EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the December issue of M@SK magazine – the UK’s first blogger based beauty magazine.
My initial idea when creating this magazine was the focus less on make-up artists and super models and high-end fashion and look at a simpler version of make-up and beauty. We don’t all have 4 people to make us look like Beyoncé every morning and we certainly don’t have the budget for it either. So if you’re a beauty enthusiast with a realistic budget then we hope you enjoy the first ever copy of M@SK. The past few months have been a whirlwind of excitement in the beauty blogging world, with the Queen of YouTube Zoella releasing her first ever line of beauty products ‘Zoella Beauty’ as well as her first ever novel ‘Girl Online’. We will be delving into the lives of Zoe, as well as her blogging buddies and revealing why it is they have all of a sudden become so popular. We will be enlightening you with how exactly to look after your skin this winter, the top 5 beauty bloggers to keep your eye on in the coming months and an exclusive in-sight into Miranda Kerr’s make-up routine. Enjoy,
Chloe Nebard Editor in Chief of M@SK Magazine

s the days get colder and darker, summer seems like a distant memory and ‘no make-up make-up days’ become few and far between. As skin gets paler it becomes more appropriate to wear those dark, wintery, berry-toned lipsticks we’ve been waiting months to wear and here is the perfect addition for your Autumn/Winter 2014 make-up routine.

Since the launch of Maybelline’s new Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencil earlier this year, there has been a lot of chatter and many a review on the product. They are a very close drug-store dupe to the Nars Matte Lip Pencils and at £4.99 compared to a pricier £18.00, they are definitely a more purse-friendly alternative for those of us with a smaller budget. Lip pencils are a pretty standard go-to product for a lot of people who are often in a rush as the convenient pencil shape makes them so much easier to apply than the chunky bullet of a lipstick. They’re a bit of a two-in one product as they can be used as a lip liner or you can use it all over your lips as a lipstick itself, which makes them a make-up bag essential. The Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencil does pretty much what it says on the tin… or pencil, and as far at matte lip products go, it’s a great value for money product that really performs well in the lipstick stakes. One of the common problems with matte lipsticks is that they can often be drying for your lips and after a while they can create a nasty little crust sexy. But because these pencils are so lightweight they’re really comfortable to wear all day and they have great staying power. Five cups of coffee and a burger is nothing this pencil can’t handle so they really are a lovely winter

The Launch of Zoella Beauty that sent Superdrug into Overdrive Beauty blogging sensation Zoella is sitting pretty as her first range of beauty products sold out within one hour of its release as social media fans rushed to snap them up.
and designed by Zoe Sugg, the creator of Zoella, from the scents of the products down to the bottles they are packaged in. She describes the range as ‘simple, sweet and fragrant treats with uh-mayzingscents and utterly adorable packaging’. Openly suffering from anxiety, she explained why she created the range by saying: ‘When life catches up with us we all need space to dream and indulge, so I have created my own special range of bath & beauty loveliness to help you find your happy place.’
‘I can’t wait till I recieve some of the Zoella Beauty products on Christmas day, I’m counting down!’ The 24 year old has cultivated a small (or actually rather large) army of fans, so it’s no surprise that the heavily anticipated bath and body product line completely sold out. Simone Brewster, a beauty blogger and student from Preston said of Zoella Beauty: ‘I am excited to try the products out but they’re only in selected stores. She’s been a consumer and part of the industry for a while now so she’s able to understand what her audience wants from a product.’ As if a sell-out product range wasn’t enough, Zoe’s also bagged herself a Penguin book deal, two Radio One Teen Awards for ‘Best British vlogger’ and she’s the Digital Ambassador for mental health charity Mind.
