BUSINESS IN THE SPOTLIGHT BUSINESS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
BBased in Cheshire, UK, Champ and Zara is a small, family owned business created by Megan Breakwell and Ryan Crump. Both are passionate about helping horses naturally, and enriching their lives in any way they can.
Their business is named after their two horses, Champ and Zara, a Welsh Section D and Irish Sports Horse. Both Champ and Zara came from less than ideal previous homes, which has resulted in numerous health problems, including Sweet Itch and ulcers. Tackling these naturally, alongside veterinary support when required, provided the foundations and inspiration for Megan & Ryan’s business.

“What made you decide to make the Mane and Tail Oil? “
When Champ first arrived with us, he was covered in sores created by standing in other horses waste for months on end. He was also entirely bald underneath his stomach, and horribly infected with lice. After treating him for these various issues, his hair began to grow back, although his skin was still incredibly sensitive. That summer he developed sweet itch. He began to lose clumps of his mane and tail, and the new hair that had grown around his neck began to fall out.
After looking at the products on the market, we were shocked to discover that many were full of harsh synthetics and chemicals which were not appropriate for most horses, but certainly not for Champ’s incredibly sensitive skin. We wanted something that detangled, soothed itchiness, promoted hair regrowth and deep conditioned. Soon after, we developed our first productour Mane and Tail Oil, and we haven’t looked back!
“What is it your Mane and Tail Oil made of? “
It is made of 100% natural, human grade ingredients. Our specialist peppermint and rosemary essential oil blend has been added to a sweet almond oil mix which is perfect for those with sensitive skin, or for people that want quality, natural ingredients for their horse or pony.
“Do you have any advice for people using the Mane and Tail Oil to deal with sweet itch or other skin problems?”
We advise applying our Mane and Tail Oil to the roots of the mane and tail to ensure maximum contact with the new hair follicles. If you have two minutes to gently massage it in, you will see even better results.
Despite what the name suggests, our Mane and Tail Oil can also be used across the coat, and is incredibly popular with feathered horses due to its antiinflammatory and anti-fungal properties, and its fantastic ability to help keep the mud at bay.

For horses suffering with persistent itchiness or scurf, a small amount of the oil applied to the affected coat and left overnight works wonders. The next day, simply brush away the residual dead skin for a noticeably improved appearance and a happier horse or pony.
“What results do you see, and how quickly do you see them?”
Our Mane and Tail Oil is designed to promote hair regrowth, improve general condition and soothe itchiness. When applying to bald spots, new hair generally begins to regrow within a couple of weeks. The oil will combat itchiness while bringing any dried or dead skin to the surface. Our product also adds immediate shine while improving condition.
“What other products do you do?”
We do a range of other products including our Hoof Oil, which has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and is great for dry and cracked hooves. We also have a fantastic supplement for horses prone to laminitis and ulcers, and our ever popular snuffle mats, which are perfect enrichment and entertainment for horses and dogs alike.

“Do you have any plans for future products?”

We have lots of other exciting products for the future, including our 100% natural pet sunscreen, which will be released this week.
