erhaps you know us already for our Chincoteague ponies, which are world-famous now. There are relatively few wild ponies left in North America, and many of them can be found here. Every July we swim them across a channel and into town for a local benefit auction. It’s just our little quaint 92-year-old tradition that somehow, without our really trying, the world has found out about. That’s the way things are around here. We just do what we’ve always done, and invite folks to stop by and enjoy it all with us. We hope you’ll have a chance to do the same real soon.

hen you do, if you’re like most folks you’ll find yourself creating your own Chincoteague. For some our island is a fun-filled family recreation zone of non-stop sport fishing, nature cruises, sunbathing, mini golf, kayaking and ice cream parlors. For others, we’re a quaint town of charming shops, bed and breakfast inns, intriguing museums and fine restaurants. For still others, Chincoteague is an endlessly fascinating nature preserve, offering miles of unspoiled Atlantic coastline, thousands of acres of wetlands habitat for unusual wildflowers, rare species like the bald eagle and Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel.

Natural Attractions Our Beach: Pure and Natural. A ssateague Island is such an impressive natural treasure, it serves

as the site of both the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Island National Seashore. The National Seashore remains a wide, pristine Atlantic Coast beach with nary a building in sight. It’s one of the few spots on the Atlantic Coast which has been preserved in its natural undeveloped state; even the parking lot is surfaced with clamshells!

Surf fishing, swimming, and sunbathing are the traditional

family beach activities enjoyed here throughout the warm weather months. At times, dolphin pods frolic just beyond the surf. Mole and horseshoe crabs are a few of the island’s beach dwellers.

Over Sand Vehicle Use (OSV) and Horseback Riding

The OSV zone at Assateague Island National Seashore in Virginia contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by National Park Service. Permits may be purchased at the Toms Cove Visitor Center or the Herbert H. Bateman Educational Center. Please note: summer closures are in effect mid-March through late August due to nesting of endangered piping plovers. Horseback riding is also permitted in the OSV zone when it is open. Natural Attractions Here, it isn’t just the animals who take refuge. The opportunities to reconnect with nature are truly endless. The

14,000 acre Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge with unspoiled beachfront, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest serves as a stopover on the Atlantic Flyway for over 300 species of migratory birds who reside here at least part of the year. Other wildlife, some endangered or threatened species, also call the island home- including the legendary Chincoteague Ponies. The Herbert H. Bateman Educational & Administrative Center lies at the heart of our wildlife education programs. From here, venture out to investigate the wild, wonderful side of nature guided by US Fish & Wildlife Service staff.

How did the ponies get there? One legend has it that they swam ashore from shipwrecked Spanish Galleons such as

the La Galga that ran ashore on Assateague Island in 1750 with Spanish Mustangs aboard. Others believe their origins date back to the 17th century, when local farmers used Assateague Island as a natural corral for their animals. Whatever their origins, the wild ponies are very well adapted to their natural environment. The current herds are owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and are allowed to graze on Assateague Island by a special permit from the US Fish & Wildlife Service. (See pages 26-27 for more information on the wild Chincoteague Ponies.)

Be sure to visit the 142-foot high Assateague Lighthouse while you are here and climb it if you dare, in season–175 steps to the top!

The space enthusiast in your family will thrill to the adventure History, heritage and a natural of an astronaut’s life at the NASA Visitors Center, which is just across Route 175 from the oldest rocket launch range in the U.S.world of wonder. the NASA Wallops Flight Facility. Its full-scale rockets, videos, and hands-on activities will immerse you in NASA’s past, Because we’re proud of our Shore’s history and heritage, we offer displays current and future research. The Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport several museums on and off the islands to quench your curiosity about our way of life. The Museum of Chincoteague Island is a great place to immerseyourselfinChincoteague’s400-yearmaritimehistory,including our 1865 Fresnel Lens from the Assateague Lighthouse. The Captain Timothy Hill House, the oldest known home on Chincoteague Island, is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and The National Register of Historic Places. Chincoteague’s own take on Hollywood’s walk of stars, the restored Island Theatre, where “Misty of Chincoteague� premiered, has Misty’s hoof prints cemented at the movie house entrance. Just a few short miles South on Route 13 are the Eastern Shore Railway Museum in Parksley, VA which offers a wonderful step back in time to see the history of the rail system and the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society in Onancock, VA whose headquarters is located in “the finest and most elaborate Federal mansion on Virginia’s Eastern Shore,� as described by the Virginia Historical Landmarks Commission. Head North on Route 13 and discover the Delmarva Discovery Center & Museum in Pocomoke City, MD. This is a living museum that takes visitors on a timeless journey through Delmarva and the Cypress Swamp. Be sure to stop in and see their new otter exhibit, and say hello to Mac & Tuck.

