All About the TOUR de FRANCE
The Tour de France is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world! In July each year, top cyclists from many different countries compete in this 3-week long Grand Tour bicycle race that takes them on winding hilly roads, from Northern France all the way across the country down to the sea and the South of France, through many steep mountain passes, and finally to Paris.
World-Famous Cycling Race Celebrates its 104th Year
The first Tour de France took place in 1903. The Tour de France will take place this year from July 1st to July 23rd. The Tour de France takes place over 23 days and covers over 2,200 miles. Each year the race takes a different route, covering a large geographic in France and also several neighboring countries.
Huge crowds of people line the course to cheer on the cyclists. It is expected that around 15 million spectators will line the route of this year's Tour. Although the Tour de France route changes from year to year, the finish is always in Paris with a spectacular sprint down the ChampsÉlysées and past the Arc de Triomphe - an appropriate triumphant finishing place!

This year there are 9 flat stages, 5 hilly stages, 5 mountain stages, and 2 individual time-trial stages, with 2 rest days. 2017 Tour de France Map, Wikimedia Commons
Each day of the race is known as a ‘Stage’, and stages can last up to six hours. At the end of each day the rider who crosses the finish line first is the ‘Stage Winner’ and gets to go up onto the podium. In total, there are 21 stages over the 23 days, so the riders only get two rest days over the whole race! The lead rider gets to wear the yellow jersey. Cyclists in the Tour de France race in teams, sponsored by companies/organizations who help to pay the teams' expenses to participate in the race (for example, the expense of the teams' travel, clothing/gear, bicycles, vehicles, hotels, coaches). In 2016, Briton Chris Froome (born in Kenya to British parents) won the Tour de France. He also won the Tour de France in 2014 and 2015! Will Chris Froome continue his winning streak in July 2017?
Tune in to the Tour de France on July 23rd to watch the final sprint in Paris !
The Tour de France 2017 Route In 2017 the race will begin in Düsseldorf, Germany on Saturday July 1st. The first Stage is called Le Grande Départ, and big parties are held to celebrate the beginning of the race. This year the first stage will be a time trial, which means each rider is individually timed riding around a 14km course (more than 8.5 miles), to see who has the fastest time.
The stages take place in many different parts of France, along flat, hilly, and winding, climbing mountain roads, through towns, past farms, across different geographical regions of France. On two of the days the riders and their bikes have to fly across France to get from the end of one stage to the start of the next. The longest stage will be Stage 19 on July 21st, when the riders cycle over 138 miles from Embrun to Salon-de-Provence in Southern France.
The 104th Tour de France route also goes through three neighboring countries: Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg. For the first time since 1992, the 2017 Tour de France route will include the five main mountain ranges of France: the Vosges, the Jura, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central and the Alps. Have you ever ridden a bike up a big hill? Racing up mountain roads is tough work!
Tour de France Winners' Jerseys
The Stage Winner is not the only rider who gets to go on the podium each day. There are other winners too, with each getting to wear a special color cycling shirt known as a ‘jersey.’ The jerseys are made of a special material that keeps the rider cool. Yellow Jersey -Each day, the cyclist
with the fastest overall time from the very start of the first day of the race, gets to wear the prestigious yellow jersey.
Upon crossing the finish line of each stage, each cyclist's time is recorded. At the end of each day, the stage times from the start of the race are added up for each cyclist. The cyclist with the fastest overall time from the start is awarded the yellow jersey to wear on the next stage. The overall winner of the Tour de France is the rider with the fastest time for all the stages put together.
Green Jersey - "Sprinter's Jersey" The green jersey is worn by
the best sprinter and time trialist.
White jersey - The white jersey is given to the best young rider (under 26 years old) overall.
Polka-Dot Jersey - Best Climber, or "King of the Mountains"
The best climber, or the "King of the Mountains" wears the red and white polkadot jersey. The King of the Mountains is the rider who has the most points from the mountain stages. The steeper the mountain, the more points a rider can get.

