From the Editor Summer is here at last! If your office is like mine, it is full of misplaced items and clutter remaining from multiple events throughout the last choir year. Before beginning to plan for August, things must be put back in order. I have a difficult time focusing on the new until I am done with the old. I need closure! I recently sorted through several packing cartons given to me by a music minister who was cleaning out his church files. Inside the boxes were copies of The Chorister and Choristers Guild Letters dating back to the 1950’s. It was hard to go through those boxes quickly since I was so delightfully distracted by the covers and the history I held in my hands. It reminded me of my first trip to the Choristers Guild office in Dallas when Jim Rindelaub placed the first issue of Letters in my hands—Volume 1, Issue 1! It is great to be involved in things that stand the test of time, and to be counted among the lineage of this great community of church musicians. Perhaps in the midst of preparing for the new, we need to spend a bit of time relishing the old...or at least that is what I will tell visitors when they look aghast at my less than tidy office. Be sure to browse through the great resources in this issue. We have added some great new items and repeated a few favorites. Check out the lists of Choristers Guild Bestsellers, and make sure you haven’t overlooked adding some of these gems to your library. Take a look at the Anthem Feature, “The Fish Caught Him”. This will surely become a favorite of your younger choristers. We also begin a yearlong index of contemporary resources for significant days on the church calendar, and we again offer devotionals for summer choirs and camps. Take some time for rest, relaxation, and restoration this summer. I’ll be cleaning my office!

S U BM I T YOU R P H OTOS !

Keep singing the song!

From the Sacred Choral Editor I hope many of you are already enjoying the contents of your most recent choral packet. I love paging through the brand new scores and either popping the demo CD in my car or listening to the Choristers Guild’s SoundCloud playlist on my phone. It’s such fun to hear the demos and imagine what the anthems might sound like in my own choir room. Here’s a bit of trivia: the first Choristers Guild choral packet to include a demo CD was the Spring 2005 packet. A decade ago! When we began the demo recordings ten years ago, all the demos were recorded and produced in a studio. We were fortunate to partner with the talented staff of The Lodge Recording Studio in Indianapolis, who have since helped us bring hundreds of anthems to life. Choristers Guild made a significant decision a few years ago, when we began inviting fine children’s and adult ensembles across the country to participate in demo recordings. I believe partnering with some of the best and brightest directors and choirs in the country not only produces a great demo CD for our members, but brings us face-to-face with our mission: to nurture the spiritual and musical growth of youth and children. Twice each year, 60-80 choristers get to experience the music of Choristers Guild as they rehearse and record each new anthem. Since 2013, Choristers Guild has partnered with the Chattanooga Girls Choir (LuAnn Holden), the Chattanooga Boys Choir (Vincent Oakes), the Nashville Children’s Choir (James Wells), the Charlotte Children’s Choir (Sandy Holland), and the Lee University Chamber Choir (Cameron LaBarr). We’ve been fortunate to have the Tennessee Chamber Choir, under the direction of Cameron LaBarr, record our mixed-voice anthems for the past few seasons. The Fall 2015 demo recordings feature two more of the country’s premier treble ensembles: the Princeton Girlchoir and the American Boychoir Training Choir. Three ensembles from the Princeton Girlchoir organization ventured out on snowy, icy nights last winter to rehearse and record. Special thanks to Grace Notes and Semi-Tones, both directed by Melissa Malvar-Keylock, and Cantores, directed by Tom Shelton. It was equally exciting to see the American Boychoir Training Choir, directed by Fred Meads, in action. What courteous, bright young musicians! Choristers Guild is so grateful for these new partnerships with our friends in the Northeast.