crabbing, picnicking and other recreational opportunities. Robert N. Reed Downtown Waterfront Park (4083 Main Street) located in the heart of downtown on the Chincoteague Channel offers a new fishing pier and a pavilion that serves as a venue for outdoor activities. Chincoteague Veterans Memorial Park (7427 Memorial Park Drive) on Eastside Road is located on the Assateague Channel and provides playground equipment, tennis courts, basketball courts, a pier, and pavilion. Leonard Park across from Chincoteague Combined School (4586 Main Street) is pet friendly, offers picnic tables for dining by the bay, and kayak access.

Island Nature Trail is located on Hallie Whealton Smith Drive. The south 0.7 mile paved trail is pet friendly and provides opportunity to walk, bike, run or bird watch. To the north is a natural surface trail that extends 0.45 miles through pine forest and glade.

PONY SWIM & AUCTION EVENT DATES -Monday, July 24: Come see the famous "Beach Walk" on Assateague Island when the ponies make their way from the north corral to the south corral via "The Beach." Be there by 6am. -Wednesday, July 26: 7:00 am-1:00 pm (Approx.): Ponies swim at Assateague Channel at Chincoteague Memorial Park on the East side of the island. No charge by Fire Co. for parking or seeing ponies swim but there is NO PARKING at Memorial Park. Please see shuttle info at left. At “slack tide” on the last Wednesday before the last Thursday of every July, Chincoteague’s “Saltwater Cowboys” herd about 200 ponies across Assateague Channel, to move them from Assateague Island to neighboring Chincoteague Island.

happening going on here. As you might expect, most are celebrations of the natural surroundings that bless our lives all 12 months of the year. But standing above all of the other festivals and events is Chincoteague’s world-renowned Pony Penning and Carnival, held the last week of every July. Pony Penning week, as it’s called around here, has become a magnet for horse-lovers—and just the plain curious—from around the world. It isn’t every day that one can witness a wild herd of ponies rounded up, swum across a narrow channel, herded through the quaint, narrow streets of an island town, and auctioned to the highest bidder.

How did this get started? How long has this been

After the swim, the ponies are rested and then walked south on Ridge Road, west on Beebe Road and then north on Main Street to the carnival grounds. Anywhere along this route is a great place to see the ponies if you can't make the swim. The auction takes place the next day. Auction prices have recently averaged $2,658 per foal. Chincoteague ponies have become so popular as saddle and show horses that there are now Chincoteague Pony breeding farms as far away as Australia.

going on, and why? Well, the story begins with fire. Two fires, to be exact, which occurred at opposite sides of town in 1920 and 1924. These destructive fires burned out of control for lack of effective firefighting equipment, and Chincoteaguers were determined to not let it happen again. So a small group of men organized themselves as the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. So far, so good, but how were they going to pay for the new firefighting equipment they needed? Someone suggested auctioning the wild ponies that grazed on adjoining Assateague Island, and what they called “Pony Penning Day” was born, in July, 1925. This was the first time the ponies could be seen swimming across the channel to Chincoteague, a spectacle that especially delighted the 15,000 visitors who attended the first Chincoteague Pony Penning.

ince then, the firemen who round up the ponies have become known as Saltwater Cowboys and they’re legendary figures around here. While some are native Chincoteaguers, other cowboys return every year from near and far to help us with Pony Penning. Well, it was clear from the extraordinary success of the first Penning Day that this was destined to become a cherished annual tradition. And so it has been to this day. Oh, and by the way, the Chincoteague Firemen got their equipment after that first Penning: a 750- gallon American La France pumper with 2000 feet of hose. And there has never been a catastrophic fire on Chincoteague since.
