FROM THE GROUND, UP Multifamily Housing in Paris, FR
Totalization Studio: Dynamic Balance • Rice University • 5,500 sf My house-making process began with an analysis of the assumptions of “houseness” from the perspective of an owner, an architect, and a critic. Terms such as “comfort, commodity, and delight” were faced with the banal realities of scale, orientation, and boundary, as well as the essential qualities of narrative, cadence, and whimsy. It is in fact these final three terms, and their architectural translations, that have a driving presence in this project: a site comprised of steps that render the slope legible, and four

building forms that have a rhythm and common structural logic, but with ample room for playfulness and mutation. When combined with critical elements of the urban city—public space, views, and access—and the specific characteristics of Paris—the poché of compacted earth and the impenetrable city wall—a refreshed understanding of life and city emerges. The site for the home is both horizontal and vertical, consisting of the street, the slope, and even the walls of the neighboring buildings.

Both building and ground cuts are rendered as white poché, adding visual weight to the notion of the thick, dense parisian street block.

Heating
Passive ventilation is achieved through sliding sections of the curtain wall system at living rooms and bedrooms.
Water & Sewage pipes fit within service zones adjacent to stairs and are seperated into two individual systems.
The houses are warmed by a radiant floor heating system supplied by piping and HWH units located in servize zones.

NEW FACE, NEW PLACE Cohen Wing Adaptation and Enhancements for Boston Symphony Hall
Boston, MA • Epstein Joslin Architects • 50,000 sf Taken from a series of plan and digital model studies, the following views convey the atmosphere that Epstein Joslin Architects imagined for the enhancement of the patron experience within Symphony Hall and the Cohen Wing. Working in SketchUp, I developed an exterior model of the complete ensemble, and collaborated with Alan Joslin and Deborah Epstein to refine digital models and conceptual plans for the views depicted on the opposite page. Central to our thinking was a

contemporary entrance and event space meant to capture the vitality and spatial variety that BSO wished to bring to intermission receptions, Pops performances, and ancillary events. The “event atrium” would be the new feature space linking activity in the Cohen Wing to Symphony Hall. Characterized by warm finishes, including a faceted wood ceiling, Bocci lighting, and integral bar and ceremonial stair, the event atrium could serve as a lounge, dining, or concert venue.

A GARDEN PAVILION
Welcome Center at The Breakers for The Preservation Society of Newport County
Newport, RI • Epstein Joslin Architects • 5,000 sf Epstein Joslin Archiects had taken the Welcome Center through design development when I joined the office and project in 2014. I was responsible for managing and completing the construction documents, and worked with a senior technical architect to refine details and coordinate structural and MEP systems. I also independently detailed schematic building elements, including exhibition cabinets designed in collaboration with PSNC and EXP Design of Rhode Island. The exhibition

cabinets are arrayed within the windows of the Ticketing and Exhibition Room and contain various modules provided by EXP Design. The “Display Module,” depicted on the opposite page, houses a back-lit image display, interactive touch-screen, and artifact display box containing information on the many house museums preserved and managed by PSNC, which visitors can explore while waiting to purchase tickets. Low shrubs and evergreens surround the Ticketing Room and Cafe.

TERRACOTTA TRELLIS

Epstein Joslin Architects
The evolution of the trellis concept is the result of collaboration between me, the senior designer, and the design principal. However, I worked independently to build the model, refine the massing and patterns, coordinate the structure with adjacent construction, develop the light fixtures, and draw the details through design development. After researching terracotta manufacturers, collaborating with detailers from NBK helped me to understand the relationship between the baguette frame and structure.

More importantly, I developed a real appreciation for engaging fabricators early in the design process in order to achieve elegant, constructible, and timely results. The terracotta trellis structure plays a special role in the facility’s composition, synthesizing the volumes of The Conrad to present a unified front to the Village of La Jolla. The trellis design conforms with the scale of buildings along Fay Ave, and consists of a steel structure supporting aluminum frames with terra-cotta “baguettes.”

STRUCTURAL ORCHARD Music Center at Indian Hill
Groton, MA • Epstein Joslin Architects • 125,000 sf I worked on the Music Center at Indian Hill briefly in a supporting role during production of the Foundation Package, issued in January 2017. While significant portions of the Concert Hall and Recital hall were developed and actively in design in Rhino, I worked with the project manager in Revit to clarify wall assemblies and exterior elements for “The Orchard,” which consisted of class rooms, practice rooms, and other supporting spaces beneath a system of tree columns. Based on a typical detail
from the geotechnical engineer, and coordinating directly with the structural consultant and technical architect, I developed over thirty wall sections and detail exterior elevations similar to the drawings depicted below and on the opposite page. Some of these drawings were used internally and purely for coordination while others, such as the Concert Hall East Wall Section, were used to locate foundation elements, show subgrade conditions, and call out architectural assemblies and materials.