Here’s wishing you a refreshing summer filled with musical experiences to remember…

How to Make a Good Choir Sound Great CHARLENE ARCHIBEQUE CGGIA18 $24.95 DVD This remarkable DVD presents a systematic approach to improving the sound of choirs of all ages, types, and stages of development. From vocal warm-ups to rehearsals to culminating performances, this DVD provides a step-by-step guide to help choral ensembles to reach their full potential. In this DVD, many different standing positions are demonstrated and the numerous factors involved in deciding which position to use are discussed. Dr. Charlene Archibeque demonstrates unique placements that work in varied rehearsal situations, including standing, sitting, using risers, and dealing with a flat floor. She also explores the most effective positions for performance situations, taking into consideration the acoustics of the venue, the strengths and weaknesses of the choir, and the repertoire to be performed. A focal point of this DVD is the demonstration of the decision-making process involved in the placement of individual singers within a section. Blend, balance, intonation, musicianship, and aural skills—as well as strength of each voice and timbre of each singer—are factors that affect these decisions. Unique “before and after” comparisons, suitable for showing to singers, highlight the contrasts prior to and after voice matching and/or positioning of singers for specific repertoire. The powerful effects of capturing each singer’s innate expressiveness and imagination are displayed via contrasting examples of engaged and unengaged singing. This DVD, with its unprecedented combination of explanations, graphics, and singer demonstrations, offers a unique and valuable resource for both conductor-teachers and singers.

Anthem Feature

F R O M T H E C H O R I S T E R S G U I L D C ATA L O G

THE FISH CAUG HT HIM by Randy Cox and Kris Crunk | CGA1401 Unison/two-part with piano

USES & TIPS BY KATIE HOUTS AND SUSAN EERNISSE

ANTHEM DESCRIPTION

TEACHING TIPS

This fun, narrative anthem is the newest addition to our Rote to Note series for young singers. Jonah’s encounter with the big fish is told through call-andresponse singing from Part I and Part II. If your choir isn’t ready to split, don’t worry; Part II echoes the text sung by Part I, so you won’t miss any of Jonah’s adventures by omitting Part II. The whimsical unison refrain gives plenty of opportunity to learn about syncopation, while the descriptive verses give choristers a chance to focus on clear diction.

Share the story of Jonah from a child-friendly translation of the Bible or from a colorful picture book. Allow those who are familiar with the story to assist with a review or retelling of the key details. Echo speak the text of each stanza as you tell the story. Be sure to speak the text in rhythm as notated in the anthem. When you later distribute the printed music, your children will find confidence in seeing/hearing the now familiar rhythm patterns!

Looking for ways to use this piece in worship? Here are just a few: • Do you commission your parish education volunteers, the ones who introduce beloved characters to our children? Sing this piece on that Sunday as you give thanks for the teachers. • Looking for a piece to prep your choir for part singing? Start them with this anthem, as the two parts never sing simultaneously (except for the optional harmony on the final two notes). Your choir will learn how to watch the director for their cue and how to be respectful listeners when it’s not their turn to sing. • Check with your children’s ministry to see if they’ll be studying Jonah during the year. If Jonah’s story is part of the rotation, ask if the choir could sing during the education hour as another way to present the story.

If your choir is too small or inexperienced to divide into two groups for the echo phrases, consider using an adult or older child as a solo voice on the Group 1/Leader part. Using a color copier, copy the Listen/Sing reproducible found on page 34 onto white cardstock. Cut and fold as indicated, and attach to a wooden dowel, pencil, or paint stirrer. Use as a visual indicator for children to alternate listening and singing with the leader. Lead children to discover that the echo is an exact duplicate of the rhythm and text, but the echo’s melody is slightly different. This is a great teaching opportunity for introducing melodic direction/contour. Dramatize the story with characters and props. Select a child to portray Jonah and provide biblical attire from your costume supplies. Assign two children to be the “fish” and provide a net to “catch” Jonah, and release him at the appropriate times in the story. The dramatization could be for rehearsal/teaching sessions only, or could be adapted for public presentation providing added interest for younger audiences. Older audiences will love the irony of the thought that the fish “caught” the man—God got Jonah’s attention, and the humorous song text will get the attention of the listener.

ACTIVE DEVOTIONALS FOR CHILDREN BY KIMBERLY INGRAM Here are some engaging activities to help children explore the parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders from Matthew 7:24-27. Use these activities and devotionals in your summer choir rehearsals, fine arts camp, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School classes, or children’s choirs.

THE WISE AND FOOLISH BUILDERS MATTHEW 7:24-27 (NIV)

Jesus said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

1 2 3 4 5

The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

1 2 3 4 6

The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and it fell with a great crash!” *

*The numbered lines will help with Activities 1 and 3.

