01 . DESIGN FOR CO-LIVING

IN THIS MODULE, WE WERE BECOMING AN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER AS A CREATIVE AND AN ORGANIZING FORCE BEHIND A COLLECTIVE HOUSING PROJECT, BUT ALSO ACTED AS A RESIDENT AND A COMMUNITY MEMBER TAKING AN ACTIVE PART IN THE DESIGN PROCESS OF ANOTHER HOUSING PROJECT LED BY OUR PEERS.

PROJECT TYPE: RESIDENTIAL, COLIVING YEAR: 2020 LOCATION: Melbourne, Australia AREA: 1500m²

BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

SITE LOCATION This site is at the corner of High Street and Walker Street in Northcote, within the city of Darebin. To the south, the original site is bounded by Merri Creek linear reserve.

MICRO CONDITION According to sun path diagram, in summer mid-day, because the sun directly goes into the buildings from top, there is not much shadow to surrounding vegetation, therefor the tree on south could absorb the heat and bring wind to the site

DESIGN INTENT The unlimited community is committed to creating a rich life experience space for young groups, where you can work, have meetings, can exhibit sales, Airbnb, and also can be a shared space for cooking and gathering. The unlimited community creates flexibility through variable walls to meet the needs of residents for future development. There are many different types of floor plans to choose from to suit different groups. While satisfying privacy, people are encouraged to get out of the room, out of the home, and join the shared space to enrich life. Residents are encouraged to reorganize the space, break boundaries to form an unlimited community and allow users to stimulate imagination and creativity in the open space experience.

HOUSING UNIT TYPE

The whole community is placed at a 45-degree angle to the street. This is because the streets are relatively narrow and placed at an angle can minimize the visibility to neighbours on the near street and maximize the privacy of residents. But also there are several void street in between so that it will not block the view to the creek landscape

Motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles are parked on the street side of the community, ensuring the safety and freedom of residents’ activities within the community.

The ground floor of the community is mainly function and activity space. the quite and active space been separ at e. It can be tt er provide residents with a comfortable life experience.

02 . DESIGN FOR THE CITY

A key concern of this project is to engage with how architecture can shape, promote, and engage with the nature of public space in the contemporary city. Beyond the clichĂŠ of the town square we will consider how space, programmatic organization, and architectural expression can each serve to demonstrate a commitment to the public. In this studio we will pursue an architecture for all. Perhaps unique amongst the grand civic institutions of the city however, the library must also consider the individual, provide opportunities for solitude and reflection, and acknowledge the scale of the body within an otherwise vast public interior.

PROJECT TYPE: LIBRARY YEAR: 2020 LOCATION: CHINA TOWN, Melbourne, Australia AREA: 400m²

LIBRARY

LIBRARY

DESIGN INTENT Basically, the concept of library is “exploring, which allowing people to search their target-books in the same way like travelling exploration. In this unique fresh-exploring experience, the designer hopes the disappearing in- terest of reading could be re-inspired. The new library changes the way books are traditionally displayed. The new mixture of gallery-like show stand, bookshelves and ramps are combined to guide people's journey of exploration. The library allows light to pass through each space through a series of split-level approaches, giving the library a sense of lightness in the overall space. In order to weaken the library's visual sense of heaviness, all spaces can be illuminated by natural light sources, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. This library is designed to be open for all ages. Children can have fun here wandering through the flowing space. At the same time, the designer also hopes that it can become a place where people are willing to stay in their free time.

The site is bound to the east by Pender Place, and to the west by Corrs Lane. The site is largely vacant, but includes a small building to the Pender Place edge. This building can be demolished at discretion.

