FOR SENIORS IS GOOD FOR BOTH BODY AND SOUL
DANCE FOR YOUR BODY
Dancing isn't just for the young. Seniors can benefit in many ways from putting on their dancing shoes and getting out there on the floor. Dance is not only fun, it improves physical and mental health - as well as preventing or delaying many of the common symptoms of aging.
Staying active is important as we age, and dancing is a great way to keep your body moving. The exercise you get from dancing is good for your body in several ways:
. Weight maintenance. Along with a balanced diet, exercise is important in losing or maintaining weight. Dancing is a fun way to get the exercise you need to prevent and improve obesity-related problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems.
. Bone health. Bone is a living tissue, and inactivity sends a signal to your bones that they don't need to maintain their density. Studies have shown that people who participate in weight bearing exercises such as dancing are far less likely to develop osteoporosis.
. Joint health. If you are like most people, you have put quite a bit of wear and tear on your joints in your lifetime. All of that abuse catches up with us as we age, and even normal joints deteriorate over time. Arthritis and joint stiffness are common complaints in seniors, and dancing is an excellent way to treat both. Dancing is easy to adapt to your ability - from easy line dances and ballet stretches to more energetic aerobic and ballroom dances - and will help with mobility by preventing or improving pain and stiffness.
. Dexterity. As we age, our agility declines. Even if you have never considered yourself particularly graceful, learning the fluid moves of a new dance can help develop and maintain both dexterity and balance.
make new friends, or even meet new romantic partner.
. Mental agility. Doctors recommend engaging in mental activities such as crossword puzzles or learning something new to maintain mental agility as we age. Learning and remembering the patterns, steps, and timing of dances it a great way to keep the mind active and sharp.
. Emotional health. Depression is a major problem among seniors, whether from isolation, grief due to the loss of loved ones, simply mourning the loss of youth. Finding an activity that keeps you busy and brings you passion or joy, such as dancing, can help avoid or alleviate depression.
. Expand horizons. Every dance, from classical waltz to modern hip hop, has an interesting history. Dancing expands your horizons by introducing you to new music and cultures that you may not have experienced before. As with any activity, you should check with your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to participate in the dance of your choice. Don't overdo it at first. Find a dance instructor who understands your limitations and will tailor lessons for your current abilities.
You are never too old to start, and don't be afraid of looking silly. If you are taking lessons, remember that everyone else is learning too. There is a dance for everyone, so find yours and just do it - for the health benefits, to improve your mind, or simply for the joy it brings you.
DANCE FOR YOUR SOUL
Dancing is not just good exercise; it is therapy for your soul. The emotional and mental benefits of dancing include: . Social interaction. Spouses and long-time friends pass away, and grown children move to distant places, making many seniors prone to becoming socially isolated. Dancing is inherently a social activity, done with a partner or group. It is a way to "get out of the house" and interact with others,

SENIOR CARE AT HOME, MAKING IT POSSIBLE.
Senior citizens often require additional care in their later years, especially if they are injured or otherwise incapacitated by disease. The traditional method of dealing with a debilitated senior has been to put him or her into a nursing or retirement home. However, this option can be quite expensive. Many seniors also prefer to reside in their own homes, wherein they can retain a much more active lifestyle. Likewise, by remaining in their own homes, seniors remain more in touch with neighbors, friends, and family members.
laundry service, grooming and dressing supervision, hourly and 24/7 care, transportation, and even companionship. These services are much more affordable than the placement of an elderly individual into a fully staffed retirement or nursing home. Most importantly, senior home care provides family members with the peace of mind that their loved one is being well taken care of, even if that loved one is many miles away.
Senior care at home also provides one additional advantage to retirement and nursing homes: quality of life is maintained. Many seniors feel that their independence is lost if they are take away to a traditional care facility. With care being given at home, seniors feel a greater degree of autonomy over their own lives, a critical advantage since loss of autonomy often leads to depression. Also, senior care in the home can be implemented gradually, so that the senior, instead of feeling threatened, becomes accustomed to the caretaker or the service over time.
Unfortunately, it is not always possible for neighbors, friends, and family members to fully take care of a senior living at home. For example, adult children of two aging parents may be able to deliver meals to their house in the evening but may be unable to stop over in the morning to make sure that each parent has dressed and eaten breakfast. The amount of time needed to adequately care for an aging senior can become tremendous, especially if that senior has dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or other illnesses which make the home environment unsafe for him or her.
By implementing senior care in the home, family members can be assured that their loved one is being well cared for. Senior care in the home also alleviates the guilt and expense that often accompany the placement of a senior citizen into a retirement or nursing home.
However, in recent years there has been a strong push to keep seniors in their original homes. Various services have sprung up to meet this demand, including businesses which provide meal delivery, maid and