Tour de France Fun Facts
The Tour de France is a Grand Tour race, one of the world's longest bicycle race that takes place over 23 days and covers over 2,200 miles. Each year the race takes a different route, but the finish is always in Paris with the final sprint down the Champs-Élysées.
good view. With all of the crowds and excitement, the atmosphere is often festive, like a parade.
Before the cyclists ride past the crowd, there are many cars and vans advertising the race sponsors. These advertising vehicles can take almost an hour to pass by, and are known as “the caravan.”
The first ever Tour de France took place in 1903.
Often they throw out souvenirs at the crowd, and everyone tries to catch something. Once the caravan has gone by, the police clear the road and then the cyclists ride past, often in a peloton (main group of cyclists).
The 100th Tour de France didn’t take place 100 years after the first race. This is because the Tour de France was canceled during World War 1 and World War II. The 100th Tour de France did not take place until 2013. The Tour de France is also known as “Le Tour.” The first day of the race is called “Le Grand Depart,” which means “the big start”. For 2017 the Grand Depart is in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Tour de France doesn’t just take place in France. In most years it has some stages in other countries (for example, Germany, Belgium, Corsica, the UK, and the Netherlands). In the early years of the Tour, riders rode individually and in some years the cyclists were not allowed to ride together! In the modern Tour de France, the cyclists ride in teams, and they ride bunched together (this is known as the Peloton).
"Le Petit Prince" Caravan car.
Some of the people whose homes, businesses or farms are along the Tour de France route decorate their buildings and homes, and paint the roads and display yellow bikes on the side of the road. Some farmers have even painted their sheep, or ploughed bicycle shapes into their crops!
Each day of the race is known as a ‘stage’, and each stage can last up to six hours. At the end of each day the rider who crosses the finish line first is the ‘Stage Winner’ and gets to go up onto the podium. In total, there are 21 stages over the 23 days, so the riders only get two rest days over the whole race!
Each team has a "team car" in which their coach, doctor, and bicycle mechanic ride in. The team car is the team's mobile base on the road from which the team's coach directs the team's strategy, and the team's mechanic and doctor look after the riders. Each team also has a team leader. The team leader is the team's best rider, for whom the rest of the team is working to achieve a goal like the overall victory, or the points jersey. The Stage Winner is not the only rider who gets to go on the podium each day. There are other winners too, with each getting to wear a special colored cycling jersey (shirt). The overall race leader gets to wear the yellow jersey. The overall winner of the Tour de France is the rider with the quickest time for all the stages put together. There is also a green jersey, a white jersey and a red and white polka-dotted jersey (see p. 4). It is possible for a rider who has not been in the lead, and never worn the yellow jersey, to win the overall Tour de France by cycling very fast on the last day. This has only happened twice so far – in 1947 and 1968. The youngest Tour de France winner was Henri Comet – he was only 19 years old when he won in 1904. The oldest person to win the Tour de France was Firmin Lambot, who was 36 years and 4 months old when he won in 1922. The rider who has taken the most time to complete the race is known as the ‘lanterne rouge’ or red lantern, named after the red lights on the back of a car so it can be seen at night.
Some stages are flat and fast, and others are mountainous. There are several stages which are called time trials. In a time trial the cyclists don’t all start the race at the same time. Instead, each sets off with a one minute gap between each rider. Each rider is timed, and the fastest person to complete the course is the stage winner. Sometimes a rider will cycle so fast that they catch up to the person in front. Hundreds of thousands of people line the route of the race each day, and some people camp for up to a week to be sure to get a
French riders have won the most Tour de France races (21 cyclists have won 36 tours between them). Belgian riders are in 2nd place, with 18 wins, and the Spanish are in 3rd place with 12 wins.

Since 2014 there has also been a women’s race on the final day of the Tour de France, called “Le Course.” Millions of people around the world watch the Tour de France on TV and online, especially for the final stage of the race as it heads into Paris.

The Tour de France has continued throughout the years, and while the cyclists' clothing and bicycle technology has changed over the years, this tough race remains the ultimate challenge of a cyclist's endurance, skill, training, persistence, and determination.

People in France celebrate the birth of democracy in their country on July 14, a day known as Bastille Day. On July 14, 1789, French citizens rebelled against the King [which KING?] and stormed into the Bastille Prison to free political prisoners. By storming the prison, the French citizens took the first step toward democracy. In France, the Bastille Day also is referred to as La Fete Nationale, and is marked with parades, celebrations and fireworks.

