Welcome February! Happy Valentine's Day! Valentine's Day reminds us to let the people we love know how much we appreciate them. Have fun making cards and writing Valentine's Day poems for your family, teachers, and friends! February is Black History Month, also known as African American History Month. Read books about African American heroes and be inspired! Parents and teachers can visit africanamericanhistorymonth.gov for teacher resources. Find more online resources on page 12. We have a lot to SMILE about in February because it's National Children's Dental Health Month! Read on page 10 about how to take care of your teeth and keep your smile beautiful. We'll also check out some strange and fascinating teeth in the animal world (page 11). It has been cold here in the North Carolina Triangle lately, but not nearly as cold as it is in the North Pole! Read about the amazing adventures of Matthew Henson, an African-American explorer who was a co-discoverer of the North Pole in 1909 (page 4). Even in the cold weather, there are lots of fun ways to get the family together for fun and exercise! On page 14 you'll find ideas to motivate your family to have fun staying healthy and fit: go for a hike on the local trails in Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough or Raleigh, go bowling, sign up for gymnastics classes, , have a jump roping contest, go sledding or tubing (if we get some snow), or play some music and dance! Heroes of History: Matthew Henson, African-American North Pole Explorer
Most scientists agree that Admiral Robert E. Peary, along with his assistant,
accomplished African-American explorer Matthew A. Henson, and four Inuit guides were the first people to reach the North Pole. Peary and Henson had come near the North Pole several times before. They finally reached it on April 6, 1909. Henson planted the U.S. flag and said, “We are first.” Freezeberg
In 1906, President Roosevelt awarded the Hubbard Medal to Peary for reaching the farthest point north, 175 miles (282 km) from the Pole. Inuit people had lived in the Arctic region near the North Pole for thousands of years, but some think it unlikely they ventured all the way to the North Pole because of its distance from the open water where the Inuit hunted and fished.
Having come close to reaching the North Pole three years before, Peary and Henson set out again in 1909.

On April 6, Henson was acting as the trailbreaker, traveling ahead of the other members of the expedition. When Henson’s compass began to act strangely, he stopped and waited for the rest of the group. He had arrived at a point, which according to his latitude and longitude measurements, was the North Pole. Though he arrived 45 minutes ahead of Peary, for years Peary was generally regarded as the first person to reach the North Pole.

Henson’s parents died when he was a young boy. At age 12, he went to sea working as a cabin boy. Eventually, Henson got a job working as a clerk in Washington, D.C. and met Robert E. Peary. In 1888, Peary hired Henson to be his personal assistant on an expedition to Nicaragua. After that, Peary hired Henson to join him on his next expeditions to the Arctic. Henson and Peary went on seven voyages together over a period of nearly 23 years. Henson served as a navigator, carpenter, mechanic and craftsman, and he traded with Inuit and learned their language.

In 1944, Matthew Henson was awarded a Congressional medal for his work on the Peary expedition. In 1945 he received a medal from the U.S. Navy, and in 1954 he received an invitation from President Eisenhower and met the president at the White House. Henson died in 1955 (at the age of 88), but he was later awarded the Hubbard Medal (in 2000). “The Hubbard Medal is awarded for distinction in exploration, discovery, and research. Henson embodies what this award stands for. The honor is long overdue,” said National Geographic Society president John Fahey at the celebration. Use the secret code to discover the hidden words.

From a distance, Ceres might look a bit like any other planet you might see. It’s spherical, after all, and that’s one of the biggest requirements of planethood. But put it next to any other planet and you would quickly see that it is seriously tiny. It’s not even 1/5th the size of Mercury, which is the tiniest planet in the Solar System. This small size is one of the reasons why Ceres is classified as a dwarf planet.

Still, amongst the other asteroids, Ceres is a giant. Because of this, it is considered both a dwarf planet and the largest asteroid—the only dwarf planet/asteroid in our solar system. It is also the closest dwarf planet to Earth. The others, including famed Pluto, are all near or beyond the orbit of Neptune.

But it’s really hard to see. It’s tiny, after all, and it’s also not especially bright. We haven’t really had a chance to take a close look. That is about to change!

After over seven years of travel, a trusty spacecraft named Dawn is fast approaching Ceres. It has already begun to take pictures. As it gets closer and closer, those pictures will become clearer and clearer. It has already revealed a cratered surface. By March, it will enter into orbit around Ceres, giving us all kinds of new information about this mysterious little world.

