Music Is Power

M

usic is unique among art forms in its capacity to empower people. It can transcend language and socio-cultural backgrounds, age and education, even mental and physical disabilities. It elicits emotion, whether from infants or the most educated among us, delving beneath thoughts and conscious feelings, to move us. Music, in one form or another, is truly something from which all people can draw strength. One poignant demonstration of the power of music was reported recently by the BBC, in a piece on the 20th anniversary of Latvia’s independence from the Soviet Union. In a video link posted to www.bbc.co.uk on May 2nd, it is noted that “an integral part of the fight for freedom was folk singing, which kept the [Latvian] culture alive during the years of Soviet rule.” These folk songs, called “dainas,” tell the traditional stories of the local people and played such a large role in affirming the Lat“For the first vian national identity in the face of the USSR that their indetime, many of pendence movement in the late 1980s became known as the her students “Singing Revolution.” Of course, music has historically been a fundamentally with mental and unifying force. The Guest Editorial article in this issue shares a heartwarming story of how Rebecca Sturgis-Biethman, a vocal music teacher in Bluffton, South Carolina, was able to use music to help boost one specific niche among her student body. Using a little bit of ingenuity and about $500, Rebecca was able to build a music lab for the students with disabilities that she often has mainstreamed into her music classes. “The beauty of this Special Education music project is that everyone involved comes out a winner,” she writes. For the first time, many of her students with mental and physical handicaps were able to experience the joy of making music. Do you incorporate students with disabilities in your ensembles? usic educators and the Medfield, Mass. Historical Society have joined together to form Friends of The Lowell Mason House in an effort to save the home that Lowell Mason was born and raised in. Most music educators know Mason as the “father of music education,” as well as for his arrangements of “Joy to the World” and as composer of “Nearer, My God to Thee,” the hymn a string ensemble allegedly played as the Titanic sank. A church music director in Boston, he introduced the concept of school music education into Boston schools, the first in the United States to have music studies. hroughout my teaching career, I typically have had two or three special education children mainstreamed into my Chorus I classes. I have had the privilege of working with children who have Down’s syndrome, mental re-

tardation, and other profoundly physically and mentally handicapped boys and girls who have participated alongside the rest By Rebecca Sturgis-Biethman

of the students in my regular music classes. Working with these children is often the highlight of my day because of the wonderful joy, enthusiasm, effort, and hugs that they bring with them. While their vocal range is often limited, at best, they certainly give it their all.

10 Choral Director’s Annual Resource Guide 2010

To be absolutely honest, while I love having special needs students mainstreamed into my classes, I have not always felt I was teaching at their developmental level. Too often, as teachers, we tend to teach to the middle of our students’ ability level, which can leave the needs of the gifted students and the students who are struggling unaddressed. Finding projects that will engage them is often a time management challenge. Attempting to address the needs of our higher and lower students while trying to stay on top of the details for our next concert (which is always just around the corner) is no easy task. There are only so many hours in each class period and we can only do so much to help any given child. However, this past year, we did have a surprising breakthrough that made a significant difference for our Special Needs kids. And as an added bonus, it did not take a great deal of extra time on my part.

Pitches and Intervals While I was teaching “pitch and intervals” to my high school chorus class, I decided to use a set of octave desk bells as a visual lesson. All the teenagers wanted to play the bells, but I noticed that Avi, one of the boys in a wheel chair with deformed hands and some learning challenges, was especially interested. He pulled his wheel chair up to the front of the class and while I called out the number-scale degree of the bell, he proudly played a simple melody. When he finished, the entire chorus broke into spontaneous applause, and Avi felt like a hero. All I heard from Avi for the next few days was, “When can I learn to play another song for the chorus?” Now I had a challenge. How was I going to teach this handicapped teenager to read music? We tried several strategies, but our most successful was to enlarge to poster size three simple “8-note bell songs.” We taped these large pieces of music to the wall and Avi’s assistant pointed to the numbers that were written above the notes and – “eureka!” – Avi was

playing a song on the desk bells! Soon after that, all of the Special Ed students wanted to learn how to play songs on the bells. For the first time in my classes, they were making real music. We experimented with color coding the notation and using the letter names for the bells. The students, however, were Teaching Assistant Carol Queck with students Avi Tinoco, Kurt adamant that they Zawaki, & Garret Johnson. preferred the numbers for the pitches instead of the colors (Unfortunately, we have not had or the letters. We also tried using hand bells instead of the desk bells, which proved to be a true disaster. The With our newfound melodic sucadvantages of the desk bells were they cess, we wondered if the students could took less hand and arm strength to transfer their ability to play desk bells make a sound, they required less coorto a piano keyboard. In addition, the Special Ed assistants were doing all of the teaching and thoroughly enjoying the progress they were seeing with their kids. However, the biggest thrill was that for

the first time the students were playing songs that everyone recognized. After our success with melodies and desk bells it occurred to me, why not create a small “music lab” within the Special Ed wing and let the assistants expand their music efforts in the classroom? I wrote and received a grant for $500 from a local arts council to get the project started. Here is the budget that was proposed for the grant: • 3 piano keyboards w/headphones $300 • 3 keyboard adaptors $ 60 • 2 sets of desk bells $ 96 • 5 – 8-note song books $ 25 • 5 – More 8-note songs $ 25 Total $506