Twenty Years Ago on Mars…
Sojourner gathered data on Martian rocks and soil. The rover also carried cameras. In the three months that Sojourner operated on Mars, the rover took more than 550 photos!
By Linda Hermans-Killiam, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Twenty years ago, on July 4, 1997, NASA's Mars Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. It landed in an ancient flood plain that is now dry and covered with rocks. Pathfinder’s mission was to study the Martian climate, atmosphere and geology. At the same time, the mission was also testing lots of new technologies. For example, the Pathfinder mission tried a brand-new way of landing on Mars. After speeding into the Martian atmosphere, Pathfinder used a parachute to slow down and drift toward the surface of the Red Planet. Before landing, Pathfinder inflated huge airbags around itself. The spacecraft released its parachute and dropped to the ground, bouncing on its airbags about 15 times. After Pathfinder came to a stop, the airbags deflated. Before the Mars Pathfinder, spacecraft had to use lots of fuel to slow down for a safe landing on another planet. Pathfinder’s airbags allowed engineers to use and store less fuel for the landing. This made the mission less expensive. After seeing the successful Pathfinder landing, future missions used this airbag technique, too!
Pathfinder had two parts: a lander that stayed in one place, and a wheeled rover that could move around. The Pathfinder lander had special instruments to study Martian weather. These instruments measured air temperature, pressure and winds. The measurements helped us better understand the climate of Mars.
Pathfinder helped us learn how to better design missions to Mars. It gave us valuable new information on the Martian climate and surface. Together, these things helped lay the groundwork for future missions to Mars.
The lander also had a camera for taking images of the Martian landscape. The lander sent back more than 16,000 pictures of Mars. Its last signal was sent to Earth on Sept. 27, 1997. Pathfinder also carried the very first rover to Mars. This remotely-controlled rover was about the size of a microwave oven and was called Sojourner. It was named to honor Sojourner Truth, who fought for AfricanThe Mars Pathfinder lander took this photo of its small rover, American and women's rights. Two days after Pathfinder called Sojourner. Here, Sojourner is investigating a rock on Mars. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech. landed, Sojourner rolled onto the surface of Mars.
Meet the Mars Rovers Mars is a fascinating planet. It’s icy cold and covered in reddish dust and dirt. Like Earth, it has volcanoes, gullies, and flat plains. Scientists can also see channels that look like they were carved by rivers and streams a long time ago. Over the years, NASA has sent four robotic vehicles, or rovers, to learn more about Mars. And NASA scientists are planning to send one more in just a few years!
Why are rovers so important? Since the 1970s, scientists have been sending spacecraft to Mars. Several different types of spacecraft have been sent to the Red Planet over the years, and they all have different specialties. One type, called orbiters, orbit Mars, taking pictures as they zoom around the planet. Other spacecraft, called landers, provide photos and information from their landing spots on the surface of Mars. In 1997, NASA scientists did something pretty amazing. For the first time, they used a small wheeled robot to study the surface of Mars. This robotic explorer, called a rover, was named Sojourner. Sojourner was only about the size of a microwave oven. However, she went on to share lots of important new information with scientists.
Rovers have wheels and specialize in moving around. They land on the surface of Mars and drive around to different spots. Rovers help scientists in their quest to understand what different parts of the planet are made of. Mars is made up of lots of different types of rocks, and each rock is made up of a mixture of chemicals. A rover can drive around to different areas, studying the different chemicals in each rock. These chemicals can tell scientists something about the environments that changed that rock over time. In addition to the Sojourner rover, NASA has sent three more rovers to Mars: Spirit and Opportunity in 2003, and Curiosity in 2011. Another Mars rover mission is projected for 2020.
traveling very far. Engineers also liked the area because it seemed like a flat, safe place for Sojourner to land. As Sojourner drove short distances, she used her camera to take pictures of the Martian landscape. She sent back more than 550 pictures of the Red Planet. The rover used instruments to study what the nearby Martian rocks and dirt were made of. Her lander also collected information about winds and other weather factors on Mars. From far away, Mars looks cold, dry, and rocky. But Sojourner's photos and information told a much different story. We learned that a long time ago, Mars used to be a warmer and wetter place. Source: https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/mars-sojourner/en/. Images: NASA SpacePlace.
The First Mars Rover: Sojourner The Mars rover Sojourner wasn’t alone on her journey to Mars in July 1997. She traveled within a spacecraft called a lander. The lander was shaped like a pyramid and was covered in airbags. The airbags helped the lander have a safe, bouncy landing. The pyramid shape helped ensure the lander and rover could be flipped right-side-up, no matter how they landed. After the lander touched down on Mars, a panel opened and Sojourner rolled out to start exploring. The rover explored an area of Mars near her landing site called Ares Vallis. Scientists were interested in this area because it looked like the site of an ancient flood. The rushing water of a flood would have pushed lots of rocks and dirt into one place. This means the rover could study lots of different types of rocks without