ACTIVE DEVOTIONALS FOR CHILDREN

DEVOTIONAL/ACTIVITY 1 MATERIALS NEEDED:

- Matthew 7:24-27 (including the numbered lines) printed onto poster board

ACT IT OUT!

• Divide children into 6 pairs or small groups. Assign each group one of the numbered lines from Matthew 7:24-27. • Allow two minutes for groups to create a simple action or gesture that shows the action of their line. They will be teaching their gesture or action to the entire group, so it should be simple enough for the whole class to perform together. • Provide time for each group to share their gesture and teach it to the class. The entire class should practice each gesture. • Read Matthew 7:24-27, assigning the words of Jesus to an adult, youth, or confident reader, and the whole class reading the numbered lines, using the gestures invented by each group.

• Rehearse the passage, and encourage unison gestures and dramatic expression.

• Be sure to always say the chapter/verse numbers, either at the beginning or end, so that everyone will know where to locate the verse! • Turn the poster upside down and let the children see if they already know this Scripture passage by memory.

DEVOTIONAL

In the story of the wise and foolish builders, do you think Jesus is talking about building houses, or building lives? What kinds of things do you think Jesus would want us to do to build a good foundation for our lives? (Write these answers on the board. Refer to the answers they gave in the next sentence.) We will be talking more about building strong foundations. When we pray, when we share, when we study our Bibles, (restate the children’s answers), we are building our lives on Jesus, and the lessons he taught us about God. Jesus will always help us to stand strong. He is our strong foundation.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus, help us to build our lives on you, and upon the words and lessons you taught. Help us to read our Bibles and learn more about God. Thank you for giving us lessons that help us grow wise and make good decisions. Thank you for being our strong foundation. Amen.

ACTIVE DEVOTIONALS FOR CHILDREN

DEVOTIONAL/ACTIVITY 2 MATERIALS NEEDED:

- 2 large plastic boxes - 15 quart size, $1 each at discount stores - Clean, dry sand - enough to fill box #1 with at least 6 inches of sand - 1 concrete paving stone with a wide, flat surface, with JESUS written in permanent marker on the bottom (Pavers available at building supply stores for approximately $2.) - Small, lightweight building blocks – Each of the two groups should have at least 40 blocks for building. Jenga® blocks or dominoes are two options. - 2 large plastic pitchers of water – enough to cover sand and reach the top of the rock - Matthew 7:24-27 (including the numbered lines) printed onto poster board

ACT IT OUT!

• Divide children into two equal groups, and tell them a storm is coming! Instruct them to build a house that will stand up in a storm—the strongest house possible. • Group One uses 40 Jenga® blocks to build a house on the sand while Group Two uses 40 Jenga blocks to build a house on the paving stone. • At the end of 10 minutes, explain that you are about to pour water onto each house. Ask if they think the houses will stand when the water hits them. Why or why not? • Pour the water. Compare results. (The water will turn the sand into soup, causing the house to fall. A sturdy house on a rock should stand.)

DEVOTIONAL

Read Matthew 7:24-27, using actions from Activity 1. I know a girl who really wants to be on the basketball team. Basketball is almost all she thinks about. She practices 100 shots a day, watches games on TV, and runs 2 miles each morning before school. I know another child who wants to be a famous actor. He takes lessons in singing, acting, and dancing. I also know a child who studies constantly and wants to make straight As.

Is it wrong to want make the basketball team? Is it wrong to want to get a good part in the play? Is it wrong to want to make straight As? (Let children answer.) These are not wrong things! But if we build our whole LIVES on these foundations, and we don’t make the team, get the part, or make the grades, then what? (Allow children to respond.) Jesus wants us to build our lives on the words and lessons he used to teach us about God. We will still have other goals making the team, achieving good grades, or getting a part in a play. (Pick up paving stone, showing children the word JESUS written on the bottom.) But for Christians, THIS is our foundation. This should be what is most important.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus, help us to build our lives on you, and upon the words and lessons you taught. Help us to read our Bibles and learn more about God. Thank you for giving us lessons that help us grow wise and make good decisions. Thank you for being our strong foundation. Amen. 40 |

ACTIVE DEVOTIONALS FOR CHILDREN

DEVOTIONAL/ACTIVITY 3 MATERIALS NEEDED:

- Percussion instruments and sound makers: rainsticks, paint buckets, drums, cymbals, shakers - Creative props to create streams and wind: scarves, ribbons, blue vinyl tablecloths

ACT IT OUT!

