Music Is Power

usic is unique among art forms in its capacity to empower people. It can transcend language and socio-cultural backgrounds, age and education, even mental and physical disabilities. It elicits emotion, whether from infants or the most educated among us, delving beneath thoughts and conscious feelings, to move us. Music, in one form or another, is truly something from which all people can draw strength. One poignant demonstration of the power of music was reported recently by the BBC, in a piece on the 20th anniversary of Latvia’s independence from the Soviet Union. Using a little bit of ingenuity and about $500, Rebecca was able to build a music lab for the students with disabilities that she often has mainstreamed into her music classes. “The beauty of this Special Education music project is that everyone involved comes out a winner,” she writes. HeadLines The Complete Choral Musician Workshop

he Offstage Group will be host to music educators, musicians and, students at the 2010 Complete Choral Musician Workshop on June 27 – 30 in New York City. Emmy-nominated conductor and vocal educator, Judith Clurman, will lead the three-day intensive program. She will be joined by conductors, composers, scholars, choreographers, and vocal pedagogues, who will provide a handson approach between the faculty and students. Attendees will be encouraged to perform and conduct for each other, exchange ideas on the current and future choral and vocal trends, participate in discussions, and network with other conductors, music educators, singers, and composers. Classes include Conducting, Singing, The Art of Breathing, Sound Design, Managing a Chorus, and Meet the Composer. Students will have an opportunity to meet famous composers including Charles Strouse and David Langas. 2010 World Choir Games

he World Choir Games will open in Shaoxing, China on July 15, 2010. The World Choir Games is a biannual international choir festival taking place on different continents. In the twenty years since it was established, more than 5,000 choirs and some 230,000 singers from 100 nations have taken part in the festival. Music Educators Work To Save Lowell Mason Home

usic educators and the Medfield, Mass. Historical Society have joined together to form Friends of The Lowell Mason House in an effort to save the home that Lowell Mason was born and raised in. Most music educators know Mason as the “father of music education,” as well as for his arrangements of “Joy to the World” and as composer of “Nearer, My God to Thee,” the hymn a string ensemble allegedly played as the Titanic sank. A church music director in Boston, he introduced the concept of school music education into Boston schools, the first in the United States to have music studies. A developer purchased the Mason and initially discussed the possibility of demolishing the historic structure to build a two-family house in its place. Sing for the Cure Celebrating 10th Anniversary On Sunday, June 6, 2010, Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) and Carnegie Hall will host the 10th Anniversary of Sing for the Cure, a choral festival of celebration for soloists, narrators, choir, and symphony orchestra, featuring inspirational stories of breast cancer survivors as told through song. Conductor Laureate, Dr. Timothy Seelig will be conducting. The evening will also feature the world premiere performance of a piece for treble chorus by acclaimed contemporary American composer, Joseph Martin, with Maestro Stephen Roddy at the podium. he members of MENC: The National Association for Music Education elected Nancy Ditmer national president-elect for 20102012. Ditmer, director of bands and professor of Music Education at The College of Wooster (Ohio) since 1984, will assume the office on July 1, 2010 and become national president on July 1, 2012. Previously, Ditmer served as MENC North Central Division president (2002-2004) and president of the Ohio Music Education Association (1996-1998). A nationally-known clinician and notable educator, she was designated a 2008 Lowell Mason Fellow by MENC and received the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Music Education Association, among many other honors during her career. ACDA’s Summer Choral Composers Forum

ummer Choral Composers Forum, co-sponsored by Lehigh University Choral Arts and the American Choral Directors Association will be held on June 20 - 27, 2010, at Lehigh University, Zoellner Arts Center, Bethlehem, Penn. Aspiring composers will work in a supportive atmosphere, workshopping new pieces with mentor-composers Chen Yi, ACDA’s 2012 Brock Commission Composer, and Steven Sametz, ACDA’s 2011 Brock Commission Composer. Participants will have their compositions read on a daily basis by the choir-in-residence, The Princeton Singers, to provide feedback on their work. The week culminates with a performance by The Princeton Singers of the new works which will be considered for publication by major music publishers. of the students in my regular music classes. Working with these children is often the highlight of my day because of the wonderful joy, enthusiasm, effort, and hugs that they bring with them. While their vocal range is often limited, at best, they certainly give it their all.

To be absolutely honest, while I love having special needs students mainstreamed into my classes, I have not always felt I was teaching at their developmental level. Too often, as teachers, we tend to teach to the middle of our students’ ability level, which can leave the needs of the gifted students and the students who are struggling unaddressed. Finding projects that will engage them is often a time management challenge. Attempting to address the needs of our higher and lower students while trying to stay on top of the details for our next concert (which is always just around the corner) is no easy task. There are only so many hours in each class period and we can only do so much to help any given child. However, this past year, we did have a surprising breakthrough that made a significant difference for our Special Needs kids. And as an added bonus, it did not take a great deal of extra time on my part.

Pitches and Intervals While I was teaching “pitch and intervals” to my high school chorus class, I decided to use a set of octave desk bells as a visual lesson. All the teenagers wanted to play the bells, but I noticed that Avi, one of the boys in a wheel chair with deformed hands and some learning challenges, was especially interested. He pulled his wheel chair up to the front of the class and while I called out the number-scale degree of the bell, he proudly played a simple melody. When he finished, the entire chorus broke into spontaneous applause, and Avi felt like a hero. All I heard from Avi for the next few days was, “When can I learn to play another song for the chorus?” Now I had a challenge. How was I going to teach this handicapped teenager to read music? We tried several strategies, but our most successful was to enlarge to poster size three simple “8-note bell songs.” We taped these large pieces of music to the wall and Avi’s assistant pointed to the numbers that were written above the notes and – “eureka!” – Avi was

playing a song on the desk bells! Soon after that, all of the Special Ed students wanted to learn how to play songs on the bells. For the first time in my classes, they were making real music. We experimented with color coding the notation and using the letter names for the bells. the first time the students were playing songs that everyone recognized. After our success with melodies and desk bells it occurred to me, why not create a small “music lab” within the Special Ed wing and let the assistants expand their music efforts in the classroom? I wrote and received a grant for $500 from a local arts council to get the project started. Here is the budget that was proposed for the grant: • 3 piano keyboards w/headphones $300 • 3 keyboard adaptors $ 60 • 2 sets of desk bells $ 96 • 5 – 8-note song books $ 25 • 5 – More 8-note songs $ 25 Total $506

They also can put together events like a simple recital and a little reception for parents and students to hear their piano and desk bell songs. One offshoot of this that took us by surprise was that a few of the advanced chorus musicians found time to visit the Special Ed classrooms to help teach

the melodies. One senior chorus student has even decided to major in Music Therapy because of her work with handicapped teenagers. Another bonus was the Special Ed assistants learned how to play the piano. One assistant even bought a keyboard for Christmas because of her new music skills. The beauty of this Special Education music project is that everyone involved comes out a winner. The advanced high school musicians are learning how to work with handicapped students. The Special Ed teaching assistants are learning some basic musical skills. The Special Ed parents are thrilled that their children are learning to play recognizable songs, and the best part is that the Special Ed students are learning a musical life skill that they will take with them forever. Plus, the desk bells, piano keyboards and Special Ed assistants in the Special Education wing will continue to encourage and teach the handicapped students music skills for years to come. After all of this excitement with the Special Education students and their newly acquired music skills, a thought occurred to me. Sometimes, our best teaching moments are not about our biggest concerts. Sometimes our best teaching experiences can come from such simple moments as finding a new use for a desk bell.
