Polarity Paradox Beauty Extreme vs Natural
Beauty is being pushed to extremes with cosmetic brands such as Illamasqua and MAC branching out to include more vibrant colours within their product ranges. From bursting sun oranges to clear water blue, more consumers are beginning to experiment with colour and produce more extravagant makeup. Illamasqua’s Alex Box is helping drive the trend by creating daring makeup looks that could also feature in the theatre as costume makeup. High-end fashion houses are embracing more extravagant beauty regimes in their shows to highlight the inspiration for their collections. Nazir Mazhar for example in his S/S 2015 Ready to Wear used cosmetics to emphasise the extra-terrestrial theme to his work. However, the new vibrant colours that are present within cosmetic products are naturally occurring and are present in every day life. On the other end of the spectrum, the “natural look is becoming increasingly popular: with the less is more idea. This trend is spreading through
hair and beauty with more people embracing their appearance and knowing they look beautiful with or without beauty products. Colours are muted within the natural trend, and consumers are buying into raw and organic beauty companies. Natural processes such as ageing are becoming more accepted as a beautiful thing, and lines and biological processes are being admired and revered. Beauty is on a spectrum ranging between the extremes, and more people are investing in the beauty industry and engaging with each end of the field. Society is accepting more different trends, and as these trends continue to grow, the range will only expand as time goes on.
