Hanbury’s Famous Fish and Chips Hits 40!

Awell-known and award-winning Torbay fish and chip shop has recently celebrated its 40th birthday by raising £5,000 for charity.

The Babbacombe shop Hanbury’s Famous fish and chips reached the milestone on January 11.

It was on that day back in 1982 that David and Maureen Hanbury took over the ownership of the shop and have been at the heart of the Babbacombe and St Marychurch community ever since.

January 11 was also the date that fish and chips were first sold from 24 Princes Street in 1922 - making it a centenary of the nation’s favourite meal being sold from the same location.

To celebrate the shop sold Cod, Chips and Mushy Peas or Curry Sauce for only £5, and raised on the day a cheque for £5,000 for the Children’s Hospice Southwest.

Mr Hanbury and his business have raised thousands of pounds for a variety of local charities, supporting and taking part in dozens of community events, over the years

He said: “We would like to take the opportunity to thank all our customers who supported us on January 11 and also the hard-working staff that made this day’s success possible.”

Hanbury’s Takeaway now has a licence to sell alcohol. As well as offering Hanbury’s Amber Ale & Hanbury’s Craft Lager (made to their own recipe) they have a selection of Beers, Lagers and Wines to enjoy with their Takeaway fabulous fish and chips. Well-loved locally, people travel several miles for a plate of Hanbury’s fish and chips. Holidaymakers also come back year on year to relish the Hanbury’s experience.
