The Squiala First Nation is an equal partner in the multi-million dollar Eagle Landing development with the Property

Development Group. The development includes 600,000 square-feet of retail space anchored by stores like Walmart and Home Depot. And the new Galaxy Cinema. “This is great for Chilliwack, and the First Nation,” Squiala Chief David Jimmie said. “This is bigger than just us.”

Chilliwack MLAs are not committing right now to any of the declared candidates to replace Premier Gordon Campbell as head of the BC Liberal Party. Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner said he must remain neutral because he has been named to a committee that will oversee the leadership race, but his cat, Ranger, remains a “sentimental favourite.” “I have accepted a position with the BC Liberal Party on a committee that will be overseeing the leadership race at the convention,” he said. “Our job is to make sure the race is conducted in a fair and appropriate manner, so I will remain neutral.” Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong, currently the province’s attorney-general, is expected to announce his bid for the leadership on Wednesday. Vancouver MLA Moira Stilwell is also in the running. Former deputy premier Christy Clark is reported to be considering a leadership bid. Although Carole Taylor has been reported in the media as not interested in the position, Penner said he believes she “would do a remarkable job of bringing new life to politics in B.C.” “I think the public is looking for a different approach, and that applies to the BC Liberal Party,” he added.

Reaction muted to school holiday name change The Progress Reaction to the Chilliwack board of education’s move last week to rename winter vacation to Christmas holidays has been cautious. Both Chilliwack’s Muslim and First Nations communities were okay with the name change as long as it was done from a secular vision. “I don’t think this is a big issue for us,” said Osama Ebesh of the Chilliwack Islamic Centre. “Most people in Chilliwack are Christians,

and the school board is just following the majority.” Tyrone McNeil, president of the First Nations education steering community, also didn’t think it was an issue for the First Nations community, despite stating that many First Nations people don’t look fondly on Christianity. “If it’s just about renaming the holidays, I don’t think that’s a problem,” said McNeil. “But if the school board tries to instill religious intonations with this, then that would be a serious concern ... something First Nations people might find alarm-

ing.” The BC School Trustees Association said trustees have an obligation to reflect the values and priorities of the community they serve in their decision making. “Boards of education need to ensure they are reflecting the priorities and wishes of the community they represent first and foremost with students at the front of mind when making those decisions,” said Connie Denesiuk, president of the BCSTA. When asked if it was an insensitive decision on the board’s part,

Denesiuk said that was a question the trustees needed to answer. Silvia Dyck, chair of Chilliwack board of education, did not respond to interview requests made by the Progress. She did, however, email the board’s statement on the name change. “In response to the media attention that has resulted from the recent decision of the board of education to refer to the winter break period as the Christmas holiday, the board wishes to confirm its ongoing commitment to an inclusive school system,” the statement read.

However, trustee John Henry Harter, the lone trustee who disapproved of the name change, is adamant that the decision was insensitive of Chilliwack’s diversity, and did nothing to better education for students in the Chilliwack school district. “I’m not convinced this is going to improve student achievement,” he said. “I just don’t see how tinkering with this wording has anything to do with the school district’s main goals and objectives.” kbartel@theprogress.com

Clear majority of council backs current direction Jennifer Feinberg The Progress On the eve of Chilliwack council’s annual budget talks in Harrison Hot Springs, the current financial direction of the City of Chilliwack has the support of all but one city councillor. The question became an issue when Coun. Diane Janzen surprised many in council chambers on Nov. 15, by voicing her opposition to the 10-year financial template on the table, warning of tax hikes and depleted reserves. The multi-million dollar settlement — inked last year by the city to purchase the homes of property owners in the Eastern Hillsides — is key to understanding the current financial

debate. The settlement decision went ahead after experts determined the hillside homes had been built on a 4,000-year old slide. In the wake of Coun. Janzen’s stance, The Progress surveyed the rest of council, to determine the mood of the group as it heads into meetings where budget discussions and objectives will get underway. Councillors were asked one question — do they support the financial direction the city is taking? The responses show that Coun. Janzen’s opposition was not shared by her fellow council members. Councillors Chuck Stam, Ken Huttema, Pat Clark and Sue Attrill all said unequivocally they support the current financial direction of the city.

