Welcome to the 2016 Chinese Visual Festival! It’s great to be back for our sixth year - we’ve continued to grow and grow, and it’s been incredibly gratifying to see audiences responding so well to our efforts in bringing independent Chinese language cinema to London and now the rest of the UK. Londoners in particular are really spoiled for choice when it comes to film and art, though I think it’s safe to say that we’ve managed to find our spot in the cultural calendar, and that our mix of independent documentaries, fiction, shorts, and experimental cinema offers something a little different. As well as all the fantastic premieres and award-winning films we’re giving our audience the rare chance to catch on the big screen, I’m particularly pleased to see a female focus in our two Chinese guests Cao Fei and Yang Lina. We’re very privileged to be again working with the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK on Vision Taiwan, and it’s been great to see the series getting more and more popular each year - Thanatos, Drunk is a real personal favourite, and being able to bring Huang Shang-ho and Ado Kaliting Pacidal to London shows just how the festival has grown. With audiences becoming increasingly curious about the cultures and stories of the Chinese speaking world, our films this year deal with some challenging and intriguing topics, and we’re offering plenty that educates as well as entertains. Perhaps even more importantly, we continue to try and give a platform to filmmakers who have real stories to tell, indeed stories which need to be told, and whose works are made with real creativity and passion, and often with great personal cost and sacrifice. I think one of the reasons the festival has proved so successful is the fact that it’s not only about films and art, but cultural exchange and debate, and this year we’re again offering plenty of chances for festival goers to engage with the directors and artists, with panel sessions, Q&As and forums. Come along, have your say, and get involved... This year Vision Taiwan is entering its third year, and the films submitted to be featured are both greater in number, and contain more wide-ranging and boundarypushing content. This year’s line-up includes the feature films: Thanatos, Drunk, Tomorrow Comes Today, Wawa No Cidal, and Zinnia Flower. Through the annual hosting of Vision Taiwan at the Chinese Visual Festival, we hope to be able to attract even more exciting Taiwanese films for British audiences to enjoy. In addition to our screenings, this year we are delighted to welcome actor, Shangho Huang, from Thantos, Drunk and actress, Ado Kaliting, from Wawa No Cidal to join the festivities. What’s the situation in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China? In this panel with Ado Kaliting Pacidal, Amis musician, TV host and star of Panay (Wawa no Cidal), and Tibetan Girl director Jin Huaqing and his star Gongqiu Zhuoma, we examine the politics of ethnicity in filmmaking practices in the Sinosphere. Are ethnic minority audiences and critics concerned about how they are depicted in the mainstream and who does it? Are there opportunities for ethnic minority filmmakers in the industry? She has also turned her talents to acting, making her big screen debut in Lekal Sumi and Cheng Yu-chieh’s Panay, which captures an authentic view of the lives and predicaments of Taiwan’s indigenous communities when it comes to land rights. Her performance was widely praised, winning her a nomination for Best New Performer at the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei.
