While at PSU‐Behrend, Mashuda helped the Lions to two ECAC South Region Tournament appearances and a 32‐21 overall record. Mashuda spent 2003‐2004 enrolled in graduate school at Slippery Rock University (PA) where he received his MS in Sport Management. He spent one year at Duquesne University (PA) as an intern with the athletic department, assisting with NCAA compliance, to fulfill his graduation requirements. In his first season as head coach of the Hawks Mashuda guided his team to a 19‐10 overall record, a runner‐up NCCAA South Region finish, while also earning a berth to the NCCAA Nationals in Frankfurt, Kentucky. The team also saw two players earn NCCAA All South Region honors and one player earn NCCAA All America honors. In his second season the squad finished 14‐10 overall and saw two players earn NCCAA All South Region Team honors. In his third season the team finished 14‐15 overall and saw two players earn NCCAA All South Region honors and one NCCAA All American. The following season posted a 10‐20 overall record. Forward AJ O'Banion was named the school's 2008 Female Athlete of the Year while also garnering NCCAA All South Region and ALL ICAA honors. Last season, the team improved to 11‐15 overall while winning their last five games including going undefeated in the month of February (4‐0). Last season Mashuda coached Talaya Lynch, who was named the CIAA Rookie of the Year.
MEGHAN AUSTIN Assistant Coach 2ND season
Meghan Austin enters her second season with the women's basketball program. Austin will serve as the assistant women's basketball coach this season while also assisting with Athletic Communications and Operations. As an assistant coach, Austin helped to coach last year's CIAA Rookie of the Year, Talaya Lynch. Austin, a native of Lynchburg, Virginia, comes to Chowan by way of Coker College, where she served as an assistant women's basketball coach for one year. She also was employed with Coker College's Residence Life department. While at Coker Austin oversaw skill development and the weight and conditioning program for the women's basketball program. Austin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a four‐year member of the women's basketball program. She graduated in the Spring of 2008 with degrees in Exercise and Sport Science and Psychology. She also minored in Coaching. Under Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell, Austin was a part of four ACC Conference Titles and made two NCAA Final Four appearances (Boston, Cleveland). "We are excited to have Coach Austin on our staff," stated Patrick Mashuda, Head Women's Basketball Coach. "She brings with her four great years of playing experience at UNC under Coach Hatchell. She expects to win, the
Carolina Way, so to speak. It's an expectation that we hope will rub off on our players this year," concluded Mashuda.

CHOWAN UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PRESEASON PREVIEW 2010‐2011 Head Coach Patrick Mashuda embarks on his 7th season at the helm of the Chowan University women’s basketball program. Mashuda helped to guide Chowan in their first season of CIAA competition a year ago where they finished up in 5th place in the West Division. The Hawks wrapped up the season at 9‐17 overall and 7‐14 in league play. After losing two starters from a year ago, Mashuda and his staff put together a solid recruiting class, highlighted by three successful high school talents. The Hawks return last year’s CIAA Rookie of the Year in Talaya Lynch (Hampton, VA/Hampton HS). Lynch posted 11.2 points an outing a year ago while also grabbing 4.5 boards a game. She had 47 season steals and hit three pointers at a 34% clip to lead the team. Lynch is one of three back court players that return for Chowan this year. Najah Harris (West Orange, NJ/West Orange HS) enters her final playing season for the team. She brings with her three years of experience running Mashuda’s offense as the team’s point guard. Harris put up 9.6 points a game a year ago and dished out 94 season assists. Ransheda Jennings (Suffolk, VA/Kings Fork HS) returns as the team’s leading scorer from a year ago. Jennings scored 14.4 points a game and led the team with 48 steals. She also hit shots from the floor at a 47% clip. Last year’s sixth player of the bench, Brittany Nicholson (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley), returns to add depth to the Hawks roster. She averaged 6.0 points a game and averaged 24 minutes an outing.
Mashuda’s recruiting class will make an immediate impact this year in terms of playing time. Courtney Knight (Sandy Creek, MD/Sherwood HS) will help sure up the Hawks offensive attack. At Sherwood, Knight was named to the Montgomery County (MD) High School All Star team and was the leading scorer and rebounder in that game. Alexia Smith (Traveler’s Rest, SC/Traveler’s Rest HS) averaged 19 points a game in her senior season at Traveler’s Rest High School and in her junior season reached the 1,000 point plateau. Jennifer Hamilton (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg Area High School) was a Franklin County (PA) All‐Star in her senior season and First Team All Conference player for Chambersburg Area High School. Mashuda and the Hawks will have the challenging task of opening the season on November 13th against Mount Olive College at home. Interesting Facts about CU Women’s Basketball • 2009‐10 marked the program’s first‐ever DII league affiliation • 2009‐10 marked the inaugural season for Chowan playing in the CIAA • Patrick Mashuda enters his 7th season at the helm of the program guiding the program through DIII to DII status and into league play for the first time as a DII institution in 2009‐10
