CITY

BREAK

EDITOR’S LETTER VOL.22

ISSUE

Words by CHLOE WILLIAMS

F

or this issue, I wanted to focus on city travels. I’ve lived in a city my whole life and its likely that I will continue doing so; but if you were to ask me what’s the best thing to do in the city that I live in. I wouldn’t have much to say, that’s because I’ve never taken the time to appreciate the city that I’ve grown up in. Even when I try to, I always find myself rushing around, being impatient or trying to not look like a tourist. I have recently taken a deep interest in traveling especially to cities abroad. I find traveling to cities interesting and inspiring as they offer a new breath of fresh air; a new outlook of living. When we think of going on holiday its typically to fly to one of the hottest countries and compete with friends and family on how tanned you have become, or the amount of cliché holiday pictures that you have taken. I personally don’t think a holiday needs to be like this. A holiday is a break. A time to re-organise our minds. Visiting a city makes you simply stop and embrace the new environment that you are in. For those living in the city like myself that’s what we are missing. We are so use to the fast pace life style that we fail to appreciate the city that we live in. Everything seems so robotic to us. We do the same routine and tend to travel to the same places just because it’s norm. When being a tourist you have no choice but to slow down and join the new way of life of others.

This issue will feature every thing to do with travelling to cities abroad. London is one of the most popular cities to visit and travel to, so it very unlikely that it would be seen as a holiday destination. However, we have a different outlook on why London is a city that should be visited often. (p. 8) When in Rome do what Romans do has always been a classic saying and is also the centre of where our editorial shoot was featured. (p.10) Lisbon Portugal is a beautiful city to visit with its culture and tradition. At Suitcase have found the perfect guide for travelling around the lovely Lisbon city. (p. 14) A hotel review like no other Sweden has a hidden gem in Malmo called Master Johan, with a name like that it could only make you want to find out more. (p.18) Saving the best till last we have been fortunate enough to interview actress Tracee Ellis Ross who has given us style tips and tricks for travelling around any country as well as give us exclusive pictures from her holiday adventures. (p.20) 500words

It forces you to take in your surroundings and appreciate the little things, such as the way the locals communicate with each other even the architecture of the buildings may bring you inspiration

Old Love For London British born Lisa Potter revisits London on a business trip and find reconnects her love for the city.

Photos by KARVAN JOHNS

I

owe a lot to the city of London, not just because it shaped who I am as a person but it’s a city that developed my mind and opened a creative world. Moving to India for work meant that I had to say goodbye to everything that I was a custom to. So, when my director told me that I would be taking a business trip to London I jumped at the chance. Living in India for the past five years meant that I had experienced a big lifestyle change the culture, language, weather the food it’s all different. However, I’ve grown to the ways of Indian living. Whilst being on the plane I started to reminisce about the life that I had left behind along with my teenage years that I would only dream to re-live. Explaining London to people who have not been is hard. It’s likely that the first thing they would think of is the typical images that the media posts like London eye, Buckingham palace, Oxford street and the Big Ben. Oxford street is every tourist shopping point. It has lots of shops that range from being expensive to cheap. There is never a dull moment when being in Oxford street with street performers that range with singing and drum playing. I guess that’s what makes Oxford street such a popular tourist point. For me it’s another tourist attraction and as someone who lived in London I tend to find those types of places cliché as they are only a small part of London. As I mentioned I owe a lot to the city of London. My hopes and the dreams… everything seemed possible here. My teenage years are where I discovered another side to London, the urban artistic side which is one of the reasons why I have the job I have today. London is full of creative places and the best ones are the hidden gems, taking a trip to Soho and Brick lane you are bound to find street art that is full of vibrant colours with a strong story behind it. Once I arrived in London I felt a sudden comfort, I really had landed back home. I could hear the buzz and chatter of others. After a couple days of being back I wanted to see what was new and still around. I took a trip into central London and decided I’d take the tube. The tube is one of the busiest and fastest ways of travelling around London and there’s always something happening down there, with skilled musicians trying to get discovered its always it’s at times strange to not hear music being played in the underground. There’s always a sudden heat that is in the tube even when if outside is cold. I had forgotten how accessible London was and always could be too with all the tube lines in London connected so before you know it you could be in another area that you wouldn’t have even thought was still in London. I observed that a lot of people in London take the little things for granted, even myself when I was living there. When being on the tube I felt a sense of collectiveness. Most people on the tube tend to read the metro newspaper and then politely leave it behind for the next person to read. It’s the norm. Continuing on with my journey around London I also had to take advantage of using the buses. So many people use the buses to commute around London, and you never quite know who you may meet on the journey. When I was living in London I didn’t have time to stop and chat. When rushing to work and home all I could think about was when the next stop was, but as I haven’t experienced it in such a long time it tends to not affect me like it did when I was living in London. I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with an old man about the contrasted between what living was like when he was my age compared to what it is now.

