Visiting an Asteroid - By Teagan Wall, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
You probably knew that our solar system has a sun and eight planets, but did you know that there are also millions of asteroids?
Scientists are investigating one of these asteroids, called Bennu, to learn more about the history of our solar system. Our solar system is a busy place. We have the sun, eight planets, at least five dwarf planets, and more than 170 moons. But we also have millions of comets and asteroids. One of these asteroids is named Bennu. Bennu is large, and it orbits the sun near the Earth’s orbit. This asteroid is also very old. Scientists want to study Bennu to learn about the early solar system.
NASA scientists will study Bennu with a spacecraft named OSIRIS-REx.
OSIRIS-REx stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer. That long name means the mission will do several important things. For example, OSIRIS-REx will perform experiments to see what Bennu is made of. This is cool because the materials in an asteroid could one day be useful resources here on Earth! OSIRIS-REx will also explore the asteroid’s surface and learn about the size and shape of Bennu. This and other information will help scientists understand what might happen if an asteroid collides with Earth.
Artist’s conception of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft at Bennu. Image credit: NASA/Goddard/University of Arizona
All of this exciting work will take a long time—almost seven years—to complete. OSIRISREx launched on September 8, 2016. However, Bennu is really far away. OSIRIS-REx won’t arrive there until 2018. When it finally arrives, OSIRIS-REx will begin mapping the asteroid’s surface. It will take a whopping 505 days for OSIRIS-REx to complete this map! Later, in July 2020, OSIRIS-REx will fly very close to Bennu. It will use a robotic arm to collect some rocks and dust from the asteroid’s surface. OSIRIS-REx will send that sample back to Earth. But since Bennu is so far away, the sample won’t arrive on Earth until sometime in 2023. No matter what we discover on Bennu, we are sure to learn more about the history of our vast and busy solar system! Lift Off! NASA’s OSIRIS-REx speeds toward asteroid "Bennu." OSIRIS-REx's lift off at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on September 8, 2016 began a journey that could revolutionize our understanding of the early solar system. Image: NASA

The Arctic Fox
ANIMAL KINGDOM
Have you ever seen an Arctic fox? Now you can meet an Arctic fox in person, when you visit Caspar Arctic Fox, one of the newest residents at the Conservators Center (in Burlington, NC). Read on to learn more about Caspar Arctic fox below. Arctic foxes — also called polar foxes, blue foxes, or white foxes — are not much larger than a house cat, but they are tough survivors, extremely well-adapted for their harsh native climate, where temperatures may sometimes drop to a frigid -58 degrees Fahrenheit. Arctic foxes stay warm in very cold temperatures thanks to their thick fur coat, small ears, rounded body, and short legs, adaptations which reduce heat loss. Their long thick furry tails keep them warm like a blanket, wrapped around their faces when they sleep. Arctic foxes also have thick fur on the pads of their feet, to keep them warm and to keep them from slipping on the frozen ground. They have an excellent sense of hearing and smell which helps them find small prey under the snow. They also like to eat berries when they can find them in the Summer.
Range: The Arctic tundras of Canada, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. The Arctic is the northernmost place on Earth. The land of the Arctic is called the tundra is open land with no trees, and the ground is frozen most of the year. In the summer, the top melts and the tundra is very wet, dotted with moss and some grass and plants.
Arctic foxes are the only canid species whose fur color changes with the season!
In winter, the arctic fox’s fur is white or blue-gray, and blends into the frozen white landscape as a winter camouflage. Their fur sheds into a gray-brown by summer, blending into the summer landscape. Arctic foxes measure up to 23 inches long with a 13-inch tail. Males weigh around 16 to 28 lbs, while females are smaller, weighing around 6.5 to 17 lbs. Baby foxes are called kits, pups, or cubs. Some of the other Arctic animals that live in the Arctic along with the Arctic fox are the caribou, snowy owl, harp seal, beluga whale, killer whale, walrus, narwhal, snowshoe hare, musk ox, and puffin. Complete the Arctic Animals activity on page 6!
Look at the difference in the Arctic fox's fur in the winter (white) and the summer (when their fur changes to a gray-brown color). Left: Young Arctic fox kits playing on the rocks in the summer. In the winter their fur will be pure white to blend in with the snow and frozen landscape of the Arctic tundra.
Meet Caspar Arctic Fox at the Conservators Center in Burlington, NC
Caspar Arctic Fox
arrived at his new home at the Conservators Center recently, after his owner became ill and chose to surrender the fox. The Center renovated a space to accommodate all the digging they anticipate from a fox resident. As he checked out his new home, Caspar enjoyed hiding some of his food for later, moving the mulch around to redecorate, and watching the dogs play and interact with the people in the adjacent yard. He walked calmly around his new residence and smelled the ground, platform and logs. He paused at some spots as if he was trying to figure out what in the world could have made that smell. Casper Arctic Fox greets his friends with a warm smile! Photo: Kathy Patterson
A visit to the Conservators Center is a great Valentine's gift for the whole family! Within a few minutes he curled up in one of his possible dens and took a little snooze. Then he enjoyed basking on his top platform, more than eight feet off the ground, and closely watching everything happening around him. He has settled into his new home and he would love to meet you when you visit the Conservators Center! Learn more at www.conservatorscenter.org.

