SPECULATIVE TYPOLOGIES AND NEW SOCIAL DYNAMIC AN EVOLVING MORPHOLOGY OF RESIDENTIAL TYPOLOGIES FALL 2014

OPTIONAL STUTIO

TORONTO

INDIVIDUAL WORK

This studio investigated the evolving morphology of residential typologies for the densification of Toronto's residential fabric. Despite half a century of planning and innovation, development has continued to neglect the existing residential fabric. Instead, the popularized high-density/high-rise infill tower accounts for 60% of residential development. While only 12% is attributed to low rise typologies such as the townhouse and its stacked offspring. With current residential housing stock reaching the century mark there is a large opportunity for a reinvention of Toronto's neighborhoods. In 2003 the city of Toronto prescribed a "smart growth" strategy using infill townhouse guidelines

to revitalize existing residential communities by replacing aging buildings and empty lots. Consequently, developers are able to satisfy the cities checklist in an elemental way, yet lacking on both an urban public scale and a typological scale. Market forces have dictated the design of these buildings based on existing residential zoning regulations, style and amenities. However, by folding other variables into the mix, such as diverse family structure, a live work program, social impact, vegetative space, and aggregation, the discussion is free to meander from the cyclical nature of market forces and politically minded zoning regulations to typological morphologies.

LARGE URBAN BUILDING MIX USED OFFICE AND PUBLIC MARKET IN LIBERTY VILLAGE WINTER 2015

TORONTO

INDIVIDUAL WORK

The Urban complex is a new typology which aims to answer to one of the basic need for Liberty Village: the need to have interaction between working and life. The site is located on the south door of this area facing the highway. It wants to be an iconic building and at the same time corresponding to the existing contents. To be an access of this area and public plaza, following the vision of old Liberty Village fabric, the office tower has been rotated down and lift

up to open the behind center zone. The bottom distributed retails and circulation cores frame an unexpected dynamic and interactive open plaza underneath. Three detached green towers are the active connections of the upper office and lower market, where people can express their creativity and regenerate from their daily work. Through an analysis of Toronto's society and the context of Liberty Village, this mix-used building aims to create a place where people can not only working and shopping but also please their need to explore.

Community is a form of association, bound around a place or social characteristics that generate a shared meaning and culture, forming the basis for, or some part of, the individual’s identity. However, isolated residential developments blocked habitants in their own territory from communicating with neighbors, which is in turn affect the stagnant communities, broadly, the transportation and programmatic burden of cities. As the result, in Toronto, we could choose where to live, how much we want to pay for living, and how large we need for life. But there is no option

for neighbors. This project explores how residential architectures could enhance the neighbourhood relationships and the sense of belongings in a physical space through a bottom-up process. I set up the social relationship hierarchy operating under the static forms, cohort groups within four or five families, close neighbours among ten to fifteen cohort groups, and large community among all the neighbours. The social relationships and dialogue between generations, cultural backgrounds, and professionals are the starting points for developing a spatial ordering structure.

ERICKSONG ARCHITECTS INC.

Tuesday, July 24, 2018 Regarding: Chelsea Wang letter of recommendation.

Chelsea Wang worked with my firm for a month in November 2016. She was a recent graduate of a professional degree in architecture, looking to enter the intern architect program in Ontario. Chelsea worked on Revit building permit documents, modelling a complex elevation in three dimensions for elevation views. She was a self motivated, disciplined and intelligent intern architect, mastering the Revit software quickly. She could also review the Ontario Building Code elements of the drawings. Chelsea Wang helped create a well executed model of a historical building in Toronto. Additionally Chelsea accompanied me to client meetings as an assistant. During her time with us, she helped translate our firm website into Chinese. Our prospective clients found the Chinese version of our landing page a help in Marketing our services to the large and growing Chinese community in Toronto. Sample : http://china.ericksong.com/ I can recommend highly Chelsea Wang for various duties in an intern architect position.

Yours,

Sep. 15, 2016 To whom it may concern: Chelsea Wang had been an assistant architect with Fransam for almost two years and I know her well. She took participate in several projects through production of schematic design, 3D modeling, rendering and costomer presentations materials. Chelsea is a self-motivated employee with “Can Do” attitude. She is smart, hard working, determined, and performs quite well under pressure or when facing challenges. She had also demonstrated satisfactory organizational skills when it came to work with complexity. Chelsea is a pleasant girl to work with too. She is a good listener, very sensitive to others feelings, and often revel a sense of humor. Based on my managerial experience working with over 200 young employees in mainland China, I have no doubt that Meng will be successful on her graduate study overseas, and I hope your decision on her case will be a favorite one. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any question regarding her admission.