• Divide children into 6 pairs or small groups, and assign each group one of the numbered lines from Matthew 7:24-27. • Allow 5 minutes for groups to select props to create a visual or sound effect to illustrate their assigned line.

• Read the Scripture with the sound effects for each line.

• Repeat as needed to practice and perfect!

DEVOTIONAL

What kind of weather report does Jesus give in this Scripture? (Rain, rising streams, wind) Is the wind gentle or very strong? What does it do to the house? I wonder if Jesus is talking about a real storm, or if he’s talking about something else? If the house is our lives, what would the storms be? (Problems) What kind of problems might feel like a storm in our lives? (Write children’s responses on a whiteboard or poster.) The problems we face can feel like storms. Do we sometimes feel scared or worried? In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us, “Do not worry.” We should pray and tell God about what is causing our hearts to worry. We should trust God. We may not always get everything we want, but we can trust God to always give us what we need.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus, Sometimes we have problems in our lives that feel just like a big storm. We might feel worried. Remind us to pray when we are worried. Help us to trust in God. We know you will help us stand strong, even when the rain comes down, the streams rise, and the winds blow and beat against that house! We know we will stay strong, because we have built our foundation on you, on The Rock! Amen.

INDEX OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC RESOURCES:

For Every Season There Is a Song BY DR. FRANCES T. SINCLAIR AND KIRSTEN ELLEFSON FOYLES

Church musicians are accustomed to using various lectionary resources to determine both congregational and choral music to be used in worship throughout the liturgical year. In our own music in worship planning, we found a wealth of resources to assist with the incorporation of more traditional hymns of the faith, and a lack of resources for incorporation of more contemporary songs into worship. In our research, we discovered several topical indices containing older contemporary worship songs and/or short, online lists of current contemporary Christian songs, but no comprehensive resource connecting these contemporary songs to seasons of the church year/liturgical calendar. This is the first in a series of six indices we have created for contemporary worship music, categorized according to the seasons of the liturgical calendar, applicable to most Christian denominations. These song lists are not intended to be comprehensive in each category, as new worship songs are being created every day; we hope this will be a starting point for incorporating these well-written and liturgically sound songs into the life of your church. One common complaint about contemporary Christian music is the lack of connection to Biblical principles and liturgical themes. Special attention was given in

selecting songs consistent with the textual focus of each particular date. There is a substantial volume of excellent contemporary worship music that was not included in these indices because the lyrics contain broad themes that, while valid and useful, do not expound upon the theological tenets of each category. In our article entitled “Bridging the Musical Gap, A Little Child Shall Lead Them” published in the August/September 2014 issue of the Chorister, we offered suggestions to begin incorporating contemporary Christian music into the life of your church through your children’s choir. We have starred the pieces that fit particularly well with children’s voices, and can be used with children alone or in combination with youth or adult choirs. Often the choruses to contemporary songs, rather than the verses, are more suitable for children’s voices in terms of melodic contour and rhythmic complexity, so linking the chorus of several songs together can be an excellent way for children to experience this music. In addition to your favorite hymn indices, we hope this will be a parallel resource for contemporary worship music. This first installment will cover music for World Communion Sunday, All Saints Day, Christ the King Sunday and Reformation Sunday.

USER GUIDE NOTES We evaluated songs based on theological connection to the theme rather than copyright date; therefore, the term “contemporary” in this article refers not only to Christian music made popular by current artists, but also includes hymns, world music and praise songs. Some of the songs contain verses that are not conducive to congregational singing, but the chorus merited inclusion in these indices. Many of these songs are applicable to numerous dates on the liturgical calendar; however, in order to introduce a broad spectrum of songs, we avoided duplication as much as possible.