THE BOTTOM FACE OF THE WAFFLE STRUCTURE NEEDS TO HAVE SUFFICIENT LARGER AREA THAN THE TOP FACE TO SUPPORT THE OVERALL WAFFLE STRUCTURE. THIS CREATES EQUAL DISTRIBUTION OF WEIGHT ACROSS THE WHOLE STRUCTURE. THE WAFFLE IS DIVIDED ACCORDING TO THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE PANEL SO THAT THE STRUCTURE WILL BE HIDED WHEN VIEWING THE PANELS AND ALSO EASIER TO GLUE THE PANELS TO THE WAFFLE.

THE LASER CUTTING PANELS WERE CREATED BY USING THE UNROLL COMMOND IN RHINO. IN UNROLL SURFACES WERE VERY DISPERSED, SO I WERE TRYING TO LINK THE MAXMUM SURFACES TOGETHER TO GENERATE MINIMUM TABS TO RE-

THE LEFT SURFACE’S PANELS HAS MORE PERFORATIONS WITH SIZES BEING THE SMALLEST AT THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST CORNER AND LARGEST IN THE MIDDLE.

DUCE THE WORK TIME AFTER PRINTTING THEM OUT BY COMPARING THE MARKS IN RHINO MODELS. I USED ETCH FOR THE FOLDING LINES. ACCORDING TO THE THE LASER CUT, THE MACHINE CAN ONLY CUT ONE SIDE, SO I SPEND SOME TIME TO WORK OUT WHICH LINE IS FOLD FORWORD AND WHICH BACKWORK. AFTER THAT, I USED CUT KNIFE TO FIX THE LINES FOR BETTER FOLDING RESULT.

THE INITIAL DESIGN IDEA IS TO CREATE A WATERFALL FEELINGS SO I DESIGN THE HIGHEST SURFACE ON THE TOP WITH HIGHEST PYRAMID AND ON THE LOWEST PART THE SURFACE BE-

people to use and rest.

There are threshold openings on all four sides of module. This provides entrance for circulation.

The reason I choose this result is because this module has very interesting space for using. This module can be considered as a building and also a sculpture. It has walls, thresholds, boundary and also sitting space. People will enjoy the space in this module.

DESIGN MATRIX

LOOKING BACK TO THE THREE MODULE IN THIS SEMESTER I HAVE GAINED AND DEVELOPED NUMEROUS DIGITAL DESIGN TECHNIQUES. IN MODULE 1 I DEVELOP THE SKILL OF RHINOCEROS MODELING SKILL S AND CONSIDERING HOW CIRCUL ATION AND THRESHOLD EFFECT THE DESIGN RESULTS. IN THE SECOND MODULE I START TO KNOW ABOUT PARAMETRIC DESIGN USING RHINOCEROS´GRASSHOPPER PLUGIN. I FOUND MYSELF EXPLORING HOW PARAMETRIC MODELING CAN BE USED TO MANIPULATE GEOMETRIES BASED ON VARIOUS ATTRACTORS. THIS WAS EVIDENT IN MODULE 2 TASK A AND MODULE 3 TASK WHERE I USED ATTRACTOR POINTS AND CURVES TO MANIPULATE SURFACES AND GEOMETRIES AIDING MY DESIGN PROCESS. I HAVE GAINED SO MANY VALUABLE SKILLS FROM THAT WHICH OPENED MANY NEW POSSIBILITIES DUE TO THE RAPID ABILITY TO PROTOTYPE AND ITERATE. THE LAST MODULE INTRODUCED THE UNREAL ENGINES SOFTWARE WHICH WE WERE USING TO PRODUCE VR AND GAVE MORE POSSIBILITIES TO SHOW OUR DESIGN IN THE FUTURE. FOR OVERALL, I IMPROVED THE SKILL OF LINE WEIGHT IN ILLUSTRATOR WHICH BEEN USED TO PRODUCE THE DIAGRAM. AND ALSO THE CONSIDERING TIPS AND ISSUES OF MODEL LASER CUTTING AND 3D PRINTING ARE REALLY IMPORTANT AS WELL AS THE PROJECT TIME MANAGEMENT.