Wi ld e st Weather in the World! From severe thunderstorms to extreme drought, and from frozen mountaintops to steamy swamps, did you know the United States has the world’s wildest weather? It’s a stew of extremes: hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, floods, wildfires, blizzards, heat waves and cold snaps. The U.S. is uniquely situated about halfway between the equator and the North Pole, and it sits between two oceans. The clash between cold, dry, arctic air from Canada and warm, moist, tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico helps fuel the massive storms that move across the country during the year, bringing everything from blinding blizzards to flooding rains and destructive winds. The U.S. also sees large variations in temperature. Along the north coast of Alaska the average year-round temperature is a chilling 12°F, while in the Florida Keys the average year-round temperature is a balmy 77°F! Big temperature differences even happen in the same place. In 1936 in North Dakota, the temperatures ranged from a frigid low of -60°F in February to a scalding 121°F in July. In Spearfish, South Dakota, Jan. 22,1943, was a wild day. In just two minutes, the temperature shot up from -4°F at 7:30 a.m. to 45°F at 7:32 a.m. Incredibly, the temperatures warmed 49 degrees in just two minutes! By 9 a.m., the temperature had warmed to 54°F, only to drop back to -4°F by 9:27 a.m.
Along the south coast of Alaska, 304 of 365 days a year are cloudy, but in Yuma, Arizona, the days are sunny 90 percent of the time. The driest place in the U.S. is Calexico, which sits south of the Salton Sea in California, near the Mexican border. It receives an average of only 1.7 inches of rain a year. In contrast, Kauai, Hawaii, averages 60 inches of rain per year. Now, that’s extreme! If it’s snow you like, grab your winter clothes and skis and head to the western U.S., where snowfall in the high mountains ranges from 300-700 inches a year. In 1921, over six feet of snow (75.8 inches) fell at Silver Lake, Colorado, in a 24-hour period. Think of all the snow forts and snowmen you could make! If you like wind, hold onto your hat and visit Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, where gusts average more than 35 mph during the year. In fact, in April 1934, Mt. Washington recorded a wind gust of 231 mph, the highest gust ever recorded in the United States. In addition to wind, Mt. Washington averages 244 cloudy days and 260 inches of snow in a typical year! Although most of us don’t experience frequent weather extremes, it’s fun to learn about places that do! Parents and teachers can learn more about the weather at www.weather.gov, and download Owlie Skywarn’s Weather Book for children about storm safety (from hurricanes and tornadoes to lightning, floods and winter storms) at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/brochures/ OwlieSkywarnBrochure.pdf. - By Donna Franklin, Program Specialist with the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Cherries are a healing food! They are a good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin A, and a rich source of antioxidants, queritrin, a flavonoid, and ellagic acid. These micronutrients in cherries are like superpowers to help your body stay strong and fight illnesses. The anthocyanin and bioflavonoids in cherries also help eliminate migraine headaches. Cherries contain the antioxidant melatonin, which helps you get a good night's sleep! Did you know that something so naturally delicious could also be so good for your body?

FEBRUARY 2017 Flick Picks The LEGO Batman Movie
Rock Dog
In Theaters: February 10, 2017
In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that crew – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure: The LEGO Batman Movie. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and learn to lighten up a little. Starring Will Arnett as the voice of LEGO Batman (reprising his role from The LEGO Movie). Also starring the voices of Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Cera. Rated PG (for rude humor and some action) 1 hr. 30 min. (Warner Bros. Pictures / LEGO System AS / Vertigo Entertainment).
(In theaters: February 24, 2017)
Rock Dog follows the adventures of Bodi, a wide-eyed Tibetan Mastiff (dog) after a radio falls from the sky, opening up a world of music and leading him to leave home for the big city to become a musician. For the Tibetan Mastiffs living on Snow Mountain, a dog’s life is simple: Guard a peaceful village of wool-making sheep from a pack of wolf thugs. To avoid distractions, Mastiff leader Khampa banned all music from the mountain. But his own son Bodi (Luke Wilson) discovers a radio dropped by a passing airplane, and is determined to be a rock ‘n’ roll star. Bodi heads to the city to put a band together and find a way to defeat the wolves’ plot to take Snow Mountain. Rated PG (for action and language). 1 hr. 20 min. (Mandoo Pictures and Huayi Brothers).