Image: Gage Skidmore Beauty blogging sensation Zoella is sitting pretty as her first range of beauty products sold out within one hour of its release as social media fans rushed to snap them up. The range became available to buy online at FeelUnique.com on September 26th and sold out completely within one hour. It was released in selected Superdrug stores three days later and the products have been flying off the shelves ever since. Self-proclaimed enthusiast of all things ‘beauty, fashion and life’ related, Zoella’s YouTube channel has now exceeded 6 million subscriptions and her second channel ‘More Zoella’ also boasts nearly 2.5 million. Both her YouTube channels cover fashion, beauty and lifestyle but they also touch on subjects such as her battles with anxiety and daily vlogs of her day-to-day life. Her realistic and down-to-earth
‘When life catches up with us we all need space to dream and indulge, so Zoella created her own special range of bath & beauty lovliness to help you find your happy place...’ videos make her accessible to pretty much anyone, ranging from make-up tutorials to candid footage of her normal day routine. ‘Zoella Beauty’ is a line of pamper products that were all personally picked
Jenny Hill, a spokesperson for Superdrug said: ‘the Zoella range has been extremely popular with customers and people are even commenting on our Facebook page begging us to restock.’ A Superdrug customer, Nemo3632, wrote this review on their website about the ‘Creamy Madly Dreamy’ body lotion: “Amazing job on this Zoe, I think it’s the perfect product for your skin in the bath or in the shower and the smell is just gorgeous. I just could not resist the smell and it’s only a fiver, which I think is a great price. I can’t wait till I receive this on Christmas day, I’m counting down!” And another, Chloë from London, wrote this about one of the cosmetic bags in her line: “Such a good quality make up case! Quite big and extremely beautiful, I love how the eyes stand out against the mint green and peach background! Keep it up Zoe!” Whilst many beauty bloggers have had beauty products launched in stores, such as Tanya Burr, nothing has been quite as successful as the release of Zoella Beauty.

Zoella, the Proof That YouTube star No One Does outselling JK Pregnancy Style Rowling Quite Like Blake Lively
She began her career on YouTube posting videos about fashion and beauty.
But now Zoe Sugg, known under the alias of Zoella has become the debut author to sell the most books in a week.
The 24-year-old from Wiltshire, sold 78,109 copies of her book Girl Online last week.
The record number is higher than the first books of veteran authors included JK Rowling and Dan Brown, author of the Da Vinci Code.
Very.co.uk.
Crammed with ditsy prints, coloured lace and leopard print, the AW14 collection is aimed at the same teenage and twenty-something market which makes up her fan base.
Tanya, 25, not only has almost a million followers on Twitter, but has had a photoshoot with Mulberry, launched her own cosmetics brand and has six million views on her YouTube channel every single month. Insane.
She told us that her advice to aspiring bloggers is: ‘The most important thing is to make sure you are on social media. Be active online and make sure you are talked about – have fun with it, don’t stress out about statistics too much.’ Her range with Very, which is online now, comes in sizes 8 to 20 and costs £20-£52.
EXCLUSIVE: Mario Testino’s Instagram Tips
The figure is also more than five times higher than the number of copies which were sold of EL James’ Fifty Shades of Grey in its first week. The figure was revealed by Nielsen BookScan which collects data on book sales.
Zoella’s ‘vlogs’, short for video blogs, attract 12 million hits each month. She began posting the videos in 2009 as a ‘creative outlet’. She now has six million followers on YouTube and is read by more than 2.5 million on Twitter. Penguin Random House, the publisher behind Girl Online, agreed to sign Zoella after its CEO Tom Weldon was told by his 13-year-old goddaughter that the book would be ‘a huge best-seller’. Blake Lively's already faultless pregnancy style just got even better. The actress, creator of lifestyle website Preserve and all-round wonder woman rocked up at L'Oreal's Annual Women Of Worth Celebration looking incred.
Historically, dressing a baby bump on the red carpet has proved tricky for some, with many opting to conceal their blossoming tums under metres of fabric, with varying degrees of success.
Not Blake, though. The 27-year-old is clearly revelling in her first pregnancy and graced the red carpet in New York wearing a clinging, backless, oh-so-sexy black gown with bump on full display.
