Choices in Care
Housing and Services Descriptions
INDEPENDENT LIVING Independent Living Communities offer amenities like a regular apartment community but have a minimum age requirement. In some communities, the minimum age is 55, and in others 62. Some may offer a reduced rent rate for those who qualify. Some of these senior communities have a pool, community room, and activities. They may or may not offer meal services.
RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES Residential care facilities provide rooms, meals, and personal care for those finding it difficult to live at home. Personal care may include assistance with bathing, dressing, taking medication, and help with toileting. Residential care facilities are most likely a single-family home, caring for a small number of adults.
ASSISTED LIVING Assisted Living Communities offer help with all aspects of daily living such as bathing, grooming, and dressing assistance, in semi-private or private living units. Most assisted living facilities offer a wide range of services and amenities such as meals, educational classes, exercise activities, and beauty parlors. Some allow residents to have pets.

MEMORY CARE Memory care facilities provide specialized care for those suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals with these conditions often need expert care in a safe environment. Memory care facilities offer enhanced medical services, social activities, 24-hour supervision, and daily meals. Memory care units offer increased security for those who may wander due to dementia or Alzheimer’s.
ADULT DAY CENTERS Adult day care centers offer a variety of programs and activities designed to promote well-being through social and health related services. Adult day care centers operate during daytime hours, usually Monday-Friday and provide a safe, supportive environment. Meals are typically included and snacks during the day.
HOSPICE At some point, it may not be possible to cure those with a serious illness and a person with a terminal illness may choose to discontinue treatment. Hospice care offers comprehensive comfort care and support for the patient and their family. The hospice team includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and trained volunteers. Hospice care can be provided in the home, nursing homes, hospital, and in a specialized hospice center. The care team visits regularly and provides support 24/7.
HOME HEALTH Home Health care is a wide range of health care services that is provided in the home after illness or injury. Skilled nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapies, as well as social services may be provided based on the need. Home health is usually less expensive, more convenient, and just as effective as services provided in a skilled nursing facility (SNF).
SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES A Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) is a special facility or part of a hospital providing necessary medical and professional services such as nursing care, physical, occupational and speech therapies. Stays in skilled nursing facilities are normally temporary to resolve a medical need or further recover from a recent hospital stay.
REHAB FACILITIES Rehab Facilities provide specialized medical care and comprehensive rehabilitative services (physical, occupational, and speech therapy) to those who are injured, disabled, or suffer with a disability due to a stroke or other debilitating disease. Patients admitted to an acute rehabilitation facility are expected to make functional improvements in activities of daily living.
NURSING HOMES Nursing homes provide residential long-term care for the elderly or disabled. Nursing homes offer custodial care like bathing, dressing, and feeding.
*Insurance rules apply to medical facilities. When evaluating facilities, caregivers should consult quality ratings available by CMS on the internet.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome
Choices in Senior Care of Greater New Orleans is a magazine aimed toward senior citizens and their families to help them navigate the many senior living and health care options available in our region. As a daughter of elderly parents, I know how difficult it can be to research the many different options available to ensure your loved one continues to live life to the fullest. My goal is to provide an easy to read, comprehensive magazine that is both informative and educational. As I put together the first issue, I learned so much about what each of these facilities has to offer. I also discovered that there are many valuable resources available to those who have chosen to live at home. There truly is something for everyone...you just need to be able to locate it! Our advertisers are more than willing to meet with you and share what they have to offer so you can make the right decisions. We hope you find our Magazine Helpful and PLEASE share it with those who need information on the many Choices in Senior Care. Respectfully,

