ANIMAL KINGDOM
Howl-O-Ween Nights at the Conservators Center
Arthur Tiger playing with a pumpkin. Photo: Stephanie Butzer.
What’s THAT creeping through the trees? What has eyes that shine in the light of the setting sun? What’s that howling in the dark?
It’s just the friendly critters at the Conservators Center in Burlington NC, down the road from Chapel Hill! The weather is starting to cool down, and you know what that means: delicious food, wonderful smells, warm clothes, colorful leaves, awesome costumes, and Howl-O-Ween at the Conservators Center. Every year in October, the winding paths of this exotic animal conservancy turn into a spooky, haunted trail filled with some of the most breathtaking animals you’ve ever seen. Howl-O-Ween Trick or Treat tours are held in the evening (on October 15, 22, and 29, 2016), as the sun is setting. This is the time of day when the critters at the Conservators Center are the most active. Lions love roaring to end the day, and leopards come out to prowl in the tall grass in their habitat. Tigers emerge from their dens to greet you, and wolves prance around their wooded enclosure, happy to FINALLY have some colder weather! The best part? You’ll have a funny, entertaining guide to tell you all kinds of fun, spooky things about the wonderful animals at the Center. You can wear your favorite Halloween costume when you visit the animals, too! Imagine the stories you can tell your classmates on Monday morning. Visit www.ConservatorsCenter.org for tour reservations. Also mark your calendar for the Conservators Center's annual Pumpkin Prowl on November 12th, 2016 (with a make-up date of November 19th in the event of bad weather.) The Mars Rovers: Curiosity
SPACE EXPLORERS
high, dangerous levels of radiation. NASA will use Curiosity’s radiation data to design missions to be safer for human explorers.
Curiosity is about the size of a small SUV.
Curiosity landed on Mars in Gale Crater. This crater is special because it has a tall mountain in the middle. The mountain has many layers of rock. Each layer is made of different minerals from different time periods. These minerals could tell scientists about the history of water on Mars.
Because Curiosity is so big, she also has bigger wheels than the previous rovers. This helps her to roll over rocks and sand without getting stuck. However, even on a long driving day, she still only travels about 660 feet.
The rover uses many scientific instruments to study the rocks in Gale Crater. Curiosity used her drill to make a hole in a rock that once was mud at the bottom of a lake. One of her other instruments studied the powder drilled from the rock. This information helped scientists learn that the Gale crater had ingredients that ancient life would have needed to survive.
At 20 inches in diameter, Curiosity’s wheels are much bigger than the wheels of previous rovers.
Curiosity brought 17 cameras with her to the Red Planet—more than any other rover. She uses some of her cameras to take photos of her journey. Cameras also act as Curiosity’s eyes, helping her to spot and stay away from danger. One of Curiosity’s cameras— at the end of her 7- foot-long robotic arm—even acts like a sort of “selfie stick.” She can hold the camera two meters away and take a selfie to send back to Earth!

On Earth, where there is water, there are living things. We know that Mars had water a long time ago. But did it also have other conditions life needs? To find out, NASA sent the Curiosity rover to Mars. Curiosity is the largest robot to ever land on another planet.
Scientists sent Curiosity to Mars to measure lots of other things, too—including radiation. Radiation is a type of energy that can come from the sun. It travels in high-energy waves that can(1/4 page V is 5 in. x 6 in be harmful Source: NASA Space Place, http://spaceplace.nasa. to living things. Communicating with Curiosity - By Teagan Wall, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
If you want to talk to a friend on Earth, you just pick up the phone and call them. But how do scientists communicate with the rovers on Mars? It takes a lot of teamwork! With cell phones and the internet, we’re used to communicating with anyone, anywhere, quickly and easily. But how do scientists communicate with things that aren’t on our planet—such as the Curiosity rover on Mars? This communication beyond Earth is a bit more complicated. We communicate with spacecraft using radio signals. Radio signals move at the speed of light. However, they have a long way to travel. Even when it is closest to Earth, Mars is still about 35 million miles away. And sometimes it’s much, much farther! If you sent a text message to Mars, it would take, on average, about 14 minutes for it to get there. This long distance makes talking with robots on other planets difficult. Imagine driving in a video game and waiting 28 minutes to see your car make a turn! It would take forever to drive the rover one turn at a time. Instead, we send Curiosity all the instructions for the day at once. Most of the rover’s daily tasks—like taking photographs and zapping rocks—are planned out in advance. Some days we can’t directly talk to the rovers. We use antennas to send and receive signals, but Mars and Earth are both constantly spinning. On Earth, the antennas are located around the world so that at least one is always facing Mars. About half of the time, though, Curiosity's location on Mars is not facing toward Earth. During these times, Curiosity can’t send signals directly to our antennas.
Information takes anywhere from four to 24 minutes to get from the Earth to Mars. Credit: NASA
Orbiters are special spacecraft that spend their time continuously traveling around an object, such as a moon or a planet. There are several orbiters traveling around Mars. When Curiosity isn’t facing Earth, it can send a message to one of these orbiters. Then, once the orbiter reaches the Earth-facing side of Mars, it sends the signal. Each day, Curiosity sends information to at least one Mars orbiter, and the orbiter sends that information to Earth. Hurray for teamwork!
So how does the rover send its messages to Earth? Through an orbiter!