Worth a mention, as well, was her hair. Tousled and gorgeous, of course, but we couldn't help but notice her roots. Whoever knew this golden girl was so naturally dark? Whether this is a new trend the star is trying on for size, or she's stopped dying her hair due to her pregnancy we don't know, but she looked great either way. How could she not? The L'Oreal's Annual Women Of Worth Celebration acknowledges 10 women who are all making a difference in the world with the winner taking home $25,000. On the night, Blake accompanied Brittany Wenger, who, at 15, created a tool to diagnose breast cancer,
Miss Sugg was also an unlikely addition to Band Aid 30 where she joined Bob Geldof and One Direction for the charity single. She also featured in the November issue of Vogue.
Of the record-breaking achievement, Miss Sugg said: ‘It’s such an amazing feeling. I’m so grateful to everyone who has bought a copy of Girl Online. I love that so many of my viewers are enjoying the book! This year has been so exciting and this for sure is the icing on the cake.'
Blogger Tanya Burr releases her first fashion collection with Very.co.uk If ever you needed proof that the online blogger community is thriving in a way which no-one ever expected, it’s this.

For the ultimate insider look at the most exclusive parties, shoots and stars, Mario Testino is the man to follow on Instagram. But the account of one of the world’s most iconic and legendary photographers isn’t all about the stars in front of the camera – although we do love his personal shots of Angelina Jolie, and the on-going black and white towel series - it’s Testino’s ability to take a brilliant snap with just his phone camera that really deserves a follow.
So how does he suggest we achieve such beautiful snaps? Put simply, the key is to edit. Speaking exclusively to M@SK, Testino explained: ‘Since I have been on Instagram one is bombarded by images and it forces you to really assess what is good and what is not. My tips would be to edit and really look and question what is a good picture or not. I love Instagram, it's almost like my own magazine, in a way. It's great too to have that immediate engagement with people – the world is moving at such a fast pace and I can take a picture and post it immediately and get instant feedback. I have seen many developments in the industry, from the days when we photographed on film not knowing what the picture would be like until we got the contact sheet back from the lab a week later.’

From Rags to Riches and Rimmel to Chanel... Zoe Sugg puts on the kettle and sits down to her place of work – her bedroom, in her work attire – her pajamas. She logs on to her YouTube account and gets notified that she has hit 6 million subscribers, more than the population of Denmark. Soon after this, she gets a delivery of a large golden YouTube plaque to commemorate this milestone, similar to the platinum record that pop starts get when they sell a million albums. Blogging used to be considered a hobby, but since the rise of social media and the increased popularity of blogging people now actually earn a living by updating their blogs and social media pages, and a pretty good living at that. What started off as a bedroom hobby is now a multi-million pound business, with some bloggers earning up to 6 figure salaries through social media platforms that allow them to project their daily lives to tens of thousands, even millions of eager followers. Simone Brewster, an up and coming beauty blogger from Preston first began watching YouTube videos 8 years ago in the early days of the emergence of beauty blogging. She discovered the community when searching for makeup on the Internet, at the time not many people looked to YouTube for this purpose, finding a niche in the market for people to review and try out products so you don't have to. The names Alfie Deyes, Tanya Burr and Zoe Sugg might not ring any bells, but any avid YouTube users will know exactly who they are. These so called ‘YouTubers’ now consider uploading videos, something that was once just a hobby, their full time jobs. They earn money from making and uploading videos and updating their blogs and social media and have cultivated tens of millions of fans between them, wreaking havoc wherever they go. Think early One Direction with slightly less psychotic fans – that sort of thing. With product launches, book deals, This Morning and Loose Women appearances, it is no doubt that YouTube has created a new breed
of celebrity. However they are much more down to earth; normal and realistic role models for young people than the likes of Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus whose antics are more than questionable. Rather than run around in super cars, drinking, smoking, posting weird selfies and generally being pests; Alfie, Tanya, Zoe and their blogging buddies, despite their new found fame and fortune, would rather carve pumpkins, play the Sims and go for a walk on Brighton Pier.