“Yes, I support the financial direction of our past two fiscal years,” said Stam in an e-mailed response. “In any given budget there are items we may individually disagree with. We have ample opportunities to voice our opinions, and when the final vote is taken, we live with the majority rule.” In any case the third fiscal year of their term is on the agenda at this week’s budget meetings, he said. “We have an opportunity every year to refocus our budget and that process takes into account the economic climate, as well as the shortand long-term goals we set during our mandate,” offered Coun. Clark in an e-mail. “There are always tough decisions to make, but yes, I am satisfied with the process we use to

make those decisions and the direction they have provided for us.” Coun. Attrill said she “absolutely” supports the current direction, including the tough decision council had to make with the hillside settlement. “We consulted all the experts and carefully reviewed all of our options. We tried repeatedly to get financial assistance for the residents from the PEP program with no luck. “In the end we chose the least costly and the least risky solution for the taxpayers of Chilliwack,” she wrote in a e-mail. “I am not thrilled about the cost but the alternatives were much worse.” Going forward, the city is rebuilding its reserves, and the public will still get to have input in February

on upcoming budget decisions, said Attrill. “I would have to say, yes, I do support the financial direction the city is taking,” said Coun. Huttema. “We are victim to economic circumstances, so we feel the pinch more. So, yes, (the settlement) was an unexpected and unfortunate surprise that we had to deal with as new councillors. “But considering the economic climate, our financial position is excellent, and we could become the envy of other cities because of it.” Coun. The Christmas Kettle campaign was launched over the weekend and it will run straight through until Christmas Eve, says Ian Pratt, community ministries director for Chilliwack Salvation Army. “We have seen a real spike in the need out there,” he says, citing a 45-per-cent increase in the number of families coming to the Chilliwack food bank at the Salvation Army’s Care and Share Centre. “We put it down to an increase in the number of working poor.” They filled 1,500 hampers last year, and

gave away vouchers for $36,000 worth of Christmas turkey. But this season they’re on target to fill about 1,800 hampers, having already surpassed last year’s total. It’s a bit later than usual due to logistics, but Sally Ann volunteers can now be spotted manning the ubiquitous red kettles and jingling bells to get attention at more than 15 venues around town. “It’s our big annual push to fund the operation of the food bank,” Pratt says. “Most of it goes to filling our Christmas hampers. We’re a vessel through which the community can help.” “Dignity For All” is the new kettle campaign theme this year. “It means everyone is worthwhile no

matter what their circumstances,” he says. “We support people, we don’t look down on them.” He invites everyone to help out the Sally Ann and its work by dropping what they can in a kettle this month, whether it’s a loonie or a big cheque. “Come on out and support us,” he says. “And a big thank-you goes out to the community for all you have done in the past.” He’s been completely “blown away” by Chilliwack’s spirit of giving since taking over his new position in the community about six weeks ago. Foul play not suspected No foul play is indicated in the discovery of the remains of a human body found Thursday in Chilliwack. RCMP Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said investigators have completed their examination of the scene, and are now awaiting autopsy results and positive identification of the remains. “At this time there’s no indication of foul play,” she said. The remains - with the head separated from the torso, according to an unconfirmed report - were found just before noon by a woman walking her dog near Progress Way.

