It’s that time of year again. Dark mornings, dark evenings — your soul is probably even darker. Why not warm things up with some summer festival planning? This is the better option than starting yet another Netflix series, trust.
There is something comforting about wearing a top emblazoned with mythical creatures and glitter,it gives the wearer a sense of being angelic, and fitting straight into the ‘cutsie’ trend we see today.
Think about it: it’s 23 degrees celsius outside at 8PM, you’re in a beer garden getting tipsy from a Mixed Fruits Kopparberg with your pals and you’ve all just booked tickets to an upcoming festival. Bliss, right? Now…the inevitable, and somewhat irritating question arises — what to wear.
Popularised by Italian fashion label Fiorucci, from the Autumn/Winter 2018 ‘Fiorucci Angels’ campaign, cherubs have made their way into high-street fashion. Found in the form of mesh crop tops and statement t-shirts, glittery cherub designs usually serve as a backdrop of the clothing instead of a design feature.
“Mate, I’m here. At the front! Yes, by the barrier on the left? I’m wearing bright orange. You literally can’t miss me I look like a traffic cone”. Here, a perfect example of why the neon trend is great at a festival and so, very useful. Swaths of fluorescents can be seen miles away, usually in the form of a high neck vest or very short plastic skirt. Taking inspiration from old school 1990s rave culture, or from workers on the M25, it’s become an apparent trend for 2019 festivals. Last summer saw a micro-trend of the hot pink, yellow and orange Prada bucket hats, usually worn by influencers at summer events (obviously not because it’s the only thing they can afford from the Linea Rosso collection…no judgement here). A hot tip with neon is to make sure you don’t overdo it — do you really want to look like you’ve been in an explosion in a Claire’s Accessories? Try a neon belt, bum bag or sunglasses to elevate simple look, or try layering a long sleeve tee under a t-shirt dress for a more rave-appropriate look.
You may be familiar with fat cherub characters from the back of a Skinnydip phone case or from the tattoo on a hipster girl’s arm. These chubby angels trend (also known as our nickname) are usually paired with other unearthly beings, such as unicorns and mermaids. Not forgetting these creatures come hand in hand with glitter and rainbows, which have made their way into the forefront of festival fashion and beauty. If you have ever attended any festival event — I am almost certain you have had glitter glue applied to your cheekbones.
A simple cropped cherub t-shirt works well with statement trousers, think high-shine patent or dyed leather trousers to make your look a little less holy and a lot more heavenly.
BDSM — bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism. In the words of Rihanna, whips and chains really DO excite me, and a lot of festival go-ers too. Nineties kids may remember, the era of shop such as Punkyfish, who exclusively sold kinky stockings and chains, black long line leather coats and gothic leg warmers (yes, leg warmers). Now,

Joking aside, perhaps the ‘S’ and ‘M’ of BDSM really means ‘sex’ and ‘magic’ because there is something quite wonderful about layered fishnet tights and a good ol’ pair of Doc Martins (the vegan kind, of course).
“summer goes too quickly to be wearing boring clothes” Yah, let me just lay down another gap year ‘dote before I re-fix my organic floral headband over my blow-dried blonde locks. You know the kind; the sort of person who has a whole Facebook photo album dedicated to their horse, ‘Daddy’ doesn’t spoil them but will also buy them an Audi A1, because he ‘owed it to you’.
BDSM — bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism. In the words of Rihanna, whips and chains really DO excite me, and a lot of festival go-ers too. Nineties kids may remember, the era of shops such as Punkyfish, who exclusively sold kinky stockings and chains, black long line leather coats and gothic leg warmers (yes, leg warmers). Now, these shops mainly exist online-only, besides a weird backstreet in Brighton. Brands such as Dolls Kill lead a great example in providing grunge, yet somehow cool-looking harnesses and bondage gear. I wouldn’t want to assume and suggest that wearing bondage is exclusively for certain types of music genres, but could we agree that you probably wouldn’t see someone dressed in a PVC cat suit and a harness at a Mumford & Sons gig. Let’s leave it to drum and bass ravers and hardcore metal instead.