Special Ed Music Lab The teachers in the Special Ed classes enjoy having the keyboards in their rooms. Some of the comments have

“Sometimes our best teaching experiences can come from such simple moments as finding a new use for a desk bell.” been that the pianos can be used as a reward for good choices, or to calm a student who is having a troubling day. They also can put together events like a simple recital and a little reception for parents and students to hear their piano and desk bell songs. One offshoot of this that took us by surprise was that a few of the advanced chorus musicians found time to visit the Special Ed classrooms to help teach

the melodies. One senior chorus student has even decided to major in Music Therapy because of her work with handicapped teenagers. Another bonus was the Special Ed assistants learned how to play the piano. One assistant even bought a keyboard for Christmas because of her new music skills. The beauty of this Special Education music project is that everyone involved comes out a winner. The advanced high school musicians are learning how to work with handicapped students. The Special Ed teaching assistants are learning some basic musical skills. The Special Ed parents are thrilled that their children are learning to play recognizable songs, and the best part is that the Special Ed students are learning a musical life skill that they will take with them forever. Plus, the desk bells, piano keyboards and Special Ed assistants in the Special Education wing will continue to encourage and teach the handicapped students music skills for years to come. After all of this excitement with the Special Education students and their newly acquired music skills, a thought occurred to me. Sometimes, our best teaching moments are not about our biggest concerts. Sometimes our best teaching experiences can come from such simple moments as finding a new use for a desk bell.

Scholarships and financial aid are available Program length: 3 - 6 weeks varies by age division June - August For more than 80 years, young artists from around the world have traveled to Interlochen to learn from leading artists, to be inspired by exceptional peers and for an experience in the arts that lasts a lifetime. At the high school level, Interlochen offers two programs that are tailored to different interests and skill levels: vocal soloist studies or vocal arts/operetta. Both high school programs offer private lessons and numerous performance opportunities. Intermediate-aged vocalists rehearse and perform in ensembles and participate in an operetta workshop and sight-singing classes. Intermediate vocal students will perform in choirs, small ensembles and music dramas. Students develop performance skills through the Intermediate Vocal Ensemble, which emphasizes literature that is appropriate for adolescents. Vocal Arts students also participate in an opera-workshop class. Solo and small ensemble skills are combined with experiences in theatre to create an operetta production. 1440 S. Priest Dr. #102 Tempe, AZ 85281 (800) 395-2036 FAX: (480) 894-5137 John Wiscombe, President E-mail: info@musiccelebrations.com Web site: www.musiccelebrations.com Here at Music Celebrations International (MCI), we pride ourselves on the musical stimulation our tours and festivals provide. The purpose of Music Celebrations is to provide life-changing experiences that will raise the level of musicianship and dedication to the performing arts around the globe! We enthusiastically endorse Ludwig Van Beethoven’s statement that “Music can change the world.” MCI’s commitment is that every director and participating musical group has a memorable and exceptional musical experience. MCI espouses a philosophy recently expressed quite eloquently by a participating director: “Music isn’t about competition. It has to do with how we feel and ideas that cannot be expressed in words. There is a world that is not verbal, and that’s a world of music.” MCI is a full-service concert and festival organizing company and travel agency, dealing exclusively with performance ensembles—including instrumental, choral, and dance ensembles.

Rehearsal Arts, LLC

50 Hillandale Rd. Westport, CT 06880 (203) 227-1277 FAX: (203) 227-3188 Bill Brett E-mail: rearts@optonline.net Web site: www.rehearsalarts.com Our new rehearsal CDs, called SingleParts, actually use a real professional singer who vocalizes your voice part with a background of an actual commercial recording of the work. Your part is sung as a solo to you in the full performance context of orchestra and chorus. This way, in addition to your notes, your teaching singer gives the well-pronounced text, proper breath points, entrances, dynamics and intonation. One other special advantage is that SingleParts takes the most difficult passages from your part and records them at a slower speed - you can sing along and learn it right, and then repeat the passage at the normal speed (these are called StudySpots). Overall, these CDs are a much better product than what other companies offer. Master your music with SingleParts. Resource Publications Inc. 160 E. “Listen” Up “Give students a chance to hear how the entire chorus sounds. When a piece is almost performance ready, select a few students to be ‘listeners’ as the group does a run-through. At the end of the song, each listener should comment on at least one specific thing that the chorus did well and one thing that still needs work.” Margaret Callaghan Blanchard Memorial School Boxborough, Mass.