LONDON, ENGLAND

7

He made me realise a lot, such as to embrace every aspect of my youth because before I would know it, it would be finished. He expressed the fact that I should even be more grateful about the stages in life that I’m going through and accomplishments that I had made in my life this far. As I mentioned before London always has a lot to offer and stories that bring inspiration are the best especially from strangers. I had regretted not coming back home sooner. I missed out on so much as I had forgot how much fun being in London was and is. Reviewing my trip, I remembered why I loved this place. In London, you can be in the busiest area and still find peace and quietness. For example, going to the Battersea park on a sunny day. London is surrounded with so much traffic and noisy but still appear quiet. An oxymoron at its finest. You can sit on the river bank and watch all the boats going past or walk through the large flower gardens. In India, they don’t have parks like in London. They tend to have temples which are beautiful and are the best for taking a picture off, but it doesn’t offer you the freedom that parks in London do. Going out for drinks with old friends brought back the good times and the freeness that we all had. I loved how we all laughed and joked into the night. It was a typical girl’s night that I had longed for since leaving London. There’s always that one friend that wants to go on a detour around the place, and I so happened to be round one of my friends like that. We ended up at what has to be the best place I’d visited at night. Leister square at night is full of some much energy and character, the strip is lined with drunk friends that have just come out of the club from a stag doo or hen night; with their loud chanting and child-like behaviour. Street performers with their unique flare and motivation to stay out all day to gather spare changed from people passing by. At night, the street performers are just happy to entertain a crowd of people and tourist finally getting their last photographs before the night is completely over. A city is a place that’s always changing and developing, nothing in London tends to stay the same apart from a British cup of tea. But most things change and develop for the better. There’s always an exhibition or attract that will never be the same, this means that you have to live in the moment in London before it’s too late. As just like that its gone. I left India for a change and a job opportunity. But I forgot what I would be missing once I moved away from London. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like if I didn’t come to London on a business trip. I might have not have fallen back in love with London. As much as I loved the person I become due to living in a city like London, at times you can become stuck in a bubble of your own. But not permanently living in London meant that I see the advantage of being here and can appreciate it more. I believe the saying goes distance makes the heart grow fonder. 1275 Words

A Hotel Story

Master Johan Malmo

Words by

ANDREW BLAKE

I

n the 1920’s a Swedish born Mr Johan opened a hotel called “Malmo’s Home” in the heart of Malmo. The success rates hit the roof and Mr Johan and his hotel was one of the most talk about things in Malmo. Malmo’s Home was filled with guest every day and weekend. Mr Johan was also renowned for throwing some of the best parties in the 1920’s, the parties were said to have live bands of Jazz players. These stories were published across all the newspapers in Sweden. Malmo’s home had been come a sensational place, filled with wealthy business men and their families and friends. His grandson Oscar branded the hotel making it also a bar and restaurant. In remembrance of his grandfather he re-named the hotel Master Johan. The hotel is still luxurious and opulent. Master Johan has now been labelled as Malmo’s hidden gem due to the past history events. The hotel is a 10minute walk away from the train station so it’s very accessible for anyone travelling and wanting to travel around the city. The boutique looking hotel has taken the modern approach to the vintage roaring 20’s interior design. The hotel has been fitted with a unique selection of burnt oranges, deep cranberry, emerald green, teal and lilac in the finest material of velvet accompanied by the colour gold. Master Johan has 6 different types of rooms and 40 rooms in total, that you can select when making a booking at the hotel. Each room has been design with a touch of velvet, keeping in line with the feel of lavish living.

