WELCOME At an awards event we held some years back, Alastair Campbell hosted and opened with some remarks about how disparaging politicians can be about business awards. Needless to say, our hearts sank and we expected some damning phrases. So, you can imagine our delight when Mr Campbell gave us the sound bite to die for with these words: “When I left politics I discovered that business awards are antidotes to mediocrity.” He is absolutely right, because in every year that we have run the Care Home Awards you – the entrants – have pushed the bar higher and way above the level of mediocrity. The judges - who deserve our thanks for so diligently scrutinising entries and awarding their marks - have remarked that the standard of entries for 2019 is the best yet. So a big thank you is owed to all of you who entered the Care Home Awards with such enthusiasm and high standards. Thanks must also go to headline sponsor, Legal & General and to category sponsors Care Show, Care Sourcer, Fred Theatre, and PJ Care and to the supporters, Care England, IHCP in Northern Ireland, My Home Life and Many Happy Returns. Without their support the Care Home Awards would be pale shadows of their current form. The last big thank you must go to the team at Care Home Management who have been so supportive as our Media partners for three years. We hope you enjoy reading about the Winners and High Commendations and take note of who the other high-scoring Finalists were. They all deserve your applause. The Call for Entries opens again on October 1, 2019 and we look forward to seeing you dispense more antidotes to mediocrity for the 2020 Care Home Awards.

BEST FACILITIES MANAGEMENT OR MAINTENANCE TEAM WINNER

HIGH COMMENDATION

Cornerstone Healthcare Group

Amberley Lodge

Maintenance Manager, Andy Foster, noticed seizure monitors were continually being broken. Replacing the units took time and considerable cost. His trial of alternative “wristwatch” systems has so far saved over £1500 and has the potential to save over £15,000 per annum. Constantly looking to improve processes, Andy and his team sought replacements for existing mattresses to decrease fire risk and realised that the right mattress could also assist the care-staff with their work. As a result, between Andy and the QI Team they have reduced pressure sores to 1.8% – well below the national average of 23%.

Harry Sharrard joined Amberley Lodge as Maintenance Manager in May 2018 and has overseen major facilities projects and made improvements to the home environment, always with a smile. Harry also finds thoughtful ways to help make residents’ daily lives special – such as the Christmas joy he brought to the entire home by building a Santa’s grotto.

BEST TRAINING, RECRUITMENT OR RETENTION INITIATIVE WINNER

HIGH COMMENDATION

Tanglewood Care Homes

Encore Care Homes

This year, Tanglewood continued to shift its culture away from task-based care to emotioncentered care. As part of that transition the focus is heavily on residents. Employee apathy is the biggest operational risk to any care home community. Tanglewood has worked tirelessly to give team members greater meaning in their careers with training focusing on why they do things the way they do.

Face-to-face leadership training is a priority to ensure staff and residents receive the care and support they deserve. Staff working with residents are often overlooked as leaders and Encore’s “Be An Effective Leader” programme provides the understanding, skills, knowledge and integrity needed to lead a team in a challenging sector.

26

BEST PROFESSIONAL, BUSINESS OR CREATIVE SERVICE WINNER

HIGH COMMENDATION

PJ Care Specialist Neuro Care Centres

PLMR

PJ Care recognised that for their specialist service, caring for residents with very complex presentations, the level of HAI’s would be significantly greater than in a traditional care or nursing home and that for any adult safeguarding board to objectively consider reported incidents, they would require a detailed knowledge of the service and have the necessary professionalisms among board members. PJ Care’s innovative approach employs a full time multi-disciplinary team that provides the necessary skill set and experience to properly and professionally work as a board. It bridges a gap in the market for a specialist service such PJ Care, because it has the necessary skill set to properly review any incident; a skill set lacking in adult safeguarding teams across the UK. The biggest benefit however, remains the ability to quickly assess any situation, take any lessons learnt and with almost immediate effect, tweak care delivery if necessary, which serves the ultimate desire of continually improving the care provided for residents.

PLMR is an ambitious and innovative full-service communications consultancy and supports over 800 care homes nationally with a wide range of services, from increasing brand awareness and online presence, through to PR and marketing campaigns, or delivering award-winning reputation management support when the going gets tough.