An alternative to the controversial Aggregate Pilot Project will be presented at a meeting Wednesday hosted by the Friends of The Chilliwack River Valley. “We’re going to have a clause in our plan about how to resolve conflicts; how to give gravel companies what they need without crushing communities,” said Glen Thompson, spokesman for the citizens’ group. A proposed gravel removal plan hammered out by representatives of the Fraser Valley Regional District, the provincial government and gravel industry officials has met with bitter opposition from residents. Thompson said the alternative plan will call for governments to pay more for the significant amount of gravel they buy, which would allow companies to mine away from residents’ backyards, and haul grav-

el by rail rather than by truck. “The gravel companies are going the same way as the forest industry, which resulted in bitter disputes without end,” he said. The group is also calling on local and regional governments to boycott companies that are currently contravening bylaws, and to move gravel mining from the Mines Act to the Forest and Range Practices Act, which contains tighter environmental regulations. In addition to Thompson, speakers at the Wednesday meeting will include Victor Froese, spokesman for residents opposed to a proposed expansion of a gravel mine on Vedder Mountain, Cynthia Berge of the Area C (Lake Errock) Environmental Stewards, and Abbotsford resident Walter Neufeld, an outspoken critic of gravel mining. NDP environment critic Rob Fleming will also speak at the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Yarrow Community Hall.

She’s concerned about tough times affecting revenues, saying five years ago the real estate market here was hot, and Chilliwack could live off the growth. That’s not the case anymore. So Chilliwack is facing the same fiscal challenges as other communities are facing, with the settlement payout added on top. “The city already has depleted reserves and growing debt. A report by a “keeneyed” witness to a theft from a vehicle Saturday night on Kathleen Drive led to the later arrest of three suspects. The three suspects, two from Surrey, age 19 and 22, and one from White Rock, aged 20, were scheduled to appear in court Monday to face charges of theft, possession of stolen property,

After the first report, there were “multiple calls for various property crime offences in the same area,” she said. Theatre gives gala opening Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob said “there’s nothing I enjoy more in my role as CEO than opening a new theatre. “And the community of Chilliwack is just as excited as I am, based on ticket sales in the opening week.” The 1,600-seat theatre will show new movie releases as well as classic flicks starting in January like ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ he said. Cineplex also recognizes the “importance of being a part of the community,” he added, and will hold “community days” starting in December where movies will be shown at a reduced price - and the proceeds donated to Chilliwack minor hockey. Jacob said the Squiala band has been a “great partner” in the theatre development. “It was great working with them, they were great partners,” he said.

Last week’s brush with snowy, cold weather is a stark reminder that despite living in the most temperate climate in Canada, we are still a part of a wintry country. And we’re not very good at it. The first snowfall of the season is always exciting. Who amongst us didn’t make a beeline for the window in the morning to see just how much of snow was sticking around? But the chaos that ensues makes us the butt of jokes in the rest of the snowencrusted country. All last week weather forecasters warned us in dour, doom-filled tones this was coming. As S-Day neared, they issued breathless warnings, first for two to four centimeters, then five to 10 centimeters! TV news crews rushed to local garages to interview harried mechanics booked to capacity installing snow tires. They descended upon works’ yards to shoot impressive mounds of sand and salt. Newspaper reporters made dutiful calls to emergency shelters to see how they would care for the homeless. Merchants in malls and shopping centres rubbed their hands in anticipation of an appropriately seasonal feel to the start of the Christmas shopping rush. And we responded, as anyone who popped into a grocery store Friday evening for a loaf of bread may have witnessed from their spot 10 people deep in the checkout line; people were stocking up to hunker down and ride out the storm. Somewhere in Calgary, where it was minus 15C on Saturday with a foot of snow already on the ground, someone is chuckling at our expense. Mother Nature gave us a pass last year. But climatologists say this is a “La Nina” year with a very active jet stream bringing us cold temperatures from the north and moisture from the Pacific Ocean. And when they combine, that often means snow. So we’d better get used to it. Meanwhile, in Toronto it was 14 degrees and raining on Monday. Hmmmmm. ~Black Press