Its location, floating amongst thousands of bits of other space rock in the Asteroid Belt, is another clue that it hasn’t reached full planethood. For a space object to be honored with the title ‘planet,’ it has to have enough gravity to clear away all the junk around it. But, alas, poor Ceres can’t muster that kind of gravitational strength.

Penguins Penguins are found on every continent in the southern hemisphere. There are 17 different species of penguins! Most penguins live in Antarctica, while others live on the shores of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, on the coasts of South America, and on the Galapagos Islands of the Pacific.

The Emperor penguin is the largest penguin species. Emperor penguins grow to be four feet tall and weigh up to 60 pounds. Emperor penguins live in the Antarctic.

The male keeps the egg warm until it hatches, which takes about 64 days. He is very careful not to drop the egg. The male Emperor penguins huddle together to keep warm. Temperatures are as low as -70ºF!
While the male Emperor penguin takes care of the egg, the mother penguin makes the long journey back to the sea to find food. When she returns, it is time for the baby to hatch, or it may have already hatched by the time the mother penguin returns. Then the male penguin heads for the sea to eat. He has fasted (had no food) while keeping the egg warm for more than two months! Some of the other penguin species can lay more than one egg. For example, the Adélie penguin lays one or two eggs. Before laying the eggs, the female and male Adélie penguins make a nest by gathering stones in their beaks and making them into a pile. Like the Emperor penguin, the male Adélie penguin guards the nest while the female journeys to the sea to find food. The female returns after two weeks and then changes places with the male, taking her spot on the nest. They will switch places one more time, before the baby penguins hatch from the eggs. Male and female adult Adélie penguins look alike; they both have a black tail that looks like a tuxedo! Penguins are birds, but they don’t fly in the air. They spend most of their life "flying" under water! They can swim at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Their wings are flippers, which help them dive. They can dive 30 feet underwater before returning to the surface of the sea. Sometimes, they come out of the sea with such speed and power that they soar into the air, like porpoises. When they are on land, penguins stand up like a person and waddle around. Sometimes they lay on their bellies and use their flippers and feet like oars to row around on the ice — this is called tobogganing.

To learn more, families may enjoy watching documentary movies about penguins, including The March of the Penguins (2005), and Adventures of the Penguin King (2013). Penguins in Antarctica have black backs and white stomachs, which helps them regulate their body temperature.
When they are cold, they face their backs toward the sun to help warm themselves; if they feel warm they turn their white stomachs toward the sun, which reflects the heat and helps them cool down.

Keeping Kids Active During the Winter Months If we get some snow, (remember the big snow storm last year in mid-February?), find an ideal hill for sledding or tubing. Climbing back up the hill after each run is great exercise!
When the weather turns cold and it gets dark early, keeping kids active can take some creativity. Here are some ideas for keeping your family moving all winter long: 1. Discover Indoor Facilities Visit an indoor pool, ice skating rink or basketball court at a local gym, school, or community center. Sign your child up for classes at Chapel Hill Gymnastics (see page 7). Go for an outing to Mardi Gras Bowling (see page 12). Bowling is fun for the whole family and it's a great way to get indoor exercise together with your kids.
5. Visit a Zoo or a Farm Zoos and farms are fun winter destinations for learning how life changes through the seasons. Kids can also learn how animals are taken care of during winter. 6. Sign Up for Active Classes Enroll your child in an instructional group class. Try dancing, gymnastics, martial arts, fencing, indoor swimming lessons - anything that will get your child excited about staying active.
2. Dance, Dance, Dance! Encourage your child to choose the music, then crank it up and dance away! March, box step, bounce, spin, shake it ‌ it's a great way to burn calories. Sign up for classes at Triangle Youth Ballet (www.triangleyouthballet.org). 3. Take it Outside Even in the winter we have lots of warm days here in Chapel Hill, Durham and the North Carolina Triangle, so get the whole family outside for a walk in the neighborhood, a hike at a nearby nature area, or just go to your favorite playground for some fresh air! 4. Hit the Trails for Outdoor Winter Sports Have a family adventure and visit the North Carolina or Virginia mountains for snow trekking, skiing, snowboarding, or tubing with the kids for a fun aerobic workout.
Alpacas live high in the mountains where it is very cold. They have soft, warm fur to keep them warm. Help the baby alpaca find its mother.
7. Find Middle Ground Pry kids away from the TV and video games by establishing a weekends-only rule (and keep them so busy having active fun on the weekends that they won't even miss the TV and video time!) If kids do watch TV or play video games, set time limits, and encourage your children to take a break from the screen and do jumping jacks, sit-ups, and pushups. Have your own informal jump-roping Olympics -- see who can set your family's jump-roping record!