One questiion that resonates when discussing these post-teen online marvels, is how has this happened? What once was a hobby has now turned into a real-life ‘rags to riches’ fairy tale – they’ve been able to quit their jobs and make more money than ever before by doing what they love to do. Tanya Burr, who originally trained as a make-up artist and previously worked on a make-up counter in a department store in Norwich, created her YouTube channel in 2009 where she uploaded make-up tutorials on how to replicate celebrity looks. 5 years later she has exceeded
in magazines such as Grazia, Company and Sylist for her fashion and beauty and expertise and is often pictured in tabloids like the Daily Mail and even the BBC. Alfie Deyes also created his YouTube channel ‘Pointless Blog’ in 2009 and even dropped out of university to manage his now 3 million
‘Alfie gives me something to look forward to at the end of the day. He makes me feel important and I don’t know what I’d do without him.’ subscribers and continue his career as a blogger and vlogger. In September 2014 Alfie released an activities book ‘The Pointless Book’, which is anything but pointless. It cleverly links the activities for the reader to complete with his channel, giving the book a completely fresh and original twist that allows his fans to feel closer to him than ever before. His book tour caused wide spread hysteria as 7,000 people turned up to his first book signing, paving the streets of London with excited and emotional teenage girls, welp, scarier than an EDL protest march some might say. A fan of Alfie, Bethany Gregson (@pointlesstbf) says that following Alfie always gives
‘5 years ago I was working on a make-up counter... Now I have my own cosmetics brand.’ 2 million subscribers and has her very own cosmetics brand Tanya Burr Cosmetics’.
Her YouTube career has allowed her to attend multiple celebrity-studded events such as London Fashion Week, film previews and award shows and she even did a photo shoot with her boyfriend (also a vlogger) Jim Chapman for Mulberry. Tanya is frequently featured
her something to look forward to at the end of the day and that changes her mood instantly. She says that Deyes makes her feel important and she doesn’t know what she’d do without him; he never fails to make her smile. Can you see the One Direction thing yet? One of the most famous of the bunch is 24year-old Zoe Sugg, the creator of ‘Zoella’, and
put yourself out there it’s there forever and people can make a judgment. Handling negative comments and ‘haters’ is something that celebrities have to deal with every single day and social media makes it so much easier for them to receive negative comments. For people such as Zoe, Alfie and Tanya who’s fame has escalated so quickly and in a small period of time, handling negativity and scrutiny from the public is surely a lot more difficult.
with an astonishing 6 million subscribers, her YouTube channel is ranked as the 68th most subscribed on the website. She has nearly 2.5 million twitter followers and she even has her own advert. Yep, an advert. In an even bigger twist to the fairy tale that is her life, she also took part in the
‘I have 6 million subscribers, more than the population of Denmark.’
It isn’t clear just how much money can be made from having a YouTube channel, but it must be a pretty penny as Tanya and her boyfriend Jim have an apartment in central London, an Audi and still enough money left over to fund Tanya’s shopping sprees. Zoe and Alfie, or ‘Zalfie’ as they are also referred to, have just moved into a sparkly new house somewhere in Brighton and do their weekly shop in Waitrose, how very rock and roll. So they must be earning a fortune from their social media empires considering they have no other form of income.
most recent Band Aid track with some of the most famous musicians in the world.
‘But why?’ I hear you scream, why does this normal girl from the unsuspecting county of Wiltshire have the population of a small country following her every move? Even she can’t quite answer that. Maybe it’s luck or good timing, maybe it’s because she’s the epitome of ‘perfect’ the girl or maybe it’s because she works her socks off to try and give girls (and boys) some helpful advice through her YouTube channel. Whether that’s make-up, fashion, skin care or even life advice, this pintsized blogger has accumulated millions of young fans through blog posts and YouTube videos.
