Happy November!
Thanksgiving is a time for gathering together with family and friends and giving thanks for every blessing. One favorite Thanksgiving tradition is the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Read about the 91st annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (pages 10 & 11), and take a look at some of the newest giant balloons to join in the parade fun! The parade will be broadcast live on television (NBC) and online from 9am to 12pm on Thanksgiving Day. On page 7 we'll learn about the folk art of Grandma Moses, whose paintings celebrate families, communities, nature, and the changing seasons in beautiful old-fashioned farm settings. Grandma Moses' art did not become discovered until she was 78 years old! Now she is known around the world as one of the most famous folk artists. Ask a parent to get out some paper and pens, crayons or paints, and draw your own picture of your family's Thanksgiving gathering! This month we'll also learn with NASA's Space Place about some of the spooky images captured in space: see if you can you spot a Jack O'Lantern, a spider and more (page 13). November is a time for lots of fun things to do in the North Carolina Triangle! The Emerson Waldorf School Annual Children's Faire & Artisan Marketplace takes place on Saturday, November 18th (10am - 3pm), with horse carriage rides, puppet shows, silk dyeing, music, games, crafts and more for children of all ages. Read more about it below and on page 5. Join in the fun at Santa's Arrival Parade at Northgate Mall on Saturday, November 18, where you can make your own ornament, and meet Santa! Northgate's fun family-friendly events in November and December include Breakfast with Santa, Pet Photos with Santa, Elf on The Shelf and other holiday happenings (See page 16 / back cover and visit northgatemall.com). Looking ahead to December, get your tickets now for Triangle Youth Ballet's The Nutcracker performances (page 4). Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

ALL ABOUT ART Anna Mary Robertson Moses was a
painter, artist, farmer, wife and mother who became known as Grandma Moses after she became famous for her paintings when she was 80 years old.
The Art of Grandma Moses "It's up to us to make the best out of what life offers."- Anna Mary "Grandma" Moses
After she began painting in her 70s, her paintings were "discovered" when she was 78 years old. Grandma Moses went on to became one of the most famous folk artists of the twentieth century! Her brightly colored paintings of farm life and rural communities capture the colors of the changing seasons, the spirit of the holidays, and the fun and excitement of rural community traditions. Anna Mary Robertson was born on her family's farm in Greenwich, New York on September 7, 1860. She was the third oldest of ten children. She had a happy childhood growing up on the family farm, playing outside in nature, helping with some of the farm work, and helping out with her younger siblings. As a child, Anna showed great interest in art, and was delighted when her father would bring her drawing paper and art materials.
Anna Mary Robertson Moses as a young child (left), and after she had become known as "Grandma Moses" above.
Anna left home when she was 12 years old to work as a hired girl doing housekeeping for a nearby farm, and she continued to work on various local farms for the next 15 years, until she met her future husband. She married Thomas Moses when she was 27, and they moved to a rented farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. They raised their family of five children on rented farms in Virginia for the next ten years, until they saved enough money to buy their own farm in Eagle Bridge, New York, near Anna's childhood home.
After her husband died in 1927, Anna continued to operate the farm with the help of some of her grown-up children. With her children grown, she was able to devote more time to her embroidery, The Year with Grandma Moses book by W. Nikola Lisa creating needlework pictures, but arthritis made “I paint from the top down. First the sky, then the mountains, her give up the embroidery she loved doing. Her then the hills, then the trees, then the houses, then the cattle, sister gave her the idea to try painting when Anna and then the people.” - Anna Mary "Grandma" Moses was in her 70s. A b o u t G ra n d m a M os e s ' Pa i n t i n g s · Anna Mary "Grandma" Moses painted Anna began to paint the scenes of daily life on the from her childhood memories. farm in rural communities. When she was 78 years old, some of Anna's paintings were displayed in a local drugstore window, where a visiting art collector from New York City saw them and purchased all of her paintings on display. Her art work was later shown in gallery exhibits in New York City, and her paintings eventually became a great hit across the country and in Europe. At more than 80 years old Anna Robertson "Grandma Moses" had became one of the world's best-known folk artists. She painted over 1,000 paintings, including twenty-five paintings that she painted after her 100th birthday. Grandma Moses lived to be 101 years old, and she remains a great inspiration. As Anna wrote in her autobiography My Life's Story, "It's up to us to make the best out of what life offers." She showed everyone through her example that great things are possible, at any age, when you are willing to try something new, and you put in the effort and the work.

NASA Images: Spooky in Space - By Linda Hermans-Killam,, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Have you ever seen a cloud that looks sort of like a rabbit? Or maybe a rock formation that looks a bit like an elephant? Although you know that a cloud isn’t really a giant rabbit in the sky, it’s still fun to look for patterns in images from nature. Can you spot some familiar spooky sites in the space images below?
Credit: NASA/GSFC/SDO
This might look like the grinning face of a jack-o’-lantern, but it’s actually a picture of our Sun! In this image, taken by NASA’s Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
Can you see the profile of a witch in the image above? This image, from NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, shows the Witch Head nebula. The nebula is made up of clouds of dust heated by starlight. These dust clouds are where new stars are born. Here, the dust clouds happen to be in the shape of an open mouth, long nose and pointy chin.
Solar Dynamics Observatory, the glowing eyes, nose and mouth are some of the Sun’s active regions. These regions give off lots of light and energy. This causes them to appear brighter against the rest of the Sun. Active regions are constantly changing locations on the Sun. On the day this image was captured, they just happened to look like a face!
The Black Widow Nebula looks like a giant spider in space.
This is a Hubble Space Telescope image of Jupiter.
It is a huge cloud of gas and dust containing massive young stars. Radiation and winds from these stars push the dust and gas around, creating a spiderlike shape.
Do you notice something that looks like a big eye peeking back at you? That’s actually the shadow of Jupiter's moon Ganymede as it passed in front of the planet’s Great Red Spot.
Jupiter's Great Red Spot is a gigantic, oval shaped storm that is larger than Earth and is shrinking. It has been on Jupiter for several hundred years, and its winds can swirl up to 400 miles per hour!
This image is from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Univ. of Wisc.

Leafy Fun Fact! As the days grow shorter each fall, it causes the breakdown of the green pigment -- chlorophyll -- in the leaves of deciduous trees. This breakdown ends photosynthesis for the season and allows the other pigments hidden under the stronger green to show through, giving us some amazing fall colors.
Deciduous Forest Animal!
Eastern Gray Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis
Eastern gray squirrels are found in hardwood and mixed forests with trees that produce nuts. They are one of the few mammals that are truly diurnal -- active during the day. They are also active year-round, surviving on buried nuts and cones. This habit of burying nuts has the unintended effect of making them tree planters as well!