World a-twitter at royal wedding announcement Needless to say, the announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement set off a firestorm of excitement and anticipation for their April 29th wedding next year in Westminster Abbey. What a breath of fresh air amid so much dismal news. After such a long courtship it is a great outcome launching, hopefully, a lasting and happy marriage. But getting up to speed with the organization of the event is already raising a few traditional eyebrows. William’s renowned stubbornness is proving that he knows how to get his own way among the royal courtiers when push comes to shove. He chose the moment of the announcement, he is a hands- on guy when it comes to organization and, beyond the obvious pomp that all regal weddings are made of, he and Kate

are determined to make this a people’s wedding. Good on them. According to Richard Kay and Geoffrey Levy writing in the Daily Mail, no one knows better than the Queen how much stronger William is than his father, Prince Charles. He’s more positive and when he makes up his mind he gets things done. Margaret It is said among EVANS those in royal circles that the only people he really listens to are his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. His choice of Westminster Abbey (would we all have such choices) not only honours his grandparents’ own wedding in the Abbey in 1947

but the poignant funeral of his mother 13 years ago. Keeping the memory of Diana in the loop was behind that stunning, iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring on Kate’s finger. The ring has its own little regal urban legend. It wasn’t Prince Charles or Diana who chose it back in 1980 but was the choice of the Queen after she had it secretly brought to the palace in a tray of signet rings. Footing the bill for this wedding is going to take some deep, mostly royal, pockets although security will be a government bill. Rumbles are already being made that in times of austerity this should be a pared down affair. Probably, but this family has quite the social circle not to mention the umbilical cord of heads of state. In retrospect, both the Queen

and Prince Philip’s wedding and that of Charles and Diana were held in tough economic times, the former right after World War II and the latter at the onset of the 1980’s recession. Predictably, Charles and Di’s wedding was a major economic stimulus with tourism and staggering amounts of merchandise. The post war wedding though came with its own adjustment. When (then) Princess Elizabeth got engaged, ration coupons were in force having been introduced in Britain in 1940. The Germans tried to weaken the Brits by attacking the supply ships bringing food into the country. Rationing attempted to make sure everyone got a fair share. Since clothes were also rationed, Elizabeth saved her ration cards to pay for the material for her wedding dress designed by the

The dress itself was made from Scottish satin but even that got caught in a political firestorm when rivals floated the rumour that the silk to create the satin was from enemy silk worms (possibly Italy or Japan). Frantic phone calls confirmed the silkworms were actually from Nationalist China. No doubt just what Kate’s wedding dress will be made of will be Wikileaks-proof. This modern love-struck couple are so popular that, according to polls, both Brits and Canadians want to see William become the next king. According to an Ipsos Reid poll, 55 per cent of Canadians say Prince Charles should step aside in favour of William. Nice, but not a chance.

There is the pagan celebration of Solstice or Yule on December 21, there is the Christian Christmas on the 25th, the Pan-African holiday of Kwanzaa is from December 26 to January 1, and many celebrate New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day on December 31 and January 1. Some years Chanukah falls during the Winter Break. It can only be the boards’ personal religious beliefs that make them want to highlight Christmas as if it is the only holiday within Winter Vacation. The decision to change from the inclusive and more accurate name of Winter Vacation to one that is Christian specific serves only to exclude all other religions and beliefs in order to focus exclusively on Christians. While I do understand that the Christianity is the dominant belief group in the Valley, they are by no means the only group. Over 20,000 citizens of Chilliwack cited no religion in the

last census to measure this (2001) and over one thousand professed a religion other than Christian. I contend that the board has acted in a way that serves their own religious views and ignores all others. This is contrary to the very notion of an inclusive, collaborative school district. Why was this motion made? Who does it benefit? Does it help our students? Increase our completion rates? Can we honestly argue that anyone is better off that the School Board started a debate that seems to have set neighbours against neighbours in a needless religious debate? When it was called Winter Vacation it served to recognize the diversity of our community and respect all faiths and traditions without singling out one as more important than the other. Time for Christmas rhetoric to end With almost one third of the world declaring itself to be Christian, wishing each other a Merry Christmas will never be replaced with “happy holidays,” “seasons greetings”, winter vacation or anything else the secular world wants us to use. Christmas is about one thing - celebrating the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. It’s not about shopping, getting gifts, spending money, frustration in the mall parking lots, etc. We celebrate the birth of our Lord by remembering the love he brings us that we are to share with all people in

