In this issue I will cover my very first show, and of course write about finishing the engine rebuild! I can’t leave you on a cliff-hanger much longer so I will type through it.

Firstly, the rebuild. Daddy’s hand was too big to fit down the bore, so I had to oil the cylinder walls. It felt so gloopy and weird. I proceeded to oil the rings, piston and piston ring compressor. We adjusted the piston ring compressor to fit the piston and then I tapped it down with the wooden handle of a hammer. While I lined up the piston to fit the crank shaft Daddy held the crank for me. Then Daddy and I set up the valve timing together. We stripped the governor and turned the pins to give a good surface for the mushroom pin. We put in the

The engine is starting to come together nicely and looks shiny.

Before the head went on, Daddy showed me how to find top dead centre – that was interesting. Daddy used a polishing wheel to shine up the brass head nuts. We tightened the head down and fitted the rockers to the push rods, and then set the tappet gap using a feeler gauge. Next, we bolted down the magneto and set the spark plug timing.

It was nearly 6pm, and time to go home, but we couldn’t leave it there. The carb hadn’t been rebuilt, so Daddy sprayed a small squirt of brake cleaner into the inlet port, swung the starting handle and the engine barked a couple of times. “Well, we can’t go home now!” said Dad. We stayed until we had the carb rebuilt and fitted it to the engine. Another test run – Daddy put petrol in the float bowl, turned the handle and off my engine went!! We went home happy but exhausted at 9.30pm.

On the next visit we added the fuel tank, exhaust, governor rods, the hopper cover, rocker cover and transfers. My engine is complete! It was put back onto the old trolley for now and it’s ready for its first show.

OH YEAH!!