Zoe first set up her blog five years ago and then expanded it into a YouTube channel a few months later where she discusses fashion, beauty and lifestyle as well as self-help videos with tips for people who suffer with social anxiety. Like Tanya, Zoe has also attended her fair share of celebrity infused parties, but she has also made appearances on This Morning and Loose Women to discuss her YouTube channel and blog and the craze that surrounds her. It seems as though she can’t leave the house anymore without being spotted by a viewer and pelted with the question ‘can I we take a selfie?’ Simone explains that it isn’t always as amazing as it seems being a blogger and vlogger. She says it's good they're finding a voice but this puts them under a lot more scrutiny, recently Zoe was slated for her anxiety and a whole article was written about it on a newspaper's website. With good press comes the negative and they aren't media trained for things like this and it can end up causing undue stress, for something that initially was just a hobby. That is one of the issues with putting this much of your life online, as soon as you
What is it that has made these people so incredibly popular over the last few years? Is it just that we have become nosey from watching too much reality TV? Possibly. But one thing is for sure - watching vlogs on YouTube is a lot more entertaining than watching the shrill, potty-mouthed Geordie Shore cast run-a-muck around Newcastle. There is something addictive about watching these vlogs and you get a twinge of excitement knowing there’s a new one waiting for you to
‘With good press comes negative press - they aren’t media trained for that.’ watch at home at the end of the day.
Are these people ‘living the dream’? Doing what they love to do and getting paid for it? It would appear so; travelling around the world to meet their viewers, getting laden with gifts here there and everywhere, they even did a short tour recently around the UK. These normal people have quickly become YouTube pop stars but without the cheesy dance moves, and all without leaving the comfort of their own bedrooms.
The Products you Need to Look After your Skin this Winter
Changing up your skin care routine for the colder months can be tough; you know what you like to use and you know what your skin agrees with. Then all of a sudden you’re thrown into a vortex of creams and syrums and moisturisers that you’ve never heard of, but our skin care gurur has you covered.
L
ooking after your skin can feel a bit like a balancing act, especially in winter when the seemingly arctic temperatures and gale force winds wreak havoc on your poor face. Your skin was once moisturized and glowing and now it’s dry, flakey and unhappy. The temperature outside plummets and the heating is cranked to the highest level which strips oil and moisture from your skin. To help with those winter skin blues, here are a few of our skin care guru’s top picks and handy tricks for looking after your skin.

Liz Ea
anser
h Cle t Clot
This cleaner is an absolute must for the winter months, with rosemary, chamomile, cocoa butter and eucalyptus oil it is extremely nourishing and helps to break down all the make-up and dirt you collect on your skin and in your pores all day.
Rub the cleanser onto dry skin and rub around your face, concentrating on your t-zone, nose and chin (where all the horrid stuff usually likes to collect) and then remove it with a muslin cloth and hot water. The hot water opens up your pores and allows to product to give your face a really deep but gentle cleanse.
This product is so creamy and it feels like such a treat for your face, if you suffer with dry skin in the winter then this will do absolute wonders. Using a muslin cloth to remove the cleanser really polishes your face and those little areas of dryness will be banished forever more. Or at least until tomorrow.
Liz Earle
Gentle Ex
foliator
We love a bit of Liz Earle in the winter months because the products are so blooming nourishing. This exfoliator has eucalyptus, cocoa butter and tiny little jojoba beads to get rid of dead skin cells and general nastiness.
Cocoa butter is one of the best ingredients for moisturizing and nourishing your skin and because winter is the biggest nemesis for moisturized skin and those horribly bitter days can be very drying. Using more moisturizing products will help no end to give you back the juicy face you had way back when in summer, so sometimes more is more with this sort of thing.
LUSH Ma
sk of Mag
naminty
For those of us who really struggle to get on top of those pesky blemishes, no matter what time of year, this mask is a gift sent from above by the skincare Gods. Masks are an amazing way to tackle problem skin because they only need to be applied once or twice a week to do the trick, so it’s not something you have to worry about doing every day. Because masks are so dense with ingredients using them too often might have the opposite affect. If you have a sensitive skin, applying a mask once a week is probably best. As the name would suggest, ‘Magnaminty’ is filled with peppermint, which fights breakouts and calms down the ones you already have. The product itself contains lots of little beads so that really helps with cleansing and exfoliating, your skin feels just like a baby’s derriere after use.