thought, word and deed. We celebrate his love and remember him by spending time with our family and friends in ways as simple as saying grace before dinner at a house party. There is only one reason for the Christmas Season - Jesus Christ, as there is one reason for Ramadan, Hanukkah and Diwali. All religious faiths have a right and responsibility to stand up for and defend not only what they believe but to defend the right of each others faith to practice what they believe. Removing the use of the word “Christmas” from our vocabulary therefore

is not only an attempt to devalue the Christian faith, it is the beginning of an attempt to remove all words of faith from our society as a whole. This is something that good people of all faiths cannot and will not allow to happen. The Knights of Columbus are such people and one way we proudly declare our faith is through our Keep Christ in Christmas program. Christmas isn’t going to go away, it’s here to stay until Christ does return to us. So in Christmas season of joy and peace, let us put away our weapons of rhetoric

and offer each other the love, joy and Blessings of the Christmas season - for that really is what CHRISTmas is all about. To that end we wish to offer our sincerest appreciation to the Chilliwack School Board for their thoughtfulness, integrity and courage in unanimously approving the name change of the “winter vacation” to “Christmas Holidays”. School district should support all students Wow, what a very interesting few days I’ve had. Religion is a very personal thing and, as I’ve said many times this week, I respect everyone’s belief. That part has not been quoted and remains edited out as it’s not dramatic enough. I was one of three folks attending a public school board meeting and

felt I had to address the counterpoint to calling the two-week break (in less than a month) something other than Christmas. As I’ve stated, we represent the public school system and all of the kids that are apart of it. My hope is that we can address this in a timely manner next year and also that our schools continue

to address our many cultural beliefs within their school day. Lastly, I’m very thankful that I’m a confident person and can easily ignore personal attacks. Maybe I believe in Christmas, maybe I don’t. That’s no one’s business but my own. Kirsten Brandreth DPAC president

Board move divides community I am deeply saddened with the decision to change the name of Winter Vacation to Christmas Vacation. This decision has created needless division and often hostile discourse in our community as expressed in the letters to the editor and the comments section of major newspapers across the province. It serves no clear goal except to impose some trustees’ personal religious views on the district as a whole. Since the meeting I have read many comments suggesting that it is about time we put Christ back into Christmas. However, it is not the role of a public school district to endorse one religion over another. Christmas, December 25, is only one of the holidays that occur over the two week break. Winter Vacation for our school district runs from December 17, 2010 to January 3, 2011. Within this time period, there are a number of holidays both religious and secular.

At this time of year in B.C., people of many different national origins and other religions along with people of no religious affiliation, join Protestants and Catholics in celebrating Christmas. It may well be that for many of them who are not Christians, Christmas is just a national cultural event, but that does not preclude them from observing it in their own way. It is quite apparent in the shopping malls and stores these days that people of all kinds, whatever their religious persuasion (or lack thereof), are engaged in the happy pursuit of just the right gifts for family members. Those who have come to Canada from other lands and choose to con-

tinue in the religious observances of their former country are free to do so. It is unlikely that they came to Canada expecting to change our national culture any more than we would expect to change the culture in their former homeland should we move there. Despite the freedom non-Christians have to ignore Christmas, touchy, politically-correct faultfinders see the retention of the name of this aspect of Canadian culture as somehow offensive to those who don’t celebrate Christmas, and see the use of the word “Christmas” as insensitive and intolerant. I wonder if their sensitivity and tolerance extends to the vast majority of Canadians who do celebrate Christmas. Bud Jellison

