Surfing Competitions & Events in Wrightsville Beach, NC Catch the Surfing Fun in August 2019!
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC – Three headline surf events return to Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina in a span of ten days in August. First, on Aug. 16-18th, one of the largest surf contests on the East Coast returns for its 14th year: the annual O’Neill/Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest. The Surf Fest attracts 200 professional and amateur surfers from Florida to Rhode Island, with some of the pros flying in from California, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Hawaii. “You have so many good athletes that show up, and a different set of circumstances every year as far as waves and the conditions,” said Brad Beach, Event Manager. “I don’t think we’ve had a repeat pro champion in our 13 years.” O’Neill/Sweetwater also presents Saturday’s Music and Art Fest in the park, combining local musicians, arts, crafts, and family activities. Next up on Aug. 19th is Surfers Healing, an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of those with autism by exposing them to the experience of surfing. Surfers Healing is celebrating twenty-two years of providing camps at no cost to children in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and the United States.

Izzy Paskowitz, a professional surfer and father of Isaiah, a child with autism, is the founder of Surfers Healing. When Isaiah was five, Izzy discovered the power of surf therapy for his child, inspiring him to start a camp for children with autism. “I wanted to do something to give back,” said Paskowitz, in an interview on Boston public radio, WBUR. “I am so grateful for the gift that he’s [Isaiah] given me. I have the most unique life, and I get to share that with thousands of people. I love my autism family.” (Continued on page 7.)

Wrightsville Beach August Surf Contests & Events (cont. from page 6 ) Wrapping up the trio of surf events on August 23-25th is the 7th annual Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic, open to lady surfers of all ages. Competitors include teenie-wahines, amateurs, and professionals. “There are only a handful of surf competitions on the East Coast for ladies,” said Jo Pickett, Event Organizer. “The Wahine Classic at Wrightsville Beach is recognized as one of the major events. The Classic offers a fun weekend at the beach for the family, and the athletes enjoy the surfing competition and building camaraderie.” Pickett expects 90 to 100 surfers, with most coming from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Florida. “Young girls are competing in increasing numbers,” said Pickett. “Surfing is now in the 2020 Olympics in Japan, with each country represented by female and male surfers.” "The idea is to bring all girls to the playing field," Pickett says. "The developing surfers learn from the most accomplished."

The Wahini Classic founders note that an aall-female contest like this is a real platform tto dive into surfing. There is a competitive eedge to it, but it's a fun community event.
A crowd favorite is the teeny wahine division. "My daughter Airlie calls the teeny wahines 'the dads and daughters' because ... you see the dads as happy as the girls bonding and assisting so their little girls can ride waves," Pickett says. Pickett's philosophy of instruction is rooted in mentoring. For decades she has mentored many female surfers including two daughters, Airlie Pickett and Lelaini Pickett.
With all of this surfing fun happening in Wrightsville Beach this August, it's a perfect W ttime to head to the beach and catch a wave!

