The Lyric Theatre Complex is a mixed-used building housing 3 theatres (Lyric Theatre, M e d i u m T h e a t re a n d S t u d i o T h e a t re ) , rehearsal rooms, F&B, performers office etc. Each theatre has its own distinct color which relates to its function. The color is not only applied in the auditoriums, but also in the correlating foyers, serving also as means of wayfinding. The circulation in the building is driven by a "Central Spine". The spine forms two curving, stacked ramps weaving around t h e t h e a t re vo l u m e s. A l o n g t h e " S p i n e " , the view of the habrour will be revealed gradually, creating an aperture effect.

KUNMING STORY RETAIL STREET URBAN & ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Role Location Year Client Project Type Size Status

Architectural Designer (Oval Partnership) Kunming, China 2016-2017 World Horti-Expo Garden Commercial | Urban Design 47307 sq.m Detailed Design

"Kunming Stor y" is a retail street design project situated in the Wor ld Hor ti-Expo G a rd e n i n Ku n m i n g, C h i n a . T h e s i t e i s heavily vegetated with both natural and manmade landscape. The whole project adopted " s t o r y t e l l i n g d e s i g n " , f ro m s i t e a n a l ys i s to detail design, we studied and designed ever y moments based on the experience Responsibility of the past and narration of the future (i.e. -Conceptual->Schematic->Detail Design Development proposed design scenario). The result is Tools: Sketch/ 3D Modelling/ Graphic Representation/ Revit a calm, low-rose retail development with -Consultants Coordination Meeting respect to the histor y of the cit y and the -Preparation of Presentation to Client existing landscape. -Preparation of Technical Drawings to Local Design Institute (LDI)

Streetscape Scale Study

The design begins with a detail site analysis, looking at the history of architecture and streetscape of the site in Kunming. The Chinese Tenent House with a pitched roof and a gable wall are the t ypical architectural features that formed the streetscape of Kunming. We studied the scale and spatial arrangement of these houses, and derived our design based on the site context - a hor ticultural garden full of landscape.

Double Roof Typology - Opened-air design with balcony and eave

Typology Study and Design After careful site and spatial studies, different t ypologies of design were developed. As this is a retail street design, retail store requirement and experienc e were c onsidered in the design process. The design resulted in a modern-day retail atmosphere with respect to the architectural and urban streetscape experience of the past.

Storytelling Design Narrati ve Design has been adopted in the whole design development. During the design proc ess, we imagined from the perspective of different visitors/ users to the site. Different spatial journeys and qualities were explored along the development. S t o r y b o a rd s, p h y s i c a l m o d e l s were great tools to inspire the master layout plan.

The notion 2018-2019 (Research + Design) of “fading memory” sparkled the interest of Public Archive Conservation exploring the topic| memory .

THE REACTION TO CONTRAST

MArch Studio Project 01 Location Year Type

Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong 2017 Collective Housing

An urban block works as an unity of contrast and c ontradictions, moments of different & distinct characters are what keeping the block alive, they are the metabolism of an u r b a n b l o c k . T h i s p ro j e c t i s i n t e n d e d t o present itself as a counter-argument to the contrast found in the site. It is a reaction to the urban contrast found in the organic site context in Sham Shui Po. By manipulating scale in terms of massing, facade, space, u r b a n i t y a n d i n t e r i o r i t y, t h e d e s i g n manufactured a series of unexpectedness throughout the spatial journey. It appears to be a regular box located in the irregularit y of Sham Shui Po, but when one walks past the threshold of the design, the irregularit y reveals in a dramatic manner.

Urban Block Study One urban block of 100m x 50m in Sham Shui Po was selected to be studied. This drawing is to express all the " c o n t ra s t " I e n c o u n t e re d in the buildings during my studies. The program mix is surprising - one unit can be residential while one unit can be a Martial Arts Studio or a brothels. The "Contrast" initiated my design.

We b e l i e v e o n l y b y u n d e rs t a n d i n g t h e past can we better design for the future. “Viewing Through the Eyes of Tenants” is an interactive installation that brings the stories of the past (North Point Estate) to now (the existing pavilion) and hopefully passes on to the future generation.

The concept of the installation work originated from the histor y of the site North Point Estate. It was built in 1957 and revolutionized Public Housing Design at that time, with a private balcony for each flat, facing the Victoria Harbour. There was also public open space in bet ween the blocks and a public transport interchange in front of the North Point Pier. The whole c ommunit y formed a strong bond with each other, serving as a backbone of the North Point neighbourhood. In 2002, the site was demolished, and no traces of the past can no longer be found on the site today.

Pulling Up-and-Down! 拉高拉低! The “balconies” are installed by a safety pulley system, allowing kids of lower height to pull them down and read the old stories written on it or as an interactive device.

Storytelling Workshop 故事未了 Storytelling workshops will be organised by local groups and former North Point estate residents (by invite) to verbally share their good old days. The “balconies” will become a storytelling media.

Writing to Share 我手寫我心 The “balconies” are installed with transparent/ colored acrylic pieces, welcoming all the former North Point estate residents or public to share their interesting stories back in the old days.

Rolling Lens is an interactive device that reinterpreted the original story of Ragdale and transform it into a modern story to tell.

ROLLING LENS RAGALE RING INSTALLATION DESIGN Location Year Project Type Status

Illinois, USA 2020 Installation | Exhibition Design Competition Entry

The original plan of Ragdale Ring was a symmetrical and static 2-D ring on a paved lawn surrounded by a low limestone wall. We retraced such important historic reference and modified them in t wo ways - one by pushing down the original ring in the plan and develop it into a visual rail on the ground and one by rotating the ring 90 degrees into a new “Lens”. By superimposing the components, a new interactive Ragdale Ring in 3-dimension is created. The horizontality ( t h e ra i l ) a n d v e r t i c a l i t y ( t h e Le n s ) a re concerted design as a new take of Ragdale Ring in 2020. With its intrinsic mobility, the Rolling Lens is a metaphor to the lens of a camera, framing different views on the site following the footsteps of the users on the campus.