A apparent floral trend came straight from London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2019, in particular the Richard Quinn show, in which Her Royal Heiress made a very special appearance with Anna Wintor. Vibrant floral headscarves and silk dresses walked the runway, which then made its way into the likes of brands like The Kooples, Maje and Sandro. All jokes aside, the Boho trend is something that has stuck around for a while and can be a more sophisticated look to a festival, especially for those experimenting with drugs for the first time. ‘Floaty’ Florence and The Machine type dresses are a popular choice, usually slit at the side to reveal more leg to make these types look less boring.

THE SICKEST UK FESTIVALS If it’s a crazy one dayer or a wild weekend adventure, we’ve covered all bases for you…
Glastonbury is notorious for hosting some of the biggest and most aspiring names in music, Glastonbury Festival takes place over a five-day period; come rain or shine, down in Pilton, Somerset as it has done for the past 46 years. The festival is also home to a wide variety of acts; from circus to comedy as well as a plethora of different artists spanning multiple genres.
The British festival scene bid farewell to Secret Garden Party in 2017, and in its place for 2018 –according to the general consensus among festivalgoers – was Lost Village. The intimate festival has many of the same hallmarks as Secret Garden Party, including impressive themed stages and a boutique feel. Self-dubbed as an ‘abandoned woodland village,’ the apologetically abundant line-up of live music, crème de la crème of electronic talent, comedy, talks and 10/10 eats are just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s the ultimate mecca for music lovers and hedonists almost every year and fortunately for everyone lucky enough to have a ticket, the ultimate festival experience. It’s full name actually reads Glastonbury: Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, which explains why it’s often compared to America’s Burning Man festival. Similarly, both festivals attract a multitude of hippies from far and wide. Glastonbury really comes alive after the main acts end — unlike other festivals, it has entertainment virtually all night long — and you can get up to plenty of weird and wonderful things on the farm at night if you know where to look. Not to mention the fact that the festival will no longer sell single-use plastic water bottles in bid to cut waste, which deems this event popular for environmentalists alike.

‘Glastonbury with a theme’ is the best way to summarise this dizzying romp of a festival that has you hooked- Boomtown.
Instead of flailing out of the tent blurry-eyed mid-afternoon, the emphasis at Lost Village is thatfestival goers catch the huge glittering line-up of daytime talks, comedy acts and activities. Coming back well rested from a festival? Who would have thought?
For one weekend a year, this corner of the world turns into a man made town, with pop up stages, stalls and shops. Split into districts, the ‘city’ is separated into areas each with their own line up. We like the look of Whistler’s Green for some down time and DSTRKT5 for late night partying. There’s usually something behind every door at Boomtown, we’ve heard urban legends from friends about falling into rooms and finding one man, raving alone, behind. With a line up so long it’s intimidating, we suggest you play the game where you close your eyes, wiggle your finger and go see whatever you land on, you’ll get an eclectic mix however you approach it.
In a celebration of LGBTQ+ club culture, Mighty Hoopla takes place in east London’s Victoria Park and it’s being hailed as quite the mighty pop extravaganza. Teaming up with long-beloved club nights Guilty Pleasures and Sink The Pink (as well of plenty of your other faves), Mighty Hoopla promises to be one of the parties of the year. With last year’s line-up boasting a multitude of LGBTQ+ supporting artists, such acts as Years and Years, All Saints, and Jodie Harsh – plus exclusive DJ sets from Fearne Cotton and Gok Wan – you definitely don’t want to be sitting this one out for this year’s event. As well as the promise of a great boogie, Bongo’s Bingo made an appearance last year (you know, the one you’ve seen about a million Instagram stories from), as well as karaoke collective Massaoke, and Prince night Purple Rave. Grab your glitter, dust off your dancing shoes, and get ready to rumble!

