, enjoyable and rewarding for you. See what my clients have said about my real estate services... “Clark Hitchcock helped us find and buy a townhouse in Chilliwack. Clark took us through a large number of single family homes and townhomes in Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack and we bought a home in less than two weeks! He was thorough, patient, punctual, smart and was honest and open with us. Perhaps the thing that struck me most was that Clark’s service did not stop when we signed the deal - he continued to help us through the purchase process with referrals, faxes, e-mails and telephone calls on our behalf. We were moving in from out-of-province, so this was most useful. We recommend Clark Hitchcock without reservation.” – Mitch & Jan Toews

currently on the market. This preparation may also include getting an outside opinion from a home inspector about the condition of your home and making the needed repairs or cosmetic improvements. People who try to sell their own homes begin to appreciate the expertise of professional Realtors as soon as their first offer comes in. They want to sell their home, and they have found prospects who want to buy. But what happens next? When the negotiating process begins, things can get “sticky”. First, there are personalities involved, and real estate transactions can sometimes be difficult. The buyers may seem unreasonable if they make an offer that is considerably less than the sellers are willing to accept. At that point the buyers may become offended by the sellers’ attitude. When professional Realtors are involved, the process is much less adversarial. The two parties see very little to none of each other until the rough edges have been smoothed out and there has been a meeting of the minds. Realtors know how to keep personalities out of the transaction and to help both sides reach a mutually agreeable compromise.

Hello, my name is Corny Woelders, I am one of the proud owners of Landmark Realty Chilliwack. I am married and have two great kids. I grew up in Chilliwack and graduated from C.S.S.S. (a long time ago) and then moved to Abbotsford where I met my wife of 23 years. I predominately worked in the poultry and dairy industry and also ran our own Poultry Farm. I became a realtor a number of years ago and worked out of the Landmark Abbotsford office. However, I found myself selling a lot of homes in Chilliwack for friends and family, so when a Landmark franchise came available, my partners and I knew that Chilliwack was the place to go. Today’s low interest rates, plus low prices, plus high inventory, equals the perfect buyers market. So come on in and visit our office and I will help you with all your real estate needs.

When selling your home, your Realtor will also provide you with a seller’s disclosure form. You have a choice of either making the repairs or letting the buyers know what the problems are, especially any potentially serious problems. Some buyers will want a structural inspection so that they will have a good idea about what they are getting into. Even if the buyers don’t ask for an expert to look at the house, it is the seller’s responsibility to disclose any defects in the property that they know about. A concealed problem may come back to haunt you after the closing. Many lawsuits involve undisclosed defects, and the settlement of these cases makes the cost of repair or the price concession during the sales look like a real bargain. Another good reason why it pays to work with a professional. While any sale can potentially become complicated and difficult, a Realtor is trained to tackle such difficulties so your transaction ends on a positive note. Real estate professionals work hard to maintain a good rapport between the parties involved in every transaction, to make your real estate experience a good one!

I believe that the qualities of a good real estate agent are honesty, integrity and a strong work ethic. ✞ Obituaries CLAYTON John Chandler “Jack”

Feb. 9, 1928 – Nov. 18, 2010 The Clayton family is saddened to announce the passing of our beloved husband and CLAYTON father after a long and valiant struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was surrounded by his family as he peacefully passed away. His wife Jean of 53 years will miss him deeply, as will his three children Caryn (Kohlruss), Mark, Lara, and his son-in-law Greg. Jack was an amazing husband and father who touched the lives of many others, whether it be through his business endeavors or his involvement with Rotary International, as well as other community services. Prior to the family’s arrival in BC in 1975, Jack was corporate executive for Bendix Modular Homes and RV division in Canada, US and Europe. He was the founder and president of Manco Home Systems in Agassiz, BC and served on the Chilliwack Hospital Board and on the Board of Directors of the BCAA. Jack was also proudly the founder of the Agassiz/Harrison chapter of Rotary International. The family would like to thank Dr. Howard Bright, his family doctor of more than 20 years, for the kindness and dedication he showed to Jack. We would also like to thank the entire staff of the Waverly Care Home for the tireless compassion and loving care they demonstrated for the six years he was a resident there. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday November 26, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at the Chilliwack United Church, 45835 Spadina Avenue, Chilliwack BC . If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of BC. Henderson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium Ltd. 45901 Victoria Avenue, Chilliwack, British Columbia (604) 792.1344