10,000 Baby Boomers
are turning 65 everyday. Is the healthcare industry prepared? Not aging isn’t an option, but one Northshore retirement community is about to offer more options for more comfortable aging. For the last decade, analysts have been predicting the onslaught of baby boomers reaching retirement age and fearing the healthcare industry and senior living providers we’re ill prepared to accommodate the masses. And “masses” was not an understatement. According to the AARP, that number is more than 10,000 American’s each day turning sixty-five years of age, but so far that onslaught hasn’t happened. Yes, it’s true large numbers of boomers are turning sixty-five as predicted, but let’ face it, being sixty-five years old today looks very different than it did forty years ago. And for that reason, the boomers seem to be easing into the industry more slowly than predicted instead of barging in and taking over. One reason for the lack of effect could be because people are living healthier and more active lifestyles and staying in their own home longer. Another reason could be that although baby boomers are coming of age, they are not necessarily retiring. But whatever the reason, we must acknowledge that when they do decide to retire, they have many more choices than in years past. For instance, up until the last couple of decades, when we could no longer live independently, we either moved in with a loved one or went to a “nursing home. After some research, it’s plain that today, the choices are abundant. For instance, there are life plan communities with a host of amenities such as golf courses, horse stables, fitness centers, catering to all activity levels of activity and the added bonus of a continuum of care as you progress through life. You enter the community while still living independently, then as needed, progress through assisted living and /or skilled nursing and dementia care if needed. Relatively new in senior offerings is the Adult Residential Care Communities, which is a more intimate settings where a small numbers of adults live in one residence, with their own private accommodations and are taken care of by an onsite staff. The most interesting undertaking we found was a new “hybrid” concept, which in a sense provides amenities offered by retirement communities to those non-residents who wish to remain in their home and age in place. We’ll focus on one of those hybrids because its located right here in Covington and available to the tri-parish area. At Your Service by Christwood is a new division of Christwood, the Northshore’s Premier Retirement Community. At Your Service offers a comprehensive in home and on-campus personal wellness service to support those in the 55+ age bracket. But what makes this so intriguing is they also offer an additional level of assistance to include general home maintenance services to help maintain your home. We all know maintaining a home can be daunting, even to the fittest of fit, but if you’re a senior living along or with a spouse, or an adult child caring for a loved one, it can be difficult to find reliable and trustworthy contractors and downright overwhelming to manage.

Page 15 At Your Service’s offerings are abundant based on individual needs. For instance, wellness options might include in-home personal assistants for independent clients who may want help with tasks like home organization, appointment scheduling, and running errands, light housekeeping and meal preparations, just to name a few. For the less independent they offer Certified Nursing Assistants who can help with all of the above services, but also includes elements to assist with the activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, and repositioning, all with a focus on personal wellness. Another innovative option At Your Service offers is an on campus Adult Day Stay program to provide a much-needed break for those caring for a loved one. If you need time, as little as two or as many as ten hours a day, to run your own errands, your loved one will be well cared for in a social setting with all meals and snacks included as well as engaging activities and entertainment. All of the above-mentioned services are offered a’ la carte, when and where you need them, at an hourly rate you can afford, and provided by Christwood employees, all vetted through background checks and drug testing. So, whether that onslaught of boomers happens this year or the next or ten years from now, options are only getting better for seniors and based on progress will continue to do so.

Mom, Dad...
we need to talk!
One of the most difficult things to experience is the transition from being a Son or Daughter into the ADULT CHILD. You might ask, what exactly is an “ADULT CHILD?” An Adult child, according to dictionary support means in essence… “A son or daughter that has reached the age of majority.” Or, simply stated an individual who is now in charge of making future decisions that govern the wellbeing of loved ones such as their parents, grandparents, or other elderly, or, disabled family members. If this describes you or a situation that you are familiar with…YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Making tough decisions in the best interest of health and safety are frightening and cause extreme anxiety for the family. Did you know that caring for and keeping a loved one at home can truly not be in the best interest of the loved one? Lack of socialization, lack of consistency and routine, loneliness etc., can lead to additional crisis such as depression, anxiety and can prevent loved ones from thriving. Often our good intentions, and, well, guilt, keep us from making the choices that can keep the entire family healthier, happier and safer. The thought of placing a loved one into a community is difficult for many reasons, but the most prominent reason is lack of education regarding the benefits of a reputable Senior Living Community. From individuals who need simple socialization, to others who need medication management, physical assist like bathing, dressing and toileting needs, todays Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care communities can easily dispel the stereotypical views of “facilities,’ of yesterday! Everything from care staff, to 24-hour nursing on site, most if not all meals, laundry, housekeeping and all engagement activities including. And don’t forget the transportation provided to outings, entertainment, Dr’s. Appointments, and so much more! When it’s time to have this conversation with a loved one, do your homework, seek advice, map out several choices, locations and price points. The more you know the gentler this transition will be. When all is said and done you will regain 100% quality time with those you love, and your loved ones will once again feel a sense of independence that cannot be offered at home! I am an adult child myself. Mom, in Assisted Living now, reminds me constantly that I should have encouraged her to do this sooner. After all, she gave me the very best and I want the best for her! Communicating Effectively
within the Alzheimer’s Family
Do you get frustrated when you can’t seem to make your loved one understand you? Does your loved one find it increasingly difficult to express him or herself? Although each person is unique, Alzheimer’s creates distinct challenges in regard to how people express themselves and understand what is being communicated to them. Alzheimer’s disease affects communication in all individuals, as verbal skills gradually decrease and are lost. A person with Alzheimer’s disease begins to rely on non-verbal communication in order to understand what is happening.
You may notice the following changes in your loved one’s communication: Difficulty finding the correct word(s); creating new words for ones that are forgotten; repeating or overusing a word or phrase; trouble creating logical sentences; cursing or offensive language; and diminished speech. If you notice one or more of these indicators in your loved one for an extended period of time, and they do not have an Alzheimer’s or other Dementia diagnosis, you should consult with their Primary Care Practitioner. Things to remember when a loved one has Alzheimer’s disease: • • • • • • •