Using this once a week will help to keep your skin in amazing condition, which is perfect for this time of year (party season, duh). That bloke from your office you keep flirting with won’t be able to resist your minty face.
LUSH This is another Oatifix mask from Lush, because, well that’s exactly what they are. They’re lush. It’s made from completely natural ingredients so it needs to be stored in the fridge and goes off after a few weeks, but that’s okay because you’ll love it so much there won’t be any left by then anyway. It is very much an all rounder; it cleanses, moisturizes and softens skin and is especially good for people who suffer with sensitivity. Made with bananas, vanilla and oats to cool and nourish, it really is a bit difficult not to have a little taste, but don’t do that please. It contains illipe butter to reduce redness, ground almonds to gently polish and kaolin to cleanse. It sounds delicious and it smells like Christmas too so what more could you really want? All hail Lush and they’re lushness.
Keeping your showers to a minimum will also help your skin in the winter months. Long hot showers, no matter how blissful and comforting they seem on a cold and dark winter’s morning, strip your skin of it’s natural moisture. Shorter, cooler showers will help preserve those natural oils… and also your gas bill, so it’s a win-win situation really.
Everyone wants to look like they’ve just stepped off a catwalk, so if you find it hard to change up your skin care routine in order to accommodate for the effects that winter can have on your skin, then take our advice and you will notice brighter, clearer and more moisturized skin in no time. The only problem will be that whilst bracing yourself for the horrendously low temperatures outside your nice toasty house, you’ll want to frolic around a beach in the Mediterranean. Life is hard.
Upcoming Events Chrsitmas beauty events that you just won’t want to miss... The infamous Liberty of London is hosting a series of beauty events over the next coming weeks in their beauty hall.
You will be able to go to their store and be pampered by Sisley, Ren, Aromatherapy Associates, Eve Lom, Aveda, Kiehl’s and countless other coveted brands to get your skin looking tip-top for the festive season. Some of the treatments are only available on specific days and for limited times so pop over to their website to avoid disappointment. If you needed another excuse to visit Liberty this season (as if) with its unbeatable Christmas display – here’s another. liberty.co.uk

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me...
There is something undeniably appealing about an advent calendar filled with chocolate, but isn't one filled with Chanel treats more wonderful still? And we're not talking a regularsized calendar filled with miniature products (see Liberty, Jo Malone and Benefit for theirs) - instead Chanel's is a supersized installation at the Covent Garden beauty boutique with a new box opening each day to unveil a beauty activity or gift.
Whether you're treated to a Chanel make-up bag, a complimentary makeover, a fragrance masterclass or a bespoke handpainted gift card, the advent calendar will offer a host of treats exclusive to the boutique. Of course you can pick up some Christmas presents while you're there - the limited-edition Christmas compact is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser - but is there any harm is treating yourself to a little Christmas cheer?
Product of the Month
You’ve probably got an app or three that can broadcast a photo of your breakfast, and another few that can help you find a date (hey, no judgment here). But what about one that gives you better skin? Get ready for SkinBetter - it's right there in the name. SkinBetter is a smart new tool that analyzes your skin, even giving you a close look at what’s looming under the surface. (And yes, that can be creepy, but in that I-need-to-know-more kind of way.) It offers product recommendations for you and only you—on the fly. M@SK partnered with the geniuses at SkinBetter, so yeah, it’s safe to say we like it.
Here’s how it works: Take a selfie of your face, fill out a quick questionnaire, and SkinBetter's medical-imagery software identifies your wrinkles, dark spots, and dry areas -and even predicts future problems. Then, a fancy algorithm takes all that data and gives you a skin grade (we promise it’s not horrible; the doctors grade on a curve). From there, you get a shopping list of products that have been vetted by top dermatologists and plastic surgeons. No more wandering the beauty aisles asking, “Will this really work? Do I even want pumpkin extract on my face?"dients for your skin type. Just don’t blame us if you lose your entire afternoon flipping through all the ways you can get rid of crow’s-feet.