A candlelight vigil to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and commemorate World AIDS Day will be held Wednesday in Chilliwack. Colleen Crook, founder of the Gypsy Project Society organizing the event, said everyone is welcome. “Come join in our fight against HIV/ AIDS,” she said. The number of Canadians living with HIV, including AIDS, continues to rise, from an estimated 57,000 in 2005 to 65,000 in 2008, according to Statistics Canada. Getting a leg up on higher learning Katie Bartel The Progress Advanced placement may not be for every student, but for Jamie Wang it was one of the most beneficial things he did to prepare for university. Before Grade 12, Wang was able to get good grades by simply cramming for exams. Why bother studying regularly, he figured, when he was already getting good grades. But it was a bad habit that would not have served him well in university, said Wang, a 2008 Chilliwack secondary school graduate, who is now in his third year at the University of Alberta. The CSS advanced placement (AP) program forced Wang to stop the procrastination cycle and to study every day in order to succeed. A skill he took with him to university. Since introducing AP three years ago, CSS has made great strides. On average the highly academic courses, which include English, calculus, chemistry and biology, attract a full class of 20 to 24 students, most of whom are excelling on the year-end AP exams. Advanced placement courses are college-level courses, the highest level of education a student can take in high school. In AP, students can’t rely merely on memorizing facts or figures, they have to engage in intense discussion, solve problems collaboratively and write clearly and persuasively – just like in university. The classes instill time management skills, discipline, study habits, and confidence. And students who score a four or higher, out of five, on their final AP exam can be exempted from their first-year university course in the same subject if they so choose. Last year, four CSS students became AP scholars, scoring four or higher on three AP exams. And three of the four AP courses offered at CSS averaged grades between 4.2 and 4.4 overall, which translates to a grade point average of more than 86 per cent. “AP gives students a solid footing, a real foundation for when they go into university,” said AP chemistry teacher Chris Reilly. “A lot of these kids come out of school flunking and failing their first year university courses, but by taking AP, they’re putting them-

Driving in snow is different from driving on ice, but they share some similarities. This can prove dangerous if the car stalls in the middle of a road where visibility is poor. The best advice for driving in snow is to assess the situation. If it is falling heavily, it can be safer to stay home. If a person must drive, reduce speed and leave a very large buffer zone between the vehicles to allow for emergency stopping. When approaching intersections or stop signs, begin braking early to prevent skidding through. Also, be extremely cautious of other vehicles, as they may be experiencing trouble stopping as well.

Bruins stun stacked Winter Hawk squad

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress The Chilliwack Bruins did what few teams have been able to do this year. They beat the Portland Winter Hawks. The Bruins played their best game of the season Friday night at Prospera Centre, recording a 7-2 win over a stacked Portland squad (featuring 10 NHL draftees) that had lost just five games to date (21-4-01). After winning just two of their previous nine, it was a game that Chilliwack desperately needed, and they played like it. A grumpy Bruins squad took to the ice for period one, led by the particularly cranky Curt Gogol. On his first shift, Chilliwack’s penalty minute leader dropped the mitts with Portland’s biggest forward, challenging six-foot-six Tyler Jordan to a center-ice scrap. Gogol couldn’t even reach Jordan’s face with his punches, opting instead for a flurry of body blows. But the 19-year-old held his own and perhaps made a couple of his teammates play a couple inches taller. “He’s not afraid to do that and give him credit because he went after a really big guy,” said defenceman Jeff Einhorn. “He wanted to fire up the guys and show that he was willing to battle. The next time a guy needs to take a hit to make a play, he’s going to do it because he saw Gogol put his body on the line.” The Winter Hawks scored the only goal of the opening frame, with New York Islanders first rounder Nino Niederreiter pulling the trigger. Columbus Blue Jackets first rounder Ryan Johansen set him up, wheeling away from an Einhorn check in the left corner to find Niederreiter uncovered in front of the Chilliwack net. The 18-year-old snapped a blocker-side shot past Bruins netminder Lucas

Gore for his seventh of the season at 13:35. The Winter Hawks added to their lead just 38 seconds into period two on a goal by Swiss sniper Sven Bartschi. Picking off a Brandon Manning pass at the Portland blueline, Bartschi had a clear path to the Chilliwack net. Gore made the initial save but couldn’t corral the rebound, and Bartschi buried it for his team-leading 17th of the year. But even at that point, down 2-0 to maybe the best major junior team in Canada, there was a sense in the building that the game was far from over. “You’re never happy being down 2-0, but I thought they caught a couple breaks and we had a pretty good start,” Einhorn said. “We persevered. I can’t even count how many blocked shots we had and credit to Goresy for making some key saves.