GIFT ALTERNATIVES FOR A SENIOR WHO HAS EVERYTHING
If you're looking for a suitable gift for an older person, you may be struggling. Chances are they already possess all they need and want, having acquired them throughout the years. What's more, they may not have much spare space for more. As for edible gifts, bear in mind they may be on a medical diet, or watching their weight. But at their time of life, they may need things you can't wrap, such as company, family contact, or a change of scene, so a gift or treat to address these sorts of need would bring them true happiness.
1. A SPECIAL VISIT - If the senior person you have in mind has limited social contact, they'd be thrilled to receive a visit from you as their gift. If you already visit them regularly, an extended, celebratory occasion would be a valued bonus. Perhaps bring balloons, a game to play or party crackers to pull, to add sparkle to the occasion.
2. AN OUTING - Getting out and about may be easier said than done for your elderly loved one, so they'd love a little outing with you. Depending on their preferences, and also on the weather and locality, you might take them to a scenic beauty spot, or perhaps to a show at the theater, with a meal out to round off the day. For a simpler and more affordable outing, a stroll in the park and a coffee shop snack could be just the ticket.
3. AN ONLINE GIFT - Is the person you have in mind connected to the Internet? If not, they may be glad of a mobile phone for instant contact with friends and family at all times. A little training may be needed if they're new to the internet, but once they get to grips with the basics, they'll be able to access a wealth of new interests and contacts, as well as keeping more closely in touch with their circle. If the person is already Internet-savvy, perhaps an accessory, such as earphones or a padded laptop tray.
4. A PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM - If you're keen to give a physical, wrappable gift, a photo album would be an excellent choice. Buy a traditional, book-style album, small and light enough for your elderly friend to hold with ease. If they have old photos to fill it with, this would make an enjoyable, shared activity; alternatively, fill the album beforehand with photos of people and places dear to them. Either way, your handy gift will inspire happy browsing and dreaming. The older person in your life will be over the moon to have your wonderful gift or treat. They'll be cheered not only by the item or event itself, but by the understanding you've shown in thinking up a gift they can really value.

CAREGIVER TIPS: How to Help Your Loved One with Hearing Loss
If you are the caregiver for an elderly or disabled loved one, communication needs to be a top priority. When your senior parent can't hear well, it becomes difficult and frustrating for you both; even simple conversations can become sources of stress and tension if your loved one's hearing is not what it should be.
Even worse, many seniors will isolate themselves and avoid conversations, simply because they are too stressful, or they fear they will not be understood. This isolation can lead to depression and other common senior health issues, so having some conversations about hearing and scheduling a wellcheck or hearing test is an essential part of senior wellness care.
TALKING ABOUT HEARING WITH MOM OR DAD In some cases, hearing loss is a source of worry for your loved one, but they won't want to admit it. Older gentlemen, in particular, may feel that they need to be "strong" or stoic and just deal with it or deny that it is happening at all. Approaching the conversation in the right way, at the right time can help you both come to a resolution you can feel good about, one that includes a hearing test and help as needed.
UNDERSTAND AGING IS TOUGH If you are caring for an elderly parent, you see the signs of aging every day. It can be hard for an elderly person to realize that one more sense is going or that an ability they once had is now gone. Hearing is no different; if you understand how difficult it is to cope with, you'll be able to approach the conversation with compassion and empathy. Simply asking if they've been having any trouble hearing lately could be all that is needed to open the floodgates & begin an honest conversation.
book your own well test at the same time. You'll be setting the right example and a test now can serve as a baseline for your hearing later in life and is an important part of your own well-care.
TAKE THE 1ST STEPS TOWARD HEALTHY HEARING Since hearing screenings and tests are essential parts of your overall health, schedule a visit sooner rather than later. Your doctor will check out both the physical structure of your loved one's ears and how well they can hear different sounds and speech. You'll leave with either peace of mind that all is well or a plan for next steps.
BREAK THE STEREOTYPES Mom still uses a flip phone, and Dad loves his VHS tapes, so they may also be out of date when it comes to the common old stereotypes about hearing loss or treatment. While hearing aids may once have been huge and noticeable, they are far more discreet today; the stigma that may have been present decades ago is now gone as well. Hearing loss is seen as part of life, and one that is often easily remedied.
TACKLE THE LOSS TOGETHER Your loved one is not alone, let them know it by learning more about hearing tests and possible solutions together. Schedule a visit where you can come along; if you are already an active caregiver, you'll need to be there anyway. Even if you are not yet a full-time caregiver you can go along to the appointment and then do an enjoyable or social activity afterward. Better yet Page 18
