BACKGROUND

NID

National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad The National Institute of Design started operations in 1961 based on the recommendations made in the India Report made by Charles & Ray Eames. NID follows the philosophy of the Bauhaus design movement which is learning by doing. This unique curriculum and revolutionary educational philosophy remain part of NID to the present day. NID has taken five decades of pioneering hard work by the academic community at the institute to develop a system of education which lays more emphasis on learning than on mere

instruction. Over a span of the last 50 years, the institution has made it a point to lay emphasis on learning and to pursue innovation led designs through the development of the mind and skills of designers. The recently passed NID Act (2014) will open up new opportunities for research and exploration for both students and faculty from NID and an inspiration for NID to renew its pledge for promoting multidisciplinary learning of design.

BACKGROUND

BUDWEISER

Budweiser & AB InBev Budweiser is a brand of beer owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), a global beverages and brewing company headquartered in Leuven, Belgium. AB InBev is the world's largest brewer measured by revenue and has a 25 percent global market share. AB InBev was formed through successive mergers of three international brewing groups: Interbrew from Belgium, AmBev from Brazil, and Anheuser-Busch from the United States. It has 16 brands that individually generate more than US$ 1 billion annually in revenue, out of a portfolio of more than 200 brands. This portfolio includes global brands such as Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois, and international brands Beck's, Hoegaarden and Leffe.

Budweiser is an American pale lager which was originally produced by Anheuser-Busch in 1876. Today, Budweiser is the largest selling beer brand in the United States with more than 50 percent of the market share and is available in more than 80 countries. Before AB's merger with InBev, Budweiser was selling only in small quantities and was the only global beer brand that was not a part of the mainstream market. After the formation of AB InBev, a new push was made in the Indian market, one of the key growth markets for the brewing industry. The Budweiser brand is at the forefront of this push, from which this project arises.

DESIGN BRIEF BACKGROUND

DESIGN BRIEF

Budweiser is one of the globally leading producers of beer. Budweiser is a brand that not only produces beer but they project a lifestyle. Budweiser has only recently entered the Indian market and they are yet to establish a foothold in the Indian market. Budweiser now wants to communicate its brand values and help connect with the Indian consumer. Budweiser’s retail assets for the Indian market have so far been designed by their in-house team. To maximize the impact and produce a more premium design, they have partnered with Enso Design, a design studio based in New Delhi. The retail assets are intended to be used throughout all their affiliated stores and bars across the nation. SCOPE OF WORK •

Design development of four formats of in-shop display assets for their products: 1. Wall displays 2. Island displays 3. Behind the bar-displays • Design Detailing • Prototyping • Adaptation/Production DELIVERABLES • • •

VISUAL PRINCIPLES Any creative expression of Budweiser is informed by Budweiser's 3 visual principles. They are consistent with and inspired by Budweiser's Brand Ideal, and shade in the detail of Bold Spirit and Crafted Soul. These principles illustrate how the Visual essence is brought to life in a tangible way through design.

2.2

CONCEPTUALIZATION

BUDWEISER : THE BRAND

#1 CRISP, CLEAN, BOLD & ICONIC

#2 STRONG, POLISHED & DETAILED

#3 REAL, SPONTANEOUS & EPIC

Budweiser visually expresses itself with a bold, spirited energy that combines impact with charm. Budweiser looks clean and confident. Bold is about celebrating the freedoms of life and all of its possibilities.

Craftsmanship is part of Budweiser's tradition but it also keeps pace with contemporary times. The hand & heart of the makers is seen in Budweiser's work.

A Bold Spirit and Crafted Soul are undeniable human traits. It’s the balance between the freedom that the brand represents and a crafted touch that exemplifies the Budweiser story.

The use of color, graphics and form is full blooded, single minded and representative of the freedom that is Budweiser. They act as a flag for Budweiser's spirit, but also pays a second glance with detail and nuance. This along with a use of white space and ‘stand back’ simplicity evokes a sense of liberty and visual ‘freedom’.

The substance of Budweiser's beer and the scale of its popularity is reflected through a robust can-do quality to materials and styling – Budweiser is premium not pretentious, and the styling is solid and has ‘heft’.

Budweiser is a truly epic American brand with a global reach. Though proudly macro, Budweiser honors the human touch and craft behind our product and generations of success. This mind-set should ensure expressions that have substance as well as style, conveying their soul as well as their scale.

