PAGE 1: ARTICLE 1 (MAKEUP BRANDS THAT TEST ON ANIMALS) According to animal rights organisation PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), brands such as L'Oreal, Estee Lauder, Olay, Revlon and Clarins are all guilty of testing their products on animals 'at some stage of development'. They say practice is still taking place and because it’s an issue of cost, as animal testing can be cheaper and easier than many humane methods. These methods include trials using human cells and tissues, advanced computer-modelling techniques and studies with human volunteers. Some of these cosmetic brands sell cruelty-free products but have to comply with local law abroad-which in some cases demands that creams; lotions and make-up are tested on animals. Any cosmetic brand that sells their goods in China submits them to be tested in Chinese labs, where more than 300,000 animals are used each year. Companies including L’Oreal, Revlon and Olay have policies on their websites which state that they do not test on animals anywhere in the world except when required by law. Some companies that do not test on animals include brands such as: Nars, Hourglass, Too-Faced, Anastasia Beverley Hills and The Body Shop.

PAGE 2: (ARTICLE 2) YOUTUBE VIDEO ‘YOU LOOK DISGUSTING’

Earlier in the year, youtube vloger Em Ford showed her bare face to over 100,000 Youtube subscribers. She made this short video, where the video starts out showing her without no makeup and headings surrounding her which were real-life cruel comments that users left, some of which include ‘WTF is wrong with her face?’ and “You look disgusting.” She goes on to cover her blemishes with a full face of makeup which then shows headings pop up on the screen displaying positive and complimentary messages she’s received when her makeup is on. But then, those quickly turn into accusations that her showing her bareface, then showing her with makeup is misunderstood by some people. ‘This is why I have trust issues’ read one of the comments. This video’s aim is in my opinion, to show the unrealistic expectations that society sets, especially for women. It is like some people are saying a make-up less face is unattractive but if you’re wearing makeup it is classified as ‘false advertising’. The aim of this video, it to show that no matter what you look like, you are beautiful and you shouldn’t put people down for their appearance.

PAGE 3: (ARTICLE 3) Review on a makeup product AUSTRALIS CONTOUR KIT The Australis ‘AC ON TOUR’ Contouring and Highlighting Kit is a kit that consists of 3 highlighting shades and 3 contouring shades. You can sculpt and define your face using these powders which are designed to highlight and contour your face. I believe this is a really good kit if you are starting out with makeup and are still learning how to contour and highlight your face. It is also a great kit for young girls who are still in high school and earn pocket money or if they have a part time job as it retails at Priceline in Australia for $16.95. I did quite a bit of research before I decided to make this purchase and there were many different opinions on this kit. There were a lot of people saying that it is quite pigmented and that the contouring shades showed up ‘muddy’ on their face as well as even saying it looked like they had just put dirt on their face. After having this product for about 6 months and using it on a regular basis when applying my makeup, I disagree. From the contouring shades, I find that the orangey brown colour on the bottom left of the kit works really well with my skin tone and I don’t find that it looks muddy at all. The shades are definitely very pigmented which I think is a good thing, but they are also very powdery. So I just use a small amount when I’m carving out my cheekbones and then build up the colour if needed. As for the highlighting shades, I love the yellow powder. I use it to set my concealer under my eyes and find it really brightens up my under eye area. Overall, I think the Australis ‘AC ON TOUR’ Contouring and Highlighting Kit is great and definitely worth the money. It is affordable and I think the shades in the kit would work well with many different skin tones.

PAGE 4: ARTICLE 4- WHICH EYESHADOW COLOURS BEST SUITS YOUR EYE COLOUR? / TIPS BROWN EYES: Most colours work well with brown eyes but neutral shades like a shimmery brown really accentuate the eyes. If you’re going for a natural everyday look, you can use a light matte colour such as a cream colour on the base of the lid; apply a medium colour in the crease such as a medium brown. I also find that the eyeshadow colour you apply in the crease, if you use a pencil brush and apply some to your lower lash line it makes the eyes stand out a lot more and darkens up the look a bit. For a night time look for brown eyes, I find that a bright blue colour (a cobalt blue) or different shades of purple look stunning. For a smoky eye you could even add blue or purple as a base colour and throughout the crease gradually apply a dark brown or black.

BLUE EYES: Light, neutral tones best complement blue eyes. A shimmery bronze colour all over the lid really works well with blue eyes. I also think for a night time look a smoky eye using browns and black throughout the crease intensifies the look a lot more and can really bring out the colour of the blue eyes. Applying a black eyeliner or a dark blue would also bring out the eye colour a lot more too.

GREEN EYES: Any neutral, earthy shades look stunning with green eyes. As green eyes are a light colour, you don’t have to worry about accentuating the eyes and bringing them out so using earthy shades work really well. For a night time look, a muted purple is the perfect pop of colour.