With all the breaks going against the Bruins lately, it was nice to get one bounce going their way. “He’s been working real hard lately and it’s good to see him rewarded for it,” Einhorn said. remaining, cutting into the slot and going top shelf glove-side on Carruth for his 19th. Just over minute later, Steve Oursov picked Brad Ross’s pocket at the Portland blueline and came in on a short-handed breakaway. The Chilliwack native’s first of the year put the game away, and Brandon Magee and Sundher added late goals to wrap up the scoring. The Bruins host the Saskatoon Blades tomorrow night at 7 p.m. ● Friday night’s home game against the Kelowna Rockets includes the annual Teddy Bear/Touque Toss. Fans are encouraged to bring bears and touques to the game and throw them on the ice after the first Bruins goal. The items will be collected and donated to Chilliwack Community Services.

Sports Comeback continues Chilliwack’s Kelly VanderBeek has taken a big step in her comeback from a devastating knee injury. For the first time since crashing Dec. 17, 2009 on a ski hill in France, the former Olympian has been cleared for a return to the slopes. Her surgeon, Dr. Litchfield and physiotherapist, Kent Kobelka, gave her the thumbs up Saturday night, and she clicked into her bindings Sunday morning. It is a significant victory for a 27-year-old who, at one point, wasn’t sure she’d ever be able to ski again.

She was diagnosed with four damaged ligaments in her left knee — disastrous for anyone but particularly so for a high level athlete in a sport that demands so much from the knees. That the whole thing happened mere weeks before the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics rubbed a whole lot of salt on the wound. Since then, VanderBeek has kept busy working as an analyst on broadcasts, but her long-term goal remains the same. She’s after a comeback, and this is a very good start.

MURPHY Sara

(nee Penner) Sara Murphy was born April 18, 1921 in Waldheim, Saskatchewan and passed away Novem- MURPHY ber 18, 2010 in Chilliwack, B.C. She married Bill Murphy in Quesnel, BC in 1947, and raised a family together. She is survived by her ﬁve children, eight grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Bill and Sara lived in various places in B.C., but spent many of their years in Kamloops. Sara loved to spend her time with her family, cooking, gardening, scrabbling, and thoroughly enjoying life. She spent her most recent years in Chilliwack, B.C., and throughout all of her life remained an inspiration for her family. Sara radiated kindness and strength, and showed us all the importance of happiness and love for friends and family. Mom, we are so thankful for the lifetime we have shared with you, and you will always be the cherished Mother and Grandmother we were so blessed to have. A special thank you to the staff of the Waverly Seniors Village in Chilliwack who cared for our beloved Mother like a member of their own family, and the wonderful health care team at Chilliwack General Hospital who gave her the best care possible in her last days.

NORRISH William Edwin

After 93 fully lived years, Bill passed away peacefully in Chilliwack, BC on November 27, 2010, with NORRISH the loving support of his family and friends near and far. Survived by Miriam (nee Blackham), his wife of 70 years, his children Roger (Joan) Ed, Susan (Fred) Kleiss, Alex (Janice), and Sheena (Stan) Stenerson; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his brother Ron (Bertha). Bill was a proud member of Branch 57, Royal Canadian Legion in Mission, BC. He served in World War Two as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and saw duty in Alaska, England and Holland .Bill dedicated a significant part of his life to teaching. He first taught at Nicomen Island Elementary School. After his war service, he resumed teaching at Stave Falls and Hatzic elementary schools. He became the first principal of Edwin S. Richards Elementary School in 1950 and retired in that position in 1973. Bill received his Bachelor of Education Degree from UBC in November 1964. Bill enjoyed vegetable gardening, travelling and attending the five year Norrish family reunions. He loved the sport of curling and was a member of the Mission Curling Club from 1954 to 2005. The funeral service will be held on Sat., Dec 4th at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home at 12:30pm. Internment to follow at Hatzic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57 Poppy Fund or the Cascades Hospice in Chilliwack.
