TIM PLACE

HEAD COACH 4th Season (7‐23)

Tim Place enters his 4th season at the helm of the Hawks football program. In his previous three seasons he has led his team to a 7-23 overall record. Place led Chowan to a 3-7 overall record in 2010, which was good for a tie for fourth place in the CIAA North Division. The Hawks finished fourth in the CIAA in 2010 in passing offense, throwing for 195.6 yards per game. Chowan also faired very well in kick returns a year ago, finishing second in the conference in punt return average (14.5 yds.) and fourth in kickoff return average (20.3 yds.).Place has a vast and diverse football coaching background. He served as the head coach at Urbana where he tallied an 11-11 record over 2 seasons from 2006-2007. At Urbana he breathed new life into the program after taking over as interim head coach in the summer of 2006. In a seamless transition, he guided that 2006 team to a 4-1 season start and was ranked as high as 10th in the NAIA national rankings. Along with his six-year stint at Urbana, Place has college level coaching experience at Western Carolina University, Eureka College (IL), and Hartwick College (NY). Place also has high school head coaching experience at Greene Central High School in New York and at Ravenna High School in Ohio. Place graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology. At W & L he was a four-year member of the football team and two-year letter winner. He has a M.S. from SUNY-Albany in Counseling Psychology.

2011 CU Football Season Preview Coming off their best season since their transition to Division II (2006), the Chowan University Hawks will look to continue their rise in the CIAA in 2011. Fourth year head coach Tim Place (at left)returns eight starters on both offense and defense, including All‐CIAA First Team wide receiver Robert Holland (Newport News, VA). That strong core of players, and the continuing change of culture at Chowan, is leading to optimism for the 2011 season. “We have a chance to be successful,” said Place. “We had a great offseason and the kids are buying into what we have to do.” Place led Chowan to a 3‐7 overall record in 2010, which was good for a tie for fourth place in the CIAA North Division. The Hawks finished fourth in the CIAA in 2010 in passing offense, throwing for 195.6 yards per game. Chowan also faired very well in kick returns a year ago, finishing second in the conference in punt return average (14.5 yds.) and fourth in kickoff return average (20.3 yds.). Place and the Hawks are not satisfied, however, with the improvement they have already made. “We want to compete with the upper echelon teams in the CIAA,” he said. “We want to put ourselves in a position to be the first winning team since 1999.” Experience on the offensive side of the ball will be a key factor this season if the Hawks wish to meet their goal. Two seniors and eight juniors are projected to start for Chowan. The lone underclassman position belongs to redshirt freshman quarterback Cameron Stover (Flint, MI), who is projected to start after appearing in three games last season, throwing for 511 yards and three touchdowns. He compiled a passer efficiency rating of 117.10 while averaging a team‐high 170.3 yards passing per contest. The Hawks offense loses wide receiver Eddie Coard, who finished second on the 2010 squad with 594 yards receiving on 44 receptions. Coard also scored two touchdowns and averaged 59.4 yards receiving per game. Chowan returns two stellar receivers, however, to help fill that void. Robert Holland (at left) led the CIAA with 65 receptions a year ago, tallying 804 yards and seven touchdowns. He also scored one rushing touchdown for the Hawks. Holland was named CIAA Player of the Week once last season and was nominated as an HSRN National Player of the Week candidate as well.

Wide receiver Kevin Hodrick (at left) (Carson, CA) returns to action after sitting out the 2010 season. In 2009, Hodrick hauled in 49 receptions for 612 yards and 10 touchdowns. Elliot Smalls (Raleigh, NC) will be looked upon to bolster the Hawks backfield this season. The redshirt sophomore carried the ball 176 times last season, rushing for 646 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught 26 passes for 231 yards and two scores. Juniors Nick Watts (at right) (Church Road, VA) and Charles Wright (Pomfret, MD) will anchor the offense line, which will look to improve from allowing 54 sacks in 2010. “We must reduce sacks and run the ball more productively this season,” said Place. Behind assistant coaches Omar Nesbit and Luther Henderson, the Hawks have greatly improved in the weight room and boast an offensive line with an average weight of 296 pounds. On the defensive side of the ball, the Hawks welcome back a trio of sophomores who will look to improve upon a squad that finished tied for fifth in the CIAA a year ago with 23 sacks. Linebacker Marc McCadden (Rocky Mount, NC) is coming off a stellar freshman campaign in which he led Chowan with 10 tackles for loss, six sacks, and five quarterback hurries. McCadden tallied 38 tackles (23 solo) and forced one fumble last season. An All‐CIAA Rookie Team selection at defensive back, Anthony Hooks (Charlotte, NC) finished tied for third in the CIAA in 2010 with five interceptions. His 39 tackles were fourth on the team, and he broke up three passes and recovered one fumble. Linebacker Jason Ampy (at left) (Sutherland, VA) led the Hawks in tackles last season with 49 (33 solo). Ampy forced two fumbles, recovered one, and recorded five tackles for loss. Physicality will be a focus for the Hawks on defense this season. “We must become a more physical presence,” said Place. “We must create more turnovers and put more pressure on the quarterback.” Chowan forced 26 turnovers in 2010 to go along with their 23 sacks. Unlike their offensive counterparts, the defense of the Hawks will be relatively young in 2011. Three sophomores and two redshirt freshman are projected to start to Brian Matesic’s crew. They will need to replace defensive lineman Brad Cash and defensive back Marcus Johnson, two integral parts of last season’s team. Cash was tied for fifth in the CIAA with six sacks, while Johnson had 35 tackles and two interceptions.