CAREERS
What's it Like to be a Orthodontist? Meet Dr. Lenise Clifton, DDS, MS
October is National Orthodontic Health Month
October is National Orthodontic Health Month, so it's a great time to learn about what it's like to be an orthodontist, and how orthodontists help their patients to have their best and healthiest smile. We talked with local orthodontist Dr, Lenise Clifton, DDS, MS about her career as an orthodontist with Clifton & Mauney in Chapel Hill. Dr. Clifton chose orthodontics for her career because of the positive effect braces had on her own self-esteem. She loves science and art, and she found that dentistry uses both equally. Dr. Clifton is the mother of three children, and she works closely with her husband, pediatric dentist Dr. Charles Mauney, DDS, at Clifton & Mauney. She is a member and board certified by both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Orthodontics. Dr. Clifton also is a member of the North Carolina Dental Society and the Durham-Orange Dental Society. She enjoys being an orthodontist and pediatric dentist and orthodontist because, “There’s always something new to learn, and it’s always exciting. . . . We make a difference in the way people smile and feel about themselves."
When were you first interested in becoming an orthodontist?
After I completed orthodontic treatment myself, prior to high school, I felt inspired to become an orthodontist. I wanted to help others the way my orthodontist helped me!
What career did you imagine for yourself when you were a child? I wanted to be a librarian.
What was your favorite subject in school? I love school, especially science.
What does it take to become an orthodontist?
What do you do every day? Describe a typical day on the job. Each day is a new adventure to meet people and an opportunity to watch people change and to see progress to occur. During a typical day I am offered the chance to help patients begin their orthodontic journey and a chance to celebrate the patients who have completed the process.
Dr. Lenise Clifton, center, next to Dr. Charles Mauney and the friendly staff of Clifton & Mauney in Chapel Hill.
What’s the best part of your job?
I love orthodontics because of the positive effect braces had on my self-esteem. I am actually a pediatric dentist and orthodontist. To become both of these I completed an undergraduate degree at Centenary College of Louisiana, followed by four years of dental school at UNC Chapel Hill and 5 additional years of specialized training in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.
What advice would you give to kids who are interested in pursuing a career as an orthodontist?
I love getting to know our patients and their families. Working with our team toward a common goal is awesome. We all love helping others.
Always work hard in school and be dedicated to your studies. Observe dentist as the work and learn all you can about dentistry. Being artistic and crafty has helped me too!
What are your favorite hobbies or things to do when you are not working?
I love to sew, especially quilts. I also paint and draw. ORTHODONTISTS HAVE BEEN STRAIGHTENING Thank you, Dr. Clifton, for sharing Reading, playing the piano, singing (in my church choir), TEETH FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS. Orthodontics was us established as the first dentallike specialtyto in 1900. with what it's be an growing roses and arranging flowers bring me joy. orthodontist! Linea in Monet's Garden
BOOK NOOK
By Christina Björk; illustrated by Lena Anderson
"Original and charming."—New Yorker Linea in Monet's Garden captivates children and adults alike, introducing children to painter Claude Monet's art, as well as details of Monet's life, his paintings, his family, and his home at Giverny, near Paris. Through the pictures and the story, readers feel as though they are traveling along with Linnea and Mr. Bloom to France to see Monet's gardens and his paintings. Linnea and Mr. Bloom visit Monet's gardens, and even stand on the same little Japanese bridge that Monet painted so often in his pictures. In Paris, Linnea gets to see many of the real paintings, and some of the places that inspired his paintings, and now she can understand what it means to be called an Impressionist. She also learns a lot about Monet's life in the pink house where he lived with his eight children. Twenty-five years after its original publication, this celebration of the wonder of Claude Monet's art is available once again to inspire a new generation of readers. Grade level: Kindergarten - 3rd grade, and art lovers of all ages. A live action animated version of Linea in Monet's Garden also is available on DVD.

