Sitting in the top 10 for the sunniest days in Canada with about 322 days of sunshine annually, Lethbridge is a destination to visit year-round. The experiences in Lethbridge are abundant with choices for the whole family, serenity on your own, or the perfect date night.
take in an exhibit. Once you’ve completed your visit at the Japanese Garden, stop at the Galt Museum & Archives and take in the history of Canada and southern Alberta. The museum reveals the city’s history including topics on our local indigenous community, coalmining, and the historic downtown.
Take an inspiring walk in the river valley where you might see a variety of wildlife roaming or identify the tracks they left behind. The Helen Schuler Nature Centre offers a variety of interactive programming for all ages that is sure to develop your appreciation of the environment but also put a big smile on your face and make kids squeal when they hold Sophie UIF HPQIFS TOBLF 5IFO IFBE TPVUI EPXO UIF USBJMT BOE ZPV XJMM mOE Fort Whoop-Up where you will walk through history and experience the story of the buffalo robe trade, the years leading up to it and the years that followed.
Exhibition Park is southern Alberta’s meeting place for events, meetings and conferences and do they know how to whoop it up. Each year they host Whoop-Up days in August featuring a midway, live music and food vendors. Throughout the summer, Exhibition Park hosts Farmers’ Markets downtown and at Exhibition Park with a plethora of local vendors and artisans selling their homemade crafts and freshly grown produce.
Henderson Pool is the most unique outdoor pool south of Calgary, featuring waterslides, a climbing wall, drop slide, one-metre diving board, Rotary Spray Park and a concession stand. Spending the entire day at Henderson Park with the pool, SLP Skate Park, walking trails, playground, Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, and Spitz Stadium, home of Bulls Baseball, will give you a true taste of how our locals spend their summer.

The High Level Bridge

When the Bridge was completed in 1909, it was described as one of the “wonders of the world.â€? The High Level Bridge was built to replace 20 wooden bridges on the rail route between Lethbridge and Fort Macleod. When the old route was less than 10 years old, the lumber used in the wooden bridges had shrunk and many of the bolts, attaching plates and other structural materials had become loose. The wooden bridges had also ILLU KHTHNLK I` Ă„YL ;OL WVVY JVUKP[PVU VM [OL ^VVKLU IYPKNLZ MVYJLK [OL YHPS^H` [V YLK\JL [YHPUZ [V OHSM [OLPY original lengths and have them travel at half speed (only 24 kilometres or 15 miles per hour). Westbound trains had to stop in Lethbridge, split into two parts, then travel at half speed along the weakened wooden bridges until they reached Fort Macleod where they were reassembled into a single train! There were also other challenges with the old rail route between Lethbridge and Fort Macleod. The route dropped down to cross two river valleys, and trains had to pull their loads back up to prairie level after each drop. There were also a considerable number of curves on the line. Curves in rail lines increase the amount of wear to the rails and to the wheels of the rolling cars. ;OL VSK YHPS SPUL IL[^LLU 3L[OIYPKNL HUK -VY[ 4HJSLVK ^HZ UV[ ]LY` WYVĂ„[HISL /V^L]LY [OL *HUHKPHU 7HJPĂ„J Railway (CPR) was building interconnecting spur lines throughout Southern Alberta to areas that had recently been opened to homesteading - such as Vulcan, Carmangay, Nobleford and Barons. One of the ‘wonders of the world’
All of these factors resulted in the desire to build the High Level Bridge in Lethbridge. Construction of the bridge took two years. It was designed and built by the Dominion Bridge Company of Walkerville, Ontario, who hired 100 men to work on the project. The quantities of materials required to build the IYPKNL ^LYL THZZP]L 0[ [VVR J\IPJ `HYKZ VM JVUJYL[L [VUZ VM Z[LLS HUK Ă„LSK YP]L[Z [V MHZ[LU the steel together. These materials made up approximately 900 carloads! The new line between Lethbridge and Fort Macleod was 8 kilometres (5 miles) shorter, and took only one hour instead of two. The overall grade of the new line was reduced from 1.2% to 0.4%, which meant using less fuel on the trip. The new line saved 4.8 full circles of curvature in the tracks, easing wear on the rails and wheels. In 2009, the High Level Bridge reached its 100th Anniversary. The High Level Bridge has been a recognizable symbol for rail transportation in Southern Alberta for just over 100 years, and it will continue to serve this industry and provide inspiration for years to come. Birds of Prey in Coaldale gives us that opportunity with specially trained Owls. Then after getting up close and personal with one of those majestic birds, get your adrenaline pumping while watching another. Flying Demonstrations are completed every 90 minutes throughout the day with beautiful falcons swooping down at 60 m.p.h. and massive eagles popping in to land on their trainer’s arm in the seating area. If you’re at all curious about birds, Birds of Prey is the place to satisfy that curiosity.

It’s important to follow the signs and paths at the park as some parts of the sandstone Hoodoo are more sensitive than others. The natural erosion of the sandstone isn’t the only thing that will captivate you though. Winter Skiing in Southwest Alberta Castle Mountain Resort is a hidden, not so little gem of a ski resort in Southern Alberta. Often called the best kept secret in the Rockies, the mountain was founded in 1966. 51 years later, Castle is lauded for its superior ski / snowboard terrain, laid-back community feel and, most of all, its sense of authenticity.
