BOOST™ is a cushioning technology created by adidas which provides increased energy return. The foundation of the BOOST™ innovation is centred on its cushioning material. Based on a development process created by adidas partner BASF, a chemical company, solid granular material (TPU) is blown up and turned into thousands of small energy capsules which make up the footwear’s distinctive midsole. With their unique cell structure, these capsules store and unleash energy more efficiently in every stride. Tests conducted by the adidas Innovation Team show that the highly durable material found in Energy Boost products provides the highest energy return in the running industry.

The full length of the shoe features adidas’ signature Boost technology, while the upper is made of stretch mesh and vintage suede. The gum rubber outsole is a nod to the oldschool style that influenced the design of the shoe. The iconic three stripes of adidas are printed with a serrated edge, making these shoes stand out from more classic adidas styles.

The shoes are sold in three different styles, low, mid and high. The mid comes with a connected strap. The high-top Air Force 1s come with a velcro-securable strap; the mid-top strap is secured to the shoe while the high-top’s strap is movable and removable on some versions. Although the shoe comes in different colors and color schemes, the most common Air Force 1s sold are solid white (also referred to as “white on white”), the second most common being solid black (“black on black”).6

The shoes consist of a stitched upper portion, a toe cap usually made of white rubber, and a sole that is usually made of brown rubber. Although Chuck Taylors are made of various materials such as leather, the original and most widely known version of the shoe is made from cotton canvas. The innovative detail of the original shoe was the “loose lining of soft canvas. This was intended to move along with sweaty gym socks and prevent blisters.

An important part of sneakerhead culture is the display of shoes. One reason for this is it is an opportunity to show off one’s collection and highlight the more exclusive or rare shoes that one owns. Additionally, having an organized display allows sneakerheads, who potentially have many pairs of shoes, to keep their shoes clean, out of the way and arranged in an orderly fashion.
