Traditional methods for designing collegiate educational buildings are becoming increasingly outdated in the rapidly evolving landscape of education. The conventional approach often results in static structures that struggle to adapt to the dynamic needs of students and faculty. In contrast, embracing modular design with a carefully curated kit of parts offers a flexible and responsive solution. As the structure stands, much of the circulation and third places have been pushed to the exterior to publicize collaboration and creativity while shielded from the elements by an immersive canvas wrap enveloping the entirety of the structure. The Stratus is lifted delicately for native plantings to spread across the site.

Constructed around trains, commuter rails, and buses, the Transportation Hub is designed to respond to the commuters’ needs. This bridges the gap between work and home. The hub responds to the notions of mobility. The roof structure reaches out to welcome the buses and creates shelter for pedestrians. The hub is constructed out of cross laminated timber, which is local to the area. This material is capable of being dismounted and relocated, furthering the concept of mobility. The building is lifted from the ground to influence a pause in a busy commuter’s day. Located in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, the hub delicately rests in resemblance to nature and the local culture.

Two buildings are composed of CLT structural cages on which sit the prefabricated CLT residential units. CLT and the biophilic operable moss membrane are the two major carbon sequestration strategies utilized. The CLT cage is open to the exterior allowing natural ventilation into the interior courtyard, and stack ventilation, that allows the building to stay cool in the summer. Finally, using the existing slope of the roof canopies, a rainwater collection system sends collected water to cisterns installed below the courtyard steps for use in on-site irrigation of native plants and plumbing.

The Biophilic Operable Membrane is a conceptual design that in practice would be capable of Carbon Sequestration. Not only at its core does this adaptable building facade facilitate optimization of occupant preference concerning shading, but the moss layer integral to the construction of individual operable panels also serves as a carbon sink as it removes carbon dioxide from surroundings. Research has shown that 3.5 meters of moss provides the same carbon dioxide filtration power as 275 trees, meaning that the application of it as a material in this adaptive system is incredibly valuable in a dense urban environment. This adaptive system can be applied to a range of buildings with flat facades and was designed with versatility in mind.

COVID-19 brought tremendous change to the functionality of a home. The garage became adaptable and suitable for businesses and private work areas. The door dismisses the notions of the typical garage door and acts as a blend of the interior and exterior. The bottom panels open for natural ventilation and the middle panels fold down into the garage acting as a work surface. The garage is operated by a pulley system, that when pulled lifts the garage into an awning position and operates without power.

Nestled in the alpines of Washington’s Cascades, this conceptual structure changes the visitors’ perspectives on the surrounding landscape. This is due to the form and juxtaposition of the mountain peaks. The curation of the form originated from an abstract exercise with a theme of reappearing actions. Materiality was later developed, and the pattern of the triangular façade transitioned into two separate alterations of cedar running vertically and perpendicular.

A lamp and table crafted from salvaged materials discovered in dumpsters and scrap bins during work at the Fab lab on campus. The reclaimed pieces bore traces of nails and indentations, which were intentionally retained in the final design. The scraps came from a decommissioned grain elevator from the Palouse. Each component features a straightforward structure to fulfill its purpose and allows for effortless adjustment and disassembly, breaking down into individual components. These creations exemplify the art of building something meaningful from seemingly discarded material.

I acquired my creative passion of film photography from my sister while she was earning an art degree from the University of Washington. My eye for creative shots has progressed in relation to my architecture knowledge. Thus far, my favorite subjects to photograph are architecture, landscapes, and portraits. I attempt to capture the subject as closely as I see it, looking for the beauty and light captured through the human eye. The slow process of film photography intrigues me, and I love the rawness of each photograph I develop.