HAZEL EYES: Metallic shades help make hazel eyes stand out. Such as a metallic brown that has a lot of shimmer in it. Pick up on the green with a purple shadow or use taupe shadows to play up the light brown colour.

PAGE 5: ARTICLE 5 BEST MASCARA’S UNDER $20 Rimmel London 100% Waterproof Mascara Essence I Love Extreme Mascara, Black Rimmel Scandal Eyes Lycra Flex Mascara Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara

1.

Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara ($5.75)

Due to the plastic wand, it thickens the lashes while separating them. It is also a non smudge proof. The texture is great: think and a little dry once you’ve used it a few times which is also the reason why it does such a great job at thickening your lashes and adding volume instead of just glueing them together like most very wet mascaras do. Again, it is only $5.75 and definitely worth the money.

2. Essence I Love Extreme Volume Mascara ($5.75) This is a great mascara which doesn’t clump up your eyeleashes which is probably one of the best things you want to find in a a mascara as finding a mascara that doesn’t clump your eyelashes is a rare thing. It does the job, doesn’t smudge, doesn’t irritate your eyes and it is a cheap and affordable mascara which is great because you can throw it away after 2-3 months of use, without worrying that you’ve wasted your money.

3. Rimmel London Scandal Eyes Lycra Flex Mascara ($16.95)

This mascara adds volume, applies evenly, defines and sepetates, doesn’t clump and has a very big brush which will ensure to coat all your lashes.

4. Rimmel London Waterproof mascara ($12.95) Really good mascara for the day time. It has little to no clumps, not dry and good colour coverage. 1 layer of mascara is enough. Multiple coats might make it clump. This mascara spreads your lashes and it slightly lengthens them.

5. Maybelline New York Great Lash Waterproof mascara ($12.95) Lash building brush makes it easy to get a full lash look without clumps. Also non-smudging. The brush is kind of spiral look to the brush that does not really make your eyelashes look voluminous but lengthens them pretty well. This mascara also holds a curl well and does not flake or smear by the time you take off the mascara.

QUESTION AND ANSWER PAGE WITH ADVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE 1. I’m at school and am given a budget of $10 per week; I’m looking for cheap but good quality makeup. What would you recommend? Foundation: Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation This foundation is available at a number of different stores such as Target, Kmart, Chemist Warehouse and Priceline under any Rimmel London counter. This foundation is a 30 ml tube and comes in 7 different shades to match your skin tone. It is $14.95 from Priceline which is a very affordable price for a foundation as the usual prices are from $20 and can go up to the price of $50 for a high-end foundation. The consistency of this foundation is quite thick but once blended on the skin it isn’t as thick. For someone who is starting out with makeup or is still in high school, I’d really recommend this foundation. The only negative thing I would say about this foundation is that it doesn’t work well with dry skin, but works perfectly for normal or oily skin. It provides a full coverage and is definitely worth trying out. 2. How much is it to get a full face of makeup done at a professional makeup counter for an event? 3. Is it a bad thing to sleep with your makeup on? Yes it is, makeup can clog up your pores while you sleep which can result in the development of acne. One night of sleeping in your makeup is unlikely to cause long-lasting damage to your skin however, each night you sleep in your makeup the more your pores become clogged. When you sleep in your eyeshadow, you can clog the little oil glands and hair follicles on your eyelids. This can cause infection like styes. The oil in your t-zone acts as food for the bacteria that’s left on foundation, increasing the possibility of bacterial overgrowth and infection overnight. Not cleaning the skin can make dead skin cells build up in the hair follicles and cause blackheads. When you sleep in your mascara and eyeliner, it gets on your pillow and ends up in your eyes, causing irritation. Plus, your mascara will flake off roughly, pulling some of your eyelashes out with it. Aside from the fact that you can ingest your lipstick, waxes in many lip products all lead to clogged pores in the borders of your pucker, which could turn into small blackheads.

4. I’m in high school and work part time, what high end foundation would you recommend? NARS Sheer Glow Foundation 5. What is a good cleanser for the day time? The purpose of a cleanser is to get rid of the dirt and oil that builds up on your face throughout the day. A cleanser also works to remove any makeup you have on your face. There are many different skin brands out there which will have good cleansers such as Biore, Cetaphil, Simple and Dove. I’d recommend just going into your local pharmacy and having a look. It really depends on your skin type as to which cleanser will work best with your skin but I would recommend using a light cleanser in the morning. 6. What is a good cleanser for the night time?