The flower child, a free spirit babe who connects the world sharing her peace, love and herbal tea. She’s considered having dreadlocks and only shopping from organic suppliers but we know she’s more into roll ups and floppy fedora hats. With her floaty cardigans and floral patterns, she’s the one at the back of the crowd connecting to her ‘spirituality’. If you want to rock Florence and The Machine style like Willow, make sure your wardrobe is stocked with cord flares, crochet cardigans and thigh-spilt skirts. Peace! 20

What’s your secret to smuggling in booze? Well, when I host my life coaching sessions in the mindfulness tent, I actually summon alcohol from spirits (if you pardon the pun!). Joking haha, I sneak my organic cold-pressed cider in with booze tubes that are hidden within tampons. You can find these on ASOS or at Urban Outfitters, otherwise you’ll have to pay the extortionate amount for a cider from the bar! I would advise buying three ciders for £10 instead just one for £5!
What do you always bring with you to a festival? I always bring a massive floppy hat (or baker boy style!) because it shields me from the sun, thanks global warming, and in the early mornings it hides my eye bags! Sun cream is essential too, and also great to hide vodka in the empty bottle after you’ve used it.
What is your top festival tip? My top festival tip is to keep it comfortable you want to make sure that whatever your wearing wont bother you, you’re there to have fun. I love a maxi dress, it keeps you cool and its super comfy. Also keep hydrated! I LOVE using my Chilly’s bottle, it keeps hot drinks hot for 12 hours and cold drinks cold for 24 hours. Glastonbury has now banned single-use plastics, so this re-usable bottle is great, and it’s pretty! You can get them in Topshop.
Describe yourself in 3 words Considerate, daring and bold
Describe Glastonbury in 3 words Community, expressive, HUGE!
What will inspire your look this season? Twiggy’s iconic flower power dress from the 70s, including her famous flower make up. Scrap the glitter as it’s not eco-friendly! Motel Rocks’s Modern Day Vintage collection is full of floaty maxi skirts in various colours and patterns, I need to stock up!
Who are looking forward to seeing the most? Obviously every artist playing at Glastonbury will be phenomenal, however I’m a little pissed that Florence + The Machine wont be playing, but I’ll have to see her on the next Lung tour. Billie Eilish will be there, I cant wait to be a moody bitch at the front of the stage. My favourite track from her currently is called ‘Bury a friend’. Miley Cyrus is headlining and I must admit she’s my guilty pleasure — if you didn’t stick with her through her Bangerzs phase, you love her now she’s her spiritual self! 24

Your definition of girl power, always seen slaying the cherub trend. May appear sweet and innocent but she’s a nightmare dressed as a daydream. Not only will she will turn the good guys bad for a weekend, she’ll leave her mark — with rhinestones, fluff and glitter of course. With her receipts looking like phone numbers, she wants it, and she’s got it! To flaunt it like Rose, express yourself with sassy text t-shirts, rhinestone accessories and ruffles. You got this! 27

What’s your top tip for Mighty Hoopla? Literally be yourself. Mighty Hoopla is all about LGBTQ+ acceptance and pride — be proud of who the f*** you are! Shout about it, identify and kiss whoever you like! Everyone is sharing the love, share yours too. If any of your mates work for the NHS, they can also score a free ticket!
What’s your pulling technique? I bring a little jar of this edible glitter that you put in a drink. I approach a hottie and offer to put some in their drink (obviously not in a dodgy way!). They are so amazed at the sparkling drink they fall into my arms. Also because I’m a 10/10 so who wouldn’t?!
Why do you love this festival so much? It’s the '90s nostalgia (B*Witched and Vengaboys), club vibes (The Glory and Sink the Pink are there, for crying out loud) and fancy food vendors galore.
Describe yourself in 3 words Bubbly, outspoken, nonchalant
Describe Mighty Hoopla in 3 words
How far do you see the girl power trend lasting? Feminism is turning into fashion and slogan t-shirts are becoming increasingly popular. For example, last seasons Viktor & Rolf saw dresses emblazoned with words such as ‘FEMINISM OR GO HOME’ which I LOVED. This trends is very similar to the cherub cutsie trend, who wouldn’t want to be holy?
Who’s your favourite feminist? Kelley Moran is my ultimate power crush — she’s great at rinsing Twitter trolls. For example, she posted ‘When someone’s calling you fat but you take that as a compliment so you just stand there being thick like:’ with a hot photo of her with angel wings. She’s great.
What will you bring to this festival? As this is a day festival, you can travel light. I love my giant pride flag, which I also wrap around me when it gets cold in the evening. I also, my biodegradable glitter, I get this from Gypsy Shrine as they do great colours. Also bring a cheesy smile as there is non-stop entertainment from your favourite drag artists.
Open, liberating, friendly