Meet the Mars Rovers (cont.) The Mars Rovers: Spirit and Opportunity After the success of the Sojourner rover, NASA wanted to send more rovers to learn about Mars. So, in 2003, they sent two rovers to the Red Planet. The rovers were named Spirit and Opportunity. Together, they were part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission. Spirit and Opportunity were made as twins. They both carried all of the same scientific instruments. And each was about the size of a golf cart.
The Mars Rovers: Curiosity On Earth, where there is water, there are living things. We know that Mars had water a long time ago. But did it also have other conditions life needs? To find out, NASA sent the Curiosity rover to Mars. Curiosity is the largest robot to ever land on another planet. She is about the size of a small SUV. Because Curiosity is so big, she also has bigger wheels (20 inches in diameter) than the previous rovers. This helps her to roll over rocks and sand without getting stuck. However, even on a long driving day, she still only travels about 660 feet.
Spirit landed in a region called Gusev Crater. Scientists wanted to explore the crater because they thought it could have held water long ago. From pictures taken by satellites, scientists thought it looked like several large rivers flowed into Gusev Crater. Opportunity landed on the other side of Mars in an area called Meridiani Planum. This region was nice because it was a flat, safe spot for the rover to land. Also, studies with a satellite around Mars showed that it might contain a mineral called grey hematite. On Earth, grey hematite often in the presence of water. Opportunity found grey hematite in spherelike grains in Meridiani Planum. Scientists called these grains “blueberries.” On Earth, hematite forms near water. On her journey, Spirit took many photos of Mars with her camera. They were the first color photos taken by a rover on another planet. The Mars rover Opportunity found these grey hematite spheres on Mars. Scientists call these grains "blueberries." Spirit also found several signs of past water, and evidence of geothermal, or volcanic activity. She explored sites that may have been hot springs millions of years ago. Not to be outdone by her twin, Opportunity also took many color photos of the Martian landscape. She found evidence of water, too. Opportunity studied layers of minerals in the rock near her landing site. The evidence she collected suggested that her landing site was on the shoreline of a salty sea. The rocks that Spirit and Opportunity studied showed scientists that a long time ago, water on Mars may have looked a lot like water on Earth. Mars once had lakes and rivers on the surface. Like Earth, it also had water below the ground, as well as water vapor in the atmosphere. Source: https://spaceplace. nasa.gov/mars-spirit-opportunity/en/ Images: NASA Space Place.
Curiosity landed in Gale Crater on August 5, 2012. This crater is special because it has a tall mountain in the middle. The mountain has many layers of rock. Each layer is made of different minerals from different time periods. These minerals could tell scientists about the history of water on Mars. The rover uses many scientific instruments to study the rocks in Gale Crater. Curiosity used her drill to make a hole in a rock that once was mud at the bottom of a lake. One of her other instruments studied the powder drilled from the rock. This information helped scientists learn that the Gale crater had ingredients that ancient life would have The Curiosity rover took needed to survive.

Scientists sent Curiosity to Mars to measure lots of other things, too— including radiation. Radiation is a type of energy that can come from the sun. It travels in highenergy waves that can be harmful to living things. Curiosity found that Mars has high, dangerous levels of radiation. NASA will use Curiosity’s radiation data to design missions to be safer for human explorers. Curiosity brought 17 cameras with her to the Red Planet—more than A self-portrait of Curiosity on a Martian sand dune. At this site, she used any other rover. She uses instruments to scoop up and study sand samples. Credit: NASA/JPLCaltech/MSSS some of her cameras to take photos of her journey. Cameras also act as Curiosity’s eyes, helping her to spot and stay away from danger. One of Curiosity’s cameras—at the end of her 7 foot long robotic arm— even acts like a sort of “selfie stick.” She can hold the camera two meters away and take a selfie to send back to Earth! Mars 2020
The Mars 2020 mission will send a rover very similar to Curiosity to explore the rocks, dirt, and air on Mars. Like Curiosity, the Mars 2020 rover is the size of a small SUV. Learn more about the Mars 2020 mission at https:// spaceplace.nasa.gov/mars-2020/en/

(Available on DVD: July 25, 2017)
In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette (voiced by Demi Lovato) and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does.