World Communion Sunday includes songs that address only the topic of unity, rather than Communion, because it is the only Sunday of the liturgical calendar that focuses on this relevant topic; we are all one in the body of Christ. Consistent with the previous note: since we are all one in the body of Christ, we have been intentional about including songs from different cultures and heritages, to include Native and African American songs, songs from the Taizé and Iona communities, and songs of Hispanic and Asian origin.

INDEX OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC RESOURCES: FOR EVERY SEASON THERE IS A SONG

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY (First Sunday in October) The idea for World Communion Sunday began in the Presbyterian Church as a gift to the universal Christian (ecumenical) church.i First celebrated in 1933, at a Presbyterian Church in Pittsburg, PA, World Communion Sunday gained strength and popularity during World War II.ii In a time when the secular world was in chaos, the Christian world celebrated this day as an opportunity to bring Christians of all countries and cultures together. World Communion Sunday is now celebrated by numerous denominations and cultures and serves as a reminder that we are all one in the family of God. The family of God celebrates both our unity in Christ as well as our diversity of cultures, so we have been intentional in including songs with words and/or melodies from other countries. INDEX OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC RESOURCES: FOR EVERY SEASON THERE IS A SONG

REFORMATION SUNDAY (Last Sunday in October) It is believed that Martin Luther tacked his 95 Theses to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517, unintentionally sparking the Protestant Reformation.iii Reformation Sunday is generally a day where we celebrate God’s ongoing reformation of the church and its people. Common themes include: the truth that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works; that each of us deserves to be knowledgeable students and disciples of Christ; and that all people should participate in worship through congregational singing and vernacular reading of scripture and preaching. Some argue that Reformation Sunday should not be celebrated because it is proof of a failure of the church rather than an accomplishment. (based on a quote from Dr. Stanley Hauerwas of Duke Divinity and Law Schools)iv However, the other side of that discussion argues that we celebrate Reformation Sunday “...in the humble confession and joyful conviction that God, with amazing grace, is (still) reforming the church and the world...”,v and according to others, a time when the spirit led the church (reluctantly) into a new reality. ALL SAINTS DAY (November 1st) All Saints Day (also including All Souls Day) celebrates the lives of those who have gone before us. Christians around the world profess a belief in the words from the Apostles’ Creed “...the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.”vii Unlike some of the newer liturgical dates, All Saints Day can be traced back to the early days of the church. Originally, All Saints Day celebrated the lives of martyrs (those who died for the faith), while All Souls Day celebrated the lives all believers and was a day of prayer for those souls in the intermediate state of purgatory.viii In the early centuries, there were numerous feast days to honor individual saints and martyrs. Pope Boniface IV introduced a “catch-all” feast to honor unknown martyrs in 610 AD.ix Pope Gregory III established November 1st as the date to celebrate All Saints Day in the Roman Diocese and Pope Gregory IV declared it a universal church holiday in 835.x However, during the Reformation, the term “saint” was redefined to include all Christian believers, so the distinction between these two dates became unnecessary and All Souls Day was removed from Protestant calendars.xi Today, All Saints Day (recognized the Sunday after Reformation) celebrates the spiritual connection we continue to have with those that have passed on to their life everlasting and reminds us that we remain connected to them in one communion. 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)** (Jonas Myrin & Matt Redman, 2011) Back in His Arms Again (Mark Schultz, 2001) Be Not Afraid** (Robert J. CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY (Last Sunday before Advent) Christ the King Sunday (originally referred to as the Feast of Christ the King) celebrates the reign of Christ as King of Heaven and Earth. This celebration was added to the liturgical calendar by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as a response to rising secularism in Europe and fascist dictators such as Benito Mussolini.xii Pius saw the need for the church community to reaffirm the reign of Christ as King as a step to restore peace and harmony during a turbulent time in world history.xiii The Feast of Christ the King was originally celebrated on the last Sunday of October, but was changed to the Sunday prior to advent during the 1969 calendar reforms.xiv It was decided that the new date was more appropriate as it marked the end of one liturgical journey through the birth and life of Jesus and a prelude to the beginning of another. As advent celebrates the renewal of the calendar, Christ the King Sunday bridges the old and the new and celebrates the never-ending renewal of the Kingdom of God.xv Across the Lands (Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend, 2002) Agnus Dei (Michael W.