THE GRUNGE QUEEN
MEET BLADE
Be warned, Blade is as sharp as she sounds. When she’s not cutting shapes to her favourite drum and bass artists, she sitting alone in a dark room… She’s a lone wolf who doesn’t like to be tied down — unless into a harness or wrapped in chains. Howl like Blade this festival season wearing tight leather corsets; mesh skirts and plenty of chokers — all in black of course. Good hunting!

FROM SOLITARE TO RAVER
What’s your ultimate festival act you’d love to see?
What’s your essential item for this festival?
I know this is going to sound weird, but id love to see Sleeping With Sirens or Bring Me The Horizon. The mosh pits will be epic. I also find emo boys really hot!
I like to bring a pair of plyers. Yes, plyers! Not because im going to fix a sink, but there’s always a chance my chains will get caught on something. Or that someone’s tied them way too tight…but sometimes that’s a good thing if you know what I mean!
Does anyone ever take your harnesses a little too seriously? Yes of course, my parents think im a little bit weird but I like the attention. Lost Village is another world; you can escape and wear what you want for the weekend. Who cares if I’m only wearing bondage items? Not me!
Who’s your girl crush? Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless and Gossip Girl. I love her split personality…it’s almost like me on the weekeneds. I love the fact she was wearing a black corset on the red carpet at the age of fifteen, how cool. 43
Model: Tamara Paine Photography: Erin O Cain Makeup, Hair and Styling: Chloe Davie
What’s your favourite thing about Lost Village? The Healing Hub. It’s an intimate session in groups of eight (your whole gang can go with you) and it covers meditation, sound healing and spiritual workouts. Who knew you’d actually feel good after a festival!
Describe yourself in 3 words Outgoing, adventurous, boujie
Describe Lost Village in 3 words Intimate, fanciful and completely mental!

Venus is top of the guest list but never at the bottom of the crowd, thanks to her trusty platform boots. Like a techno-loving fly, she’s most attracted to neon lights. She’s the last one raving when the music stops and the first to host the after party, there’s never a dull moment with Venus. Buzz around like Venus wearing neon co-ords, skimpy cycling shorts and vibrant hair extensions. That bass drop though! 48

Describe yourself in three words Party animal, confident and mysterious
Describe Boomtown in 3 words Otherworldly, secretive and lively.
What’s your craziest Boomtown memory? When I was in the Metropolis district, I somehow blagged my way backstage at Eats Everything. I was dancing at the DJ decks and watching the crowd. The vibe was crazy mental.
What item will you bring with you? I bring a crazy amount of funky sunglasses; I always tend to lose them in the rave so it’s great to have lots of pairs. There’s cool fake Gucci ones on Depop or Dolls Kill go great patterned ones. Jaded London do super cool flame glasses but they’re so cool I’d be scared to lose them!
Why do you love Boomtown so much? It’s a virtual world for the weekend. It’s just crazy…the ‘town mayor’ gives you tasks for the weekend to visit different districts and to find new characters. It’s almost like a festival version of Elrow, which is otherworldly.
What would you advise to a Boomtown virgin? It can be extremely overwhelming because of how realistic the town is, you have to have to remember you are all on this mission together. Everyone’s on the same level, no f***s are given are given during the weekend. Don’t be scared to go out your comfort zone, you got this!
Who is your inspiration this season? Mika Francis always has really cool hairstyles that inspire me. They’re mostly wigs, which means they’re a little inappropriate for a rave. I use Unicorn Glow clip in hair \ extensions, which come in fun colours like lime green and bright orange. They are quite expensive but Ebay do great knock-offs. 54