For the night time, I’d suggest a heavier cleanser that is either a scrub or foam which will really help to properly clean your skin and get rid of the dirt and oil that has built up throughout the day. 7. How can I tell what my skin type is? Normal skin is not too dry and not too oily. It has: no or few imperfections, no severe sensitivity, barely visible pores, a radiant complexion. `

Combination skin type: A combination skin type can be dry or normal in some areas and oily in others, such as the t-zone (nose, forehead and chin). Many people have combination skin, which may benefit different types of skin care in different areas. Combination skin can produce: overly dilated pores, blackheads, shiny skin. Dry skin type: Dry skin can produce almost visible pores, dull, rough complexion, red patches, less elasticity and more viable lines. Oily skin type: Oily skin can produce enlarged pores, dull or shiny, thick complexion, blackheads, pimples or other blemishes. 8. How do I choose the correct foundation colour? To choose the correct foundation colour, you test a small amount on your jawline and bring it down to your neck. The aim with foundation is you want it to match the colour of your neck. You also don’t want the foundation to be too light on your face as you will find it washes you out. If you choose a darker foundation, make sure you blend the foundation down to your neck. 9. How do I contour my face, depending on my face shape? *****************beauty manual ********************* Round face: contour under the cheekbones Oval: contour under the cheekbones, highlight above the cheekbones Square: contour under the cheekbones, and along the jaw line Long: contour under the cheekbones, on the forehead and on the chin Diamond: contour the jaw, highlight the forehead and chin Triangular: contour under the cheekbones

10. What is the use of a face primer? Primer helps makeup stay put longer by smoothing the surface of the skin and, sometimes, gripping onto your makeup so it stays put. Primer creates a protective barrier over the skin, as well as seals in and protects any treatment products used during your daily skincare routine. So primer actually seals in the stuff you layered on before it. 11. What moisturisers would you recommend? For the day time and night time? Day: protects skin from dehydration and helps maintain moisture balance. Some have sun protection. These are preferred. Suitable for all skin types depending on formulation. Evening: protects skin from dehydration and helps maintain moisture balance. Usually richer or more active products designed to work on skin overnight. Suitable for all skin types depending on formulation.

PAGE 9: MAGAZINE REVIEW

ALLURE

Allure focuses on beauty, fashion and women’s health. It offers good advice on all these topics but recently I have noticed there has been a lot more advertising then reviews or a good load of useful information that I would prefer to see more of in this magazine. There are a lot less articles and a lot more advertisements which can be good as it informs the reader about new products or new beauty services, etc. But, in my opinion I would prefer to read more articles to do with things such as makeup advice from professionals or even just other people’s personal reviews on products. I do think this magazine offers good advice for women, especially if you’re interested in beauty and makeup. I like how the magazine itself it set out.

PAGE 10: FOUR BRIEF LETTERS TO THE EDITOR 1. COMPLAINTS IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY Good things in the beauty industry: The Body Shop is a shop found in many different shopping centres here in Australia. It is a shop which Offer products such as body lotions, perfumes and also makeup. The products are 100% vegetarian and are never tested on animals. I think it is great the fact that this shop sells products that are 100% vegetarian and the products are never tested on animals.

2. Complaining about the price of high end makeup The price of high end makeup these days is ridiculous. Brands like MAC, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Too-Faced and NARS are very expensive here in Australia. In the beauty world, we often hear great reviews on a lot of different products from these brands in the influences of make-up artists and beauty YouTube’s. A lot of these products that are claimed to be really good such as NARS Sheer Glow foundation or a palette from Too Faced and a lot of the time they are really good products but here in Australia, these products are extremely overpriced. For example, a product such as a foundation from M.A.C called ‘Studio Fix Fluid’ Foundation is retailed for $49.00 here in Australia. If you compare this to a foundation that you can buy from a pharmacy or a beauty store, you can get a foundation for roughly $20.00 which could be just as good. I myself use a mousse foundation by Rimmel London which is matte and pretty much lasts me all day. There are many different foundations from brands such as Maybelline and Rimmel London which you can get foundations for roughly the same price. I do think some products are worth the price, because once you start using products that are high end you really notice the difference. I just think that a lot of these brands are overpriced. 3. Beauty school (example: elly lukas) and now owns their own business Elly Lukas is a beauty therapy college in Melbourne which offers courses to do with the beauty and spa industry. Through Elly Lukas, you can do many different courses- Diploma of Beauty Therapy, Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy, Certificate III in Beauty Services, and Certificate II in Retail Makeup & Skincare. 4. VinyI lux nail polish I cannot keep regular nail polish on my fingers for more than 3 days or so without it chipping. I have tried all kinds of different base coats and top coats but nothing seems to work. I discovered Vinyl lux nail polish through a friend. I have found that I will usually get at least 7 days of chip free wear unless I am doing something major such as swimming. These polishes have made my life so much easier. These nail polishes dry super quick and they seem to add some strength to my nails as well. I have not had any issues with staining despite no base coat. Overall, I really like the vinyl lux nail polishes.
