B
ikes are the most common transportation for college students, which makes the campus full of bikes but have not enough spaces for parking. There is always a situation that users cannot reach a vacancy or have to insert their bikes into the interstice between other two bikes toughly, making the parking lot a mess and more difficult to take their bikes out. Moreover, due to the huge amount of bikes, which have almost the same appearances, bikers need to look from the first to the last to get their bike back, and it truly waste a lot of time. In that case we thought of a way for the bikers to memorize where they park much easier, faster, and more efficient. Portfolio │ 11
Portfolio │ 11
•Initial concept From the on-the -spot survey we got four main problems for bike parking:
-not enough space -park informally when cannot get a vacancy -bikes tend to fall easily -many bikers came home late at night
Portfolio │ 12
For what we had found from the survey, we need something that can make the circumstance tidier, and make the bikes easier to be found or memorized. We first came up with this idea as parking posts, each is in a color and are arranged as rainbow-color. When a bike is parked in, the post would be push down so the color part would be lower than the others, which shows it’s already parked. And the differentiating colors can let the owners remember where they parked better.
(1)
(2)
(3)
The very first concept is to differentiate the parked-post from a vacancy by changing the height of the color bar. However we realized that perspective would reduce the impression. And we began to consider whether this mechanism is necessary, and that reminded us at the begining we tend to solve the problem in the most simple way. So we take off the up-and-down part and make a difference by changing the color. When a bike is parked in, the color changed into white. But then we noticed that the colors would be all white when they are all parked, so at last we make the color white when it is a vacancy, and another color when parked. Portfolio │ 13
•Questionnaire survey
In order to prove that our assumption is right, we made a questionnaire on the Internet. The result shows that they are substantially correct. And we are surprised to find that most people feel the parking lots are too dark, which we thought was not so important at first. Portfolio │ 14
Portfolio │ 14
•Sketch
•Simulation Obviously that our design can not be considered as just a product, but the environment around is involved. People think the parking lot is too dark, then we will give them lights. So the lights provides both functions of street light and space memorizing. Initially we decided the colors to be gradual changed, so each post is unique. If a biker parked his bike in the yellow area, he can see it far away and grab his bike easily.
Portfolio │ 15
Portfolio │ 15
•Concept Confirm In order not to let the design become just a lighting-bar, we added someexisted functions in it. And the parking post at last is organized into several parts.
- color changing light: lights for safety and changing colors for memorizing and finding bikes
- auto lock: lock when the bike is parked in - ID card sensor: linked with auto lock, lock or unlock with an ID card
We did the research to get the size of formal bicycles, and make a list to decide the size of our post. Meanwhile, we thought of lots of outlooks for tthe posts. However we at last determine to make it cuboid because the rainbow color is complex enough. It would be too much to give it another bizzare shape. Portfolio │ 16
Portfolio │ 16
•First Model
•Second Model
We made the first to see if the bike can really bike into the post. However we found it useless if we made a model without following all the sizes, so we made the second model which fit what we plan it to be. The height, width, the gate , all the details are made into the second model. However it is made of Styrofoam, so not strong enough to do many tests. Portfolio │ 17
Portfolio │ 17
•The lock In order to simulate how our design works in the exhibition, we need a lock that can connect with the lights. This can be made by the manufacturer, however we could not afford the price. Therefore we made a simple movement ourselves.
The theorem of the movement is about the spinning of a bar with an angle more than 90 degrees. When the wheel pushes half of the bar which is vertical to the wheel, the bar spins and another half block the wheel. Meanwhile the magnet attracts the bar, making the wheel unable to be pulled out easily.
Portfolio │ 18
Portfolio │ 18
•Third Model We finally found that we need a model that is strong enough to do the test, so that we would not fail after the final model comes out. However it could not be too expensive, so we made the last-testing-model with wood.
Luckily it seemed that everything would work perfectly...
Portfolio │ 19
Portfolio │ 19
•Final Model Though we had done many test, the final model still gave us many challenges. It can be seperated into several parts, and the first thing is to make sure our blueprint is all correct. The model this time had to be very accurate.