Instructions Add watermelon, ½ cup of blueberries, ½ cup of raspberries, and (optional) honey to a blender. Blend until smooth. FUN & GAMES
Jump Roping
Games for exercise and fun!
Have you ever watched the Bouncing Bulldogs in action? Based in Chapel Hill-Durham, NC, the Bouncing Bulldogs have performed around the U.S. and in countries around the world. The Bouncing Bulldogs' innovative jumping style includes fancy footwork, flips, and other acrobatic skills with ropes of various lengths. The team has won more than 200 national championship awards in both single and double dutch events, and has 18 world champions. Learn more about the Bouncing Bulldogs at www. bouncingbulldogs.org. It's a lot of fun to watch the amazing jump ropers leap through the air! The Bouncing Bulldogs inspire us to grab a jump rope and just start jumping for fun and exercise. You can also have fun jump roping with your friends or your family playing jump roping games. Here are some jump roping game ideas you can try at home or on the playground.
Freeze Jump Rope A great way to jump and have fun with friends is to play a game called “Freeze Jump Rope. For this game, you need some friends, upbeat music and jump ropes. To begin, have everyone who is playing spread out with their jump ropes so they have enough space to jump. One person in the game will need to be the person controlling the music. When everyone is ready, the music controller will play the music and everyone will start to jump. The jumpers can do any tricks or steps as they would like, as long as they keep jumping with their rope. When the music controller is ready, they will stop the music and immediately, the jumpers must freeze. The music controller must watch carefully to see who is the last to freeze. When the music controller picks the last person who froze, that person will now help the music controller with their job. Continue this until there is only one person left and they will be declared the winner! Have fun!
JUMP! This fun jump rope game is similar to the popular basketball game HORSE. JUMP is a fun way to work on different skills and can be played with any number of people. One person starts out and does any skill they want, such as, turning in a circle, squatting down, jumping on one foot, side swings, or any other jump roping skills that person may know. Every other person playing the game attempts to do the skill that the first person did, and whoever does not complete the skill receives a J. The next person in the group does a different skill, and once again everybody attempts to do it, and again whoever does not complete the skill receives a J, if a person already had a J then they continue spelling out JUMP. The players continue going through the group doing different tricks, and spelling out JUMP. The last person to not have JUMP is the winner! Remember to have fun and try to learn new skills from your friends!
Pirate Ship ARRRGGG MATEY, jump into the fun and play Pirate ship with all your friends! It's important to be active, and that is easier to do when you are playing fun games. Pirate ship is a simple jump rope game consisting of few rules. The first thing you need is a really long rope, so all players can fit comfortably inside. Pick two people to become the turners. Each turner will stand on one side of the long rope while the rest of the players line up alongside the rope. Turners will call, "ready, set, go!" and the players will begin jumping up and down at the same time. They will continue to jump until the rope catches someone's foot. When this happens, the player who missed will "jump ship" by exiting the long rope and call out some kind of pirate lingo. For example, "arrrg" or "ahoy." The game will continue until there is only one pirate left, that player becomes the captain. Feel free to add obstacles for the players by asking them to do tricks while in the rope, jumping on one foot, spinning in a circle, touching the ground, to make it more interesting.

A Skywatcher's Guide to the Moon This summer marks 50 years since U.S. Apollo 11 astronauts "Buzz" Aldrin, Neill Armstrong and Michael Collins made their daring journey to the moon. Use this Moon Map to identify features on the Moon. Learn what the light and dark areas are, and what created the craters.
Compare the Moon Map below as you look at the full Moon this month (August 15th). Find out where the Apollo 11 astronauts landed (near the edge of the Moon's "Sea of Tranquility"), where the other Apollo missions (12, 14, 15, 16, and 17) landed, and discover what actually fills the moon's famous "seas."
Also watch for the Perseid meteor showers in the night sky beginning around August 9th, peaking on August 11th, 12th and 13th! The light from the full Moon may make the Perseids harder to see, so plan to watch for the Perseid meteors early this year, the weekend of August 9 to August 11th.

Ahoy, Matey! Call 811 Before You Dig!
WEBSITE PICKS
August 11 is National 811 Day
August 11 is National 811 Day, and it's a great time to remind everyone that they must call 811 before digging in the ground. A pirate might safely dig for buried treasure on an island surrounded by the ocean, where there are not any underground utility lines, like gas/oil, water, telecommunications/cable/alarm lines, electric power lines, sewer and drain lines. But unlike a pirate digging for treasure on an island at sea, anyone who wants to dig in the ground in the U.S. must first pick up the phone and call 811 (the same number works in all of the United States) to make sure that their digging or excavation project will not hit any utility lines.
To stay safe and to make sure you don't damage any utility lines, before digging in the ground first take these steps:
CALL 811before digging WAIT the required amount of time (three business days in North Carolina) so that the locators can come out and mark the locations of the underground utilities.
Watch the NC 811 Pirate Video online! www.nc811.org/kids.html
RESPECT the marks, and
DIG with care North Carolina 811 (NC811.org) has videos on its website to teach children (and grown-ups) about NC811, and the importance of calling 811 before digging. Parents can find these short, fun educational videos for kids including a fun Pirate Video (images shown on this page) at http://www.nc811. org/kids.html.

Call 811 Before You Dig Stay Safe & Protect Underground Utilities from Damage Since 1978, North Carolina 811 provides North Carolina residents a fast and easy communications link with their local utility providers. Call 811 to give NC 811 information about the place where you plan to dig/excavate (for example, before digging to plant a tree, install a mail box, install a fence, or any project that requires digging.) NC 811 transmits the information to the utilities and then they send out locators to mark the underground lines for FREE. So remember, call 811 or 1-800-632-4949 three working days before you plan to dig.
