Carers are paid the lowest benefit allowance of its kind, and often the role involves physically changing, cleaning, and medicating their loved one. This all goes overlooked by society and the systems which are supposed to support the most vulnerable. While pendant alarms have a whole team behind them, a dependant alarm is all to often a child, with their parent’s safety and welfare in their hands. It was estimated in a 2010 study that a quarter of a million children provide home disability care to a parent or family member in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. As of 2020, Carers UK estimated 1.3 million people in an unpaid care role during the pandemic. Shamefully, it is boasted how much money unpaid care work saves the UK economy - 132 billion pounds a year. But at what cost?