•Main Steel Structure The main structure is made of steel. We bought the materials and found a factory to weld them. The material is iron, it was not as precise as we wanted but was acceptable.
Portfolio │ 21
Portfolio │ 21
•Color-changing Lights We found one who makes signboards to help us assemble the lights. The tubes are T5 light tubes for they are thiner and can save more energy than the traditional ones. Tough it seems that there are many electric wires exposed, the post is 100% waterproof, which meets our needs that it should be able to resist the rain.
Portfolio │ 22
Portfolio │ 22
•Assemble The Lock and The Switch As mentioned previously, the lock and the switch to change the light colors are all made by ourselves. When the wheel insert and push the wooden part, the lock will spin and touch the switch, sticked by the magnet, and turn off the white light and turn on the colored one. Meanwhile the part which is actually made of a spoon handle will block the wheel making it unable to be pull out.
Portfolio │ 23
Portfolio │ 23
•The Gate The gate is made of 3mm acrylic board, however the most difficult part is how to fix it with iron and can insist the often spinning by inserting of the wheel. We use the AB-glue, which can change to a hard and strong material after it gets dry. The spin-axis is made up with twisting-springs so the gate will close automatically whem the wheel is pulled out.
An impressive thing is when we found the wheel could not be pulled out easily because of the striction between it and the edge of the door, so we had try many solutions. Finally we found that we could solve it by simply rub the edge and make it less sharp, so the wheel can slip through it more smoothly.
Portfolio │ 24
Portfolio │ 24
•Arduino Sensor We use arduino kits to present our ID sensor. After the wheel inserts the gate, the magnet power can be turned on by sensor the ID card, giving a sound”beep” , then the wheel will be blocked. When the bike needs to be pulled out, user has to sensor the same card, otherwise the machine will make loud noise for warning.
#include <RFID.h> #include <SPI.h> RFID rfid(10, 9);
delay(500); analogWrite(3,0); delay(500); } else { //buzzer analogWrite(3,20); delay(500); analogWrite(3,0); delay(500); analogWrite(3,20); delay(500); analogWrite(3,0); delay(500); }
int buzzPin = 3; // Setup variables: int serNum0 = 0; int issetA = 0; void setup() { Serial.begin(9600); SPI.begin(); rfid.init(); }
} }
void loop() { if (rfid.isCard()) { if (rfid.readCardSerial()) { if(issetA == 0){ issetA = 1; serNum0 = rfid.serNum[0]; for(i=0;i<3;i++) analogWrite(3,20); delay(100); analogWrite(3,20); delay(100); analogWrite(3,0); delay(100); }else if (rfid.serNum[0] == serNum0) { //buzzer analogWrite(3,20);
Portfolio │ 25
rfid.halt(); }
Portfolio │ 25
•Wiring Due to the lock and the switch are both made by ourselves, we had to wire ouselves, too. It was not hard, but we still had to be careful to make sure the circuit is correct. The switches separately connect with the white and the red light tube. Ordinarily when the electric power is on, the switch to the white tube is on, and the one to the red is off. As the wheel pushes the lock, the lock spins and touch the switches, making the on and off oppisite, and shows that the post is parked.
Portfolio │ 26
Portfolio │ 26
•Parking testing The biggest thing of all time, this is to see whether the wheel can be put into the space, through the gate, push the lock, touch the switch, and successfully change the light color. And also the pulling out is really important. At this stage we still make some small adjustments, such as angle of the iron structure and the lock, and the space between the two light tubes.
Portfolio │ 27
Portfolio │ 27
•Acrylic Case The case of the post is made of 5mm acrylic board. We made a little mistake here for not giving a space between the case and the iron structure, so it became quite hard to assemble the two parts together. However we still fix it up. Because the two parts almost fit without any gap between, we left out the screws in this final model.

Traditional swabs cases do not care about how poeple take the swabs. The cases are always to full, making swabs hard to be pulled out. And whenever you want to take one, you touched several more around the one. This makes swabs no longer clean and might bring more bacteria to the wound. Therefore I want to design a way that can reduce the chance of polluting swabs that were used yet and bring up a cleaner process during first aids. Portfolio │ 41
Portfolio │ 41
The beginning topic is to design first aid supplies, so I drew many sketches. The sketches are about kit-boxes, stop-bleeding belt, swabs bottles.And at last I choose the swabs bottle to keep on doing...

•Concept The design is to make a cap in rubber with a small hole on it, the hole with short cracks at both side. Ordinary, the hole is not big enough to let a swab-head pass, but when user put pressure to the hole, the cracks would become part of the hole and make it big enough to pass the swabs.

Buttock Cup Portfolio │ 46
Humor has become a trend to design products. Sometimes product with a sense of humor can be even more loved than a beautiful one. A pruduct that can make the buyers smile or even laugh is not easy, and that is what we are trying to do. Portfolio │ 47
Portfolio │ 47
•First Model At the first the main outlook is not about butt but just a cute look with some baby kids elements in it. However, the model did not look good. The sense of humor is not strong enough and the cup has no obviously special part. Therefore I decided to make some changes.
Portfolio │ 48
Portfolio │ 48
•Final Model So the final model is like this. With a round butt, and short, fat arms and legs, just as what a baby has.
Portfolio │ 49
Portfolio │ 49
•Cup Holding This cup is designed to be hold in many ways. User can grab the arms, the body, or hold its cute round butt. The bottom is design to be thick,so it would not hurt your hand when there is hot liquid inside. Also it can be put on the table at any posture.

able game has become a trend in recent years. It is a way to spend free time and is also a good chance to stay with friends and family. Most table games need the players to think a lot, trying to trick their opponents and at the same time figure what is true and what is fake, who is friend and who is not. It is a interesting method to use brain, and it has levels from easy to difficult, rookies to experts, so fits any kind of people.However, a table game is usually not cheap if you want to buy one because of the brand and it truly cost lots of time to create one. Therefore what we were trying to do is to design a cheap but still very interesting table game for all people that love table games. Portfolio │ 55

•Background story To sell a product, we must decide who our main customers will be, and what we finally choose is “college students”. We want our game to arouse the players memories, so it can be more fun when playing, so we choose “high school lives”as our direction, for most college students had been through. The main rules had to be done quickly, and the characters, functions are all in discussion. And we need to think of lots of things that are memories to all high school lives.

We tend to imitate the curves on an INFINITI, and at the same time present an elegant feeling. We choose two materials, pottery and plastic, to put into the design, for pottery has the quality to keep warmth, and also gives a simple of chinese culture, which comes from the same place as penmanship and is one of the spirits of INFINITI. The car cup is used on a car, for people who are probably driving. Therefore we design cup to be used in one hand. The driver can simply open the top with a click, and it will move like a seesaw and the outlet will show up.