The rooms have been designed with an open layout with large windows to allow for most of the sun light to come through as well as to allow all guest to see the best views that Malmo has for Sweden. Inspiration that has come from the Victorian era with the pattern plaster wall design, the balcony is every photographers dream spot. The walls of the balcony have been covered in candy floss pink to match the flamingo print carpet as well as the flamingo 3D chair which is one of the hotels features. Along the balcony there are potted ivy bushes that drape down each balcony section. TRAVEL JOURNAL

How do you prepare for a trip? For me, planning is key. I need to be organised and make plans. I tend to plan my outfits out for my holiday and just to see roughly how many items I’m taking with me, so I don’t end up arriving on my holiday rushing around to find a certain clothing item because I didn’t spend time planning. But remember with planning nothing is setting stone so allow room for unforeseen events.

Can you share any packing tips? Packing tips… let’s see. I’m known to pack the whole world with me so that might not be the best advice. So, don’t pack your whole world with you only the essentials. I wish I listened to my own advice on my last holiday I ended up with an unbelievable amount of baggage. My second advice would be layout everything you need in advance just because it means that you can see what to pack and what is unnecessary to take with you.

What is your suitcase? My suitcases are black, shiny hard-shell suitcases. Something simple! Oh, and I always travel with my big Gucci rucksack as overhead luggage as I can have my hands free to carry extra things or move around more freely. Travelling with a rucksack is so useful.

What do you wear to travel in? Anything comfortable! I wear leggings or jogging bottoms with a basic tee shirt or a jumper in case its cold, smart looking trainers and lastly a blazer… it gives me a chic look towards my outfit. Then my reading glasses I like to get my head into a good book for the flight ahead.

What are your travel beauty essentials? I would certainly recommend having a pre-flight skin care routine, this includes using a moisturiser that’s hydrating and having a facial ritual which I use before the flight takes off and just before it lands. I also tend to carry my favourite bold lipstick in red, it really helps to make you look glamorous after travelling seven hours on a flight. If I stay in a hotel which I tend not to as much is to have a private floor with a room with a panoramic view, I want to see it all, which tends to be me having to stay on one of the highest floors of the hotel. It’s very important for me to stay in a place that looks like home but reminds me that I’m away to relax and have fun. I sometimes I’m inclined to not stay in hotels and opt for staying in villas or renting out homes.

Things you always pack in your suitcase? Jeans, blazer, court heels, t-shirt, leather biker jacket, blouse, sandals oversized shirt and a clutch bag.

What do you think makes a good hotel? I would say the location and service. I need to be able to be in a location that is private on holiday and having me time I don’t want to be bugged by anyone or anything. The service needs to next to perfect, I tend to spend a lot of money on get away trips so I expect to see my money worth of service.

And airports? Due to my mum being Diana Ross having her as a Mom means that I’m already going to be recognised by the public and then being an actress gives more exposure to more people knowing who I am. Therefore, I need an airport to provide a private area for me to exit and jump straight into the car. I hate when there are lots of paparazzi taking pictures in your least glam moments… stepping of a plane.

Don’t leave home without these beauty essentials? A good hydrating sunblock and the perfect red lipstick; MAC Ruby Woo.

Your travel play-list ? I listen to a bit of everything, but the main genre of music would be a mixture of Jazz, Neon Soul, Funk and R’n’B.

What are three books you would take with you while travelling? Only three that’s hard… well I would recommend what I last read which was The Rest Of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness. My 2nd book would be on poetry The sun and her flowers by Rupi Kaur, something light weight to carry but full of so much meaning. Travelling should bring feelings of enlightenment and inspiration, that’s why having a poetry book is vital when I travel. Lastly I would pick up a newspaper around area, its good to read the news and how amazing is it to read the local news around you too, I mean you never know what might be interesting to read or even check out.

One piece of travel advice? Don’t be stuck behind a camera taking pictures all the time. I don’t think we realise how much we do it. We all love to capture a moment but being in another country is special and I think it needs all the attention you can give it. Lastly have four pairs of shades. I have four pairs. I tend to break my shades or lose them so providing myself with a backup seems only smart. 1000words