Stretching Your Money
further is always needed!
…and with life expectancies rising annually, saving money and making the most out of life most imperative right now. Like it or not, we are all getting older, but we can age well as we continue with a quality of life that is exciting and fulfilling. The longer we live, the longer we get to experience everything life has to offer is, however, its also likely that we need to save some cash to see us through retirement. Saving money as long as possible can go a long way on our road to a long life. But, there are a ton of things our there that can help us save money. While asking for the “senior discount” might not be something we want to do – you should ask for it because you earned it!
Here are some things to thing about to stretch that retirement dollar: Public transportation Although it's wholly dependent on the parish you live in, public transportation or medical transportation may be available to seniors for free or for a minimal cost. For example to allow seniors the opportunity to engage and participate in the community, Jefferson Council on Aging provides transportation from their homes to and from senior centers. Look up your parish’s senior services department or your local senior centers and ask them about the perks they have that can help with affordable, if not free, transportation. Food Restaurants often have perks for seniors – but don’t necessarily promote it. Like most establishments, it never hurts to ask, “do you have any senior discounts?” You will be surprised how many do, like most corporate-owned Taco Bell locations allow seniors 65 and up to receive a drink free of charge whether or not they purchase food as well. In addition, grocery stores (the large brands, as well as the smaller independents) have a senior discount daily or a once-a-week special. In New Orleans, the independently-owned and family-operated chain of Langenstein’s grocery stores provide a senior discount every Wednesday with a percentage off your total grocery bill. And there are tons more – movies, airline flights, medical needs – that have discounts for seniors. And with the addition of a AAA or AARP membership, the discounts grow exponentially. Overall a good rule of thumb is to simply ask…and most of the time you will receive a great senior discount. Painting a Portrait
for a Logo and a Legacy When Judy, the concierge at Laketown Village, asked Norman Weinstien to paint a portrait that would tie in Laketown to the Pegasus Company logo, I don’t believe she realized how great of a job he would do. I doubt she was able to imagine the painting he was working on in what he calls a “large dressing room would turn out to be so absolutely breathtaking. What some do not realize is that Norman and Carol Weinstien have been married for 69 years and he is actually an architect by trade, but Carol saw his
passion for painting early on in their marriage and encouraged Norman to take art classes so he could show his abilities to the world. Over the years he has attended several different classes in all types of different art mediums at the request of his adoring wife. Over time he has sold several of his pieces along the Gulf Coast. He finds artwork comforting and I have a suspicion that Carol found the happiness his artwork brought him and others comforting to her, as well. Ray Fink | (504) 467-1000 Laketown Village

Downsizing or Moving? How Seniors can sell their home when downsizing or moving. The packing…the staging…the fix up…selling your home after living in one place can be emotional and just downright too much physically. Often the upgrades and maintenance that was deferred to another day starts to pile up and makes preparing your house to sell exhausting. The best thing is to have a plan in place so you can prepare your house to sell and make the process a lot easier. While you might have lived in your home for decades, it will not take as long to get it in ship shape condition to sell – especially with the help of others. Having a plan in place and knowing when to reach out for help can help make preparing the house for sale easier. Update Older Décor After living in a home for decades, older homes can have older décor that can often lower the offers from potential home buyers. Some slight cosmetic improvements before listing the home makes a dramatic differences in the selling price Replace or remove worn flooring. Replacing old carpet or scuffed linoleum can give your home a fresh new look. Have the walls repainted. Remove or replace older worn pieces of furniture. All of these things can be done with the help of a local handyman and often are quick, easy fixes that can increase the perceived value of the home.

Page 29 Clean Out Storage Areas While your lifelong treasures bring you great joy, to some they can be considered clutter. Clean out your closets and storage spaces, declutter the living spaces, organize the garage‌a clean house is often a house that gets a great asking price. And don’t forget that you can ask younger family members and friends to accomplish this task. And breaking up the tasks over time will help ensure that your home will be ready when it becomes time to list and sell the property. Perform Deferred Maintenance Older homes wear out over time, and waiting to do maintenance can make selling a home that much more difficult. Make a list of all deferred maintenance, from leaky faucets and toilets to broken light fixtures. A routine plumbing review and video inspection from a local plumber like Rooter Man or a quick air conditioning service from a local A/C company like Robert Refrigeration can help fix those problems that could be big ones – or ones that reduce the selling price of your home. Roni LaVenia is the CEO of locally-owned Rooter Man, the #1 choice in Southern Louisiana over 40 years for all your plumbing & drain cleaning needs.