Musnet: The Mouse of Monet By Kickliy Musnet is the story of a young boy mouse in France who travels the countryside looking for work, when he happens upon Monet's garden. There he avoids Monet's cat, meets a friend, takes on a job and becomes inspired to learn to paint. Will he paint in the classical ways, or in the new style of the impressionist? Drawn and painted in a beautiful, lush style, in a comic book-style format that will delight children and grown-ups alike. This is the first book in a series, with three additional soon-to-bepublished books following the continuing adventures of Musnet.
Monet and the Impressionists for Kids: Their Lives and Ideas, 21 Activities By Carol Sabbeth Monet and the Impressionists for Kids invites children to delight in artist Claude Monet's beautiful gardens, Mary Cassatt’s mothers and children, Auguste Renoir’s dancing couples, and Paul Gaugin’s island scenes. Twenty-one hands-on activities explore Monet’s quick shimmering brush strokes, Paul Cézanne’s brilliant rectangles of color, Georges Seurat’s pointillism, and Edgar Degas’ sculpture-like circles of dancers. The book shows kids how the artists’ friendships helped them through repeated rejection by the Parisian art world, and shows how they lived, painted, and enjoyed the vibrant life Paris at the approach of the 20th century. A resource section guides readers to related art museums and art websites around the world.

The Art of Claude Monet
ALL ABOUT ART Claude Monet was a famous French artist who is known as the "father of impressionism." Claude Monet was born in
Paris on November 14, 1840, and grew up near the sea on the Normandy coast in France.
"I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers." - Claude Monet
As a young teenager, he studied art and other subjects in school, and by the age of 15 he had developed a local reputation as a caricaturist. His caricature drawings were displayed in the window of a local frame maker's shop, where people began to recognize their fellow villagers in the drawings. After his mother died when he was17 years old, Monet's aunt encouraged him in his efforts to become an artist. His artwork attracted the interest of landscape painter Eugene Boudin, who introduced Monet to plein-air painting. Plein-air is French for “open air” and refers to paintings created outdoors.

He later was drafted and served in the French military, but upon his return to Paris he began painting again. He married Camille Doncieux in Paris in 1870, and over the years they had eight children. Monet became known as an "Impressionist," a term taken from his painting, "Impression, Sunrise." His paintings had an unfinished look, which was very different from the paintings of artists who lived before him. His brush strokes were lively and spontaneous, capturing the changing light and shadow of the day, and the feeling of the moment. He applied the paint with thick broad brush strokes, often mixing colors on the canvas. Monet most often chose to paint landscapes and leisure activities— Water Lilies, Claude Monet, 1919. everyday activities that (at the time) were considered to be unworthy subjects for art, compared to the highly respected religious and mythological subjects.

Sometimes Monet would paint the same scene over and over again, but at different times of day or in different seasons. Examples of these works include his famous series of water lily paintings, as well as his paintings of haystacks, morning views of the Seine river, the Gare Saint-Lazare train station, and the Cathedral of Rouen, France.
Like many other Impressionist artists, Monet had little success in his early years. Impressionists were initially criticized for what was thought to be their unworthy subjects, unrealistic colors, and loose, seemingly unfinished brushwork.

Public opinion of Impressionism became more favorable in the mid-1880s, and Monet’s paintings began to sell well. By the early 1900's, Monet was one of the world’s wealthiest artists. Claude Monet died in Giverny, France on December 5, 1926. His artwork continues to be an inspiration for artists around the world.