CONCEPTUALIZATION

CONCEPT

CONCEPT NOTE The design of the displays follows Budweiser’s visual branding philosophy of “Bold Spirit & Crafted Soul”. The displays are a physical manifestation of this philosophy and embodies all the values that Budweiser stands for. The Budweiser beer on display is encapsulated by two layers: the outer one representing the Bold Spirit and the interior layer representing the crafted soul. Through this arrangement, the displays can sport a strong and

energetic exterior which will make a powerful first impression and one that is immediately recognizable. This represents Budweiser's Bold Spirit. Beneath this exterior is a more refined interior space within which the Budweiser beer is placed. This is a symbol of the sophisticated side of Budweiser and is a reminder of Budweiser's rich heritage that forms the background for all their success.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

FORMATS

The displays are to be in four different formats: wall displays, island displays, chiller-top displays and behind-the-bar displays. Each format serves unique applications in the retail scenario and are industry standard formats.

SITE RECONNAISSANCE

2

SITE RECONNAISSANCE The client already had a list of shops in which the displays would be installed, although the kind of display that would be installed was not specified yet. These shops were all located in the Delhi-NCR area, most of them being in Gurgaon.

1 24

Chingkhomba Chingtham

Degree Project Documentation

2015

The shops visited ranged from the more basic ones (locally known "theka") to the more premium ones. The displays are to be different for these different scenarios. For example, image 2 is the generic "theka", where there is no scope for the customer to get physically close to the displays. Image 2 shows a slightly higher end shop where the customers can experience the products and the displays themselves more up-close.

3.2

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

SITE RECONNAISSANCE

3

4

Image 3 shows a shop which is still the standard "theka" but allows the customers some freedom to approach the displays. But it is still a stark contrast in comparison to premium shops (images 4 & 5) where the customers are free to roam around the shop, giving opportunities for attracting the customers to the Budweiser brand.

5

The displays should satisfy the unique requirements of the sites in which they are installed. Chingkhomba Chingtham

Degree Project Documentation

3.2

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

SITE RECONNAISSANCE

1

In a majority of the shops visits, the displays had a tendency to become a fuzzy background visual noise where one brand is indistinguishable from the other (image 1 & image 5 on the previous page). This textural quality of the displays was confusing and made it difficult to get to specific brands.

This scenario provides an opportunity to really stand out from the visual noise. Also, the shops had plenty of dead space that could be used more effectively (images 2&3). The displays should also incorporate means to make the most of such sites.

LEGACY ASSETS

LEGACY ASSETS The client had provided the images of executions of the past few years of operation. These legacy assets were designed by their in-house team. A bold new step needed to be taken to improve the public perception of the brand and to really express the true values of the brand. The existing executions lacked clarity of form and cohesiveness, resorting to gimmicky use of the bottles and unimpressive branding graphics, lighting and lacking in good finishing and detailing.

FORM DEVELOPMENT

FORM DEVELOPMENT With the concept in place, what was needed was to arrive at a suitable form language which would help express the bolder side of the Budweiser philosophy while at the same time allow for later refinement to receive the finer details that would showcase the finer aspects of the Budweiser philosophy.

32

Chingkhomba Chingtham

Degree Project Documentation

2015

These form exploration were inspired by the Budweiser Bowtie shape, a strong and bold form in its own right. The aim was to arrive at an expressive and aesthetically pleasing form that could accommodate the basic requirements of a retail display while still leaving open ends for refinement at a later stage.

Explorations were done on all formats, keeping in mind that the form language of one would have to be adapted for all the four different formats. FORM REFINEMENT A few of the selected form explorations were taken forward by adding details about the materials and finishes and the overall look was decided. These were still in the form of sketches, but enough to give a clear understanding. These sketches formed the basis for the first client meeting in which these concepts were revealed.

Each of these displays were in accordance with the concept that was laid out before. One can clearly appreciate the clarity of form and the boldness of the exterior, while the softness of the interior adds a premium feel, all in accordance with the design concept. Concept Note

The design of the displays follows Budweiser’s visual branding philosophy of “Bold Spirit & Crafted Soul”. The displays are a physical manifestation of this philosophy. The Budweiser beer on display is encapsulated by two layers, representing the Bold Spirit & Crafted Soul.

OVERVIEW

FORMATS

The display assets are in the form of four different formats, each with its unique uses and requirements. The different formats are listed below.

82

Wall Display

Island Display

The wall displays are placed against a wall and is accessible only from the front. The front is the only usable side since it will be placed sideby-side with other shelves.

UNIT 1

Wall Display Unit 1 This design is roughly based on the bow-tie, with the neon outline resembling half of the bow-tie shape. The back-lit AB seal forms the background and is enveloped by beechwood on the inside. The slightly angled front face gives a sense of dynamism and adds energy to the display.
