THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, often called UNC, or “Carolina,” was chartered in 1789. The cornerstone to the nation’s first state university building, Old East, was laid on October 12, 1793. UNC opened its doors for students in 1795 making it the only public university in the U.S. that awarded degrees to students in the 18th century.
