Marathi literature is the oldest of the Indo-Aryan literatures. Among modern dramatists, S.K. Kolhatkar and R.G. Gadkari were notable. Madhali Sthiti (1885; “Middle State”) by Hari Narayan Apte initiated the tradition of the Marathi novel; his message was that of social reform. Important after 1925 were N.S. Phadke, who advocated “art for art’s sake,” and Jnanpith Award winner V.S. Khandekar, who countered the former with an idealistic “art for life’s sake.” Other noteworthy writers are S.N. Pendse, Kusumagraj (pen name of V.V. Shirwadkar), G.N. Dandekar, P. L. Deshpande, Ranjit Desai, and Vinda Karandikar.

Quotes by renowned Marathi Theatre Personalities “An artist is a spokesperson of present. Every thing which is made today by the artists will become a source of history for the coming generation." - Jabbar Patel

"Experimental theatre is a probe…a search for new ways to express new areas of human experience. An audience for such theatre is bound to be small. Always, anywhere in the world. There is no chance of trying anything for ‘effect’ here. You do that when you want to stun, please or woo your audience. In experimental theatre, it is a pure exchange between the audience and the actors or director, with no other trappings or expectations. There is a togetherness with the sole aim of finding something new." - Mahesh Elkunchwar

“There are times when one's life appears to be a stage. People come, people go. They come in order to go and go with no intent of return. When they return, they return as one's past.A past that would make you feel that the present is false.” - Vijay Tendulkar

"The world has never before had as much drama as today. Radio, films, television and video inundate us with drama. But while these forms can engage or even enrage the audience, in none of them can the viewer’s response alter the artistic event itself. That is why theatre is signing its own death warrant when it tries to play too safe. On the other hand, that is also the reason why, although its future often seems bleak, theatre will continue to live and to provoke." - Girish Karnad

Preserving the dying art of handwritten Devanagri India is home to vivid and beautiful scripts and thus, is one of the most ideal environments to study and practice type design. We have a rich heritage of manuscripts, calligraphy, letterpress and other aspects of letter design. The hand-painted tradition that still vibrantly lives on in many parts of the country is an institution in itself. After the advent of digital fonts however one ceases to see the same burst of freshness and variety that these anonymous hands create nationwide. The art of typography is most prevalent in hand drawn type. This book is a humble attempt to preserve the beautiful handwritten marathi type, not just in the form of a coffee tabe book which can be bought as a collectible, but also as a book for young type designers to get inspired by this fading art and work around it.
